PRE-ALPHA RELEASE WITH ITALIAN TRANSLATION (experimental)
The preview release that was posted for download is now available with some minor improvements on the project site. This is the location you'll need for ALL future downloads of the program.
http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=221052
- A hex editor is in the works for the data portions that we don't have specific editors for.
- The team is 5 people now and we're all still finding our leg (I think), work still pushes on and hopefully we'll have full support for Hermes soon and move onto the next image type.
###################################################
OPEN SOURCE - DEVELOPERS NEEDED!!
I've decided to open source this project and have created a SourceForge project for it. The SourceForge project url is http://sourceforge.net/projects/visualromstudio. Anyone who's familiar with ROM image formats, HEX editing, C# and Windows Forms. If you're interested in helping with this project please PM me with your SourceForge unix name and a description of what you can contribute.
I've managed to configure PushOK/CVSNT/WinCVS/Putty to work as a SCC plugin to VS2008 and it works very well. It took about an hour to setup, but it makes working on this through the SourceForge CVS MUCH easier. I'll gladly share this info with anyone who needs it especially if you're volunteering for the project

PREVIEW RELEASE
This release should be considered PRE-ALPHA!!!!
This preview release is a read-only release. This release will allow opening of ROM images (nbh files) and will display the contents of them and details of the pieces that I've been able to discern so far.
There is LIMITED save functionality which will allow ONLY the saving of data FROM the ROM image. This release DOES NOT include functionality to add pieces/files back into a NBH file and save it.
I am working diligently on this application and I'm still planning on putting something out this weekend (RL willing) that will at very least allow the swapping and saving of the NB portions and the replacement of the splash images. If I get a fair amount of time in this week on it, I'm really hoping to allow adding of new files to the OS images and saving of the NBH file itself.
I appreciate, as always, any feedback you may have.
Here are the files (.Net 3.5 Framework required - Developed on Vista x64 tested on x86)
Visual ROM Studio (RAR)
Microsoft .Net Framework 3.5
###################################################
Well, this is one of my first ever posts. I’ve been an avid reader of this forum and have benefitted from many people’s hard work on different ROMs and CABs. I’ve been waiting for someone to come out with a visual ROM studio that would allow us non-perl gurus to cook our own special flavors of installable ROMs. I never could find one, so I decided to make one.
The goal here is to create a easy to use GUI allowing a person to open an NBH file and edit anything they like within the “.nb” portions of the file. This IS NOT simply a wrapper around a bunch of perl scripts that extract everything to your hard drive and does managed file browsing.
That being said, the perl scripts originally written by itsme were my base for beginning and he has been gracious enough to assist me in my transition of his perl scripts to an object oriented C# (.Net) desktop application.
Here’s the first milestone for VRS (Visual ROM Studio). It’s now able to open an NBH and list the basic image info as well as build the first level of the tree structure representing the sections of the image. Hopefully in another couple weeks I’ll be able to add additional levels and the splash image preview stuff.
If anyone has any info on reading the formats of the “.cnb/.nb” pieces for the various entries inside the DBH structure; I would welcome any and all insight or guidance that can be provided.
Thanks to itsme and pof...

I think extended ROM, I was playing with that a bit the other day and realized how simlpe that structure is.
I'll keep updating this post as I reach new milestone.
I'm really gratefull that so many more senior members have been so willing to help in this project, thanks again guys!
Wow
This I predict is going to be one of the biggest tools to come out as to date. Will this do do Extended Roms as well, or should Shaps Customizer be used?

Extended ROM will be one of the last things to be done, more than likely. I'm getting the core stuff in for now. My hope is that it will eventually be able to edit all facits of an image.

Looks good, This can change the way we want roms instead of relying on cookers.Extended rom part is usually the easy anyways.Something worth mentioning, Radio editing lol like cid(spl, ipl editing). You made an alpha version yet btw?
Looks awesome, i'll keep checkin in for it. And i'm not sure if anyone can really help me with this, but I need to know all the basics of editing the ROM. Thanks!
This is SUPERB news... Finally someone is willing to make a noobkitchen
I've been looking for something like this for a long long time!!
Thanks for the efforts...
This should be a sticky!!
Thanks

I don't see a reason why it couldn't. My goal is that a final release would have been tested on at least a WM5 and WM6 (Std. & Pro.) for each phone listed on the XDA forum main page.
It's ambitious, I know, and it will take sometime.
BTW: If anyone out there is a C# developer familiar with WinForms and more specifically OO. If you'd like to help I can tear you off a chunk and this can get done even quicker.
Completely new here, and after two afternoons of reading, this is my first ray of hope
I was really disappointed when it got clear to me, that I would rely on other people to get an own customized ROM, with only those apps I need. All existing ROMs here are overloaded with applications I don't, and so is my shipped ROM...
Looking forward to see your app growing,
As I looked out for a smartphone, I always imagined customizing easy like nLite/vLite for XP/Vista, your the first one, giving me that hope back
im eagerly waiting for this release.
pre-congrates and thanx from me.
this is a very good idea, keep up the good work
dear freind
tell me please where can i get it?
with my regards
Whenever you can put something up for us to mess about with (particularly for Typhoon/Tornado), please let us kick the tires.
Wow...Looks promising

Don't know if there's a reg hack, but is this a useful feature?
I could write a program to do it if there's an overwhelming demand.
V
Yes write it, please...
yes Vijay, that would be very much appreciated. Thanks in advance,.
what does the balloon do now?
V
That will be good!
hey vijay,
We are also waiting for your program thru which we can alter the senders mobile number. This software will rock mate.
Eagerly waiting for it..

Ballon has got a static dimension, so if arrived a long sms it cut some characters...
Nishant, you understand that I've never said that I would release this software if I am successful in programming it? I'm not sure that it's useful software for people to have.. But I will try to write it and see if I can do it.
Guys: I can write the balloon to show the text message, but it's going to take a little while to figure out how to do reply and delete etc. The balloon is easy though!
I'm away on holiday next week, so it might not happen until then
V
Ok, thanks in advance... You're the best..
thanx man! u guys are really skillful tech-man! i'm a media student...can't do anything like this...hehhehe!
Guys, I'm not going to have time to finish this off before I go on holiday I suspect: I'm working flat out on something I'll preannounce hopefully tonight - I've never worked on one piece of software for so long
If I can, I will try to knock together a small version that just shows the message text, no reply button etc, for now.
If I can get this before I go away, you can probably wait until next week for a more complete version, no?
The holiday will be a good time to read on some more advanced programming tricks!
efayes: media student makes no difference! If you knew what I did for a day job, man, it's as far from programming as you can get. Unfortunately, I just enjoy programming! And sleeping for 4hours a night

Hi Vijay...I've been meaning to learn how to do programming for pocket pc too. Can you perhaps point me in the right direction as to what tools I'll need and what language to program in and everything else? I'd greatly appreciate any pointers at all. Thanks!
Soupie
soupiejr: I'm on holiiday next week, (unforunately!), so no computer access, but I've been working on my blog between programming (which is very little free time, trust me!)
The blog will be all about my in-experiences in learning to program, hacking the PDA and other thoughts etc.
But for now, searching against my member name and programming.
For the PDA, most would probably recommend programming in .net.
You can choose your language and apply it relatively cross platform.
However, my background is as a hobby VB programmer on the PC. I had to learn to program in a lower level language to do today plugins and things for the PDA.
eg:

}
For this kind of thing, I was recommended by Microsoft that C++ is best for plugins. As such, I picked up a copy of "C++ for Dummies" (!), and "Programming Microsoft Windows CE".
I suggest if you have to learn c++ (which depends on how low level your needs are, because the .net compact framework incurrs an overhead on performance & memory) then learn C++ first, before considering the niceties of the PDA. So Dummies or another good c++ book will set you off in the right direction!
V
PS forgot: if you're learning C++, you can download EVC 4 for free from microsoft. For .net, you can download Visual Studio 2005 Beta 2 from MS. If you've got MSDN access, you can download the release candidate...
vijay...i've visited ur site...
u're simply brilliant man! i'm pretty amazed and impressed by ur "home-made PPC software"....pretty thoughtful...
man, I'm so embarrassed. When I read what Maimach and you other guys are doing with decompiling the rom, my software is like something you find on your shoe
But hopefully some of it is useful from time to time
V
Thanks a lot Vijay! You're the best! I'll go with visual C++ for now. Have been hoping to learn it for a long time now, this'll give me an excuse for it.
Ever heard of Ruby? I wonder if we can use that too...

Don't think I've seen a ruby dev environment for the PPC yet.
I think you're fairly spoilt with choice with .net right now, but I guess Ruby's bound to happen soon enough!

@Shaun33
Great work. I downloaded it, not tested jet, but it will work for sure.
Thank you to fulfill the request!!!!!
wow! great work.
I already have a working cab but i wish this was around when I was trying to first make it - good work - I'm sure a lot of people will really appreciate this! Now if only we can get one to configure and edit dialing plans
First findings...
Hi Shaun33,
Thanks a lot ! It's really a great initiative from you to write (and, mainly, make it available for everybody) such a program ! I have gave it a try, and have notice some small bugs, or better put, behavings not according to what I was expecting. Here are my first findings:
1. Not properly an error. Just an improvement, perhaps: I had already a Voip provision working on my device. So, it would be nice if the application could read the provision file, and bring its contents to the screen, beforehand. So, users could make small corrections only, in case their provisions were not working properly before.
2. This seems to be a bug, though: as I have not seen my provision on the screen, as stated above, I've decided to exit the program without making any changes, for what I have tapped the soft button "Exit", many times, but the application has kept running. I've had to kill its corresponding proccess to stop it.
Hope this post might help improving your your great application further. I'll try to keep you informed.
Thanks again !
Carlos
feature request
nice and useful app. thanks.
adding "dialplan editing" feature would be great.
in fact it would make the app complete.
following post would be helpful in this :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=1224031&postcount=454
Definatly, adding a dialing format editor would rock!
something along the lines of
Code:
+nn (nnnn) nnnnnn
where '+' is the international dialing code (replaced by 00)
'(' and ')' are alphanumerical characters expected
n is any numerical digit
' ' is a whitespace between other values
just to enter a simple string rather than \D{2}-\? etc...etc...
The exit button will be fixed.
How could i miss that .
The Dialplan is going to happen.
Im aiming for something like asterisk
07XXXXXXXX will match 0711111111 - 0799999999
As i said version 1.
reading the settings from the OS is a little harder then coding it... As the API is one way...
still looking
fantastic work, much appreciated
Shaun
Thanks for producing this great timesaver. Even in its V1 form it's already WAY more convenient than having to fiddle with _setup.xml, cabarc, etc.
I look forward to seeing your version that can save and load configurations and dialplans.
Thanks again

fantastic work, much appreciated.
Will test it with Dutty's rom
Shaun33, this simple little program is going to save a lot of people a lot of headaches. May I include this in my WM6BE ROM?

Introducing DONATE, a cool little application that lets you take donations via PayPal directly on device!
Donate is so easy to use and build, there's not a whole lot to say!
Want to see it in action?
Download from here: http://donald.modaco.com/apptodate/donate.cab
TEST OEM package (feedback please!): http://donald.modaco.com/apptodate/donate.oem.zip - remember to add your registry entries, see below!
Customising
Of course, if you are bundling this in your ROM, you want to customise the donate paypal email and the note. Well, you can! Simply create 2 string registry entries...
- HKCU\Software\MoDaCo\Donate\Alias (with your paypal email) and
- HKCU\Software\MoDaCo\Donate\Note (with your donate note)
...and it'll be picked up by the application!
Including in your ROM
To include the application in your ROM, you need to include the following files:
Donate.exe - install to a location of your choice
Programs menu shortcut - of course
donate.xml - this must be installed to \Application Data\AppToDate - see below!
AppToDate
If you are including Donate in your ROM, it is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED that you include AppToDate too (details). Why? Simply because, if the PayPal mobile site changes to break Donate, I will be able to immediately roll out a fixed version via AppToDate that your users will then pick up!
Add to that, AppToDate is damn cool anyway
Hope this app is useful, feedback welcomed and a couple of screenshots are below!
P
PS If you're asking yourself 'Why have I created this?', I just wanted to know if it'd work

Great Tool
Now to add this in! And then roll out the update to my ROM using A2D!
Added a test OEM package, please let me know if it works!
P
I didnt understand the XML in the OEM Package ??
btw i have included a2d and Donaate in my ROM
The XML is to allow Donate to update via AppToDate!
(i.e. the initflashfiles should copy it to \Application Data\AppToDate if it works, and it should appear in the apptodate menu).
Don't forget your registry entries so the app is populated with your donation email!
P
Paul, do your useful apps ever stop coming?
Again wow, im not a cook, but these small things are so useful...
What about rom2date? or is that your next venture?
Rory
ROM updating directly on the device would be just awesome, but it'd require the assistance of someone with more intricate knowledge of the workings of the SPL process to make it happen.
I guess the answer would be something like...
- Download ROM (OK, so it's big, but over WiFi or 3G/HSDPA it's feasible)
- Initiate Soft SPL pseudo bootloader
- Initiate flash via the device itself (emulating a RUU type thing)
- Sit and wait
I think someone like Olipro perhaps would need to share his wisdom as to whether it's possible. Would be awesome tho!
P
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Hermes_SDCardFlashing
This works. Other devices can do this as well I believe.
Hmmm. Assuming you WERE happy to download a 75MB file or whatever on your device, it should be possible then
You could even implement it now by packaging the NBH into a big ass CAB file?
P
Can you create another donation customization ? I can't get a paypal account in Vietnam. I suggest moneybookers.com as we don't need any card for that account
THX
Thanks from the Merlot Comp.Germany
Great app, but i reshacked the exe and replaced the icon with this one, so if you like it you may include it in future release of this software
I definately will include it in my next rom

I've tried to cook into my next rom but can't realy test it (donating to myself) but it conects and it's looking sweet and the paypal icon would also be better I think as people then would not dought what it's for.
and thanks for this app
I'll be cooking this in to my next ROM, although that may be a while coming as I have exams for a few weeks soon
@Gullum: Change the link and donate to me!!!
Nice work, will update to this icon
P
Good job Paul!
If I ever make a ROM I'll include it
Now I had another idea, why not add some functionality...?
I like writing programs and while everything (up to now) is freeware but a donation is appreciated.
I'd like to include your program to do this or a link to it..
The MyApp would fill the following registry entries:
- HKCU\Software\MoDaCo\Donate\<APPNAME>\Alias (with your paypal email) and
- HKCU\Software\MoDaCo\Donate\<APPNAME>\Note (with your donate note)
- HKCU\Software\MoDaCo\Donate\<APPNAME>\Currency (could also be helpfull, or pick the default currency of the device)
- HKCU\Software\MoDaCo\Donate\<APPNAME>\Donated (1 or 0 for yes or no)
Donate would then show a list of installed apps for which the user can donate, similar to ApptoDate
The app writers could have their app check if Donate is installed and if it isn't show a link where it can be downloaded (cab)
What do you think?
I saw a comment about adding other payment options (moneybookers.com) not sure how this works,
but mabe it can be incorperated in the "alias" entry : "paypal:[email protected]" if you decide to go that way.
(if in the above case the paypal is ommited paypal is assumed, just to make sure that the older entries will keep working)
Could work Mr_Gee, will have to check if you can specify a currency in the paypal payment form string... I think it currently picks the default currency for your account?
Moneybookers support etc., only feasible if they have a mobile payment interface?
P

I personally don't care for any other payment option, I only use PayPal, but
I assume there will be people who use other companies.
maybe in one of the next releases
As for the currency if it picks up this information from the paypal account
it seems Ok to me, it was just for the recipient (and sender) so they wouldn't have to calculate the amount that needs to be send..
e.g i'd like 5 euro, but someone in the UK then needs to calculate how much that would be in GBP (I assumed that GBP would be there by default)
anyway looking forward to the new version
To all developers:
I would like to have an application on my ppc that would help me to manage my collection of euro coins.
I am sure that there are a lot of ppc users out there, who collect the several variations of the common currency of more than 300 million Europeans. There used to be a relevant ppc application, which has not been updated for ages. It’s called Euro Coins Pocket Collector and you can find it here:
http://www.albegor.com/ecpcfeatures.htm
If you are interested, please check the following picture that will give you an idea of what I’m talking about. If anyone is interested in developing such an application, I will provide all the necessary pictures and info about all euro coins.

Hi,
This is actually a nice program idea. I would like to develop it
A friend of mine is also a collector and already has some ideas for features.
I would like to start with discussing the features that this app should have.
Intresting idea..
Hi Marc,
I'm glad to hear this. I have a few ideas on how this should work, but I’m willing to hear opinions by others.
First of all, there are two kinds of collectors: “simple” collectors who only seek to find one of each coin, and “advanced” collectors who collect coins minted every year. The second kind of collecting is a very expensive hobby. Therefore, I, along with many of my friends, belong to the first group of collectors. And I want this application for this simple collecting, which will make the application simple as well.
Now, how I’d like it to work:
The pictures show all its functions, more or less.
As you can see in picture 1, I want it to manage several collections, There will also be a few simple options, which I can’t remember right now (I had this idea and created these mockups many months ago).
In pictures 2 and 4, you can see that you can either open a previously created collection, create a new one ore edit it (rename, delete, duplicate).
In pic 3 you can see the 3 ways in which a collection can be opened. You can either choose a certain country to see how many of its coins you have, or you can choose to see all the coins of all the countries together, or you can see only the commemorative 2€ coins.
In pictures 5, 6 and 7 you can see how the coins will appear on screen whenever you select each of the above options.
In picture 8 you can see how you can add a new coin you have found. You can also see info and picture or write any notes for that coin. The point of this is that if you have more than one of that kind of coin, you can exchange with other collectors.
These are the main features I’m looking for. I can’t wait to see your replies.
Marc,
if you have anything else to ask, I'll gladly reply.
I can't wait to begin with this project.

I am waiting for a friend who also collects Euro coins. He wants to give some input too.
In case that your friend is an “advanced” collector, we can add more options to make it suitable for advanced collectors.
Hi all
I am an antique coin collector, do you think this app could also be applied in this case. For instance I don't need countries but civilisation ( Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Islamic and Crusader. And for the 2 first, subdivisions like Greek syrian, Greek judean, Greek egyptian etc.. ) This could save me a lot of trouble managing and showing enlarged pics, instead of handling them directly.
tito12,
I have ideas about such a feature, too. But this depends on the developer from now on. MarcLandis is interested in developing this application; therefore we should wait for a reply from him.
My ideas on this are the following: (If these additional features are implemented, the application should be renamed to “Coin Collector”, not “Euro Coins Collector”)
Allow user to create custom collection, which don’t have to do with euro coins. Thus, the user should give a name and a picture to each coin. The application should directly give the ability to the user to
a) load a collection which is already stored on the device, or
b) take a picture of the coin. The alternative option is to
c) download a custom collection, which I would name “series”, rather than custom collection. An example of this: Let’s say that tito12 has created a “Greek Syrian series” (not collection, just names and pictures of coins, not how many of these he has) for himself. Then he can upload it to the internet (I don’t know if this is easy for Marc) and a user who is interested in the same series, he can download and start creating his own collection.
Marc, we are waiting to hear from you.
Hi Angelo cy
It sounds very exciting, it could be the first app for collectors Thinking about it, it's a kind of inventory with pictures, so there could be already somewhere a base to start with.
Hey Marc, here my 2 cents. We should find a valid source for downloading new coins. So if anyone knows a site or a feed where we can get new coins (complete country series, 2-EUR commemoratives, 10-EUR commemoratives, special coins (e.g. I have a 1/4 EUR coin from france)). Otherwise we need to implement a database where we can fill it.
As well I would like to have a functionality to send a table with the coins I already have / coins I'm still missing via mail, as some friends often bring new coins excited and I have to tell them, that I already have them
Let the games begin.
Hi,
I am going to create some preview screens as I don't like the examples pictures in the first post a lot. I am more thinking of a scrollable list similar to what I use in my Departure application.
I will create the tool to support any kind of coin collections not only Euro as there is not much extra effort to do it.

I found a website yesterday which has pictures of many coins:

I can provide all the necessary pictures and info for all the euro coins (plus the 2 euro commemoratives). And if there is noone else willing, I can provide pics and info for the rest commemoratives (non-2 euros). Everything is in Wikipedia.

Good point. Marc consider this as a "future feature" (wow what a phrase ). The user can directly send the collection through the program, either by email/mms/bluetooth. And think of an "export to excel" feature as well.

I don't like them either. The original mock-ups were much prettier but they were in Greek, so I covered the original texts with those ugly white boxes to put the English texts.
I agree with the scrollable list, therefore at pic 5 we can have a "one line per country list" with its flag next to it. But in pics 6 and 7, a scrolling list wouldn't fit, in my opinion.
Another feature I'd request is the ability to make it easily localized. We can begin with English, and then I can translate it in Greek, you can translate it in German and so on. If it's possible, allow each translation to be added with a simple .txt file, in order to have it in as many languages as possible.
And an option that comes in my mind right now and that some users would find useful, is to sort the countries either alphabetically or chronologically.

Well I didn't mean that we user a scrollable list all the time Some of the views should use "normal" layouts.

My scrollable list control supports alphabetically and manual sorting.
I am currently extracting the UI controls from my Departure project into a separate library so I can reuse it in this project.
Coins collector
Hello,
I am a "simple" euro coins collector and this seems to be a good idea.
For images of the coins (current) may go here
http://www.ecb.int/euro/html/hires.en.html
For €2 commemorative coins see the attach file
About €2 commemorative coins are missing images, i will try to get it
Marc, sorry for being impatient, but are there any screenshots to feed our curiosity?

Hi,
unfortunately I am currently very busy at work and have a sick daughter at home. I am going to have a preview as soon as possible but can't give any estimate.
Don't even think about it my friend. You can work on that whenever you have time.
I wish quick recovery to your daughter and all the best to you and your family.
Marc, any news?

since we aren't working together anymore, you're busy. Something went wrong
Im a researcher at Salford uni, UK using mobile devices to allow the public to carry out noise surveys.
Im hoping to recruit thousands of people to install our app on their j2me mobile or WM PDA, which allows them to record the sound around them and comment on it using some simple scales.
The projects in its pilot at the mo so im trialling the software and methodology with some hard core beta testing.
Im really hoping you guys might be keen to test the WM app out and give me some feedback on how it works and how it could be improved.
Ive attached the cab file and source for your testing pleasure! The code is quite scatty but should be pretty readable.
As a side issue im also looking for some feedback on our project site @ http://www.soundaroundyou.com.
I'm the only one developing the projects different parts so im the worst one to be checking out its accessibility, usability and functionality. Thats why im calling on you guys for your mad development and testing skills.
Any feedback is good feedback for me so be as brutal as you like.
Cheers!
Charlie

NB: Just changed the source and CAB to support (hopefully) all resolutions of devices. All ive done is scaled up all controls in the app depending on the screen size of the target device. There may be some strange side effects of this on device but it seems ok on the emulator...
New site look and feel. Map page also updated with new upload section for online uploads of soundscapes. Check it out... (http://www.soundaroundyou.com)
Sounds really interesting, I´ll give it a try. Please keep the first post up-to-date, maybe add screenshots as well, thanks
---delete, double-post---
any chance to get a vwga version instead of qvgaas it is not useable on my topaz.
Cheers for the interest, im downloading the WM 6.5 toolkit now so I can give it a whirl on that platform.
Ill post up here when ive sorted it.
Cheers, C
Just uploaded new version
In response to MasterOfDesasters ive edited the app so that it scales all of its controls to be usable on a larger screened device.
Its a quick fix really but seems to do the job and makes sure that everything can be navigated and used as you would on it native sized version.
This scaling is not ideal so might throw up some strange effects on control placement, but ive found no issues yet on the emulator.
Thanks again for your interest, C

works so far, but the capture tab is rotated 180 degrees
interesting... but would like some more details. 1) there are two cabs - which should be installed? and 2) where are the sound recordings stored? internal or external?
yep same questions here... i would like to participate on your proyect seems to be nice... but why?
Strange but necessary!

Strange but intentional!
Aha, that is actually intentional. I should probably explain this on the welcome page. I do this so that the devices microphone is placed as far away from any obstructions as possible. I trialled an older version with some school students and I found that they were making recordings with their hands placed over the little mic hole at the base of their mobiles. Because of the high systematic error associated with the unsupervised recordings Ive had to make sure we get as many usable recordings as possible. The app saves the rotational state of the phone when the app starts so that it resets it back to normal when the app is exited though.
Thanks again for your help and I would love it if you could maybe upload some of your recordings to the site using the PC app if you get a chance. Where are you based out of interest?

Hey there, the single cab attachment is the one to install but it should be the same as the one in the source zip anyways.
The sounds are stored on the devices root in a folder named "Sound Around You" There is a settings file and however many wav files for each recording. Each of these recordings has an associated xml text file that contains your subjective responses.
You can locate and upload your recordings using the PC app so they are viewable on the world soundscape map and can then be used in my research.
Thanks for your interest and let me know how it goes for you. Any other thoughts you might have on the PC app or website would also be great as im having a hard time attracting the public to take part and im far too nerd orientated to properly publicise the project!

Aha, thats a question ive been asked before... Is that "why are we doing what we are doing?" or is that "why should you take part and what do you get out of it?"
The projects main plan is to raise public awareness of the sounds around them or their "soundscape". The effect the sonic environment has on it inhabitants is not fully understood and im trying to work out how and why aspects of it affects people in different ways.
By gathering up thousands of soundscape recordings and peoples opinions of them, I can attempt to assess soundscapes in terms of their "Quality". This people based understanding can eventually lead to improved design and planning of future cities and current public spaces in terms of their sound environment.
The data that the public generate will feed directly into my PhD, where I will boil it all down to discover what the determining factors are within a soundscape.
Some more press friendly outcomes may be the opportunity to find out the "best sounding city in the UK or the world" or the loudest or quitest place in the world.
Check out the site @ http://www.soundaroundyou.com and please keep in touch if you want to know anymore.
All the best.
Charlie

Thanks - will give it a go on my HD and see how it goes. Hopefully that'll encourage my workplace to let us all wear headphones during work!

Rebranded the website
Just overhauled the website with new graphics and info. Also added an online upload section so you can get something straight up there using either our mobiles apps or your own recorder.
Let me know what you think of the new look and if it all makes sense.
Cheers!

The Windows mobile version doesn't use the GPS unfortunately as I was having some real issues getting it working universally so I stripped it out. Our Java version for mobiles does though, if your mobile has a built in GPS receiver.
The way that these soundscapes are located without a GPS fix is by the dropping of a marker on a google maps box on the site @ http://www.soundaroundyou.com
But please give it a try and thanks for the interest!
