Eee PC connectivity? - Advantage X7500, MDA Ameo General

Hi,
Has anyone bought a "ASUS Eee PC" (http://eeepc.asus.com/uk/index.htm) and tried connecting it to their Athena/Advantage/Ameo? Specifically, I'm wondering whether a standard UK T-Mobile Ameo can be used as a 3G modem for a Eee PC?
You could argue that you don't need a Eee PC if you have a Ameo because the screen is only 2 inches bigger but I'm considering buying one for the convenience of a better keyboard and feature complete browser.
Cheers.

Just install and run wmwifirouter on your Athena, and your pc eee will be able to connect to internet using Athena as the access point.

I have an eeePC!! Not thought of using the Ameo though... I'll try it when i get over my jet lag later!

I used my ameo for data on the EEE for a while , works great under xp , but I never tried it under Xandros , really does seem to cane the battery though
I have since bought a 3UK HSDPA dongle , and not looked back since , I pay £5 per month for 1GB on PAYG -(by sneakily using the handset data add on instead of the £10 Mobile bradband lite ) ...but should that prove insufficient, then there is provision to get 3gb for £15 or 7gb for £25 - works fine on Xandros or windows too
I seem to be getting by on the £5 package though

Ufff 5 pounds a Giga... What a bargain! I'm paying with Movistar here in Spain 30+ euros for 1 Giga or 50+ for 5 Gigas.

I'm looking to get an asus eee and was wondering once i've put xp on it are there any driver issues etc?
Also anyone found a touchscreen that can be fitted to it?

i-mate JASJAR or O2 XDA Exec !!!???

hi , i wanna buy a HTC Universal , so
will i buy O2 XDA Exec SIM unlocked or i-mate JASJAR ????
please help
Really makes no difference as its identical hardware.
The differences are purely cosmetic, however you do have the choice to switch ROMs so, like me at present, you could run an I-Mate ROM on an O2 Exec or vice versa or any other combinations.
Can anyone confirm that loading another Reseller's ROM on a branded device invalidates warranties as I know this has been hinted at before.
Thanks

This is true. A provider will generally only accept a device for repair if it is using one of their supported ROMs, so if you get into problems, you will need to reflash back to a provider supplied ROM
the exec looks good in black.....but the damn problem is in keeping it nice and shining!
The black color attracts a lot of dirt, finger prints & grime! Half the time you'd end up wiping and shining it!
You might be better of with a jasjar ;-)
my 2 cents!

There are people on eBay selling silicone "condoms" for the Exec and they are pretty good. I bought mine and it was delivered in a week or so. The only problem with it is that I need to remove it in order to use my car cradle
Buy the Exec if it is from O2 UK as they have a good warranty scheme (2 years warranty). I have owned both the JJ and Exec and I prefer the screen of the Exec, even though people say they are the same!
basically the exec just looks the coolest. A few friends of mine cancelled blackberry orders when they saw the o2 exec. Also it depends if you want a data tariff with the device or not. If you do, I think o2 has the best data tariff scheme at the moment as:
1. You can buy data only if you don't want voice.
2. Data tariff amounts give the same discount as equivalent cost voice tariffs.
3. Volume of data tariff is good, (+VAT) £14.5 for 35mg, £18 for 75, £25 for 2000 and £45 for 1G.
The best 3g coverage in the UK is, as usual, vodafone .......
thaks for all your relyes , and after reading this i'll buy an O2 Exec
and thanx
Hang On...
I went for the Exec two months ago for all the reasons above (inc the 75Mb data only plan) but you might be better advised to wait a couple of weeks and go for the T Mobile MDA Pro.
There are rumours on Modaco that T Mobile is going to release an unlimited data plan for £7.50 a month!
Apparently T Mobile will unlock the MDA for £15.
xerxes
On a slightly diff note here.. just wanted to tell u guys.. here in India AIRTEL offers an unlimited data plan for Rs.200/month only which is approx US$4.55/month only. with EDGE speeds
YIPPIE !!!

GPRS/Edge expresscard

Ok, a little off topic but I thought I'd ping the collective to see if anyone had seen one of these.
I travel a lot and had been using an old Sierra Aircard 750 with my thinkpad. I never had much luck using the MDA as a modem and it was easy enough to pull the SIM card out (tmobile) and stick it in the 750. I needed to do this because we use lotus notes and the web site where we can access it is a java app which runs only intermittently on the MDA.
I was recently upgrade to a dell xps which has the newer expresscard slot so my old 750 won't work. I've been looking all over for a GPRS/Edge expresscard modem and cant find one, it looks like Novatel is going to release one towards the end of the year but I could use it now.
Any ideas?
My advice is to get the MDA working as a modem. Why spend money on a new solution when the MDA could work just as well?
I guess if the job is paying the bill, then it's a different story.

XDA mini S or Vario (o2 or t-mobile)

Hi
I've just ordered the XDA mini S on a contract from o2.
The contract is called online 100. I get 100 mins and 500 texts for £25. I've opted for the £5 a month option of an extra 4mb data.
I've just noticed that tmobile do a similar contract on the Vario. They give 150 mins a month and 600 texts for £25. But for an extra £7.50 you get their web 'n' walk plan which is unlimited data access.
I have had an XDA II for the last 3 years and loved it. Unfortunately it broke recently and I automatically looked at another XDA but I'm now wondering if I should go for the VARIO.
The main selling point being unlimited data access... that has got to be a huge bonus.. rather than £5 for 4mb from o2 then £1-£2/mb after that.
MY QUESTION IS.... What is the difference between the XDA mini S and the Vario and is there a good reason to stick with o2 and the XDA mini rather than going with tmobile and the Vario??
One last question is the VARIO II the same size as the original VARIO?
Any advice much appreciated.
Thanks
Nic Teeman
I think at that price diferential the only question is one of stupidity - 2GB per month for £7,50 vs 4MB per month for £5, having been a loyal O2 customer for ten years I am leaving, unless they wake up and offer a decent package - I would put up with 250MB per month (it would suffice) but not at their stupid prices, if looking at switching take a look at the vario-III, some people are reporting this device when switching networks for £60 - well worth investigation - Mike

Nic, There are no hardware differences between the two phones. The only difference you will see is the ROM loaded on the phone and the aditional software that each vendor include in that ROM.
Go for the cheapest plan that fits your needs.

Imate Jasjar for sale

PLEASE NOTE I AM ALSO THROWING IN MY 4GIG SD CARD THAT I BOUGHT FOR THIS PHONE
This is by far one of the best phones I have owned, I have had it for approx a year and a half and always treated it as if it was one of my kids !!
It does have a few scratched and one or two cracks on the casing but nothing major at all.
This phone works fantastically, BUT WILL NOT WORK ON A PAY AS YOU GO SIM
It will only work on a PAY MONTHLY CHIP.
It has everything on it including : office, email, skype, WiFi, internet explorer.
This is the ultimate work tool.
Ask me any question and hopefully I can answer it.
Thanks

£250 or a sensible cash offer

Sorry, but I bought my (third *) one on eBay, 3 months old, perfect condition, for £180 including a ton of accessories. They are easy to unlock... software available on buzzdev.... I am using an Orange SPV M5000 on a Vodafone Netherlands PAYG SIM, the other a JasJar on a Virgin UK PAYG SIM, sometimes put my Vodafone contract SIM into either one and it works fine... looks a tad overpriced if you want a quick sale...
(* I have had one stolen, I have two others as I simply need backup while working abroad).
OK
Ok no probs but that is why it says :
£250 or a sensible cash offer
Thanks
