I'm Markino from Italy and I've got some question about I-Mate Jam.
I don't undertand the memory management of this device: how the RAM-ROM and MMC are used by the Windows Mobile 2003 SE? If I install an application, where the files are stored? If the battery drops down what I'll lose?

Marco, in theory you should let Windows to manage your memory. The i-mate JAM has 64MB of ROM and 64MB of RAM. The ROM is mostly occupied with OS and other 3rd party software that installs automatically when you hard reset the phone. Part of this ROM is also used when using the "Permanent Storage" feature of the OS, where it lets you save some files, contacts, etc.
What should really interest you is the RAM. The OS uses this RAM for running programs (like the RAM on your PC) and the rest is used for storage. If you go to Start -> Settings -> Memory, the OS will tell you how much of your RAM is being used for Running Programs and how much is used for Storage.
The safest place for your data would be an SD Card, as anything stored on the SD card will stay in tact after a hard reset.

Well.. in your opinion what is the best way to use the Jam's RAM with a 512MB SD installed?
I can configure the device to use all the RAM space to run program and store all the file and app. in the SD or it's better to use a part of RAM to some particoular application?
The SD Ultra II are really faster in the Jam?
The more free RAM you have the faster your mobile works. I would suggest installing most of your programs on the storage card. Before installing a program make sure that it can run smoothly on an SD card. Most programs do work well when installed on the storage card so it shouldn never be a problem.
Having said that, RAM is MUCH faster than an SD card, although modern SD cards like the UltraII give over 9MB per second (66x) write speed.
A more complex option (the one I'm using) is to install a hacked ROM (aka Big Storage ROM) where you will be able to gain an extra 27MB of Storage (i.e. in RAM). You can then use this storage space for installing programs and these should work slightly faster than when installed on an SD card. However, installing the hacked ROM requires some experience with ROMS and would not suggest you go for it unless you want to end up with your JAM stuck in bootloader mode :wink:
With regards to SD cards, the faster the speed (i.e. 40x, 66x, 133x) the better.
And if you intend to use your JAM as an MP3 player I would suggest going for a 1GB or 2GB SD card. The price difference usually justifies the extra space! Before buying a 2GB card, check these forums for compatibility issues as some of them did not work on the JAM.

SD card speed on the JAM makes no difference for operating the device, since the JAM can only read/write the SD card at the standard speed - buying a faster card makes no difference.
A faster card is useful if you frequently copy large files between your SD card and your PC, but for the JAM it makes no difference.
Microsoft said in WIN2003SE it's always recommended to install mostly used programs into MAIN memory cause it's way way way faster than the extended rom or storage card. So on my old PDA2k I installed regularely used programs like Pocket Informant, Voice Command etc.. on the internal memory for enhanced speed.
I was wondering if anyone knows/ did benchmarks of Read/Write/Access Speed of all 3 memory mediums available to us JJ/Exec users ? That is Internal memory, Extended Rom (Which was unlocked thanks to buzz) as well as an SD Card.

I have a 60x SD card - at least I am TOLD it is a 60x card - but Pocket Mechanic benchmark tells me it is just 4x. (Perhaps someone else who has PM could give us THEIR SD card benchmark figures for comparison?)
It was suggested on this forum the problem might not be in the card but in the SD port. If so, the Universal's SD port could be a serious hindrance to good performance.
I'm upgrading my Advantage to a 4GB Mini SDHC card from a 2GB MiniSD card. I'd like to format both cards so that each is "fresh". Is it possible to do this in the Advantage, or do these cards need to be formatted from the PC?

don't format with the PC. Use pocket mechanics professional or sktools.
For the mini, make sure your setting is
- do not backup FAT table
- cluster size set at 32k
- Fat 16
For miniSDHC, make sure the option is
- do not backup FAT table
- cluster size set at 32k
- Fat 32
That will give you the best read/write performance.

Thanks for the info. But I need to purchase another utility to be able to do this? I've already purchased MemMaid which I like a lot, but there doesn't seem to be any card formatting options. Or is it that Mini SD cards don't really *require* formatting?

have you tried the trial version of sktools?
When the card is first delivered to you, they're already formatted. However, once in a while they get corrupted. That's when you may need to do this again. If you find the system freeze constantly or if you have missing files, chances are you have a lost clustered or chains. Sometimes I can recover them with pocket mechanics professional. At other times I prefer to start clean again by reformatting, just like we sometimes do with the microdrive.

I am interested to know why you do not recommend formatting with the PC. And, why the difference in File Allocation Tables between the 2 cards?

The last time I formatted with PC, my system kept hanging and the SKtool performance test rating plummetted to as low as 20 kb/s.
One of the key differences between normal SD(including miniSD and microSD) and SDHC (including miniSDHC and microSDHC) is the FAT thingy. It's just the way things work.
Here it is the thread you all been waiting for, these simple tools and freely avaliable software will turbo charge your X1 into the stratosphere, safely, consistantly and error free, upto 8 X faster !!!
To check these wild claims use SKTools 5 supplied here, within there is a benchmark program to test key paramenters like Video speed and Memory Card speeds, run benchmark a few times to get a consistant reading.

To find the Bench mark Program: Click Catagory at the bottom, then Information, then you will find the benchmark program.
1) Turbo charge your micro SD card.

This simple program written by XDA developers will increase the read speed of your micro SD card by a facter of 8 !
Benchmark before program: Read Speed: 2,000 approx
Benchmark after program: Read Speed: 16,000 approx
2) Turbo charge your graphics
Within SkTools5 there is a program called Optimize, it is under the first catagory : Standard. It will automatically pick 3 settings that can be adjusted, tick Font Cache Size and TCP window size. Then click the Action button at the bottom, make sure Performance is ticked and then click Optimize. The program will then do a soft reset.
Using Benchmark: Draw bitmaps: before Optimize: around 180, pathetic ! a 5 year old can draw faster than that.
Using benchmark: Draw bitmaps: after Optimize : around 780 - wow ! i-robot speed ha ha
Thats 4 X graphics - its smokin !
3) General performace tweaks

Using Advanced Configuration settings, under performances check these settings.
File System Cache: Enabled
File System cache size: 8mb
File system filter cache: 16384 sectors
Glyph cache: 32 kb
The effect of all these tweaks and enhancements means I can play 800 x 480 video perfectly just like TV, and Touch 3D is silky smooth and fast.
These are not idle claims, my X1 has vastly improved performance all round, I am finally happy with my X1, it rocks, bring on that iphone and our 'cuz' the Touch HD.

Don't see much of a difference but then again i had most of these tweaks already in with the exception of the sd card read/write speed increase.
I did these tweaks and like Bxsteez only the SD card read speed increased.. from around 2000kb to 15-16k kb... However the bitmat draw speed was already 781 from the start.. perhaps there are ways to evern further increase it?
And what more can we do?

Increasing the filesystem cache improved my file navigation. The Windows folder used to take a long time to display, now it's faster.
Can't see much improvement on the display though. BTW, any trade offs in terms of battery life with the tweaks?
Thanks for the tnyynt SD TuneUP.cab and it indeed make the Micro SD Card reading faster.
However, the Advanced Config program is not so good compared to another version I have as I cannot find many section like the calendars etc.

Can anyone say what the dispaly/graphics tweaks do? Are they modifying certain registry entries?
Could someone tell us what is exactly changed, so we don't need to download that program, and can manually edit the registry entries?
Same for the SD Card tweak, what exactly is being changed here?
For learning for us all, I think it is much more interesting and important to know what is being done and being applied so we can learn from it and improve further, than just blindly install .CAB files!
I believe you can use advanced config to do all of those tweaks with the exception of the sd card tweak. I have no idea what is being done there.

memory leaks = more freq. soft resets. they're all just registry changes so easy to revert.

What are you talking about? Most tweaks are just use more memory for caching to increase performance. The SD cab probably just enable DMA to increase throughput. All of them has nothing to do w/ memory leak.
BTW, why use SKtool instead of SPB Benchmark? SPB takes much longer but provide more detail.
Hello to everyone.
I just received a Kingston 16Gb Class4 MicroSDHC Card. The card according to Kingston's specs is preformatted in FAT32 format. I checked the card and saw that although it was totally empty, when I made a right click and chose properties, it showed as "Used Space: 32768 bytes (32kb)".
I can assume that those 32kb are related to the cluster size. Am I right? Do I have to reformat the card (to the same or to another format type e.g. FAT) and change that cluster size in an other most efficient size or shall i leave it as it is?
The preselection of FAT32 format with a cluster size of 32kb (if I have understood correctly what represents that 32kb in Used Space) is the most efficient one selection?

Leave it as it is. ALL file systems, even after a format, use a very very small portion. It's normal.
