check the "development and hacking section" to see what people have made and are currently making, otherwise, what kind of software are you looking for?

What about a beginner's guide/development tools sticky/wiki?

Hi,
I am trying to get the ball rolling on PPC development, and I am looking for information on how to do it.
I believe xda-developers could have more detailed data on how to get started on development, useful tools etc, and this data could be presented on the wiki and have a sticky link here at the forums, so that the information can be maintained with ease by us.
For now, I have added this:
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Development Tools
Which has only a little amount of information, about the standard tools. Naturally, it will be better if we can find a way to substitute Visual Studio with a free tool...
If other people have more information to share, please contribute.
Hi Joe!
I think this is a great idea, as posts about this stuff keep popping up every now and then.
I took the liberty to add info about some free tools from MS to your wiki page, but this is my first time with the wiki so if I did it in some improper way, feel free to edit it.

You don't need any development information here at xda-developers because all the information is given in Standard Developoment Kit's (SDK) Documentation. Just download the latest "PocketPC SDK" from ms and be happy!
ps: you owe me your call blocker

Softwares for Windows Mobile

I would like to have following softwares on my windows mobile 5 phone (imate SP5). I don't know if any freeware software exists or not but if they don't i may give a try developing few of them.
DISCLAIMER: If you think some of these are already present in WM5 or don't make sense, don't laugh, just let me know. I am a newbie for windows mobile.
1. A basic notepad.
2. A feature/hook which would enable copy/paste operation in every textbox. 2a. A feature that would allow to paste frequently used text/phrases in every textbox.
3. Word, Excel like application with view/edit facility (of course, cannot develop this one
4. Software to explore files on my PC from my mobile. Ability to setup networking share over a bluetooth/WiFi connection between a PC/mobile and a mobile/mobile would be good. Ability to copy/paste the files.
4a. RDP from PC to Mobile and vice versa.
5. Chat over Bluetooth/WiFi between PC/mobile and mobile/mobile.
6. Video/Audio streaming between PC/mobile and mobile/mobile over Bluetooth/WiFi. Ability to use mobile as a web cam/mic.
7. A good todo list manager with reminders etc. (I don't know why but the Tasks application inbuilt in my mobile is totaly featureless. I can enter a new task but cannot set its priority, reminder, start/end dates, etc.) Synchornization with Outlook.
8. Tabbed IE Browser.
9. A wallet type application to store personal data.
10. Following app: Based on specific tower id (mobile network tower), changes the profile of the mobile from normal to silent and vice/versa.
11. Software similar to command prompt or Run Command in windows.
12. Call recorder.
13. A better task manager.
14. Expense manager.
15. Stopwatch.
16. Better calculator than provided by default in WM5.
17. Registry Editor.
18. RSS Reader.
19. Use mobile as a remote control for TV (over infrared)
for PC (like playing stopping songs on PC) over bluetooth/WiFi.
20. Bike/Car Odometer recorder.
If applications exist, well and good. If they don't, as already stated, I might give them a try. However, I would like to have pointers on how to develop. I know .net but am poor in native code.
Anybody out there with a reply to any of the above items???

please ask google first for those questions. and I'm sure if you had, you had seen this wonderful site:
www.pocketpcfreewares.com
I did google. That's the first thing anybody would do. But could not find much.
And the site link you have sent is in a non-english language. Is there english version?

there are two flags....one French and on English...if you press the English flag the French site, magically, turns into an English site and vice versa... Man,you are too lazy....don't ask others to find what you want.... Also if you have searched google,as you say,you would have found, that if you type for example "notepad wm5 ppc",a nice notepad would appear on top of the list "Pocket Notepad"...
Thanks man.... I did look there for such thing... just didn't notice...
Most of the apps you requested do exist.
I am not going to do the search for you but here are a few hints:
1) SoftMaker has very powerful Word and Excel replacements and I remember them releasing a smartphone version a while back.
2) Total commander is free and works great on PPC should work fine on SP as well for file browsing locally and over WiFi.
3) Pocket Controller for RDP from PC to SP and try LogmeIn for SP to PC.
4) Minimo is slow but practically the most powerfully browser for Win Mo. and it has tabs. (Also free)
5) PHM is a free reg editor.
And there are plenty of other apps.
He who seeks shell find!
Sorry to say this but a Windows Mobile phone might be too advanced for you if you can't figure out search engines.
***MOD EDIT***
LINK TO WAREZ SITE REMOVED... while alot of us probably use that site, xda does not condone links to warez.

aside from the fact that this site discourages warez, (I'm sure many may use it). The site is offline atm

But I'm serious. Also why sign up for a more advance PPC forum like this and ask a question in the Development and Hacking forum?
Description of Development and Hacking forum:
Everything to do with software development for the phones. Please refrain from posting unless you're a software developer or hardcore techie. Postings from others will be moved.

Instead of making this post he should have spent some time in the SP5 forum (http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=285) and read before asking questions.

I know, and I agree. I just found the way you said so amusing - I had to reply I really did lol
Thanks to all of you but I found the post by levenum the most useful. I can google but was looking for some pointers like he gave. and yes SP5 forum would have been a better place to ask this.

I can't believe I did the work to help a fellow member honestly thinking that it was going to be somehow related to development of some PocketPC software, create the working code in PHP and even tested it on my local server. And then see that you made only 2 posts and check out your signature to see that you are probably going to just throw it up my code on your super spammy ad-sense page. (spammy + in bad need of a spell checker...double whammy)
If you intended on using my code in some way related to PPCs or helping this community, let me know and I might change my mind. Otherwise use Google yourself like you suggested in your 1 other oh so valuable post to this community.

AOL Instant Messenger (AIM) on WM5

I've spent hours searching for the supposedly hacked version of AIM 2.0 for Windows CE 2003 that allows people on Windows Mobile 5 to use it. The problem with the standard AIM 2.0 available from AOL in the USA is that it has a menu on the bottom of the screen, and this causes havok in WM5 and WM6. I knew I had this "hacked" UK version of AIM 2.0 CE in the past, and had gotten it from this forum, but no google searching or forum searching could turn it up. After lots of manual post reading I've found the relevant post that contains it, so I'm making this post to save the rest of the world some time (should any strange individuals like myself seek to use the official AIM client on WM5+). I know a policy of this forum is to post links to prior threads rather than starting new threads but I feel there is no thread that concerns this topic. There is a thread about keeping GPRS connected in WM5, and one user of that thread suggests using Pocket AIM for this purpose and provides an attached copy of the "hacked" version of it (which seems to astonish people posting in that thread because AIM isn't supposed to work on WM5). So, here it is and please do not remove this post, since it will enable google surfers and forum searchers to find this rare file without wasting their time (not that browsing this forum all day is ever a waste of time).

If this was or is an official version, I'd like someone to add it to the WM5 compatibility list. Maybe I'll post a link in there as well.
Note: I've tried imov messenger and tons of others, but I choose this client for AIM because of unexplainable personal preference, so please don't post a million replies about how silly I am not to use whatever client you prefer.
UPDATE: After buying a new phone and lots of time going by, I went to this post to get AIM and the download link wasn't functional. A different link to the same file can be found in this post: http://pdaphonehome.com/forums/588878-post36.html on a different forum. Maybe I'll post it in here when I get around to it. Any mirrors are welcomed.
very very nice post, I've sent this to about 20 people.

Java or Windows Mobile? (Remote Control Application)

Hello,
What i want is to develop an application for my Asus A696 PDA, for controlling my home cinema through IrDA. I have a few devices like Dreambox DM800, WDTV, Loewe A42 and also a Samsung HT TZ225.
I am new to the mobile development scene and obviously i am trying to find my way around. For a start, what should i use to develop my application? Java or Windows Mobile development IDE?
I wouldn't mind if you posted some good tutorials too
Thank you
Anybody anything?
Search the forums, there are plenty of answers already.
Look at the Wiki. There is a whole page with all sorts of information on programming.
I also have some information on my web page.
on my dreambox for some reason the user or password has been changed from default and i cant figure it out.
