Hi peeps !
Searched all over the forum, but couldn't find the answer.
Is there a way to assign a function to the Power On/Off button other than to turn the Athena on / off ?
I typically, for instance, would like to bind the "DisplaySwitch" psShutXP shortcut to the Power Button so that when i press it, it doesn't turn the Athena off but only the screen.
Additionnaly, if one knows how to assign a sequence of actions to the Power Button (like "locking the device + switching screen on / off"), that'd be great.
Thanks guys !
Turning off only the screen is the default action for the power button...
There is an app that many on here use (I can't think of the name) which lets you reassign most of the buttons on the Athena, including the OK and Windows button, to many different functions. You can also hack the registry to reassign the camera/comm/browser buttons if the standard reassignments that Windows Mobile gives you aren't enough - but really odd things like locking + screen off may require you to also write your own small app first.
Hi there, thank you for your answer.
Actually, the Power button must do something more than just flicking the screen off, like scaling the CPU down, spinning out the microdrive, flushing a bunch of buffers, etc.
I'm asking because of a problem I posted about in the forum (here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=353456), about my Athena being strangely slow, and its CPU being 80% used by nothing that I can see or find, when I wake it up using the Power button.
I'm trying to see if I can circumvent the problem if I can't manage to find its source and solve it, in fact.
I used AEButtons Plus, which works pretty well with ALL buttons but the Power one, and I couldn't find a reference to it in the registry either.
Thanks for your time !
Yup, that's the app I was thinking of. I don't use it so I couldn't think of the name. Sorry to hear of your slowdown problems, I've been monitoring that thread. I agree that it sounds like a hardware problem at this point.
You need DevieLock.cab. It can be set to switch off the screen and lock the device. It can by mapped to any button but Power on/off though.
Thanks man, gonna look it up right away !

Has anyone used Powercheck before? I have a question regarding the "LCD off" function, which has the potential to be quite a handy tool:
How do I switch the screen back on again without using the power button? It allows you to assign a two-button press configuration to the action, but only gives the available options of "Button 1-5". Which button is which!?
Thanks,
Rich
all the
screen toggle programs i've used react to
all buttons and screen preasure to turn on the screen once more
Doesn't work with this one unfortunately.
Thanks anyway.
what about pressing contacts button ?
that sure works with the one i'm using now
Tried everything to no avail.
I'll probably go and look for another app. Any ideas? I want to be able display battery, storage and memory levels on the display screen as well.
pocket plus v2 does all of that i believe
but some people say it cause them problems on their xda2
others say it dont
Nice one, thanks Rudegar.
i managed to figure out that button 1 is the calender button (right side of earpiece), and button two is the contacts button (left side). all good. thanks again Rudegar.
Is any useful way to remap the Green and Red Phone button and the volume slider button? I mean for launch application or any function. Thanx.
There are some such programs for volume slider.
The most simple I prefer is attached here.
Just put it to the \Windows\Startup folder. It just "unbind" slider but not remaps it to another buttons. This will allow to use slider as F6/F7 buttons in programs able to hook them e.g. Haali Reader...
Thanx
It seems to be ok but where did you attach it? On my MDA is no offered file to download at this time. ThankU.
I've got it
Ok. Now is the sheet with uploaded file appeared. I've got it and extracted it. After i run the *.exe file it does nothing. Why?
because it should do nothing
This utility just frees slider buttons from default binding to volume control.
If you have an application that understands F6/F7 hardware key pressings (slider up/slider down) you may bind these key in the program.
As for me - I use them to scroll text up and down in Haali Reader text reader program.
But (as I said above) there are another programs to use slider up/down control. Unfortunately I don't remeber where I saw these utilities - but they really exists
And, as far as I'm back to the Andes from (Blue Angel) - I think I will write another one specially for Himalaya/Andes.
Ok, let's wait some days. If there are any results - I'll post the report here
P.S.: BlueAngel is the best HW keys equipped device i've ever saw But...
Thanx once again
Thank you 4 ur help. Now i understand that. And what about the Phone buttons? Any ideas? Ex.I want to use red button as Ok/Close simulation. Any ideas how to do that? Thanks.
Nobody unmaps phone buttons. It is possible but unresonable because of HTC is a phone device also. But I'll implement this feature too.
OK
I will wait for it.
The very first (and buggy) try of HW remapping utility is done. The application setup is available HERE
After installing .CAB file go to Start -> Settings -> Buttons and see the changes...
DO NOT INSTALL THIS APPLICATION ON BLUE ANGEL!!!
It will hide four lower hardware buttons until hard reset!
1. This app was tested on Andes with WM2003se, but should work on Himalaya/Magican with WM2003 and above
2. You will lose the possibility to use hardware key mapping in other applications forl remapped buttons. I need to re-grab buttons from time to time because the system tries to thieve them from me
3. Currently I don't now how to emulate green and reed buttons functionality after unbinding them from the system.
4. I can count any number of button pressings (3,4,5...), but -
5. WinCE reserve codes for only 15 hardware buttons (40C1..40CF)
There are some ideas for future improvement. But it would be nice to know your thoughts.
Just to "stimulate": I can create settings screen during setup to allow flexible configuration where you will
- choose which buttons to handle and how many key pressings to detect;
- choose option to unbind and/or re-map volume and phone buttons
- ???
And let me take a time-brake for 2 days before next programming session
The utility is ready. It allows you to:
remap each standard hardware button to 2 or 3 "virtual", simulated via double or triple clicks;
use volume slider to simulate Up/Down direction keys or create additional "virtual" hardware buttons;
remap Red and Green phone buttons to 1,2 or 3 hardware buttons each.
In a result you may create up to 15 hardware buttons (system limit)
Just install program and check Start -> Settings -> Buttons.
Here is Oficial AEBPlus home page, full desktop-based setup (~27K) and Direct link to CAB file (~30K)
Well done!
Excellent software! Thank you once again for your work. Works very very well!
man this is great really like it
works perfect
Seems to work great. Haven't had it running long enough to see if the camera button will get stolen back (big problem for me on XDA IIi), but being able to map the volume is great.
In the next version any chance of adding an <enter> option like Vito Button Mapper which I think just sends a <carriage return> to select whatever is highlighted.
Is "<Ok/Close>" option in button settings applet not the same?
NO, <OK/Close> generally tends to close the current window rather than selecting whatever is highlighted.
Also whatever application keeps on stealing back the camera button is still doing it. I don't know if it is part of the UK O2 customisations or the core PocketPC Rom, but eventually whatever function is mapped to the Camera button gets re-mapped back to the camera. This also happened to me with the standard button mapper and Vito button manager. It's a little annoying since the camera button is the most usefully positioned, and it is also easily knocked, starting the camera at awkward times.
Ok, I'll add this option for camera button (a bit later, in a case other suggestions arrives).
As for the re-hooking button by camera application: AEBPlus initializes all of the buttons from time to time. Currently this take place every 30 seconds. So if you will wait a bit - all buttons should be re-grabbed again
This does not seem to help because whatever application that is resetting the camera does it in the same place as you are storing the button mappings. When I go into the Buttons Setup it will now say that the Camera button is mapped to the Camera.
Yes,I see... It looks like Camera application is a pushy application . The solution is to remap "normal" Camera HW button to 3 press instead of one, but I don't like this.
Anyway - utility was released.
New features: added option to emulate Enter key with Camera button.
Hi AE, your utility is great. It is very useful but SIMPLE and SMALL.
I used it instead of other button mapper software.
There're some issues need tobe improved:
1) Mapping "Green" and "Red" button:
Enable mapping when they're iddle only (phone function does not work).
E.g: I'd like using Red button to close running app. But in phone function, Red button is still used to hang-up the phone as original its function. Anytime I have a phone call, I can use Red button to cancel a outgoing/incoming call.
You can refer the program of mamaich in this web site.
2) Single press is too low:
I press a key one time and wait 5 secs or more until it works. It's too slow. Can you improve? Double-press is OK.
3) Press n hold:
Can you add "single press n hold" for all hardware-keys? I think "single press n hold (after 3-3.5 secs)" is more convenient than "double press" or "tribble press". Do you think so?
Hi AE, very usefull application! Is there any way that we can have an options screen, where we can change the key options we get after installing the app? That would be easier to edit our preferences if we want to make changes to our initial choices. Furthermore I added a Mortbutton to one of your simulated hard keys. Each Mortbutton can show a list of 12 apps for a buttonpress. That means That I can now bind more than 60 apps to the buttons in total! Very good for one-handed use of my Magician, thanks!
Does anyone know a registry hack yet for making it possible to remap ALL hardware buttons (or at least the OK button below the jog-wheel, cause this seems to be hard-coded to the Windows-menu) !?
Preferably a reg-hack that (re)enables this options in the regular \Settings\Buttons tab...
Another problem i want to fix (apart from the ROM being immature) is the fact that i have to go all the way into the Bluetooth-settings on the CommManager screen to connect my Jabra 620s in stereo/audio-mode, which is quite anoying and timeconsuming...
Some other strange thing is that when i want use Voicecommand (while playing audio) to either call someone or speak a command to WMP, this will only work when i use VC-assigned button on the device, and NOT with the answer/end button on my headset (wich should be working like the VC-button on device).
Anyone able to help me here ?
PS: i'm quite experienced WM user dating back to the Wyvern/PalmsizePC CE 2.12 devices...but i just can't seem to find my way around these huge registries in todays devices anymore... guess i'm getting old...
Anyone please ...?
I would like to know too. Style-wise, there are a lot of things HTC got wrong with the Trinity. In fact, I found the HTC Wizard better designed.
Damn thing needs IE, Messaging, Comm Manager buttons and a Volume slide but instead it has 2 OK buttons and a jog/dial which I rarely use.
Not to mention how buggy the release ROM is, what with huge delays between standby mode and MiniSD cards requiring re-insertion to work properly.
P.S. It would be nice to be able to change the functionality of the jog/dial wheel to volume control.
Yup - this is driving me nuts too.
I have 7 hardware buttons (inc the power button) on the trinity and I can only map 3 of them from Settings.
It's a real handicap (& Voice Command is conflicting with the voice dial button - or at least that's what I think is happening with my repeated failed installations).
Some wisdom from the forum would be almost as appreciated as a fix
Thanks,
M1

I don't have my Trinity yet, but have you tried some of the 3rd party Button remappers that are available? Magic Button etc.

I got my Trinity last friday and am using a 2Gb MiniSD card and so far no problems with it. I feel no real delay when coming out of standby mode and no problem at all with the MiniSD card, maybe you got a early version of the ROM that contained this particular problems.
I do agree with you with the OK buttons, but i also understand the way they were designed, the button close to the jog wheel is to be used together with the jog wheel so that you can single handedly use the machine.
Lets see if someone suggests a good 3rd party tool to remap the buttons and then everybody is happy ;-)

I am able to get VC to work with call/answer button when using my Motorola headsets H300 and HS805. The phone needs to be out of standby mode ie screen needs to be on. I can't seem to get it to work with my R35 I.tech stereo wireless headset. I guess this could mean compatibility issues between headsets? Does the call/answer button work if you are not listening to music?

Yes...you're right...it does work when the screen of my trinity is on. But offcourse when listening to music the screen is gonna be off...
The button on the headset does activate voicecommand when device is on (ie screen on) and no music is playing. But i'd rather have it understand my commands like "what track is this" while music plays (without having to take out the phone of my pocket).
As for the button-mapping: i'm familiar with the buttonmappers out there, but another application on my trinity is just not what i need... Is there really no way to get to this functionality through the registry ? I've searched quite a chunk of the registry but gave up; i just can't find it...

Precisely: one handed operation... That's what i want, so i want the button next to the jogdial to be the ALT+TAB function (which is available through Spb PocketPlus)...so i want to be able to map this to whatever button i like, not just the 2 options HTC gave me... (i don't count press'n hold as an extra button).
I think it's quite ridiculous to have TWO buttons activating the startmenu, and have them hardcoded to that. What's the point in 2 buttons doing the same thing ?
Being able to change the 'Windows' button woukld also be a fine sollution...
Try AE Button Plus. Your solution will not lie in the registry.

Just tried, it works (AE Button Plus -> File -> Add button)
But i found a little bug, after i used it to swap Right Softkey and Start Menu Button, Start Menu Button works fine (changed to be Right Softkey) but for Right Softkey, no matter how i press it, start menu will not be shown !!!
Because, after i press Right Softkey, Start Menu Button event is triggered, but Start Menu Button is set to be Right Softkey by AE Button Plus, so at the end pressing Right Softkey will be regarded as pressing REAL Right Softkey rather than Start Menu.
The most strange thing is that such bug will not happen when pressing pressing Start Menu Button =.="
Any idea ? How to solve it ?
Thanks in advance

And pressing Camera button, the Start Menu Button event will be triggered. it seems that there're some bugs in "Add button" functions of AE Button Plus

Hi guys,
I'm too looking for a way to remap the startmenu-button for e.g. starting an application. No 3rd party software I tried so far is able to do so...
Any suggestion how to reassign the startmenue button to call a specific application?
Cheers

AEButton Plus maps all but the standby button...
... on my Wizard. Well, it doesn't touch the soft-reset, the camera gets funky when I try to map it, and I can't seem to move the vibrate function off the hold "Comm Manger" Key. Given I've got 50 different hardware button options, (or 37 added if I leave all the default functioning in place) with this nifty shareware (basically fully functional if you want to use it free forever), who cares about the dumb camera button (not in the count above).
My biggest problem is remebering where I mapped it all. My second is making decisions about how to map them.... :|| (that's a repeat sign in music-talk)
You gotta try it. I'd be curious to find out how it works on your hardware.
http://ae.inc.ru/aebplus.php
I'd like to be able to hold a button (other than Button 5) and have it execute a command/program. Can it be done?
ie. Hold OK button to launch X program? I've googled with no luck.
Search the forums. There is a thread by Sleuth255 (?) with the title PTT Function Hacked or something similar.
I found that thread. But it's doing what my TyTN does anyways... allows you to hold the button 5 and launch. I need that function for the other buttons as well.... unless I'm missing something.
i use ae button plus for this.
its free on a trial with a popup on phone phone startup, or $7 to unlock.
its FANTASTIC. interface isn't overly intuative to setup, but basicly you can have
1 click, 2 click, 3 clicks and press to hold on *all* the hardware buttons do different things.
its also got a reasonalbe app switcher built in, and way to turn the screen off and lock the keys if you want your media to keep playing when the phone in in a lower power state. *(not sure how much this saves in terms of power, but the key lock is why i use it)
For example,
my internet button (up and right of screen) is now set to
1 click - Load IE,
2 click - Load MusicID (listens to any song being played and then tells you the artist and track)
3 click - Load tomtom (usfull so i can switch between messages/phone calls and tomtom when driving quickly.
press and hold - turn off screen and lock keys for media playback.
Wish it was more popular i think its a fantastic application! you should give it ago.
as an aside note, i think there is a reg hack to do the press and hold on other buttons, but honestly do your self a favour and try

Thank you. Exactly what I need. Cheers.
Hi All
I've been looking in to locking down an Athena and taking control / disabling all the hardware buttons. I can disable most of them in Start->Settings->Buttons. The ones I am having particular trouble with are the OK and Windows buttons to the left of the screen. I have trawled the registry and am yet to come up any answers on how to do this. Does anyone know where the registry keys may exist to do this?
Cheers

I'm curious why you would want to take away such a useful things away. Currently I use all the hardware button and wish there are more available. I use it for things such as changing SIP, rotate screen, start IGO, and control myp3 (such as volume up, volume down, next song, previous song, blank out screen, bring up the playlist, pause, unpause. This is while the device remains inside my belt pouch). The ok button is extremely useful in doing things such as hiding the phone application after use. Similarly if you're using program such as VITO fun contact, you could hide it after use without having to exit this extremely memory tiny application and able to instantly access your contact again anytime. Why would you want to disable all these useful features?
AEBPlus free version will disable all buttons
http://ae.inc.ru/aebplus.php
But I agree, unless you're developing an app that comandeers the buttons, why reduce functionality? You can lock the buttons while the unit is off. ???
