Language being used for applications

I've been developing enterprise applications for over a decade now, but PPC Development is totally new for me. I'm curious to know what language most PPC developers use to build their applications? Is it common to develop using Mobile .NET or are most of the applications developed in C++?
I really want to get involved, as there are applications I would like to write, but I'm struggling to find a starting point.
I want to develop a finger friendly application like the SPB Mobile Shell, and I assume I will have to use C++ and animations to ge the desired functionality? Any help is greatly appreciated.
The simplest way to start is using the .NET platform.
Its main languages are Visual C# and Visual Basic.
The main advantage is that those two languages are simple (the C# is close to the Java language) and secure in terms of memory management, but they also are slow, because the compiler creates managed code, just like the java compiler does.
I've tried to do some small apps using C#, and it's really entertaining and "simple". The problem is that you need the Microsoft Visual Studio IDE, which is not free, unless you use a free version, the Visual Studio Express IDE, but I'm not quite sure that it works to dev on a PPC.
As far as I know, there is a way to do unmanaged code, using C++ I guess, which is much faster. I don't know how to program in C++ for a PPC, and I'm also interested, as the few apps that I made in C# were really slow.
Good luck !

I'm guessing that applications like SPB Mobile Shell is developed in C++. I just don't see how it could be .NET code. I was sort of hoping, considering this is a developers forum, that there would be a better response to this thread; however the overwhelming feeling I get is that the 'new' people aren't cool enough to share information with.

I feel your pain but best suggestion I can give to you is there is icontact app for which author have released source code (Thank you very much for that) . Look at the code and try to understand and see where you can get with it.
I started using visual studio IDE but I was running in to issue with the IDE itself, good luck to you.

planetsourcecode type site for Windows Mobile

Is there anything, besides codeproject, that has a repository for source code for windows mobile 5/6/6.1? I am looking for something similar to planetsourcecode.com/.net so I can learn from sourcecode.
Also, is there any development tool I can use to program today plugins besides Visual studio? I know of basic4ppc. But anything else? Anything similar to appforge out there?
Try embedded Visual C++/Basic from the MS Websites. (it's free)
...or ic#code if you intend to write managed code. Hey moderators what about a new forum here in XDA for open source code / class libraries / etc for windows mobile and HTC devices?

I recently went through this when making Manilla2D Customizer.
I found a lot of very useful information at the pocket pc developers network http://www.pocketpcdn.com/
Code project also has quite a few decent articles
When you get truly stuck with a problem the community over at stackoverflow.com will usually have an answer for you
Feel free to download the source for M2DC at http://code.google.com/p/manilla2dcustomizer/downloads/detail?name=M2DC_v0.11.133-src.zip&can=1&q=
As far as development tools... I was unable to find anything I was happy with other than Visual Studio. Microsoft has a 90 day trial of Visual Studio 2008 Professional for free download... and that is what I have been using for M2DC, it has worked well for me, but I know in 2 months I need to buy the full version (nearly $700 ) or convince my employer or contracting employer to buy it for me ( )
good luck
I have a similar issue. I can code command line, I am just bad at picking the "correct" compiler, worse at setting it up and I don't really care for Visual coding and IDEs (am perfectly happy with Notepad or Nano).
I was surprised that there is no sticky on these forums, not even in the roll-up, that discusses "recommended" tools (or available combinations) for writing mobile applications.
The only one I am aware of is Visual Studio et al described on MS' site here -
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-gb/windowsmobile/bb264337.aspx
Now, obviously, I don't really like spending money, especially if I can do it for free (and legally, obviously), so I was pleasently surprised when I found that MS gives their tools away to students -
https://downloads.channel8.msdn.com/Products.aspx
So this gets Visual Studio (I elected for 2005 rather than 2008) and the rest of the tools as a developer environment. I just installed all of this and it seems to be working ok with minimum fuss, so I shall be bastardising some MS sample project in the near future to create a template program and then I should be away....
Beyond that, there's the option of embedded visual c++ 4 (download and service pack 4). Only problem was getting this to compile properly (as I said, I have problems with getting compilers to work. They a nemesis of mine, along with printers).
If there are other options (like ic#code, gcc etc...) that are also easy to set up, but not attached to Microsoft, I would love to be told about them especially if there is a walk-through about how to put the pieces in the right place or an IRC channel I can ask silly questions in (like what .
If you don't require C++, check out PellesC.
It's very straightforward to get it up and going, it's using lcc modified compiler.

Compiler available for windows Mobile App development

Dear Hackers and others
Suggestions on the Compilers / IDEs / Environment that are suggested for application to be build making them compatablw with maximum devices.
Example:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mobile_development
Please add other you would use not listed on above page.
you have no other choice than MS Visual Studio + their SDK if you want to target windows mobile. Also.. it must be VS Professional edition because only this one has smart device development support.
I'm using MS Visual Studio 2008 Professional.
You do not need VisualStudio. See here: http://www.codeproject.com/KB/mobile/WiMoSansVS.aspx

Where to find support for WinMo 6.5 development using vb.net 2008

Hi all,
Anyone know of a forum where I can learn how to develop apps for personal use
for my HD2 using vb.net and Visual Studio Pro 2008?
As far as I understand my HD2 won't run windows phone 7.
And only windows mobile 6.5 and before etc.
I'm hoping to find more than the beginners guide to "Hello World".
VS2008Pro is a bit flaky and crashes when I run the app from the development environment and then attempt to move a control in the development environment.
And I can't find how to force my personal app into landscape only. etc.
I've been looking thru all kinds of sites and searches and code for the last couple of weeks. So I know pretty much what I want and can't find.
I've spent a day or two on C#.net(?) code trying to convert some to vb.net
Just torture.
Even some vb.net code examples won't run and I think some well intended C .net developers are forcing VB.net to do c .net coding.
Which is hard enough as it is.
I'd sincerely appreciate any positive constructive suggestions.
Keeping my fingers crossed trying to find like minded vb.net 2008 pro developers.
Thanks and all my best to everyone.

[Q] Making an App

Hey all.
I did some searching and came out empty.
I want to make my own .cab app. I know C and C++
What SDK do I need? Do they offer GUI SDK or just CLI SDK?
Thank you.
You'll need the Windows Mobile SDK, which is easily available via a google search. The standard Windows GUI is then available in whatever version of .Net you're using to develop with.
Obviously I don't know what kind of development you've done before now, so I don't know if you've done any .Net development or have any experience with OO programming. It may be simple enough for you to move to C#, and if you can then I'd recommend that.
There's also a couple of presentation GUIs available in the Windows software development forum (not in the phone specific areas of the forums). Here's one I've used before and found it to be very nice...

Good luck mate.
