remote desktop without logging out of windows - JASJAR, XDA Exec, MDA Pro General

sooo, i was wondering if there was a way that instead of logging me out of windows when i use remote desktop that i can actively connect at the same time as my admin login?
kind of like how with logmein you can see what's happening on the screen?
thanks guys!

use one of the VNC implementations (there are some ppc clients and many XP servers)

vnc, i've read about that here in the forums.
alright, i;ll definately give that a shot, thanks so much.
and which programs do you guys suggest?

Google for "xp sp2 beta remote desktop multiple". Hit the first link. Won't go into too much detail here, but sp2 beta allowed multiple sessions in the way that you want, which was removed for the full product.
I hope this does not breach forum rules as we do this sort of thing on mobile devices daily - i.e. moving dll files from different devices/OS versions to other ones. If so, then I apologise and do please delete this post

I use the VNC with PT pocket office from http://www.parystec.demon.co.uk/PT_software.htm
Works great on UTMS/GPRS/WiFi

Access Your Home Computer From Your PDA.

hi there......
was just surfing the net and found out this software www.logmein.com all you need to do is register over here and download a software on the pc you wanna access and just install it.....after the installation is complete u can either access your computer from a pda from ne where or you can access it from ne other computer......
Conditions Apply :
the computer you wanna access shud be turned on and logmein software shud be running.
the computer you wanna access shud be connected to the internet.
this is how you can connect to your computer from your pda.
is this safe?
I used to use https://www.gotomypc.com/ a couple of years ago with my original XDA when I was away from the office. It did the job, but it's a bit tedius on a small screen. If you logged in from another PC it was great and I used it daily.
safe as eva it can get becaz u cannot do ne **** if u dun haf the admin username and password for tht windows machine(homepc)
You just have to trust the software.
I don't know these companies, and I'm sure they are all legit. But a bad one could simply send the ip-address, userid and password to a logging machine.
I wonder how do these programs compare to the latest version of PC Anywhere? I think PCAnywhere has a client for the Pocket PC and the plus is that you don't need to pay monthly subscription and that your data is totally safe as it's being tunneled directly to you bypassing any server. Plus Norton seem to have more resources than small companies. I also wonder how does this compare to Terminal Server Client.. Anyone?
yeah i did hear bout pcanywhere neva used it......but i heard tht its good n very stable software.....dunno whether its for free or u need to purchase it n stuff....n as far as pcanywhere hafin a client for ppc tht must be something good n worth looookin at !!
Remote Control
pcAnywhere is not free, but it does work well. You should look at VNC or RealVNC. It's free, and there is a client included in the SE ROM. There is some tweaking necessary for your firewall (if you're running one). I think the ports are tcp/udp on 5800 and 5900, but you should check the included documentation. Both client and server software can be found here: http://realvnc.com/
Terminal services is probably the best over narrow bandwidths like GPRS since it only sends the windows drawing commands to redraw the screen but you need either XP Pro or Windows server to run the server version of the program. I use VNC because I only have Win2k on my laptop - it's slow with screen updates.
VNC for 2003SE/Intel PXA: WHERE to download it??
Regarding VNC client for Qtek 9090, I miss something
(maybe because it is friday and I am getting tired) :? .
Where is it possible to find a VNC client for Qtek 9090?
If I understand well, to run it on a Qtek it has to be:
- either a Win Mobile 2003SE for Intel PXA program, or
- a Java program
Is that true?
And if it is, where can I find one, I don't find anything similar
on the http://www.realvnc.com/download.html .
Thanks,
Anton
any windows CE program will run
on xda's
there are many versions well 3 that i've seen of vnc clients for
windows ce / pda's with pocketpc now windows mobile on them
I did a google search, here's a link:
http://www.pocketpccity.com/software/pocketpc/VNC-Viewer-for-PocketPC-2001-1-2-ce-pocketpc.html
If you are running a v4 VNC server make sure it's in v3 compatibility mode since there is only a v3 PPC client available
Mark, thanks for pointing me to a link with a VNC client!
>any windows CE program will run
>on XDA's
Rudegar, regarding the HW platform, I still think that you have to
have a version compiled for your HW.
:!: However, in the meantime I found the answer at Intel's page
ftp://download.intel.com/design/pca/prodbref/251671-002.pdf
-->
Qtek 9090s (XDAs, and similar) have the PXA263 processor that is based
on Intel XScale technology, and these have the ARM* v.5TE ISA
compliant instruction set.
So a program for ARM will be the right one.

Android SQL Client

Hi All,
Does anyone know of a SQL client for Android? Just something for running basic queries when I need to check on a system and can't be arsed waiting for a computer to boot up. The databases I use are MS SQL Server.
I've searched about and can't find anything. I've also had a look at the dev docs for Android and it looks like it should be straight forward using the java.sql class but unfortunately Java isn't in my skill set at the moment and the day job & life in general doesn't leave me with much time to learn it.
If there isn't a program does anyone have any plans to write one ;-)
Cheers
Keith
Anyone ???
It'd be pretty darn insecure to open up your databases to use a remote client like that, why not just use something like phpmyadmin for it? It runs fine in the android browser and theres tons of alternatives that probably have iphone themes that would work great. Alternatively you could get debian set up and grab one of the hundreds of apps to do it in the repository
I need this as well. I'm constantly on SQL Enterprise Manager on my PC and when mobile, I have to teamviewer to my desktop and run queries there, which is such a torture.
I've bought RemoteDB, which I can't seem to get to work properly, I can't switch databases and the connection registry is very confusing.
Anybody?!

I'm also interested in this topic.
As far as opening your db's up to the internet, that's a bogus argument. Anyone remotely managing enterprise databases will be using a vpn tunnel, and not the open web.
Having an Android app to connect to Microsoft SQL and Oracle would be extremely helpful. I've been trying to figure out how to mod Oracle's SQLDeveloper to do just that but without any success so far.

SQL Client
Hi Guys
I looked for something like this for a while as well, and couldn't find anything that did what I wanted, so I made one myself
Key features I wanted are the following
Be able to connect directly to a db server. I used the jdts jdbc driver for Java to get this right
Be able to connect to any SQL Server db. I'll add support for Postgres and MySQL if this gains any popularity
List of all databases on the server (excluding system dbs) and allow you to quickly switch between them
List tables in the currently selected db, and generate Select statements for them
List stored procedures in the currently selected db, and pull the code for them so you can change it
Use a tabbed interface for the different sql queries, to allow you to run many queries at once
This is all done and works really well. Large queries take longer to run than they would on a pc, but they run nonetheless.
Let me know what you think, and feel free to suggest features. If enough people like it and use it, I'll bite the bullet and buy the developer so I can publish it on the Play store
I hope you enjoy it
ps. The installer is signed with the standard testing key, so you will need to go into your settings and allow applications from unknown sources
pps. I ask for internet access to get access to the network sockets, but dont actually connect to the internet.
danegoodwin -
I've downloaded it and played with it a bit - looks good. One feature I'd suggest off the top is storing the connection info. It's a pain having to enter the server address and username each time.
If you are still looking for a SQL client I had written one as well.
It should cover most of the popular databases and works well with tablets and phones.

I'm also open to suggestions and questions if anyone decides to give it a try.

Correct. The pro version will handle MySQL, MS SQL, PostgreSQL, Sybase, and Oracle up to version 10.1.
The MySQL version is strictly MySQL.

thanks for reply (and for nice app!)
nice, looks good... even better, seems to work well....connected to remote MySQL OK
suggestion: please auto-suggest correct ports for relevant SQLs
so, editing can only be done via queries ? (time to learn SQL syntax..?)
next, I'll try connecting to MS SQL, whilst I know a tiny bit about MySQL, I know nothing about MS, might be asking for help...
Nic,
need some help, if you can:
having issues with MS SQL, MS SQL is on a cloud server, for all I know, port could be blocked..
I've setup definition with port 1433, get 'failed to connect'
how to t/s outside of the app ?
should "telnet host 1433 " work ?
I'm getting
# telnet mssql2008.xx.yy 1433
Trying 202.111.22.33...
telnet: connect to address 202.111.22.33: Connection timed out
what else can I try ?
thanks for any pointers!

Hinting a default port is a good idea. I will see about adding in an upcoming release.
Yes right now anything beyond a simple select or delete must be done with a custom query. My goal is to make it more like the desktop editors, but since I am the only developer it might take a while. But I am not saying it won't happen.
If telnet is failing to connect then there is a firewall rule blocking your IP. Three things could fix this.
1. Add your IP to the database allow list (talk to the DBA)
2. If you can connect to the network the DB is on via VPN then you should. The db might be restricted to local IP
3. Use the SSH features of SQLTool to connect to a server on the databases allow list
You were smart to try the telnet. I would have done the same thing.
Feel free to contact me here or through the tools site. I'm happy to help

thanks.

Nice catch on the SQL Type. I will work to correct that.
For dump / backup are you referring to data or structure or both? Right now I have exporting DDL on my things to do list, but if you're referring to something else I'd like to hear it.
Thanks for the compliments on my app. I definitely want to hear more suggestions if you have them. Also please don't forget to rate well when you get a chance

So this cab allows you to access your pc/laptop from you mobile while out and about... do I have that right? If so that is very handy... woo hoo things just got a bit better...
I use this Remote Desktop for connecting to an internal Server for administrating it with my X1. It works like a charm since this tool uses the whole screen (set "Full screen" & "Fit remote desktop to screen" under "Options" for working at a Resolution of 800x480). From the Windows server a remote installed Putty forwards to the internal linux servers, the remote RDP-Client to the other Windows servers
I love my job
You could also try LogMeIN (www.logmein.com) which gives you access to your system from any pc worldwide over a secured connection.
They offer a free version and also supply an ActiveX Plugin for Windows Mobile (only working on IE, not Opera bytheway).
On your home pc you have to install a small server component then go to www.logmein.com, log in with your account name and voila: you can access the pc no matter if there are routers and/or firewalls in the way. On Desktops it also works with Java if ActiveX not allowed/installed.
Works like a charm....

Win Mobile RDC
if you search the forums there should a cab for win mobile remote desktop client (RDC). works fine on my X1 but I have to use ip-address as of the remote PC to connect as it seems unwilling to resolve the computer name. that might be my wireless config though as its shut down pretty tight!
don't remember the exact post link but a quick search should locatee it for you!

Start service on XP from Win Mobile?

I would like to be able to start and stop a service on my home media PC which is upstairs, running XP Home, preferably using my Windows Mobile (T-Mobile Compact 4 with shaks cooked ROM). The PC is wired to the network and the mobile connects via WiFi. Any idea if this is possible?
Bit more background - I have ps3 media server running on the PC, but sometimes need to restart and I'm too lazy to run up and downstairs each time.
Mortscript maybe?
First convert your XP home to Pro and install RDP.
http://www.mydigitallife.info/2008/...le-remote-desktop-in-windows-xp-home-edition/
Then just use your Remote Desktop Connection app in WinMob to connect via WiFi or 3G.
(To connect via 3G forward the RDP Port 3389 on your router to your computer)
OR
If you have Outlook, setup a rule that when you email yourself, with "Restart PS3 Media Server" as the subject, it will open a batch file on your drive.
In the batch file, you'd have the following lines: (open notepad and type in this)
taskkill /IM "XXX.exe" (Change XXX to the application's file name)
"C:\Program Files\PS3 Media\etc.exe" (change this to the proper folder and file)
Click to collapse
Save as C:\RestartPS3.bat
Thanks for the suggestions, I like the look of the first idea, I think I'll give that a go. Any issues you know of with changing Home to Pro?
I don't know of any issues personally as I've never dealt with XP home. Did you try it out?
XP Media Center also has RDP.
If you can't get your hands on a new XP, look into something like VNC like Real VNC and then google the sourceforge .net vnc viewer
Or
get a Telnet client and telnet into your pc. That'll give you a command prompt.
Or an ssh server and client like pocketputty
Or gotomypc
etc etc

I've done some creative outlandish stuff on my home network, but I hadn't ever thought of the e-mail fix. Simple instructions, and a simple fix. I'll be using that for a fix in the future for the newbs who always call needing a fix.
Granted most of them already have remote desktop so I can just fix it instead of spending 45 minutes walking them through how to fix it.
I'm just posting to give you a kudos to your idea. Impressive.
Bummer you can't thank posts in this forum... the forum I use for web design stuff lets you do that.
Anyways, thanks!

Remote Desktop software

hi all, forgive my ignorance but I would like to use my hd 2 to remotely access my home computer while out. I see the hd2 comes with remote desktop software but from what I can tell it can only be used to control computers on a lan, i.e. I'd need to be in the same domain anyway. is this correct?
z2 remote to pc is a decent piece of software ive used in the past, how well does it work on the hd2? would this new the nearest software to my needs?
tia!
its like the desktop version. it can work over the internet aswell.
Thanks - from what I've read it also supports pinch-to-zoom which is fantastic.
The only thing that concerns me is just how secure Remote Desktop is on the client side (WinXP). I guess a lot of it is down to the user to secure things, I found a decent guide here on how to minimise brute force attacks.
What appealed to me about z2 remote pc from a security point of view is that it required its own usernames/passwords to be set up as opposed to using actual Windows users and supported up to 256bit AES encryption, good stuff!
I figure I'll try both again and see how they perform.

Remote desktop from Microsoft is extremely safe to use...
For one, it uses 128-bit encryption (RC4), you login using the same login mechanisms as the windows machine... and no user with blank password or not-admin can login, so you don't suffer from that, either...
Hi guys,
You can use Logmein Hamachi Network to extend access for computers.
Go to Logmein, create an account and create a network with Hamachi.
Install Hamachi on computer do you want to connect remote, like home and work computers.
Hamachi is a VPN Network software you can use Remote Desktop Mobile to access yours computers in Hamachi Network.
There is a client for logmein Hamachi that works on HD2. Join to your Hamachi Network and use a IP Address of your computer on RDP Mobile.
The solution with Logmein Hamachi is excelent. Remote Desktop Mobile make a great job and Logmein Hamachi can connect 16 computer anywhere for free.
Try and let me know your opinion.
