Data Connection only through UMTS - Windows Mobile Development and Hacking General

Hi,
I would like my Universal to open a Data Connection ONLY when there is an UMTS signal, and never if I am in roaming or not in UMTS. This because my "provider" (3 Italy) has only UMTS antennas and when its signal is not available it goes automatically in roaming but when I am in roaming I have to pay for traffic.
I tried to change the phone settings (Band->Network type) to WCDMA only, but in this way I cannot use roaming at all even for calling, but if I set Network type to Auto, I can use roaming but I will pay lots of money because I use Email Push that goes always on line.
Thanks!!

Disallow GPRS Connections, but not UMTS

Hey all,
is there anyway of stopping wm6 from connecting to gprs other than deleting the connection?
while i'm under 3g umts coverage, i would like it to be connected as the data is free... but when out of coverage or when my hermes decides its only going to join the roaming network (where i only get gprs), i get charged data.
any ideas guys? couldn't find much in the search. must be searching for the wrong thing or there doesn't seem to be a definate answer. ie, will allow umts, but not gprs etc. most seem to disable data all together.
anyone with Three in australia will know that Telstra charge a lot for using roaming when not in 3g coverage. there must be someone out there with the same dilemma?
Cheers,
Bill
can you just force 3g band only in phone setting?
possibly. at the moment everything is set to auto. so it defaults back to gsm (telstra network) when umts is unavailable. i just dunno what setting to pick for Three's umts. even then there is only one option for UMTS only. umts(2100+850) otherwise they are paired with gsm.
Any thoughts?

Turning of Roaming completely

Not sure if this is the correct forum but I want to be able to turn of roaming completely. I have a US G1 on the three UK network with the US RC33 installed and root. I have disabled data roaming. Here in the UK we're too small a country to want to roam! Coverage is usually good enough from a single network. However, I occasionally get the little 'R' symbol on the single strength icon and an annoying prompt saying I need to turn data roaming on because I lost connectivity. I have to go into the settings and manually select the "3" network again.
What I want is to either be connected to three UK or not connected to anything at all. Is there a config file I can edit to allow this? Would the UK RC8 firmware do this for me?
Thanks in advance for any help.
Doesn't a 3-UK SIM try to roam onto O2 though?
You could set the phone WCDMA only and NOT roam onto a GSM network.
Use AnyCut to shorcut Activity: Phone Info
From there under preferred Network Type; set to "WCDMA Only"
HELP!! Roaming signal won't go away
I have an unlocked G1, JF1.41 v 1.1 and i just updated to the RC33...but this also happened when i had RC30 , v 1.0...
I put in my canadian Fido sim card and everything works fine but i have that little "R" on top of my signal strength bar...
I think this means its data roaming? if this is the case...it should be okay (even though its going to bother me) because my service provider says my EDGE/Data is disabled (i do not have a data plan, NOR do i wish to incur any data charges.. i'm fine with my free WIFI ) .
However, if this means im roaming on another network, i dont want to be incuring any long distance charges on my phone EVEN when im using my own FIDO network..
I went to settings - about phone - status, and here are my specs (some of them):
Network: Fido
Network Type: EDGE
Service state: In service
Roaming: Roaming
Data Access: Disconnected
i'm pretty much just concerned about the ROAMING part of it... my other friends with G1's are with rogers, don't have that little R..
how do i get rid of that?? please and thanks!
Try manually changing the network in Settings>Wireless controls>Mobile networks>Operator selection
G1, like all GSM phones, will roam onto networks specified on the SIM if it can get a better signal. As long as the relevant operator has a roaming agreement in place, there's nothing to be concerned about, other than the R symbol in the status bar.
Mod: move this over to General discussion please.
I did change it and selected my Fido network (it's the only network available).
Thanks. I've set it to WCDMA only so I'll see how it goes.
Please help??? i still have that little R on top!
After I got home I found my phone had lost its connection. It didn't seem to be searching for the network. I had to go into settings, search for networks and then select three again. Is there any way to control if the phone does a search for networks automatically?
Looks like it reconnects to three on its own after a while. I still get the annoying popup about turning on data roaming though

Click to collapse
As has been previously mentioned, Three will "roam" onto another network if it goes out of Three's own 3G network coverage because Three does not run its own 2G network.
However, it isn't O2 anymore, it is Orange as of late 2006/2007. I *believe* that you won't be charged any more if you use data whilst "roaming" on Orange, so whilst you are in the UK it is quite safe to allow data roaming, but I would be inclined to check this with Three.

htc band settings on 3 network!?

Hi.
I have an HTC Touch HD on the UK 3 Network.
It works fine with texts and calls n 3g but whenever I need data for an app etc it ignores a great 3g signal and tries to connect on HSDPA instead.
now this might not seem like a problem but it often switches from full 3G bars to one bar on HSDPA to check my email. this can take 5 to 10 seconds when it could have just done it on 3G.
what gives? am i using the right settings?
start/settings/phone/band
Network Type "Auto"
GSM/UMTS band "Auto"
when i was on Vodafone it would stay on the best choice ie HSDPA instead of all this swapping about.
I hope this is the right place to ask. not a major problem just a frustration.
thanks
don
In common with many (all?) of the five networks, 3UK has recently switched their handsets from staying on HDSPA to "only" 3g, but automatically changing to HSDPA when data traffic occurs.
HSDPA demands extra bandwidth to the cell. There might be a second or so delay while the handset re-negotiates the extra protocol, but it's done to give extra capacity on the cell, allowing more space for 3G voice calls, while ensuting your data speeds aren't affected by push-email or similar low-bandwidth devices using an always-on HSDPA protocol.
In short, it's completly normal and pretty standard nowadays. Keep your phone on Auto/3G, you can't force it to HSDPA only.

Fixed. National roaming not working. Norway

Edit: writing it down helped me understand that i actually never activated "2g or 3g or 4g" in elixir2>information>telephony>turn 4g on.
So this was how i got onecall to work properly, in case there's other Norwegians with the same problem.
___________
In areas where my provider doesn't have reception it uses another provider. My phone then shows that it's roaming and that it has data connection, but in reality it doesn't, i can't access the net. Roaming is activated, the apn of my provider is setup correctly. My provider uses 2g and 3g, the other provider uses 4g as well. When the issue appears it doesn't help to turn on and off airplane mode, doesn't help to turn off and on obile data or to reboot the phone. The problem appears no matter if I choose the other providers network manually or let the phone do it automatically. I tried every possible setting in elixir2 regarding "preferred connection speed - 2g only, 3g onlyn 2g or 3g or 4g and so on.
Anyone with a similar issue on this or a different phone and a possible solution?
