gprs and edge - software or hardware? - Networking

hi folks, not certain if this should be in networking or development, (so have posted in both)
my question is simple and could do with some advice. is the edge/gprs frequency on the radio a software or hardware setting?
my htc panda does just about everything i need but according to my network (o2 uk) the phone is gprs only. my understanding is that edge runs on the same freqency so i wanted to see if i could change the device to run on edge
is this possible?
any help/advice would be appreciated
cheers
Chris

Its hardware: Look at the phones manual to see if you have it, if you do, you can recieve it where ever theres signal. If you dont, get a TyTN II!

even if you have edge, you probably wont browse on it in the uk. Networks claim thy have edge, but i dont know anyone on ay network [this is personally] who has connected to edge ever. So, dont fret, if you have edge, and arent connecting to it, theres not much you can do.
And dont get a tytn ii, theyre riddled with problems [as its forum shows]
Rory

I regularly use EDGE both on O2 and Orange in the Uk! Also havent had any problems with the TyTN II's functionality!
Each to their own I suppose!

cheers folks,
basically i am on o2 and stuck on gprs. i love my panda and can bypas most of the speed issues using opera mini (and wifi at home)
was just hoping is all

Does the XDA2 work on the Orange (UK) network?

Guys - I'm trying to get hold of an XDA2 and put it on the Orange network in the UK. The main reason for this is that you can have 2 numbers connecting to the same phone on the orange network (a.k.a. business and personal). But I also like the idea of HSCSD - i.e. 28.8K data speed - faster than any of the others.
If anyone has done this and has any comments they would like to share that I will be a happy man.
regards,
i may be way off here but i dont see what the problem should be
a gsm phone should work with any gsm operator
i bougth my xda unlocked and without a phone company licence
i put in my sim and typed in the pin
i put in the grps settings myself
and it were all set
so as far as i see any unlocked xda should work
Hi,
I'm currently using an unlocked MDA2 on orange. No problems so far, phone works, gprs works. You mention HSCSD. This is not possible with the MDA2 - it is GPRS only. Or are you talking of carrying two devices, one for GPRS and one for HSCSD ? ;-)
Cheers,
Oliver
(Oliver - ) if you are using it GPRS with Orange then you would no doubt be able to have the 2 number service they offer.
As for HSCSD, this is a faster version of GPRS - see http://support.fujitsu-siemens.de/KnowHow/GB/Grundlagen/Funknetz/GPRS/GPRS-im_Vergleich.htm
The important figure is the realistic data rate in practical usage, and HSCSD appears to be 2-3 times faster. This means your bill will go up 2-3 times faster. But that's not the point is it?
Anyways, cheers d.

XDA2i and "3"

Hi,
Can anyone comment on the XDA family of handests and compatability with the "3" network? Im considering a 2i, especially with the support thats obvious from this forum.
All help appreciated.
To my knowledge, 2i's are not 3G compatible and I'm unfamiliar with whether you can use a non-3G phone on the 3 network.
I don't know if you can have a sim card that's on 3 but not 3G enabled...even if you can then I'd probably wait until the Universal (XDA Exec) comes out in a "few" months time as that definitely IS 3G enabled.
Cheers
Ant
ok, great. thanks, thought it might be 3G related, but not a mobiel technology techie.
The HTC Universal will be launched (in theory) in August, and this is a 3g PocketPC device running Windows Mobile 2005.
I know it will be launched by O2, Orange, T-Mobile, and Vodafone (as soon as Qtek release it under their brand) but I am unsure about "3" themselves. Probably not as they don't allow open internet access yet, so all you would be able to view is their own content, which would be kinda crappy on such a powerful device.
To be honest you are better off getting O2 to pricematch to 3 - that's what I did.
The 3 network is terrible when O2 are busy - it piggybacks O2 so if there is a lot of traffic 3 get the lower priority.
ALSO, all your internet capabilities and things that make the XDAIIs great will be wasted on 3 as they do not allow actual internet access - despite what they may say.

Triband or quadband? 802.11b or 802.11b/g?

Firstly, I would like to say that my mobile provider is T-mobile (The Netherlands). I have the T-mobile MDA Vario.
I have discovered 2 previous threads concerning contradictions in the hardware of the Wizard/Qtek 9100/MDA Vario.
I know that the original manufactor is HTC Innovation (Taiwan). (Under my battery its labeled as the "WIZA200").
The Qtek site for Europe says it supports quadband, 802.11b/g & EDGE.
http://www.qtek.nu/europe/products/9100/specifications.aspx
However, the Dutch T-mobile site says it supports triband, 802.11b & only support for GPRS.
Triband: GSM 900/1800/1900
WLAN High speed data (802.11b up to 11Mbps)

Now I am assuming that the Qtek 9100 & MDA Vario devices are hardware wise exactly similar (Seems expensive for HTC to produce slightly different Wizards.). Therefore I came to the conclusion that the it must be locked down through software.
Has anyone been able to unlock some of these features? (E.g. triband -> quadband)
I tested to see if 802.11g would function on my MDA Vario (Through Linksys router working in G-mode only). It didn't work. So I am assuming there are no mistakes on these websites. Also it would be in T-mobiles intrest to lock down these features as the MDA Pro has them, but is a lot more expensive.
If anyone could shed some light on this problem, it would be intresting.

Thank you, didn't know there was a new version out. I saw something about version 1.0, but some people were having problems with this, so thought it wasn't a working fix. Quick question regarding the WLAN G 2.0 patch, does it still also allow to be connected to 802.11b only networks?
Anybody still now anything regarding about going from triband to quadband?
Thanks in advance.

NEW O2 EXEC-WHAT WOULD U DO?

hi all,
i have just bought a new O2 Exec.. I was wondering what software/tweaks you guys recommend.
Regards,
frz
i also just have my dopod 900, similar to o2 exec and i still dont know what to install. I saw something about AKU2 or AKU3 on the forum but dont know where to download, can someone please advice/help us as my device was sometimes cannot received data signal while connecting to internet.
I just download TCPMP player to the device and it was a great staff to play with and I will not use the WMP for movie/tv.
Guys, I've just bought myself a new suit.
Would you like to come over and try it on for me?
Come on - a little work on your side will be necessary, and searching is the best way to show that you've tried.
Have a read through this thread for guidelines on using the board:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=4534
And then have a look here for a starter:

AKU stuff - get started slowly before you start modifying the OS too much, as a lot of the stuff on the board can make your system unstable if used incorrectly. Configure your basics, get yourself some good backup software, and then check out the wiki and the ftp.
Most of the newer roms will have some AKU support already in, I think.

Thanks a lot bro Vijay555. Will try to surf now and get more info.

Danlee....
Just out of curiosity....how much is internet connectivity in M'sia?
I'm planning on coming home during the CNY and would like to use the service if it's not too expensive.
Would you mind posting the cost of the internet connection and who the provider is?
Will it be available prepaid?
Thanks.
Fellow M'sian in US.
To vijay555,
Thanks a lot but i cant do downdoading now cause i am on GPRS connection now. But i will visit your site when i got back home.
To Moden man,
The cost for GPRS connection will be 1 cent for 1kb. You can only use 3G in KL area. You can access by using DiGi, Celcom and Maxis as your service provider.

htc tytn with t-mobile rom

I am a t-mobile customer with an unlocked htc tytn. I wanted to know what woudl happen if I loaded my phone up with the t-mobile mda rom form the t-mobile site. If anyone knows please let me know. I have been trying to get the edge feature to work and im in a edge area but I still do not get the signal. Is there some sort of settings that I need in order to get edge to work. Thanks for the help
There is no t-mob rom upgrade available for HTC Hermes yet, probably the rom you are refering to is for another device. T-mob branded Hermes is called "MDA Vario II".
And yes, you need your operator settings for the data connection to work.
t-mobile settings
I am having problems with the tytn. I have a htc branded tytn and I am with t-mobile. I have all of my settings right. The internet works the mms works but the damn edge does not. What am I doing wrong. Whats going on here. Is there a t-mobile expert on this form that can walk me through getting this phone to do what its suppose to do.
probably a dumb question, but... are you on edge coverage?

Indeed, not yet, but as soon as it'll be made available it'll most likely appear on this site: http://www.tm-phonedownloads.com/mdas.html

Surely ringing them up and asking would be the quickest way of getting the right settings? You can just ask for them, write em down, and input them manually...
t-mobile rom
Yes I am in the edge coverage zone because I could be standing next to someone with a mda form t-mobile and they have edge and I done. Plus I live in an edge zone and I spoke with t-mobile and all of the settings are right and they told me I should be getting the coverage.
How do you have your connection set up? On my phone (T-Mobile UK), the T-Mobile Internet connection is set up as Cellular (3G, GPRS) in the dropdown box... I don't know what the options are for the US ROM, but I'm guessing they're similar...
