I have a new (four days old) Cingular 8125, and it got a bit antsy on me today.
After working flawlessly for three days, I was installing some applications on a new 1 GB mini SD card, soft resetting after each installation, when it returned after a soft reset and suddenly had no phone network. No "E" indicator, and an exclamation point next to the signal strength indicator. Uh-oh, thought I, before I broke down and cried! OK - not really, but I definitely wasn't happy about this!
When I checked the network settings, it said No Network under the GPRS setting. I called Cingular, spoke with a data rep, and performed a hard reset. (Had to use the "Clear Storage" app - holding the keys and soft reset wouldn't work). As soon as it returned from the hard reset, the Cingular software the rep had pushed out to me installed and phone service was restored. Which is a good thing!
But now I can no longer sync the device via Activesync 4.1. Nor can I install any applications; when I try, I get a dialog saying that the installation was unsuccessful. Windows installer or CAB installation, makes no difference. I can't successfully install anything on the device. I had scrubbed the mini SD card, except for a few folders filled with icons for use mostly in Pocket Informant and PocketBreeze. I figured that it couldn't hurt to leave them there. I also can no longer delete files or folders from the device. It's similar to not having Administrator rights on a Windows XP machine. As if everything is read-only, but I cannot change it.
I copied Smartkey over to the mini SD card via Explorer in Activesync, but whenever I reset the device I get a dialog saying that Smartkey cannot run, unknown developer, etc. I can't close the dialog right away, but it does disappear after about 30 seconds. If I open File Explorer and tap on the smartkey.exe file it does start and work normally - until the next time I soft reset.
Activesync will connect with the device but will not sync. Throws the attached error message. So I can explore the device but not sync. I tried deleting the partnership, performing a "repair installation" of AS 4.1 - no change.
As for the applications I had installed prior to all of this, they all seem to be benign - with two possible exceptions.
In Main Memory:
Pocket Informant
PocketBreeze
ContactBreeze
iLauncher
On the mini SD:
Resco File Explorer 2005
PDAMill's Gamebox Solitaire, Gems, and Classic
Dinarsoft's HandySwitcher and HandyMenu
Phatnotes 4.7
ListPro 4
Tweaks2k2
Resco Sudoku
Resco Keyboard Pro
All versions that claim to support WM5. All applications seemed to be working fine, with the exception of Resco Sudoku and Resco Keyboard Pro. The only change I had made with Tweaks2k2 was showing the time and date in the taskbar. Resco Sudoku locked the device up, with just a black background and 13 large colored orbs on the screen. I uninstalled it immediately. Resco Keyboard kept giving error messages when I tried to select it as the SIP. I had just uninstalled Resco Keyboard and performed a soft reset when it returned from that reset it had no phone network. Note that all of these applications had been working fine up until this point in time, except Resco Sudoku and the Resco Keyboard Pro. Hmm... Needless to say, I suspect that the Resco apps have a problem with WM5. But I owuld think that a hard reset should have cleared up anything those apps had done. Maybe not, though.
Anyway, that's when I called Cingular. Does anyone have any idea at all as to what could be causing all of this? Or better yet, what could fix this? Please!!
I'm very familiar and comfortable in WM2003/SE, but I'm completely new to WM5, so I'm not even sure where to look for troubleshooting.
Thanks in advance for any advice!
EDIT: Really sorry the thumbnail is so small - I didn't think that it would be, Click on it to read it. Thanks again.
EDIT: Error should read: 0x8000ffff Sorry about that.
I think the fact that you cannot delete files/folders on the device is key. If you cannot modify folders, then the installer can't either, so software installations will fail. Does this also apply to files and folders on your card? I'm guessing that it does not, and that your supposition (key folders and perhaps registry keys are RO now) is correct. Unfortunately, you can't modify folder permissions using activesync explorer and you can't install an application that can either. Catch-22.
Have you tried a hard reset subsequent to your discussion with the Cingular rep? Perhaps this will re-create an installation with the standard settings.

No, I haven't hard reset again yet - I wanted to wait and see what responses I get.
I did, however, find one of the Activesync logs though, and all sync attempts since the last one that worked have the following two error messages:
"TraceToFile -> ERROR in CChangeTracker::GetMaxCounterInProfileCleanupTable : hr = 0x800ffff - ctapi.cpp(3695)
TraceTraceToFile -> ERROR in CRAPIDevicePrivate:HandlePackets : hr 0x800ffff - RAPIDevicPriv.cpp(443)
And then some whcih are very similar, but with the numbers in parenthesis changing.
Look familiar to anyone?
Thanks.
OK, I just found a Microsoft KB article (Q243349) that seems to indicate that an 0x08000ffff error is Microsoft SQL Database-related.
??? Baffling.
Actually I do have an MSSQL Server on my PC - one of the programs that I run installed it and requires it. Maybe if I disable it?
EDIT: Error should read: 0x8000ffff Sorry about that.
I just noticed that wherever the errors start throughout the log, the only two applications mentioned - other than Activesync, of course - are Resco Explorer and Ilium's eWallet, which is really odd. I never installed eWallt on this device, though it has been giving me fits on my AximX50v ever since they introduced SyncPro about a year or so ago.
My 8125 is up and running again.
I performed a hard reset and this time I downloaded and installed AS 4.1 on my notebook and tried synching with that. My notebook does not have an SQL server installed, and it's a "virgin" AS install - neither Resco Explorer 2005 nor eWallet Pro has ever been installed on that PC.
I can't say for sure, and I'm still investigating, but I believe, based on the Microsoft KB article that I referenced above, that the SQL server on my desktop PC, and possibly eWallet Pro and/or Resco Explorer 2005, is the cause of my recent grief.
The MSKB article specifically targets the SQL database - same version as mine - as a known cause along with certain databases, and since both eWallet and Resco Explorer 2005 are mentioned throughtout the WCESComm.log, always in the first four or five lines of the error messages contained in the log, I suspect that eWallet's DB may have somehow triggered the mayhem, as their SyncPro has caused endless losses of my eWallet data since Ilium introduced it. It's possible that Resco Explorer 2005 just happened to be the application I had just installed before the device went belly up for a bit there. Actually, Resco Keyboard Pro was installed right after that, but since RE 2005 is mentioned in every error log item, and since Resco has a special page on their site mentioning how "...an issue with the way that Windows Mobile 5 handles installing software that may result in a failed installations...". I've written Juro about the issue, to give him a heads up just in case.
So all is well for now. Hopefully I will be able to continue synching my other PPCs (five), all with WM2003/SE, on the desktop, as the SQL thing is only supposed to affect the WM5 OS.
If anyone else runs into a similar situation, please send me a PM or post here. I'd be glad to share whatever I discover on this, and I would also be interested in seeing how other devices were affected, common issues, etc.
Hi all,
I have a slight problem, nothing big to be a big drag, but something that keeps bothering me.
I loaded WisBar Advance 2 and also SPB weather (amongst other programs), these just happened to be two programs I was disappointed with and wanted to remove it so it didn't take up unnecessary memory, but when I tried to remove it through "add/remove programs" it prompted saying that they were not completely removed. It still shows the folders for these two programs under "Programs," but they no longer work but its still there.
Is there anyway to completely remove them from my MDAs memory?
(btw, all other programs I've removed were removed completely, except for these two)
thanx
Explore your device with your computer and remove the files manually.
I've already done that, I've already gone through the phone via mobile device under my computer and have removed everything that seems to be associated with these programs but have had no luck on removing the folders from under programs.
thanx
you have to navigate to Windows > Start Menu > Programs to remove those items, its a bit confusing, youd think it refers to the start menu but it doesnt.
Cheers,
I have had this problem for a few days, even posted a topic to no avail,
Thanks very much

Hi,
When I tried to remove one of my programs, using remove programs, there is always this ERROR: (the name of the software) was not completely removed. Do you want to remove it from the list of installed programs? Then after I choose yes, the program is still exist.
Can anyone please explain to me what happen with my pocket pc, and how can I remove the software compeltely?
Is it related to pocket mechanic that I am using, because I usually always delete the registry?

Same error here always.. would love a good answer...
Also have the same problem on and off. A hard reset took care of it...
I have the same problem. I know the Universal and the Blueangel are two very different devices but even so it is the same error message. I have hard reset it 3 times and it still has the problem.
is this a WM5 flaw? :?
Maybe.
What I do to make sure I totally uninstall everything is install the same application back in. The Universal will then show a window stating that you are installing a program already installed and that it will be removed first before proceeding with the installation. After the automatic uninstall, I just opt to cancel the install process and the original application is now uninstalled completely.
Another suggestion, the latest version of Pocket Mechanic has a new feature to handle all uninstall options in the Universal. I have to say, I have not tried it yet.

Lots of people have had this (Including me)
The solution is to make sure the app isnt starting when rebooting i.e uncheck any today plugins, make sure the app isnt being started by the windows\startup\ location. Check the application to make sure there are no options set to automatically start i.e for pocket mechanic check that no auto cleaning etc options are checked - and then after all that soft reset your device. Then try to uninstall - should work.
There is something resident in the program memory causing the program not to be uninstalled - you need to find it and stop it from restarting prior to soft resetting your device.
Hope this helps.
Matt
Yes that's the solution I think. for this I use SPB Pocket Plus "safe mode" option if some program wants to be uninstalled.
I boot the machine "safe" and uninstall everything I want
Everyone,
This is one of my first posts. I have been reading the threads on this and cannot make heads or tails of what's going on. I have a Shift for eval purposes and after playing around with it, I think it's a pretty amazing device. HTC has crippled the phone capability in the US versions because they haven't certified it for voice use with the FCC yet. If we can access "file explorer" and some of the other features of WM6, I think a lot can be done to modify it or even to use it for voice. Has anybody made any headway as far as a new ROM that enables all of this functionality?
No
nobody has yet developed the crack. The reason is because nobody has the machine yet. Can u comment a bit about the battery life. Is it very disappointing?
well, now that several people actually have the device in-hand, could somebody please confirm that the ability to expose full WM6 exists as described by Pawel062:

hmm dont really understand the last part about snapvue. the snapvue for athena is snapvue from shift with a small mod to re enable the softkeys and start menu. it will work on shift and also re enable the soft keys and start menu making the shift's wm6 "Full" again

So Any luck running/installing any other programs on SnapVue?
greetz,
Pfeffa-rah
what about athena projects rom? that rom is actually from shift right?
snapvue is actually a today plugin pretty much. it hides the soft keys and start menu of the original wm6. then from the plugin u have access to messaging, settings, and other basic stuff.
this is ment so u use vista but with only 2hrs max battery on vista many people would like to use the less power hungry wm6. i am working with paul from modaco.com on re enabling the full wm6 by putting a modded dll that will unhide the start menu. after that ull be able to get into file explorer and get a reg editor to re enable the soft keys.
heres the challlenge:
--no usb port like regular htc phones to sync the shift and get the dll on their. only usb host
--no bluetooth in snapvue/wm6 side
--no wifi in snapvue/wm6 side
--no ir in wm6 side
--vista device central doesnt see the wm6 side
--cant save files from email to windows folder
and i cant remember now the other blockades. i will continue working on it though.
Seems like that there is some kind of file transfer, it uses it when you install a certificate in shift control center, but how to crack it open or replicate the process for other files, and then execute the file on snapvue site ....
Think its time for a "taskforce thred" where all info is posted so everyone can work on it.
Sounds a lot more difficult then I first imagined....
(No BT??? OMG! had no idea!)
Sounds like I have to be a bit more patient...
This doesnot sound like it´s gonna be solved in a couple of days....
It´s great that you´re workin on it guys!
greetz,
Pfeffa-rah
thanks Pawel062, I appreciate your efforts in trying to find a way to get this to work!
Just saw if you edit a contact and then try to attach a picture, you can browse the WM6 folders.
Unfortunately you can only see the pictures, because it's using the picture manager from HTC..
Silly thought: The miniUSB connector on the dongle formally is only meant to provide additional power to devices that otherwise would not be detected (External Harddrives etc). Would it be a silly thought to assume that the same miniUSB port could somehow allow us to access the SnapVue part? The miniUSB port is located at the back next to the cable leading back to the Shift.
I hadn't even noticed that.
I just plugged mine in for the first time, the only drivers Vista installs are for a Generic USB Hub and a USB to Ethernet Adaptor. There doesn't seem to be anything else hidden in there.
If anyone needs anything tested on a shift dont hesitate to ask. Full WM6 functionality would be greatly appreciated and would turn snapview from a gimick into a usefull tool.
OK so thanks to Michael who commented on Browsing using Contacts and Pictures, I managed to gain access to the Windows Mobile File Explorer and other software on the device.
First step is to create a new email.
From the menu Insert - Picture.
Using the browse capability go to the Windows folder
Locate Start Menu and press Ctrl C
Browse to Settings
Press Ctrl V
Go to Snapvue homescreen and goto Settings
Start Menu will be visible and you can then access File Explorer etc.
Hope this helps....
Excellent. I have sent myself the executable of PHM.lu's regedit, saved it into my documents, and am now able to access and edit the registry!

Great! Any possibilty to enable blocked things like office or is it not installed?
Also in my limited investigations, I have managed to almost access Windows Vista from the Windows Mobile side.
Using Resco's Explorer with its Network Access functionality, I performed the following.
Under Windows Vista, run the ShagCtrl application.
Install a Certificate, this can be any file you like.
You will see the progress bar appear and drop up and down. If you listen you will hear the sound of a new device being added.
Do NOT click OK when prompted as this will remove the device.
If you load up Device manager, you will see an "NDIS shared Internet connection" (or something similar) appear under network connections.
If you open CMD and run an IPConfig, you will see that this connection has an IP Address of 192.168.160.102 and a gateway and DHCP server of 192.168.160.1.
From the Windows Mobile side, load Resco Explorer and goto Menu - File - Network - Map Drive
In the dialog that appears, you should see Computers near Me (or similar) and under here should be your Vista machine.
If you share a drive, or select the Vista computer and put \c$ on the end, it should try to connect.
This is as far as it gets me so far. Was a late one, but I couldnt get it to actually connect.
So close yet so far.
In Addition, if you try to run a cab file it will error. This is because HTC have remove the Open command file association for Cab files.
Using your favourite WM registry editor goto HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Cabfile\Shell\Open\command\.
Under Default type
wceload.exe "%1" /nodelete
cab files will now install correctly.
Hope this helps...
Hi,
I ama anew user of Shift. I am did not understand clearly what did you mean about full WM6 or 6.1. Knows somebody how can we have a full WM6 on it? Pls help me I really need a full WM6 system also.
Thx.
Ok, so I've accessed the Start menu using Vs1979s instructions, and I've found that Windows Live messenger is on the device and works ok. I'd like to try and install Opera, but I need a registry editor that isn't a CAB file in order to add back in the registry key to support CAB files - can someone point me in the direction of one?
Thanks,
Dave

How did you load Resco Explorer on Snapvue?
Recently, I uninstalled the trial version of CE Star 2.8R3.
However, once the CE Star has uninstalled & re-booted, I lost a number of important programs! Key programs like Contacts, Calendar no longer run!
I can see them in my soft buttons, Start Menu.
I can see the files in /Windows under File Explorer.
Clicking them has NO EFFECT!
Running Black Satin Normal!
Anybody have any suggestions?

My only guess here is that the program has changed the file associations in the registry for contacts, calendar etc. Theoretically you could edit the registry back to the correct associations, but that could take a considerable effort in tracking down all the keys and amending them.
A hard reset would work but of course will cause you other problems unless you have a full backup done before the installation of CE Star.
Just a thought, but perhaps CE Star website might have some guidance??
Mike
Have you tried to Sync it on your PC, or recover it. Maybe next time you can use PIM Backup, for backing up and restoring your files, etc.

I should have been clearer.
I meant that I click on the contact.exe file in /Windows/ under FileExplorer & it does nothing! Clicking on other exe runs them!
This is really WEIRD!
I understand the part about the association but why would it work for some exe & not others?
In the end, I needed access to my Contacts & Calendar so I hard reset, restore to mid-Feb & then re-sync...
But that means that I have CE Star installed again & I am now reluctant to un-install it though I am not using it...
