Get a memory card reader and a microSD.

You can also use a bluetooth dongle for the pc and then beam files directly to your Wing without connecting with activesync.

Can we do that by wirless router? Say both the devices are connecting to the same wirless router.

A bluetooth dongle requires you to install the bluetooth software on the PC. If this is a locked down corporate computer, this is a no-go.
The WiFi sounds intriging... there are ways to browse network shares... but then again, this requires you to have wireless access to the network.

Hi there,
I’ve have successfully used file sharing over a wireless network between my pocket pc and my computer, it was even stable enough to stream and watch full sized divx movies (not resized for pocket pc) on my pocket pc. The only catch is that I’m using Resco Explorer to map a network drive on my pocket pc. I haven’t tried using the default Windows Mobile Explorer yet.

Yes i'm doing the same thing, for some reason i can get fullsized videos to stream though, can with music not video though, what player do u use ?
Overall its pretty easy to browse the network and share files, just use resco explorer and map the right folder

I use card export in my old BlueAngel... install it and the PPC connects to windows as a mass storage device... this and a spare usb cable in my bag... no need for anything else.

If the computer already has bluetooth you can create a pairing profile. From then you can right click on the file you would like to send and select send to bluetooth then to your profile. This is best if used with smaller files such as cabs. Hope this helps. Works for me.

Good idea. I didn't think about that. You can download WM5torage to do the same thing. It'll turn your PocketPC into a portable drive.

If you have wireless you can user simple file sharing on the computer and see the share on pocket via Resco Expl. or Windows Commander. : \\pc_name\disk_share. If you want to made file transfer like cabs or music, movies it's very simple and you don't need card reader blablabla...
Right know I want to made the revers way to share the PPC to PC.
Any ideea?

How to browse PC local harddrive from PPC

Dear all,
Just wonder whether we can browse specific folder or file located in the local PC harddrive from our PPC. To be specific, for example, can I open a movie player in my XDA and browse for a specific movie file located in my desktop so that I can watch the whole movie through my PPC.
I have also tried accessing the shared file using Bluetooth connection, but when I locate the movie file, the whole file appears to be transferring (copying) to my ppc local drive.
Any comments please!
You want streaming..
Look into streaming servers..
I would personally recomend darwin..
I've streamed music to my PDA over wifi, haven't tried video. Used Windows Media Encoder
http://www.jakeludington.com/archives/000217.html
pocketlan
http://www.pocketgear.com/software_detail.asp?id=2825
Network utility for PPC 2002/2003.Browse,map multiple network share folders, printers, open mp3,movie on network with WiFi 802.11b,IP Config,Ping, IP Renew, Wake on LAN
if you can get tcp/ip access via bluetooth then use pocketlan to map the shared drives on your pc, then you can use fileexplorer (new icon called network) and then click on the files/playlists, they will then stream across instead of downloading!
dont try and stream movies at high resolution, it just wont work...well
streaming options (webserver based)

If you want a free solution, try GSfinder+. It also has the option to map network drives into \Network. GSfinder+ can be found here: http://www.geocities.jp/todamitsu2004/GSFinderE.htm. It works great with BetaPlayer at least (I use it for [email protected] mpeg4-recordings, 200kbps for the video, 128kbps for the sound).

will bluetooth work for networking? Or do I have to buy a wireless sd card?

Can I revert back to original state after hard reset? or even soft reset? Can I still activesync to pc using bt even with this new driver? shall I change settings? How is video streaming performance? acceptable even with files as large as 500 mb?
when you hardreset all data is lost
you can restore your backup from activesync if you made one
softreset is just like reboot on a pc it dont do anything
about streaming then the idear is that you dont download all at once but download as you need to display it and then download a bit more and..........
so it should not matter how large the file you are streaming is

streaming is not about the overall size of the file,
it depends on the bitrate of the file adn the bandwidth of the line (bluetooth only bout 1mbps???)
Guys, thank you for your reply. I mean after installing the Widcomm BT driver, will I still be able to activesync using BT? I'm currently doing this using the included BT driver.

my network places

I have recently purchased an o2 xda mini s, and have been browsing through this site for about a week. been very impressed. i have a question for you - is there anyway of accessing my computer through the wireless lan? EG accessing the computer hard drive, and playing a film on the xda. thanks ben
Yes there is but I'm not sure how to do it on a "Vanilla" WM5 machine. I use Resco Explorer which is a commercial application but allows you to move the "Network" folder below "My Device" and connect to shared drives. These shared drives over the network (GPRS / WiFi / USB Active Sync etc) will then show up in ANY program which has a file browser.
I'm sure there is a way of doing it on a plain machine but Resco Explorer is so much easier and nicer for any kind of file manipulation....
nice one, im looking into it now
ok iv got resco, and im connected. i can see the network places, and i can acess my shared folder, but when i try to open a music file, media player opens and says the parameter is incorrect? anyone know what this means?!
You're right you know!
This is the only app on my device that has this problem (Well no surprises there seeing as it's MS s/w!)
I am using both Pocket Music and TCPMP (Free!) for video / music (TCPMP does both) and neither have that problem over the network.
Also try MortPlayer as that is another excellent skinnable player for FREE....
TCMP will access shared folders/files. Or should that be \\computer\shared_folder\media.files It works pretty well over wifi for me. If you are happy to create your playlist on your pc and stream to the PocketPC then Microsoft media encoder will do the job. I'm just looking into Orb www.orb.com which should allow me to view/listen to my media anywhere I have access to the internet on my Wizard.
Hope this helps,
Al
thats great, got tcpmp running really smooth, even without cutting the resolutions down. im very impressed. is there a way to make tcpmp the default application? iv always had symbian phones uptil now-which are considerably more stable, but not quite as manipulative iv noticed.
one other thing, is i had a prog for my symbian device that put my desktop up on the screen and gave me total control of the pc with it, do u kno of another app that will do this on ppc? thanks so much!

Change the file associations in tcpmp under options/settings/
thats great thanks!
Did some searching and found this older thread.
Basically, I was wondering if any body knows of a free prog, or reg hack, to make the network folder visible and then allow mapping the network drive?
I found an older prog caller NetRunner, from a Spanish site. It works on my older wm2003 devices (though it always asks for my pass work even if I tell it to save it) And it will work on my MDA, but I can only access the network drive through net runner. It won't show up in file explorer.
So any ideas? Thanks
Ok, Never mind.... I feel sheepish!
I have GSfinder installed and it allows you to show the network folder and to map the drive................
One question about it though- even time I soft power down the phone and turn it back on and try to browse my network drive it keeps asking for my password. Even if I tell it to save it..any way to fix this?
Thanks

This usually means that the music file type is not supported by windows media player. ie: asx,m3u,etc. In file explorer, does the music file you're trying to play have the wmp icon, or some other player icon beside it?

You should use ORB. Install it on your pc and you can stream any file or video from your pc to your phone. Works like a charm overhere, so you may give it a try! Via and easy to use webinterface you can select the file you want to use. It even recodes video files on the fly to a lower bitrate so the Vario can handle the stream without a glitch.
thanks for the reply, but doesnt orb go though my internet bandwidth? i'll give it a goes though.
thank you

stream with my pc music?

is it possible to access the music playlists on my pc with the hd2 over wifi?
I don't think play lists will work, but using as different file manager such as resco you can map network drives and play music from them.I do this with both a music and a video folder using resco.
i cant see my pc as a device on my wifi list. want to know how to cennect my hd2 to the pc using wifi. i am using my home wifi network with no problems.
No you wont see it as a device
On your PC, share a folder with some music in it, , lets say your pc is called 'comp' and the folder is called 'muzic'. Share that folder, then on your phone, (using resco, i dont use anything else but the principle is the same)
on your phone, in resco you go to 'my network', click 'map network drive' and you should see your pc as an item on your network. click that, it should show the shared folder muzik and you should be able to click that to set it as a mapped folder. If you have username/password on your pc, it will ask for that info.
On mine, it doesn't always show properly the network shares, so i have to put the shared folder in manually, using \\comp\muzik
wow that is amazing, thx for that. I can access all folders from my pc and view/listen to them directly on the hd2 using wifi including pictures, documents and music.
I continue to be impressed with this phone.
An iPhone user recently showed me that he could control his music collection from his phone and get it to play through his sound system from the pc. I dont suppose there is anything similar in winmo?
heh yea. love it.
I'm sure you can probably do the control stuff, maybe win media player can do it, or maybe media center has an extender.I never do stuff like that so I cant help there.
you can always go down the remote desktop method of control.

streaming video to hd2?

I purchased a Lacinema Classic hd, (cheap nas drive), and i have it connected to my home network. Can anyone tell me how to stream video from it to my hd2? if it is possible.
any help appreciated
Check this out: http://www.orb.com/
Hiya
I connected my HD2 via WiFi to router and i can stream movies from my pc (with Win XP, connected to router with cable) to my phone without problem, they runs smoothly and I watch them in coreplayer, its ok for me, so maybe try something lika that, good luck
yeah thats what i want to do but without using the pc. It must be possible to stream the content straight to my phone just dont know how.
i am not personally experienced with "NAS drives"...but i've always assumed these drives would be available to other network machines/devices as shared folders, accessible from windows using the "\\MACHINE\SHARE_NAME" syntax.
please verify my assumption. if such is the case, then look for "schap's htc network plugin" and download and install it. this little tool will let you map shared network folders onto the \Network folder on your HD2. once the mapping is complete, all applications on your device will be able to see and use the files on the shared folder as if these files are on your storage card. so you can then fire up coreplayer or pocket player or what have you and enjoy!
