wireless connection - no validation - 8525, TyTN, MDA Vario II, JasJam General

Dear. Community,
i am still rather new to this forum, but i am already surprised by the huge activity here.
Ive just recently aquired myself a HTC TyTN PRO (Hermes200)
Shortly after Flashing it to Schap's 3,54b thanks for this superb ROM and software.
Now i am trying to connect to my schools wireless network, apparently they have some funny network settings, with options that i am unable to locate on my hermes. the options necessary to connect are as follows:
WPA(WPA-ENT with vista) (key autoshare)
TKIP
PEAP
now here comes the funny part.
Going to settings on a windows PC you have set "Validate servercertificate" to off
and make sure its set on "(EAP-MSCHAP V2)"
choosing settings next to this option you have to switch off the automatic logon and password using windows...
^^^
now the problem is i can't finde anything regarding the Server certificate nither the (EAP-MSCHAP V2)..
where would i be able to set this option?
Thanks in advance

LEAP authentication

Hi,
I would just like to know whether anyone has successfully accessed their corporate LAN using LEAP authentication?
Mine just can't work, no matter what I tried. I am able to access normal hotspots and my home LAN with normal WEP secruity.
Nobody using LEAP at the moment?
I've not got LEAP running on any of my wireless networks, either home or work, however, you may struggle to get it working, given that LEAP is cisco-propriatary and as such, not very many wireless drivers support it. My old Axim x50v had a plugin that supported leap, but I've seen no evidence of this on the Ameo. There may be a commerical plugin available for WM5, but I'm not sure.?
Personally, if you have a choice, Id avoid LEAP following all the flaws found with it, but I guess sometimes we have to live with what we're given.
Yes, I am living with what I am given, because my company is using LEAP for its wireless network authentication.
I'm not sure whether it is the access router that is giving me problems, or WM5 implementation of LEAP was somehow broken. My Qtek 9000 on AKU 2.x was able to log into the network but not the U1000, which I believe has AKU 3.x
Does anyone know of any tool that I can use to help me debug the problem? Like some kind of a trace?
Thought I'd share this in case anyone has problem using LEAP to log into their corporate wireless LAN.
I couldn't accept that my Qtek 9000 can log onto my corporate's wireless but the U1000 can't. Until it struck me that I should do a comparision of the registry between these two. So I fired up my registry explorer and search for "leap" and sure enough there was a difference!
In the U1000, there is this additonal entry "HKLM\\Comm\TIACXWLN1\Parms\HTCPreloadLEAP" that was not present in the Qtek 9000. I noticed this key was set to value 0. Naturally I amended it to value 1, soft reset and tried to log-on. You can imagine my delight afterwards
So now my U1000 is almost the complete PDA solution I have been looking for, barring that PI2005 issue.
As a reminder, if you want to try this fix, do remember to back up your registry first.
Hi chrisoyh, I am sooooo grateful that you enlightened me on this one. Was trying to connect to my corporate LEAP network since I got my phone. Thank you! then I tested this "fix" and could not find anything new in the WiFi. In the original HTC ROM I had there was a LEAP setting that never worked. Now in the WM6 ROM I am using there is no LEAP tab. anyone?
OK - I managed to enable the LEAP tab. Now I'm wondering if you could help me with this. In HKLM\\Comm\EAP\Extension I have keys 13 (EAP-TLS - Smart Card or Certificate) 25 (PEAP) and 26 (EAP CHAP - MSV2 Challenge). I believe that there should be a LEAP key here. Can you possibly have a look and tell me if you have one what are the settings - please? Thanks very much.
Hi nealed,
Sorry but nope. There is no LEAP key under HKLM\Comm\EAP\Extension on my U1000 as well.
What are the settings you set for your WEP key under your wireless profile? Is it "Shared" or "Open"?
Hi chrisoyh,
WiFi Settings: Authentication: Open, Data encryption: WEP, The Key is provided automatically, Then I click Next and on Configure Network Authentication I tick Use IEEE 802.1x network access control - but do not have LEAP in EAP in the drop down box.
Wireless LAN settings : SSID: (the ssid I connect to) - User Name: my domain user name Password: my password Domain fqdn of the domain. authentication Type: Open System.
Just a question - should I be creating the connection in WiFi after setting up the Wireless LAN?
Do you have a LEAP dll anywhere on your machine? Other LEAP registry entries? I'm guessing there must be something missing!
Your Wireless LAN settings is similiar to mine.
As for the WiFi Settings: try using Shared instead of Open authentication. And select PEAP for the "Use IEEE 802.1x network access control".
Let's see whether this helps.
PEAP is Protected Extensible Authentication Protocol. I need to use LEAP (Lightweight) Extensible Authentication Protocol. Also, the authenticaltion is 802.1x open. The above won't work for me. I believe that there is a dll missing which will enable the selection of LEAP under EAP type drop down list. anyone?
Yes, I know the difference between LEAP and PEAP. But that is how it was exactly set up on my Dopod U1000 and old Qtek 9000, and both are able to access my corporate LAN.
There is no LEAP DLL file, trust me.
Also, the Open authentication is set in the LEAP tab under "Wireless LAN" setting. In WiFi tab, I find that using "Shared" authentication is the way to go for me to get connected.
This is not exactly related to the post but maybe you can help me. I am having stupid problems with wifi on th htc. If I use resco explorer to surf by wifi in my home network I see only works if the phone is not connected and previously I made a soft reset. Exactly what happens is I can see previous shared networks folders but If I look in the option "map network" I cannot find other computers.
The other consequence of this is I am having stupid problems with Jet printing because not ever the pda see the network.
Previously I had a jasjar and never troubles with this. I am not happy how is managed in the htc.
Dear All,
Need some help connecting my HTC Diamond to my work WiFI Network. Have tried the previous recommendations in this thread but still no joy.
I have the following:
HTC Touch Diamond P3700
Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional CE OS 5.2.20764 (Build 20764.1.4.3)
Configure Wireless Network:
Authentication: Open
Data Encryption: WEP
The key is automatically provided IS ticked
Use IEEE 802.1x network access control IS ticked
EAP type: PEAP
LEAP tab:
SSID: set to WiFI SSID
Domain: blank
User Name: Set
Password: Set
Authentication Type: Open System
I have tried Shared as previously recommended but no difference.
Please Help.

Solved: Network connection when in cradle

Not sure why it's not working, but until yesterday (when I was still using Windows 2003SE on my XDA2S) my XDA2S made a network connection as soon as I put it on the cradle. When I used IE to access a website all was working fine.
Now when I try to do this with my just new flashed WM6 setup, I can not get it to work.
My router does give IP's out (with DHCP).
I've even tested it with a fixed IP (same range as rest of LAN) and gateway in the NE2000 Compatible Ethernet Driver (start > settings > Connections > Network Cards > "NE2000 Compatible Ethernet Driver"), but also with no luck.
The main OS that I'm using is Vista, but I did not change a thing in this.
(firewall off)
Doing a sync of the PDA is no problem, and I can even see my other PC's on the LAN when I use Resco Explorer's > "My Network".
Wifi is also working fine.
When I ping the PDA from Vista by "Device name", I do get a reply back, but the IP shown is not one that should be in my LAN.
It's 169.254.2.1. My LAN is all in the 10.0.0.1 / 255 range.
Anyone here who might know what I'm doing wrong?
i got the same problem...on my wm5 i wass entering my network with wi-fi but im not very good knowing networks...so maby someone who can solf this can tell us..
regards
Same problem here!
This is no help to you but I have the same issue
On WM2003SE I only had the 192..168.0.x IP address, now on WM6 I get them both
This seems to cause conflict when I try and update RSS feeds whilst cradled, any ideas anyione
And yes I have read the Wiki to no avail ...

That is correct.
With WM5/6 and ActiveSync, the BA is given a private IP in the 169.254.2.x range, and ActiveSync acts as a bridge between the rest of the network and the phone.
Your router will not hand out an IP to the phone when it's connected to the computer via USB. WiFi is a different situation, and would get an IP from your router assuming it associates with your wireless LAN.
Look under:
settings -> connections tab -> connections control panel -> advanced tab -> select networks button
Make sure that "programs that automatically connect to the internet" has a network selected that has the 'this network connects to the internet' box checked under proxy settings.
Thank you for your reply jdc,
Unfortunately this did not work for me.
I've got under the Connections > Advanced [Select Networks] the following:
- My ISP
- My Work Network
When I hit the My ISP [Edit] button I end up on the Modem settings, and I see only my GPRS connection.
The only two tabs available at the bottom are General and Modem
When I hit the My Work Network [Edit] button I end up in the Modem tab.
Nothing is in this. Other tab's that I see are General, VPN and Proxy Settings.
In the Proxy Settings I do see the "This network connects to the internet", and I'm able to select it.
Problem is that as soon as I hit OK to close "Settings" and go back to the settings again the "This network connects to the internet" is un-selected again.
I'm about to give up on this project.. Who needs internet anyway when the PDA is in the cradle..

Yes I get a "The page you are looking for cannot be found due to unknown error 0x80072f78" error.
Googling for 0x80072f78 does show a lot of info, but till now no fix for me.
I had the same error, and i fix it with change this registry:
HKLM>Software>Microsoft>Windows CE Services
and change the AllowLSP dword to 0
Now, i'm using XP Pro, not Vista...

If so, I do not have AllowLSP in it!
This is what I have in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > Software > Microsoft > Windows CE Services.

Understood, and in Vista AllowLSP can not be found anywhere in the registry (it must be an ActiveSync 4.5 setting).
To go back to XP for only this, is a no go for me..
Thank you for your help.
From this forum:
http://www.aximsite.com/boards/activesync/137666-fix-unknown-error-0x80072f78.html
it looks like the reg patch is working on vista home premium as well.
You can try it, and revert back (delete registry entry) if isn't working.
Looks like the patch is manually adding the "needed" AllowLSP.

Yes, and now with the new WM6 and the "skin" than I'm using it does look new again.
Only problem that I'm having now (not related to this topic) is that sometimes I can not get WiFi to go on.
It does turn on, but right away off again also :/
Whatever way I try to set it to on.. No luck.. And than all of a sudden it's fine again..
Old problem since WM5, switching wi-fi on is tricky sometime. Has also happen to me on WM2003SE; probably the wi-fi driver isn't the best part from BA.
Thanks!
DANDANA - I'd have your babies if only I didn't hate children, thanks for the tip, it works perfectly!
XdaIIs - the WIFI thing is known about and somewhere on the forum there is a workaround. Sorry, I've lost the link :-(
Thanks again, I'm a happy bunny now!

WiFi and proxy

Hello,
I have HTC Touch, and I'm trying to connect to wifi with ISA proxy.
First, I connected to home wifi (no proxy) and accessed internet without problem.
At work we have Radius etc. but I also connected, and I can surf to pages inside company (no need for proxy), but I can't get out to internet.
Any suggestion would be great!
tnx
small update: looks like I was surfing at work through usb cable, not wifi. But now I can't even connect to wifi at work, which I could before. Funny things going on, I'll reset.
Update2:
Newest status is: wifi connected, can surf internal sites, but can't go outside company network.
I suspect that IE is not going through the proxy at all. Which implicates that I don't know how to setup IE to use proxy on WM6???
If you edit "My Work Settings" thru Settings -> Connections -> Connections you can edit the proxy settings there. Then you say "connect to internet" thru "My Work Settings". I may be wrong, but I think you need to reset the pda as well...
OK, here are my settings:
under settings-connections-connections, advanced - select networks:
"Programs that automatically connect to Internet should connect using:" My Work Network.
When I click Edit, under Modem, there are no entries.
Under Proxy settings, "This network connects to internet" and "this network uses a proxy.." are both checked.
"Proxy server" field is disabled.
Under Advanced:
Socks line has serverort next to it. Others are empty. Server and port are good.
I click ok on all and go to IE. Type www.google.com, it says "Locating.." and that's all. Internal web sites are opening ok.
I tried to turn it off, and back on.
Tried google, not working.
I checked all settings once again and tried then, still nothing.
This is a common problem and I have not found a solution for it myself yet.
The proxy settings are lost when you apply them, and the SOCKS server settings behaves weirdly.
Anyone knows what can be done?
i want to know how to do this too... my school is also using the same system.
still no update
no update ??
configfree from Toshiba
Dear,
I had an old E800 from toshiba where configfree is installed. With this program I can configure proxy for wifi in 10 sec and it works.
does someone know where we can find this program for other PDA. I want to try it on my Cruise.

I'm also having the same issue. Can anyone help, please?
From my experiences I can tell you: THERE IS NO WAY TO MAKE HTC AND HTTP PROXY FOR WIFI RUN. Neither with WM6.0 nor 6.1 nor a special brand nor the original firmware.
I have tried to inform HTC support, but I'm extremely pessemistic, that at least one will care. It seems to be not a WM related problem, because my WM6 ASUS doesn't have that issue.
There is a work around for browsers only: Don't use Pocket IE, use Minimo, because this browswer has it's own proxy setup. But it doesn't help you much, if you want to use other applications.
EDIT: Just to inform you, what happens, if you upgrade to WM6.1: The proxy settings are kept (HURRRAY) ---- but ignored completely It's _that_ brain damaged...

I can confirm the same "symptoms": proxy is totally being ignored on WM6.1. However, they're kept when you close the settings.

Proxy over WiFi works for me and has done with my previous HTC Wizard and now with my Kaiser. I have checked with a sniffer that I am definitely using the proxy over port 8080 (MS ISA 2006).
I have explained this before but this is how my device is setup.
ActiveSync/Windows Mobile Device Centre - Connection Settings set to 'This computer is connected to: Work Network' - Setting this to Automatic or The Internet deletes any Proxy Settings on the device when you connect it.
WiFi. My home WiFi SSID Network set to 'Connects to: Work'
Connections. 'Tasks' tab - Two settings 'My ISP' & 'My Work Network'. Advanced Tab, Select Networks. Top settings 'Programs that automatically connect to the Internet should connect using: My ISP'. Bottom settings 'Programs that automatically connect to a private network should connect using: My Work Network'. Under 'My ISP' I have the GPRS details for my carrier (Vodafone). Under 'My Work Network' I have a proxy defined with the Advanced settings configured - HTTP set to my proxy with the port 8080 and Socks set to my proxy with port 1080.
That's it and has worked for me since Windows Mobile 6.0 appeared for the Wizard. I used the same settings when I first got my Kaiser with WM 6.0 and now with WM 6.1 (more or less stock 5.2.19212) and it has worked every time.

Setting up 8525 wifi - No data plan

I got my 8525 almost 24 hours ago and I still haven't been able to connect to the internet. I have combed just about every thread on the net I could find on this subject and still haven't been able to use the wifi for even a second.
So far I've tried:
* removed media net
* removed my isp
* disabled proxy in proxy manager
* adjusted power save mode to best performance
* changed from dynamic ip's to static
* tried numerous kinds of router security (WEP, WPA, etc.)
* added DNS addresses to device
* disabled router security all together
* updated router firmware
At first all I could see on my device was the wireless network name...each time I clicked connect it just displayed "available". Eventually I managed to get it to connect to the network, but I still can't get a single web page to come through on internet explorer. Each time I punch in a website and hit enter, it just displays "Locating..." in the status bar, and eventually pops up with a message saying "This page cannot be found...".
PLEASE advise!!
* I'm running Windows XP/WM6, wireless router: Linksys WRT54G
setting->connections->connections->adavanced-select network
try setting both dropdownboxes to my network rather then
my isp or whatever yours are called
Thanks, but they're already set like that
sounds like a setting issue somewhere

good reads
you may have to clear the device to make sure that things / settings you changed or deleted which was required
dont cause issues
also as test you can see if you can get internet using activesync overbluetooth
if so you are 1 step closer to knowing where the issue is located
You may also want to try this out:
http://rapidshare.com/files/42598341/wpbear_Proxy_Folders.cab
The original link is here (kudos to wpbear for all his work) but there are a ton of links in that post. AT&T REALLY REALLY wants you to use their data plan so they include a hidden proxy. The cab above will install shortcuts to enable and disable the proxy.
You can use the search link in my sig line to search for 'hermes enable proxy', 'hermes diable proxy', 'hidden proxy', etc. if you're interested in the back story.
BTW, after you install the cab, you want to click the 'Disable Proxy' shortcut. That may have been abundantly clear to you already but just in case...
Thanks for all the help so far. I'm getting online through activesync, but not feeling any closer to the wifi working. I tried using Fitipaldi1's cab file, but it just says failed to install. Is it not the same thing as the "disable proxy" anyway? I also looked through the threads, but didn't find any solutions.
This is getting ridiculous. I paid a lot of money for this phone and I can't even get it to do what I need it to. Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
What about updating the rom? Mine is 3.62.502.3
Try this ...
I'm using Schap's 4.31 ROMs and have to do nothing special (it's a wonderful ROM). I know that in Windows Mobile 6, our 8525's should be able to access 802.11g by default, but maybe your's is disabled.
I do not have a dataplan either, but access everything via WiFi. I know for a fact that I am accessing wireless routers @ work that are configured as "G Only" devices.
A last bit of advice is that you could check your LinkSys and see if it is configured as "G only" or Mixed Mode. Maybe as a test, you might want to change it to Mixed Mode and then see if it connects. If it does connect in Mixed Mode, then you need to change your Registry settings to connect to 802.11g's.
I hope this helps!

Same issue here. This connection would be very useful, because the whole campus is covered by wifi and since I spend lots of hour there...
After installing the certificate, while attempting the connection, a further username+domain is required. That does't happen with a pc or a mac.
Some specs about the authentication:
- Auth: WPA
- Encr: TKIP
Certificate:
- Sha1 RSA @ 1024 bit
Did someone succeed in logging into similar networks?

Are you using Schaps Advanced config 3.2? If so then you need to make a couple of changes.

Sorry for the bump, but I think I have found the issue.
When I try to connect to the network and configure the access wm tells me that there is no personal certificate, but I have installed the certificate.
But I noticed that the provider certificate is an Intermediate, not a personal certificate!
So I can't configure anything, nor connect!
There is something wrong with the certificate installation, why it is located in Intermediate and not in Personal?
EDIT: I've renewed my certificate, and now it's in the personal tab, the previous one was without the personal Key, this time must be it
It's a no-go ç__ç
If I choose PEAP autentication the phone locks up and needs a soft-reset when I try to connect
I've solved it!
Now I can successfully connect to the WiFi Area!
A tutorial is on the way
Here I am, sorry for the long delay.
I solved my problem following this procedure:
Install the certificate on your device (The certificate must have the user key emended)
You must edit this registry key: HKLM\Comm\EAP\Extension\25\ValdateServerCert change it to 0
Reboot your device
Now you can create your network settings, for my network I had to set:
Network name: The network SSID
This is a Hidden network: True
Autentication: WPA
Data Encryption: TKIP
EAP Type: PEAP (Select your certificate from the list)
That's it, now it should work, or at least it's working on my network
Hi!
u have a little typo in there: its HKLM\Comm\EAP\Extension\25\ValidateServerCert ... and unfortunately this solution does only prevent WM to check for a serverside Certificate but does NOT solve the bug with the configuraton - popup:
o When coming to the page where u can change the auth method from certificates to PEAP, then the popup will nag us. No chance to get into the peap config to set MsChap V2 for example. We *can* prevent the popup by renaming the key for the certificate method HKLM\Comm\EAP\Extension\13 to HKLM\Comm\EAP\Extension\130 for example (so the popup is elimanted because then peap has the lower number and is handled first) *but* its still impossible to get into that damn config...
*That* Problem seems to be unsolved so far.. :-(
One of my employees told that he managed to get into the network by simply pressing "ok" at this popup, closing the wizard and when connecting to the network the username / password (mschap v2) Dialogue came -> and he was online. But unfortunately this was un-reproduceable
Any hints highly appreciated (for getting into a secured network by mschapv2 on user/password basis)
Yeah, I'm having the same problem as well...
I tried to follow the intructions to log on the wireless network available at the hospital I work, but these instructions are for desktop computers and notebooks and they have steps that I can't accomplish in my blackstone. The instructions are the following (for windows XP):
-add a new network with the name: wifiuel
-choose WPA2 autentication
-choose AES cryptography
-choose PEAP access, go to properties and uncheck all options. Also, at autentication method EAP-MSCHAPv2, click on configure and uncheck the option to use the logon's name and password automaticly.
There are a few more steps, but from this last one I can´t go on. When I tap on the properties buton on my blackstone, I get the following warning: "Cannot log on to the wireless network. This network requires a personal certificate to positively identify you."
I've tried to make the registry tweaks available in this post, but I still can't connect. The network manager says I´m connected but at the same time, the little locker icon is also shown in front of the network's name and I just can't access any website.
The real thing is, as licht77 said, I can get rid of the WM checks for a serverside Certificate but it does NOT solve the bug with the configuraton, as I still can't get into the peap config to set MsChap V2.
Can anybody help us?
Same on My Rhodium TP2
My University settings are:
SSID: 4csuuseonly (visible)
Security: WEP-enterprise
Encription: TKIP
cert: PEAP
than i have to put Username and Password; but i could never get to that step.
It did worked couple of time for me,
What I did was I created a LEAP in wifi settings with SSID, USERID and PassWord
then I enter the SERVER ,ID n Password Under "Enroll" tab in wifi settings
It did work few times; I don't know if that may help
We all Need a Solid Solution
Edit: I tried SecureW2 software to connect , Played with the software for two days. Did the reg hack, didn't help either.
Finally I uninstalled the secureW2, and guess what after the soft Reset, when i hit connect it did ask me Id and Pass.
And Now it connects within two seconds every time I go to school.
Couldn't really figure out How did it worked
