opening doc takes time - P3600 General

hello everyone,
i'm using my p3600 & I also have the kaiser tytn2, mainly for books reading. have i have big files in doc format (5-9mb each), but becuase it takes them forever to load then i converted them to txt files, which now weighs only 1.5mb but also takes 15sec to load from the mini sd card (from the device itself it takes 11sec).
I have some few questions:
1. what can i do to make it faster? maybe a different rom? maybe a different doc viewer? maybe a different mini sd card (i use transcend 2gb)?
2. are you familiar with other mobile phone that can handle this task like it should be. i had old palm's which would open it faster and which less memory & cpu power?
3. after trying different rom's i now tried to flash and couldn't. getting error message 270, image file is corrupt. any idea?
thanks for the help.

(Yet another) Big Storage question

Finally decided to bite the bullet and try the big storage hack. Dumped my ROM onto a SD card then loaded it into the hex editor which promptly complained about lack of memory (on a pc with 1gb of ram). I then noticed that the bin file was 512mb ! Yes you guessed, I used a 512 card to dump the rom.
From what I have read so far it seems that romupdate creates a file the same size as the storage card so my question is this, whats the minimum size of sd card that can be used ? I have an old 32mb card lying around and I dont really want to have to buy a 128mb card because all it will be used for is this one task.
Don't you have any imagination? How about switching to another hex editor. Now the answer to your next question in queue: use the search function to find out about other hex editors.
3 things:
- enlarge your pagefile
- look in the options of your editor, sometimes it wants twice the filesize for memory & you can adjust that to once
- read http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=46628
Thank you for your replies gentlemen.
@Chatty... Yes I have an imagination but I fail too see how it may be of use with this particular question.
@oltp... Thanks, I will look at those options. I dont think I had spotted the post you linked to but any search criteria involving big storage threw up so many results that I got tired of wading through after an hour or two.
Will have another bash soon, but Im still curious if it can be done with less than 128mb, after all it isnt the entire ROM that needs editing.
I'm using the hexeditor from the ftp & when you know what you're doing, you can even specify it to use only 70MB which is sufficient for this purpose.

Files on mini SD card disappear! Please help!!

The weird problems happened to my Dopod D810 twice.
The first time: The whole file system on card went crazy with all folder names became gibberish (like: &%*()jhui&%^&&!#%&). After a soft reset many folders disappeared, a few folders remained but became duplicated but many files inside were not readable (e.g there are two identical folders named My ebooks).
I thought it might be card-related and I hard reset, formated the card, and re-installed all softwares.
Today it happened again but differently:
- I had some video files in Storage card\My Documents\My Videos folder like this ... video_28.mp4, video_29.mp4, video_30.mp4
- After a video shot, I opened Resco Explorer to check and to replay but all folders and files previously in Storage card\My Documents disappeared. Other folders and programs on the card were still intact and ran fine
- I tried shooting another few video clips (with option saving to card, of course). They all disappeared after shooting.
- But the weird thing is: After shooting, I chose the preview option and WMP played the file well. I paused the playing, check the properties of the now playing file and it showed clearly: Storage card\My Documents\My videos\Video_33.mp4
But in File Explorer and Resco explorer the Storage card\My Documents is absolutely empty despite the file IS BEING PLAYED in WMP
- I tried again and again, the video clips preview were always named in sequence like video_34.mp4 then video_35.mp4, .... but they all mysteriously disappeared.
What is wrong? Has anyone experienced the same problem? Is that a hardware failure (writing-to-card)? Should I send in for repair? Please help! I have some important clips that I really want to keep. Is there any way, any tool to help recover the files that are probably still there?
Do you have another miniSD to run some tests?
This could give you an idea of what is going wrong?
The miniSD could be malfunctioning.
Regards!
Apparently, you are a new user here...
The Trinity has a hardware problem that HTC can't still fix by now. Go search for some posts. There is currently NO solution available - you may try cards with smaller capacity, or you do some preventive measures, such as install SD Sentry.
I have found that rebooting without the card in and then putting it back in sorts this out. Also I am attaching fixes from HTC and others which stop minimise this happening. Finally, it is suggested you use the Sandisk MiniSD Ultra II cards instead as they have a faster transfer rate. These are available on Amazon for about 15 UK pounds.
Hawk
Damn it! They're gone
Thanks for all the suggestion.
I did reboot without the card then reinserted it but didn't help.
The card is Kingston 2GB
@Nighthawk2050: what does the first patch do? the second patch seem to be for another set, not Trinity?
@WW2250: what does SD Sentry do?
I bought a Transcend card reader, but could not recover any video files.
The card reader however showed the My Videos folder containing only one last video clip.
It also showed 4 other folders which report error when clicked on

p0.gif
There are also 2 other files
/p300p1..gif (two dots) with a reported size of 1,838,093 KB
i/p320p1..gi with a reported size of 789,709 KB
I think with a faulty product like this, I have the right to return it (to Three Australia - a 3G provider)
I think they only have one other 3G set which is the Dopod 838 Pro
Please advise if the 838 Pro has any similar problem (or other potential problems)?

First patch (miniSD HC Patch.cab) don't work....download the new one from the official thread (anyways, it work only on LVSW's ROM v2.0.1.1 and on AX3L's ROM anyversion) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=1341004#post1341004
Second patch (ArtemisSDEnhancement.CAB) is only for ARTEMIS, not Trinity
Try Panasonic SD formater for format your SD card.

The first patch might not be working for WM5, since it was originally extracted from Hermes WM6 ROM. But you mileage may vary.
SD Sentry is a program written by a Spb developer, who had exactly the same problems of you (for his Artemis though). At that time, there was no fix available from HTC. So he wrote that little program to check constantly for indications of SD card corruptions, such as missing files or folders, screwed up file and folder names, etc.
If such indications are found, it offers you a warning and an option to reboot such that you won't be doing further damages to your card writing to it in an already corrupted state. If you reboot in time, you can yourself a day before it wreaks havoc.
For details, you may want to visit his page at http://www.nixie.narod.ru/sdsentry/index-en.htm
BTW, there was an official fix from HTC for Artemis, but none is released for your precious Trinity, AFAIK.

Don't know for sure for 838 Pro - but it seems to me that this problem is a special free feature from HTC for newer devices like Artemis and Trinity. Besides this issue, I think it's not worth to go back to 838 Pro since it's an older device, slower, and has different sets of problems by itself.
I read extensive from the Artemis forum - and from there I learn that they have a worthy workaround that you may want to try: Don't ever press the power button - let the power save timeout take care of shutting down the machine when not in use.
Their theory is that there's a problem with the HW/OS that interact with the SD card whenever there's a power event, probably lies in the cache or the controller, creating corrupted filesystem data, when unfortunately being actually flushed to your card, would actually inflict real damage. So, if you get strange card suddenly disappear errors, strange filename folders, etc... you'd better reboot it immediately.
Removing the card and re-inserting it seems to reinitialize the driver and will probably revive your card too, but I'd say reboot it is your best bet.
Looks like you now need some software recovering tools to savage your files from your already damaged card. Grab as many as you can recover, re-format the card, and install SD Sentry.
I thought Dopod 838 Pro (Hermes 100) is more or less the same as a Trinity with a keyboard and without GPS?
Anyway, maybe I have to stick with this Trinity for now.
About SD Sentry: another program, would it further slow down the phone?

It's incredibly light-weight. I even forgot its existence once installed and configured. It never get into your way unless absolutely necessary - when your card get corrupted
Hope it helps.
Hmm maybe its only my trinity but I observed everytime all the SD data is lost is when I use the internet explorer to download and install something onto the ppc.I've done downloading Flash player 7 from my ppc internet explorer and after a soft reset the sd data is also lost.tell me if I am wrong pls.maybe we can avoid it by not using the ppc i.e. to download stuff and intsall it
if you can reproduce it every time exactly, then it's good. Record the exact procedure and tell HTC about it. I read the guys at artemis forum did that and get a fix from HTC.
I want to do that but I just couldn't reproduce it.
Hello,
same pb with me. Pretty anoying...
I saw that i'm sharing this pb with several people. but doing a wide search on google doesn't give the impression that every body has this pb.
Is it a hardware pb, should I take in back for repair.
Does a WM6 upgrade would solve it ?
thanks for your help.
It's indeed annoying especially when you got nothing left in the card. I don't know about the scope of your search in google - but it's a pretty big problem here in this forum - definitely not limited to Trinity or Artemis.
I am sure not everyone encounter this problem - since it's quite related to write i/o activities to the card. Playing music with media player count as one - since it updates (read: writes) the DRM files in the card automatically whenever it is running; people who use camera reported corruption; and the original poster who downloads and installs cabs on the card.
It's definitely a hardware + software problem, which might be able to get fixed by a software driver patch, but only after HTC has identified the root cause of the problem. That's why I asked s4cr3d to report the bug to HTC if he has a recipe to reproduce the bug step by step.
Take it back for repair? Forget it. WM6 doesn't seem to resolve it as well. I read someone with WM6 (cooked) still have this problem. Don't know about the official rom.... yet.
thanks for your answer. need to wait then... still great device...
I'm using AX3L's ROM v2.0.8 and I must say the SD problem affects WM6 cooked ROMs too. It seems to me that it has something to do with software/hardware incompatibilities.
The specs are as follows:
- Corsair 2GB MiniSD
- AX3L v2.0.8
- AX3L ExtROM v2.0.5
The problem started when I used Resco Explorer's built-in unzip tool to unzip a file onto the Storage Card. Everything went ok until I opened up "Storage Card" and went, "where's the My Documents folder?". In a spectacular twist, I managed to corrupt the card (thru formatting, re-formatting again and again) and now it's dead. I used Panasonic SD Formatter, formatting in Linux, etc. and they weren't much help. My word of advice is to store everything safe in your computer the moment you see disappearing files because it might just go downhill from there.
I strongly believe it is Resco Explorer but I cannot verify this cos' I don't wanna screw up more cards.
I have since bought a Sandisk 1GB card and reflashed AX3L v2.0.8 without the ExtROM (and so, no Resco Explorer). It might be the card, it might be Resco Explorer but I have had no problems since (it's been 10 days now).
Anyway, hope this helps someone in some way. Will definitely try the SDSentry program just to be absolutely safe. These cards don't come cheap over here..

MicroSD RAM Hack! WICKED!!

Phm RegEdit
QUOTE: "Speed up your Metro HTC Mogul with a Micro SD Card I would like to share this hack with my friends that have a smartphone on metro pcs.
I found this hack on a different site, tried it and works great on my mogul (flashed). One way I tested to see if it worked or not was by using Opera mobile. Everytime I surfed the internet on my phone, Opera would pop up saying i was out of memory (I have so many apps installed on my pda) and to close the tabs. It got so annoying that I uninstalled it and have been using PIE since then. Until recently, installed Opera mobile again, and notice the difference with this hack. No more pop ups. I went from site to site and it loaded it up. I notice major speed. I went to sites that had a hard time loading without the pop up warning me. This time, no pop up and fast upload... Now Opera mobile is the best web browser. My phone also has less freezes and boots up very fast after a reset.
I have an Kingston HC 8gb micro sd card and it works great.
As usual, use this tweak at your own risk.
How to use Micro SD card as RAM
1.Open a new folder “Volatile” on the SD card
2. Change the following key, using the registry editor:
from \HKLM\System\Filesys TempPath = \Application Data\Volatile
to \HKLM\System\Filesys TempPath = \Storage Card\Volatile
3. Turn off the pocket pc with the power button for about 30 sec (not soft reset/hard reset).
4. Turn it on again.
What software you can use to edit the registry:
PHM RegEdit (freeware): http://www.phm.lu/Products/PocketPC/RegEdit/
Here is also another speed hack if you don't want to use the one up above.
I have applied both tweaks to my phone.
Speed Hack
Navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\GDI\GLYPHCACHE\
Changed limit from 16384 to 32768
Navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\StorageManager\FATFS
Changed - CacheSize to 4096
(NEW!) Navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\StorageManager\Filters\f sreplxfilt
Change “ReplStoreCacheSize” dword decimal value to 4096 or 8192

I tried this in my Mogul and it seemed to work with my MicroSD 1GB. I noticed it booted up very fast, but the Opera Mobile 9.5 beta still showed Out of Memory. I guess I'll just have to wait until my 4GB MicroSD comes in from Amazon! There is some speed difference though with both on. No wonder it worked so well on his phone because he had an 8GB MicroSD! Anyways, just wanted to let most of you guys know.. PEACE
I posted this same message on the original thread as well.
This shouldn't work for the fact that it's not giving you additional memory, all "folders" in the phone are part of ROM memory, not RAM, so even tho you point that at your sd card, it's still not giving you back any ram which is what the Moguls lack, I think it's just a coincidence that you see a different in Opera. To prove me wrong, undo this hack, (reboot your phone) check your "free" ram, and then redo the hack reboot, and check it again.
You should see the exact same amount of free ram. And therefore won't gain any benefit.
Another thing, depending on your SD card, some being faster than others, if the SD card memory is slower than the built in ROM memory of the phone, this could actually lead to things being slower. I imagine in your case you have a fast card, and you see speed improvements because of it being able to write faster to the card than your ROM, but not any other benefits.

WOW
Best registry edit hands down i have about 7 apps open and it isn't lagging or freezing the apps i have open are thumbcal total commander tcpmp palringo calculator skyfire W.V.D. and task manager ... simply amazing and unheard of opening this many things with out lag just wow
hmmm doing some testing now .. will report later.. so far so good.. BTW
the regedit it damm cool..
I have cabbed up all of these tweaks for those of you that don't want to do the registry edits yourself. I have tested it with the emulator and it works great, but install this at your own risk.
Enjoy,
dwizzy130
Now it says I'm using up 10% more RAM than I was using before. Doesn't work for me....placebo? Has anyone else looked at their RAM usage?

Un mod
This is a very interesting idea. I've tried it and also found the loss of free ram to be a problem. But I'm running M2d. I tried dwizzy130's cab (which uninsulated with no prob). The volatile folder was populated with hidden files but i did get the low mem warning.
dogw/mogul: Are you running a stock rom? Whats your setup? I'd like to see if i can reproduce your results. I have made so many mods to my phone that one or a few maybe causing the prob. Maybe a different rom/radio/setup would produce better results.
This is an eyebrow raiser for sure!
Edit: Ok, By following the instructions manually I have the edit in place with out the extra loss of memory. The phone will still close apps after a point but your are correct in saying that the lag is reduced! It is noticeable. I'm thinking of dropping M2D and going back to dcd 3.4 just to see what performance would be like.
has anyone removed the SD card just to see what will happen?
I'm running M2D Reload 1.1
DCD 3.6.3
Radio 3.4
Sandisk 8GB HCSD
the cab install makes my phone use about 10% more ram but when i uninstalled it and just have the first hack i had 10 programs open including s2p and wmp playing music on both and still ran pretty smooth with very little lag. works nicely. i have 4gb card and 2gbs taken up by music and cabs ect. the other 2gbs is free.

I originally posted that on HowardForums... my mogul was fast and never lagged... but, I like to experiment with tweaks and 3rd party apps... so I had to do a hard reset... here is where an issue came up... using Resco Backup, I was unable to successfully restore for the fact that it was tweaked toward the SD card... my suggestion... use Sprite Backup... make an original exe copy and save it to your external card... then save another exe copy of the tweak version... so now you have two back ups...
Now, with the opera mobile... use this tweaked version of Opera Mobile browser http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=459378
No more "out of memory" issues Opera Mobile with Dexter's version....
I am still using my old 1GB SD card I had in my old phone (LG VX8300). Since I use orb for everything, I didn't see a need to get a new card. But with this hack I am tempted to do so. Hmmm got to think about this one.
edit: going to do this hack first then see if there is improvement. If its slow but have more memory then I will definetly get a faster card.
edit (again): can someone make a cab file for the first set of registry settings? Thanks!
If you were using your microSD card as RAM it would last you a few hours a best, cards cannot sustain the amount of data writing required to emulate RAM. Plus RAM operates on a bus directly with the processor, hence why it's directly assignable in assembly, which absolutely is not the case with SD cards which have to deal with a file system and interfacing hardware. Honestly extending RAM onto an SD card would make your phone run infinitely SLOWER.
Maybe there are other parts of this "Hack" that work but the idea that you can use and SD card as RAM is simply garbage.
ok cool I don't want do it then. u know that opera mobile that monte linked is great. no memory errors. It just doesn't work too good in landscape or with a hardware keyboard.
Ok so I installed the cab but I don't see any change. I still have 12 to 14MB running Manila 2D. ideas? I have 300MB or space left onmy SD Card
As I said in my first reply, this will NOT give you extra memory. Depending on the speed of your SD card, it may increase the performance on some programs, but there is no way to give the phone more ram with any registry changes. You would have to write a very low level driver that would then cause it to see additional storage as available memory, but since it's not ram, it will be extremely slow. On the original PPC's, 2003 and earlier, it had no rom, just ram, and it balanced the storage and available ram with software so that you could adjust. With the newer versions of windows mobile there is ROM and RAM, each with it's own function. So unless you were involved in the original development of the OS, it's doubtful you would have the knowledge to be able to write this kind of driver, and therefore it will probably never happen.
So this is a hack worth testing, and if you have a very fast memory card, you may see some improvements, but it will not give additional ram, and could actually cause your phone to crash if you remove the memory cards because background processes will be utilizing the memory card.
My suggestion is to not even bother with this unless you just want to test with it.
Moving the volatile storage from FASTER internal rom to SLOWER external rom is not going to get you any additional RAM, and at best will simply slow things down.
Placebo caused by the soft reset that you must do.
regarding the statements about the tweaks or cab file that the other guy provided causing you to lose ram. That is correct and thats what speeds up your system. Increasing those values allocates free ram for those specific areas speeding up the filesystem and speed of the device. So technically you didnt lose any ram its just being used for other parts of the devise to speed it up
I saw no improvement... could just be me. And my audio manager would just skip through all songs with this reg edit applied. When i put it back the way it was audio manager played all songs fine.
Wow.
Wow. I manually did the reg-edits just now and I'm not on crack. Manila 2D is considerably smoother, Skyfire loads much faster and I was able to open up multiple other progams without any lag. This is ridiculous! Nice find!
My phone ran much slower with the update, I did it just for sh*t and giggles, and was right, no additional memory, and apparently my 8gb sd card is slower than the onboard rom because it ran probably 15% slower.

storage card turning off on high loads

hi guys..
since i flashed my HD, the storage card is behaving strange.
whenever it reads alot of files it turns off and i have to remove the card and put it back in too be recognized.
2 examples: i have about 500 wallpapers on it and when i use resco photo manager to view them, the card disapears,. and also when i try to start up IGO ( the first time, when it reads alot)
My rom is energyROM Leo 23529 maxmanilla
the wallpapers are showing now but i cant start my igo, witch is one of the most important part of the phone for me
Can someone tell me what the problem is, the ROM ,the card, or my phone is ruined again and i have to send it back?
thx

HD2 randomly formatted memory card ?!

i am relatively new to win mo and got a htc hd 2 just little over 1 month or two back.. (ROM 1.48, Radio 2.05, manila 2.5, OS 5.2) now i was surfing the net on opera mini 9.7 (wifi, had activated the n band using BsB tweaks) and i got a email.. so i i thn just pressed the home button and went to mail on htc sense.. now as soon as i click reply the whole device just shut down and i had to manually switch it on.. everything was alrite accept when i went to the music tab on htc snese it said the music titles no longer exist... So i opened the file explorer and went to storage card it was just completely blank.. i was using a san disk 8GB (class 6 )... and i mean completely blank.. i had about 109 music tracks, contacts, 6 project files (which i had failed to back up ), and about 15 movie and tv show files... i just got damn pissed at this thing ... just wanted to know did i overload it or summin ? .. and is this common with the win mo or the hd 2 ?.. i tried searching this and 2 other forums dint find anything similar to this ?
is there any possible way i can recover any files :S.. as those 6 project files were really important was about to take a back up of it but

Never had that problem here or heard of it whilst surfing here, that must have really gutted ya.
Sometimes WinMo device could lose its "link" with its momory card (can't load up folders/files or missing some of them) with unknown causes but your card is in fact still intact. Simplly soft reset and the device should "recognise" the card properly again.
Never heard that files inside a memory card being wiped out completely/formatted randomly. It did happen to me b4 that my Touch Cruise corrupted all files in my memory card (replacing them with strange file names) but have never heard about that in an HD2 so far.
