Pre-purchase question (Vista and others)

I'm looking at possibly getting the MDA Vario II in a few months on a web'n'walk tariff, but before I jump in I've decided to do some real indepth research;
- Does the handset support "push" e-mail?
- I have a GMail account which I use as my primary account; can I use this as a "push" mail account at all?
- Is it/will it be compatible with Windows Vista and Office 2007?
- Does it have Adobe Acrobat reader? Or is it compatible with the handset?
- Is it compatible with a TomTom 910 unit?

I've since attained that it does support push e-mail, but I don't know what to do with my GMail account, any suggestions are welcomed.
The TomTom unit is dubious, but I'm game for a laugh.

GMail doesnt support push. You can fwd gmail to a free exchange account. Please search for details.
PDF viewer is pre-installed. "adobe Acrobat" is not, but based on the former the latter isn't necessary.
It is compatible w/vista, not sure about Office 2007.

I forward GMail to a free mail2web.com Live Push Email account, works great. But keep in mind that Push email generates network traffic, so get a good data plan, or use polling settings very carefully (disable when roaming).
Friend of mine is using his Tytn with TT 910 over Bluetooth, works.
Outlook 2007 with Tytn works fine, using it since a few months, never had a problem. Just keep in mind that Outlook Mobile on your Tytn cannot read the new .docx Word format, so save in old .doc format. Office can also save directly to PDF, which you can port to your Tytn.
Think about the Tytn´s keyboard and size involved, if you dont need it, get the Trinity instead.

How much does it cost? I've had a quick look and I can't work it out. Also, does this mean that I won't be able to access my account at www.google.com/mail and it will be filtered?

The free mail2web live account is...Free! You will still be able to access your email from gmail.com.

You can set gmail up as a pop account. It doesn't "Push" but you can have the phone automatically check the account periodically.
It is compatible with Vista. Vista even has a nice little new program that replaces ActiveSync that works pretty well. It's still in beta, and thus has a few quirks, but works pretty well.
Yes it supports push email. I have mine coming through an exchange server.
It has a PDF reader built-in, but I prefer the mobile version of Foxit pdf reader.
No idea about the TomTom though.

As others stated, it does support push email. mail2web is a good free exchange service. Another one is 4smartphone (not free).
To get push email to work with gmail (or any other email).
1. Sign up with mail2web or any other exchange host. i-mate provides this for free for their users after you sign up at their site.
2. Set up the sync settings on the device. Things to watch out here:
* You cannot set up an external exchange service on the device when it is plugged into the PC with ActiveSync running (the menu is disabled on the device). You must disconnect it from the USB and then add a new server resource.
3. Forward your email to your mail2web (or other exchange) account. In gmail there are two ways to do this. Either you forward all mail to mail2web, or you setup a filter so that only certain mail is forwarded. I prefer the filter method because I do not want to have mailing list emails forwarded to my device. To setup my filter, I just put my gmail address in the To: box, and then had the action set to forward it to my mail2web. This way, only messages directed to me will be forwarded, not those going to the mailing list address.
Mail appears in both places: in your gmail inbox and on the phone. If you delete from the phone, it only removes it from your exchange account and not from your gmail inbox.
4. For all other accounts, you can set them up separately in the device and have it poll the servers every 5 or 10 minutes. I use this for our corporate IMAP server.
5. Your push email shows up in your Outlook E-mail folder in messaging.
I have used it with Outlook 2007 without incident. There is a new ActiveSync beta out which helps.
I'm not sure about TomTom -- but any bluetooth receiver will work. I have used Navigon5 and I can confirm it works.

When I worked for o2, we released them through www.my-xda.com and that was a dream to install and action.
One final question, is it possible that future Hermes ROMs may use Crossbow?

Thanks for the info fyrestrtr. It sounds like if you use a service like mail2web, you can view your mail on your phone using push and still use your Gmail account but that any messages you view over your phone won't get marked as read in your Gmail account until you view them there as well. Is this correct?

Very unlikely to ever see an official upgrade from HTC, HTC has their mind set on 2007 models, not the old Hermes. Even ROM updates will address just the most pressing issues, dont expect miracles these days
Yes Mail2Web works as you assume. Just carefull with Push polling traffic, can amount to up to 15 megs per month just for polling. If you ride on a low volume data plan, you might get burned....

I tried to find this on google, but no results turned back for windows mobile 5.
I awnted to know if i can install an add-on or program to support html email. let me know. thanks

As far as I know HTML email is only supported under WM6 and Exchange 07.

I use gmail and there used to my a link for html email but then they look it away. I copied the entire url for the html version and I favorite'd that one. If you try to do it otherwise it will redirect you to the gmail pda version, but using the direct (huge) link it will render in html.

All good and well but in my built in email client wm6 i cannot download headers when i could always do in the past. when i try to download email to my phone it just says receiving 1 of x emails then never shows the header. has anybody else had this problem?

I have no problems with it, make sure in your settings that either Download Headers only is selected, me personally I have it set to receive the whole email file.....Just wish there is a way to have it bring in all images at the same time, without having to manually download them on next sync.

HTML E-Mail is supported under WM6 by Pocket Outlook and it does not require Exchange 2007. I'm running WM6 Most Beautiful Edition and I have HTML E-Mail on my IMAP4 non-exchange account.
You can get HTML E-Mail on WM5 with third party apps like Flex Mail 2007, but my experience with that program was it was far too buggy to replace Pocket Outlook for me. IMHO your best bet to get good HTML E-Mail is to flash up to WM6.

Online Sync Server

Does anyone know the name of any server software that works the same as MS Exchange.
I don't need Push email, all I NEED is the contact, calendar sync. email is optional but preferable. Sort of like ZYB but with email.
I don't mind if it runs or windows or linux as long as it just works.
edit: sorry, just realized this was posted in the wrong forum.

try mail2web.com that is essentially FREE exchange server online, will do all, including mail aggrigation, ie it'll collect mail from other email accounts aswell.

I signed up for that but the support over there told me there was no way to upload/import my contacts to my address book on their server. My contacts wouldn't sync automatically either so I closed my account over there.

You do have all your contact currently on your PDA isnt it? therefore by the first sync all your contact should be copied to server. sorry If I dont understand your problem.

The contacts didn't sync though and when I spoke to support they made it seem like the contacts aren't supposed to sync.
What am I doing wrong??

Ok, found a way to upload the contacts but theres a 100 contacts limit and I've got more than 100.
So solution still pending...

i have my account and i managed to enable an email filter from to provider acror to mail2web. also i let outlook2k7 to leave the messages on the pop3 server. so i could download all my mails onto my pc and onto my mail2web account.
i added the exchange server to my activesync on my htc prophet and it synced over air very fine. i get new mails onto my pc and onto my mail2web account.
but sadly it looks like this exchange server doesn't support html mails
i just get only normal text mail over the exchange server. did i something wrong, or does their exchange servers not support this WM6 feature?

to sort of solve my own problem.. Kerio Mailserver does everything exchange does.. just requires a small proggie installed with outlook

mail2web servers dont support PUSH HTML....just text... and kiero doesnt support HTML either...

Mail2Web configure PDA
I read an article today about Mail2Web and wanted to try it before I recommend it for any of our users. The article said there was a configuration file/program - have anyone of you seen this file - or know how I configure a PDA towards Mail2Web ?

Thanks dude this one is cool but this one is also not free service. even mail2web has closed free service. I am planning to host Funambol to serve free sync service.

HTC Mail HTML yes/no?

Hi, I keep getting mails telling me "I can not receive HTML"
is this true?
Does the Desire have no HTML mail capabilities?
It looks so cool on my Palm Pre, why cant I have it on the Desire ?

HTML works fine. Make sure you have not selected "download text" only under the sync settings.
I assume you have also selected HTML format on your email server

ok, i found the "text only", it comes with the 1kb and 5kb mail size limit settings
But why does the mail not auto-size everything full screen (vert/horz) to include the complete mail ?

it (rendering) works fine on my palm pre (320x480) and by pinching and clicking one can zoom in/out.
in case of the desire the mail autosizes fine horizontally in landscape mode but not in portrait mode.

So if you have a 2003 or older exchange server then HTML no worky.

I wonder why it's not working. Before I used the exact same exchange account on my iPhone 3Gs and HTML was no problem at all. The server is running 2003. Now I'm just not able to change the mode from text-only to full HTML... Seems more like a softwareproblem or limitation which we should be able to work arround some how...

The iPhone Exchange solution doesn't use ActiveSync does it? It's more of a workaround using the OWA connection if I remember correctly?
So it's possible that HTML mail is available even with Exchange Server 2003 if you're using an iPhone, but it certainly isn't if you're using an ActiveSync connection.
Might be wrong though, I've never even held an iPhone...

Not 100% TBH but I think Apple licensed EAS.
So they should be using Exchange Activesync.

iPhone, Android and Windows Mobile
I have used the iPhone 3GS, Touch Diamond (WM6.1) and HTC Desire (Android 2.1) all with Exchange ActiveSync (from Exchange Server 2003) and Hotmail and here's what I've found.
iPhone - displays HTML beautifully from both Exchange and Hotmail and syncronises all Exchange folders with any changes on the phone being reflected elsewhere. However, it downloads Hotmail using POP3 so you can only see the Inbox and e-mails sent from the phone and any changes made on the phone are not reflected elsewhere. I believe there is an app that sorts out the Hotmail problem but I haven't tried that.
Windows Mobile - as stated in previous posts Exchange does not support HTML format in "over the air" syncronisations so all you get with Exchange is plain text if using Exchange Server 2003. Hotmail can display HTML and also allows you to sync all folders with any changes on the phone being reflected elsewhere.
HTC Mail on Desire- Handles Exchange Mail like Windows Mobile (plain text) and Hotmail like iPhone (via POP3 so only Inbox and no "proper" sync). In other words it seems to take the worst of both worlds.
What frustrates me is that the technology clearly exists to allow Exchange (using Exchnage Server 2003) to display HTML and to allow Hotmail to Sync properly. If all of these companies got together (some chance) and let the others licence their tecnology then the end user (me!) would be able to own whatever phone they wanted and have Exchange working like it does on the the iPhone and Hotmail working like it does on Windows Mobile.
Maybe one of these days!

Best Exchange ActiveSync App alternative?

Like others I've discovered HTC Mail isn't compatible with Hotmail's Exchange ActiveSync (Gmail Exchange ActiveSync works fine).
I've installed Touchdown but dislike the interface (it's also 20 bucks!) and also Improved Mail (v1.75) which also works fine but:
1. You cannot Move e-mails into another folder
2. Unlike HTC Mail it doesn't show the amount of unread e-mails on the home screen shortcut.
3. And the killer: It support HTML e-mails. How can a modern e-mail app not support HTML e-mails?
Are there any other Exchange ActiveSync e-mail apps I can use instead? Where can I download the Google Nexus One e-mail app?

looks nicer than TouchDown.. although when i tested Moxier (2.7) it didnt support HTML emails on Ex.2003 unlike Touchdown.
Moxier also appears to hold the downloaded emails on the phone memory so ran out quite quickly.. Maybe 2.8 is better now. havent tried.
for now i use TouchDown when i'm away from the office.

I've just installed v2.5 and it doesn't support HTML e-mail on Exchange ActiveSync either. I cannot find a newer version. What is it with HTML support?
It's no good, if it doesn't support HTML e-mail. Pity as otherwise it looks good.

Give Roadsync a try - works fine for me although needs some improvement to match the Symbian version...

I was reading another thread on this earlier this week on xda and this link was in it. It describes how to load the normal android email app. Its for 2.2. I don't know If this supports what you need.

Thanks guys. I've now tried:
1. Native Nexus One E-mail App
2. Improved E-Mail v1.75 (not the new v2.00 yet)
3. Touch Down
4. RoadSync
And all work perfectly fine with Hotmail's Exchange ActiveSync but none support HTML e-mail. RoadSync says it does in it's text in the market and the owner of Improved Mail says it's also supported.
So I'm thinking this is a bug with Hotmail's Exchange ActiveSync.
I've also discovered on the Improved E-Mail website (www.mwebster.us) that moving mail when using Hotmail's Exchange ActiveSync won't sync this back to the server, due to Microsoft’s implementation of Exchange ActiveSync. Great!
Thanks cjm1979. I tried that awhile ago and the same problem. Incidentally, if that really is the Native Nexus One e-mail program, it's identical to Improved E-mail. Leading me to believe, Google licensed it from the owner.
So right now, as I need HTML e-mail more than Exchange ActiveSync. I'm using the HTC Mail app with POP3 .

I've received a rather interesting reply from the owner of Improved E-Mail, regarding HTML E-mail and Moving e-mail between folders not working:
"I think the problem is that the Hotmail activesync is based on Exchange 2003 (Why I have no idea - that's 2 versions ago), and it does not send html mail to mobiles, at least to most email apps I know of - I think this may be a server side issue, but I still plan on looking at it, since I'd like to be able to receive html from other account types as well.
It *should* support marking/unmarking and deleting and having that propagate to the server. I was going to verify but I can't setup my hotmail account right now for some reason.
Also remember, hotmail doesn't 'officially' support Android yet, so maybe things will get better."

I've been using the Seven client on mine. It works with Hotmail and Exchange, with minimal configuration (less than a regular client). Not even sure if it's using Exchange ActiveSync as it has a dedicated hotmail option that works perfectly well with push mail and displays as HTML. The Exchange option asks for the webmail URL (actual URL, not just mail server) and also works perfectly well.
Hotmail option syncs contacts but doesn't offer the option to sync calendar.
Exchange option syncs all 3.
The contact search function is fairly unresponsive, as in I searched for a contact and waited ages and gave up.
The widget is very rudimentary. It takes up half the screen and shows the last 3 Exchange emails. Doesn't give me any option to choose which account it displays email for, so effectively no widget for my hotmail.
It doesn't really come close to the standard HTC mail app, other than actually working for hotmail which the HTC doesn't...

Can you get this working with Hotmail? I enter https://m.hotmail.com and it errors saying:
"An error occured. Please try again (100)."
Interestingly the Gmail option does offer Contacts + Calendar. Only Contacts for Hotmail, like you say. It's a brilliant application but has some problems:
1. There is no Shortcut option, so you have to open the App from the Home screen and then it takes another tap to go to my Gmail or Hotmail Inbox.
2. Because of this, the App shortcut doesn't display the Unread e-mail count.
3. The Sent folder for both Hotmail and Gmail is local only. It's impossible to either display, sync or even have e-mails sent in Hotmai's Sent Items or Gmail's Sent Mail folder. Odd!
4. If e-mail needs to be truncated it displays as Plain Text and if it doesn't need truncating, it displays as HTML (if relevant). I'd prefer all html e-mails displays as html regardless but to get the option to switch to html you have to scroll to the bottom of e-mails and some newsletters are really long. There is no option to set if e-mail is displayed as plain text of html as default.
5. As said, the widget is weak but I don't use the widget for e-mails, so this doesn't bother me.
6. It's Push Mail only. The HTC Desire's battery doesn't sadly allow me the luxury of Push Mail.
The last one is a deal breaker. It's a shame as the setup is so easy (for Gmail/Hotmail it's just the username/password) and the interface is really well thought out. The unified inbox works well too. The search function works fine for me, pulling in contacts from the phone, sim card, gmail (if relevant) and hotmail (if relevant).
I didn't bother trying the Seven IM app because it only supports Gtalk and MSN. I need both MSN and Facebook Chat/IM support.

Here I come to hijack a thread for a device I didn't own but stumbled across as I was googling Android email apps.
In case you weren't aware, there is absolutely nothing wrong with the email apps or the way they connect to Hotmail using the exchange protocol.
It's purely that Hotmail Exchange via m.hotmail.com doesn't support HTML yet - it's a Microsoft issue. Will they ever implement it - who knows? But the fact remains if you want your Hotmail in HTML format then you're stuck with connecting via POP3 for the moment.

No, HTML Hotmail is a no-go regardless of the device or app you are using. Hotmail simply does not support HTML over their Exchange connection, only POP3.
If you are asking about straightforward HTML in your email when connecting to say a corporate exchange account, then yes, obviously depending on the app and version of exchange.
