Does out there exists a Samba(SMB) Server for Pocket PC to share a Folder on the Pocket PC for PCs in the WLAN?
it dont need to be a big SMB-Server. a small Server only to share one Folder would be more than enough.
i read on google that WinCE have something like that with Smbserver.dll

I am also looking for a way to share my Windows Mobile folders on my LAN, so that I can access them from my computers...
Anyone know how to do it? I can't find any setting to share them. Is there a 3rd party software that will allow me to share them?

For sharing over WLAN you should use FTP server.......
Install FTP server software in your pc and FTP client software in PPC.........you can also do visa-versa..............
i already use ftp. But i thought it would be better when not every PC need a FTP-Client to access the shared files.
Sometimes i want to share Files in a Network and it would be easier for most of the people to use the build in - file sharing.

OK. The correct answer is here:
Change HKLM\Comm\SecurityProviders\NTLM\LmCompatibilityLevel to 1 from 3, not to 2 (ref: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa922895.aspx and http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa925018.aspx) as "You can also set the LmCompatibilityLevelServer value to 2 or to 3. Both of these specify that the server will only use NTLM v2. Authentication will fail if the client is not capable of NTLM v2 protocol. For more information, see Authentication Services Registry Settings".
And check to make sure HKLM\Comm\Redir\SmbSignatureMode is set to 0 (not recommended 'cos it may cause problems with windows servers), 1 or 2, but not 3 (ref: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa921092.aspx).
And you can try to set HKLM\Comm\Redir\AllowedAuthMethods to 3 to see if it makes any difference. To me, 2 works fine.
No need to modify samba configurations if you are running a recent version of samba (3.0.28 right now). Anyway, you can always try to add "use spnego = no" (maybe "client use spnego = no" or "spnego = no" as stated and/or quoted in other posts/web pages, I'm not sure of it.) to see if it makes any difference in your situation/samba version.

I have wifi at work so want to be able to access my files that are at home while I am in work like my mp3's. Would they stream ok ?
I think you can stream your mp3s to your wizard if you run slimserver from slimdevices on your home pc and a client on your wizard (though I haven't tried it myself) - take a look at the forums on their website.

Sorry, this is an app which (in effect) enables you to stream (ie play) a music file on your home pc (running slimserver) and listen to it remotely on a client device (e.g. your pda). It doesn't allow you to pick up the music file itself over the internet.

I can access the shares on my home PC over WiFI using Total Commander but I cant seem to play music directly. I have to copy it across first. It gives a funny error message in WMP if I try to stream it. I will post the error message later.

You would need a Static IP address on your Home broadband connection to do this, not many home broadband packages give you a static IP just a dynamic address that changes at whim.
Presuming you have a static IP you could then get yourself a DAMN good firewall and install Microsoft IIS on your PC to make it a webserver, then get yourself a domain name and point it at your PC. (slightly simplified example above there, but I'm sure you get the drift)
There are probably apps around to do this much sipler but you'd need to google for them. pretty sure that there is a specific version of VNC and PC anywhere that will do what you want

Well I could always just take a note of my pc ip address and as my pc is on a lot of the time it can remain the same for some time. Yeah I thought VNC could do something like that but there doesnt seem to be any option for it.
Static IP, pah!
www.dyndns.org (or many others) give your dynamic IP a static DNS name eg yourname.dyndns.org and then all you need to do is:
1) Manually update your IP
OR
2) Configure your router to update you IP (available on some routers)
OR
3) Get some software to update your IP (lots available, use google)
Now your home network has a static name to access it for any purpose - just change the port on the end
I have web on 80, ftp on 21 and a socks proxy all running - just need to forward the ports on the router

I use it and can acces all my photo's, MP3's and even movies that are on my home-pc streaming over internet. It works even with GPRS, but with WIFI it works really great.

Isnt there some way of doing it with resco and your ip address ? maybe opening a really obscure port on the router and firewall ? Not sure how those companies work but im a little concerned about my data going through their servers which I presume it is ?
Would just be so much simpler if there was some way of doing it with resco like I do on my home wifi.
I am trying to access my LAN shares from the Hermes.
My hermes has IP address 192.168.254.9 and my server has 192.168.254.3
So on my Hermes file manager (Total commander) I try to reach
\\192.168.254.3\d$
But it can't reach this.
What do I need to do on Hermes and/or server PC ?
Doesn't seem to work when using Active Sync but needs a WiFi connection.
I set up a VPN connection and whenever I try to access a network share it automatically starts up and I can browse the network. I just use the inbuilt file browser.
Actually it kinda works without the VPN but acts a bit strange... will go down the file structure but not up??
Doesnt work for me using active sync over bluetooth with resco file explorer at all.
Active sync gives you an ip address but if i remember its in the wrong subnet completely.
Using wifi and it works perfectly.

Isn't this a default share windows sets up for its own?
(these default shares are not available for use, I think they are there either for internal use, or to prevent one from sharing the rootfolder)
Could you try sharing a different folder on the PC?
Make a d:\test, and share this folder; there should be a blue hand under the icon of the folder.
It can help to switch off "Simple file sharing" (in Windows Explorer, Tools > Folder Options > View, bottom of the list, uncheck simple file sharing).

it does not matter. I tried both a normal share and hidden shares like d$
Now I captured the traffic between my pocket pc and the server.
if I try to connect by \\192.168.254.3\ my pocket pc tries to resolve name of 192.168.254.3 , but in fact it does not need it.
As it couldn't resolve the name it never tries to connect.

I figured out that the problem occurs because my wifi connection is not connected to "work" but "internet"
if I change it to "work" I can connect to my shares.
But then, what do I lose ?

Don't know - maybe a few apps won't like it. But I've got wifi in internet mode and can still do shares... with a little help from "Pocket Hosts" and "NetUse". Not entirely sure where I got them from... try searching on them ("netuse.cab" on the net use one). Set the name/ip up in pocket hosts and use the name in NetUse. I suspect you could use the name in Resco Explorer or any other app that way.
Maybe I just don't understand the question, I always feel dumb after I speak. I installed An app called "pocket lan" and it just sorted it all out for me. Everything works, it was an older version too.
now there's one strange thing I've encountered...
I can access all the files and folders on my pc via wifi, yet only those that i actually put on sharing. Now when I try to reach the default shares (c$, d$ etc) while logged in as an admin it just doesn't let me to do that ... is there a way to log in as an admin ?
btw I'm using Resco File explorer for that thing - it is quite useful and has never let me down but the admin log in just doesn't work
any ideas ?

well, I installed "pocket hosts" and "netuse"
pocket hosts works (I tested with vxutil)
however, when I try to map a connection in "netuse" , netuse does not work.
it is still trying to connect with ost name and makes nbname query on the lan broadcast address.
my server responds with its other IP.
why does not "pocket hosts" work ?

but this will need internet access which is not always there

It's doable and it has been implemented successfully.
1. create a new pc-to-pc (adhoc) connection on two ppcs with the same name and set both the connctions on the two ppcs to this mode.
2. Set the configurations of the wireless network card. IP: 192.168.0.x, subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Now the two devices can see earch other in all wireless networks. Connect them. What you need next is server programs to provide file sharing/transfering service.
3. Install wmftp on one ppc, and set up account/password/port...
4. Now the second ppc should be able to co share files on the first via ftp service.

1) I have THD and Elfin - both WM devices. My question here is, how can I transfer files ( like Fotos, M$ office Documents, Music etc. ) using WiFi or to be precise WLAN? I do not wish to use Wireless internet to send files....I mean to say, without using any thrid wireless device, how can I enable file sharing between these two devices??
I have checked out Resco file explorer and Total Commander. None of them provide option of FTP over WLAN/WiFi.
2) Similarly, how can I transfer files between my WiFi enabled Laptop and THD/Elfin???
Is there any setting to be changed in existing devices, any 3rd party application?? or is it a call for Developers?

I preffer FTP protocol as there are many clients on Windows/Linux. On my blackstone I use Mocha FTP Server (freeware). Total Commander CE does support FTP (only as a client). Transfer rates are rather slow.

Well yeah, you can browse to a network share with e.g. Total Commander. So it should work once set up properly. Going to try this myself!!
Pardon me if I'm asking for too much.....can we have something like VoIP or to be precise, a radio communicator using such 'WiFi/WLAN between 2 WM devices'? It will be fun to communicate with friends in a 'trucker' style within WiFi range - 10-4 ?

Yes you can....I have installed it on my Blackstone and me Elfin too (after upgrading Elfin to 6.1). And it works.
However, I am still not able to transfer files (using WLAN) between my Elfin and blackstone. Any ideas on that??

I am extreamly happy to say that i have been able to share files from one windows mobile to another windows mobile that too at the speed of up 450kbps.
i had been trying to do this for atleast 2.5 months with no luck(u may check the related topics, nobody had a idea, Even using xda, google, bing, yahoo, altavista found that nobody has done it before...) but yesterday i made it to work the way i wanted to.
All you need to do is create a adhoc connection(e.g P2P) and download FTP server (Yes your mobile will act as a FTP server) and FTP client.
For FTP server download mochasoft and for FTP Client download resco.
**Once you install resco 2008, go to menu-->options-->addins--> then download ftp plugging(and it will make resco to work as a ftp client)
Mobile A
Start--->settings-->connections-->add new ->name it p2p-->select the option "this is a device-to-device connection(adhoc)...once it is done, turn on wifi on Mobile B it will detect this connections, connect to it.....Now two mobiles are connected with each other via wifi(Without router).....Till this point you can find it in google.
Now to share files open mocha soft on Mobile A(It will show that it is "online" with a specific IP address(Note down this ip address), Anonymous login will be on but preferabaly create a user name (File--->settings--> Add[*give it a read/write permission]) and the password.
Then decide for yourself what exactly you wanna share with the other mobile, in this example i am going to share my SD CARD. Go to file -->settings--> other--> and in the "Login Folder:" put in "\\storage card"
Once that's done open up resco ftp on Mobile B. Go to My ftp locations-->New ftp session--Give a name to ftp session (like abcd), In the host type in the ip address address that you noted down earlier--> let the port 21-->Login:ut in the username that you created-->Password: put in the password
and Hey there you go!!!, you will have the Sd Card of Mobile A and you will be working on it as if it is in your own mobile..

On mobile A moccha will notify you that a user has logged on to your server. You can use all FTP commands on mochasoft.
I downloaded the 700Mb movie which was stored in my frnds mobile while we were having beer and it got downloaded at the speed of 450kbps(it started off with 350kbps and was fluctuating from 380 to 450kbps), Just before doing this i tried to copy a 10mb file using bluetooth and resco showed the speed 20kbps........
So next time when you go out to meet your frnds you can transfer all their stuff at the lightning speed via WIFI file sharing......

If i got to settings connetions i can only create a modem or VPN connection..nothing with ad hoc..what am i missing?
If I remember correctly, you set up an adhoc network as if you were to enter a custom network with a hidden ssid. You enable wifi and go to the screen where it shows the available networks. There you can add a new network and tick this is an adhoc connection.
Also, since adhoc connections have no dhcp server, it is best to work with fixed ip addresses.

I have a home server (Windows Home Server) with tons of stuff on it. When I am traveling, I have tried to access and download epub format ebooks, and the browser gives me an error message that the download failed because that file type is not supported by my phone device. (Aldiko didn't help with this)
I have noticed this with other file types also.
Is there a way to download ANY file type from my home sever, even ones "not supported" by the phone? This would be very useful thing to be able to do.

open a port on your router and do port forwarding to ftp port on your server
WAN port like 44444 -> serverip:21
then use a filemanger or FTP client (I use EStrongs file manager, but there are several others) to connect to the external IP of your router at port 44444 (or whatever port you chose above)

I'll have to study up a bit to do something like that. I was hoping there was just some way to allow android to download any file type through the web (http).
The FTP server solution is one way to go. Have you tried a different browser??

I have tried different browsers and apps such as crutch and download buddy. Some of those do let me download the file, but when I try to open the file, it won't. Yet, if I transfer the file by USB or Dropbox, it works fine.
Very frustrating...
Don't know that I want to go through the trouble of setting up an ftp server for something that seems so obvious... can't believe it's not part of the android OS to allow such web based file transfers within the browser???
why not use dropbox? its free, and 2gig will store a lot of epub format ebooks

I use a VPN setup. i think it's the most powerful, albeit a bit tricky to setup. should you need help configuring it dont hesitate to ask. however, whatever your solution, remember a couple of limitations:
- you can access mapped net shares (smb) using almost any file explorer (i use astro), you can copy your files to the sd, but you cannot run remote files. that's because generally no app is able to deal with the smb protocol.
- to circumvent this limitation, you must be root. i don't exactly know the passages but the general method is to create a mount point to your net share (something like \mnt\network1 or whatever), so the system (and most important the apps) will be tricked to think they are dealing with local files. if you are not root, upon reboot the mount point will be forgotten. I read about this somewhere around here.
@ stoney73: I do use Dropbox, but would like to be able to access anything on my server while I am traveling.
@tenorntex: I just ran across that app and will likely give it a try.
@crashDebug: sounds interesting. I would have to do a bit of research and educate myself before I could attempt what you're describing.
