[07/24/2008] Finger Friendly Contact Application - PocketCM Contacts 0.25c - Alphabet - Windows Mobile Development and Hacking General

[01/25/2009] PocketCM Contacts 0.29 - Finger Friendly Contact Application
Hi all,
I've release PocketCM Contacts 0.29, feel free to test, comment, etc...
I made a new thread, because the old one isn't really manageable anymore, and this version is a big rewrite of lot of stuff, so I expect a few regression issue.
Theme for 0.18 and before will not work correctly with this version, you need 0.29 theme
Support for SMS forwarding
Support for sending SMS to multiple contact at once
Better VGA support: more usable, react better to the finger, improved Black and Dream theme
Big speed improvment on animation (looks nice on VGA now)
Speed optimization for all text rendering (smoother than ever)
Various fix and improvements
Faster SMS loading
Improved theme developer mode: read here

Hi
Just loaded it up, changed it to the black skin, which i like best. Seems to run great, haven't run into any problems yet. Very nice work, mate.
One think i did notise is, that when I go into a contact, the "Back" is missing the right side of the "B". Just the vertical part. No biggie, but still guess it's not suppose to be like that.
Keep up the great work.
Flemming

this is truly the best tool ever for pdas. thanks a million times for your hard work.

Great update you're doing a great job.
Loading times is better than 0.15, which is a great improvement.
IMHO - the only thing missing is a keyboard easy to find a contact, and the best one I could find is the one found in FingerFriendlyFriends program. I truly love that keyboard. Implementing it in PocketCM would make it simply perfect.
Keep up the awesome work!!

CABless Installation
Guys, how do I do this ?
(Sorry found it on the website)

Why do you need a keyboard when all you have to do is slide your finger down the side of the screen to get the alphabet bar, it doesn't get much easier than that!

Install from a zip: copy the files
Filtering with keyboard: click on phone (bottom right) and you can filter easily
great job.
Few messages are missing, for instance when you want to delete a contact.

Tene, I love the start-up time now, it has dramatically decreased. My only quirks: It seems like the scrolling feature has a delay, I will flick and it will stall a second and then it will scroll very fast. It doesnt seem as smooth as iContact. Also, when pushing the favorites tab I think the word favorites should change to All after it is pressed because pressing it again leads back to all the contacts. When you used to have buttons the filter used to change to the all contacts button after you press it, why does it not when its just words? overall great though, good work Tene

Did u try it?? it 1000 times easier to use that keyboard than scrolling with your finger, at least that's my opinion.
And since there's already a keyboard why not use a better one

Yes I have tried it and I do like it as well. However it does take up a good amount of screen real estate and for this reason I would rather not see it implemented.

Thanks .... Very Good Job But Still have the bug when I press and hold phone .... its minimize by it self and i can not press close button... why !!! idon not know

do i need to uninstall 0.15 first?

much better than previous version on the athena. runs fast now and very good. only quirk is it seems the animation for the filter is slow though on vga and lags. seems like sms animation lags a bit too. but much better than previous versions

Ive only noticed one bug, when using the the side scroll to go to contacts by letter, if i try to scroll all the way down to the end of my contacts, it does the bounce animation and half the screen (left) shows the end of my contact list and the other half (right) shows the beginning of my contact list starting at "A"
I dont have any "X", "Y", or "Z" contacts in my phone either so i dont know if that helps
thanks for making such an amazing piece of software.

Can we use the themes we made for the previous version, or do we have to start from scratch?
Love the app by the way!!

Wow.. loading time is nice now. I like it a lot (black theme). Looks much cleaner and more crisp.
Nice improvement!
Same buggies as already said in the topic, when using side scroll (a/z) and I select the z the screen seems to break up a bit. Also don't have Z in my phonebook.
And yeah, the B of 'Back' is a bit too far to the left, but that seems more like a skinning thingy.
Other than that it's working great so far!

If I understand correctly you have to start from scratch because a lot has changed for the skinning.
New skinning has much more options and can be much more customized as far as I know. Also has gradients done with color codes rather than images.
Haven't tried it out yet (the skinning) but this is what I've read here and there.

I thought I had seen that somewhere as well...that sucks, I just got to the point I made a couple skins I like (for me, that is quite the accomplishment LOL)!!!!

I have a suggestion to make it even faster for some cases.
It seems you do a lot more processing than necessary to activate the PocketCM window on launch if it's already open.
If PocketCM is already running, switching to PocketCM from a task manager is much quicker than launching the .exe again. So maybe you can optimize your launch code to look for an existing instance earlier in your code and active it if it's already running.

Just a thought
Till now I have't seen any one making tabbed navigation based on category unless I missed. So here is my thought.
Design part1:Top row will have 30-40 pixels space for tabs and categorised header values in it Like office tools,Messaging tools,Phone tools, Fun tools, games,Networking tools, Misc tools etc.
Functonality:Clicking on each tab will show respective lauch icons in the bottom area.Ofcourse users should be given option to catagorise their tools into one of given headers list. Its nice if we can give users an option to define header tab values as well.
Design part2:Now bottom 250-260 pixels area is reserved for icons as shown in your attachment.Place a graphic background with spiral binding in middle of two vertical columns and overley our launching icons on that back ground. its nice if users are given option to change background.
Functonality:scrolling finger from right end to back should turn to next page which is having next set of icons in the selected category. Its nice if we can show some page turn animation. In the same way swiping finger from left end to front should turn page back.
It looks more great if it is full screen and added 3D graphic background with some shadows on spiral and tab.
No need to mention that application is lauched on clicking the icons
Best of luck.

Thanks for the suggestions jonnala,
Launch Manager has something called shortcut pages,
which is a group of 10 shortcuts,
and you can create a shortcut to a page, so its like your category.
Keep in mind launch manager can handle hundreds of shortcuts not just the 10 displayed
I am working on ways to indicate pages better.
And the fancy graphics are planned too.
And changing background is also planned, you can change tiles.bmp for now.
Please download it and give it a try, I have a feeling you may like it.
Thank You
Take Care

Wow i really like it. its almost 60% as I said in my eariler post.I can create one page called home (having page short cuts) and dedicate one icon space to home page in all remaining pages(having program shortcuts).

Hmmmmmmmmm.
Its similar to the build in launcher from wktask and thats freeware.
But of course its a nice application, it has more shortcuts and its fast.
I would suggest to add one feature:
If the shortcut is one to a phone call contact it would be great to see the picture of this contact (if theres a picture).
hope this is a freeware...but its nice!
It reminds me of mortbuttons which is freeware as well.

Hey.. cool. Touchflo type scrolling (make it work like the touch cube and you're a legend) and showing the contact picture will make this a real gem. It's like a launcher and contact management type of software in one.

First Glance
At first glance it looks amazing!!! I might get flamed for that but it is my opinion.
Currently,
-Sliding is smooth.
-It has a contacts application! Would like to see an option for Favorite Contacts.
-Calendar rework on the ribbon is great. Shows numerous days appointments.
-Dpad controls are present.
-Really intuative.
-Customization of animation is available under Customize Home. It can flip like the cube but in all directions.
-Battery drain is better but still a little more than my liking. This is probably device specific.
-Resource usage is down on my Wizard from before but still higher than most small programs
This is probably because things that PointUI controls in their interface like Weather, Contacts, CommManager
etc are always available immediately, no delay. It takes resources to do that. But I have to say overall 2 of
2 of the most recent cubes I have tried and 1 of the iphone knock offs I have tried have both been Ram hogs
with half the immediate access or smoothness this program gives.
-Messaging and calendar seem to be customizable to a degree still using a reg editor. See http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=355961
-They have their own keyboard going on. Try to edit a contact and see what I mean. It would be nice to see it
skinnable because the color of it is so dark.
-Scrolling is still opposite. Both on press and direct, and flick to scroll but I like it.
------
Things I'd Like to see--These may actually come, see my notes below
-More options on weather. I like HTC Weather plugin much better. It would be nice to see more forcasts then
today and tomorrow. I really think a Hybrid of HTC Today Weather and Weather Watcher would be the best
but they may have an issue covering all of the countries.
-PointUI Calendar-Bet its coming
-PointUI SMS-Bet its coming
-PointUI VOIP
-PointUI Dialpad
-PointUI Media Hub & Player. Bet something like it is coming but man wouldn't it be great if they would team up with
A_C to make a killer integrated app!!!!!
-Rework the lock screen. Again they should talk to A_C here.
-Would like to see a Charging indicator on the home page battery icon. It does show however when pressed.
-Would like to see a Sync icon appear when connected to the PC
I haven't spent much more than 10 minutes with it. I don't know how customizable it is as of yet. It looks like on their site they are developing more programs and customizations to go with it. I also notice that at the top of the download section there was an emphasis on this Home being "Free". That along with the green check marks for some things and red x's for others makes me think that adds or improvements may cost money going forward.
Thats ok. Good programs do cost money and should be paid for.
I will add more as I test further.

Completely approve with you
I know it's a little early but to make this program "perfect" :
- an integrated SMS manager, like they did for Contacts
- surely theme customisation
- a shortcut manager for programs on the HOME screen (eg change the outlook calendar to ThumbCal or the Messaging to a program other than Outlook messaging)
Though, this program is still GREAT, and this update brings decents modifications and fixes

I believe the integrated SMS is coming. Just from looking at their website it will be there but they will probably charge for it and good for them.
Theme customization same thing
The shortcut manager is there in a way. Just press the "Star" Icon. I actually think it helps keep the screen clean of clutter. For you other 2 requests, ThumbCal and Messaging. You can change these using a reg editor. Not as simple as a ui but it can be done. Let me know if you need help with it.

new version looks promising..waiting for Wm2003 Edition
The new version is incredible!!!
a quick question
I am using version 1.02b, is it better to uninstall this version and start fresh? or should I use the update manager instead?
I really liked PointUI when it first came out, but realized pretty soon that I couldn't use it because of the way it lists the tasks. I was really hoping they had fixed that in this version, but see that it still lists tasks alpabetically instead of by due date.
Looks great, and the "Pick a version" screen definately implies "another (non free) version is coming soon"

I would recommend you completely unintall the previous version. By that I mean go through their unistall method and soft reset. Then file explore and delete all info out of \Program Files. Then reg edit and delete all info in \HKCU and \HKLM. Soft reset and then use this one.
Cheers

[UPDATE][10/10/2008] TouchLaunch 0.0.3! so beautiful ( NET2&NET3.5 ) with some skins
0.0.4 version: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=437773
TouchLaunch is simple application launcher, which scans start menu shortcuts, and list them alphabetically. Kind of similar to scoll launcher
but this has new quick alphabetic scroll function. This is very early alpha and my first program release.
Features:
-finger scrolling
-quick alphabet shortcuts
-skinnable
-you can choose whether it closes after program launch or not

[0.0.1][10/06/2008]
[0.0.2][10/07/2008]
+Skin changer
+Better skinning support
+You can use bitmaps as list item highlight
+6 premade skins
+closeAfterLaunch feature
[0.0.3][10/10/2008]
+backgroundbitmaps
+you can use your today's screen background as this program's background
+ability to choose whether minimize or terminate on exit
+automatic closing ( either minimize or exit on closing )
+it's minimizes correctly, so you can leave it on running background
+should work on all different language roms!
Known "bugs":
-skin change takes about 5 sec... so don't panic
-if closeAfterLaunch feature is on and you switch to other application,
TouchLaunch will close in 2 seconds.
-if you try to launch phone ( or calendar ), it will launch softaware and after that it will crash...
-using bitmaps multiples memory usage, but you can avoid that using simpler skins
-menu is ugly
Requirements:
.NET CF 2.0
wm6 ( might work with wm5 ), i have only tested on emulator and on my elf
qvga or vga
Instructions:
Download and install the cab file
or download the zip file, extract it to any folder on your ppc and run the exe file.
Making new skins you can look example from premade skins in the skin folder at installation folder, two of them ( white.xml and original.xml ) are commented. Adding new just copy your skin xml file in the skins folder.
ToDo:
-better skin support
-adding some animations
-icons ( maybe someone could give me a hint )
-bug fixes
-landscape support
-performance tweaking
-optimizing memory usage
Feel free comment, and give me more ideas!
If like it, you can always donate to keep me motivated

Yes, you can change all the colors and also change placements of different elements by modifying skin.xml file. It doesn't support using background bitmaps, but i'm planning to make that for nex release.
Every object has these attributes, which you can modify:
Code:
<ELEMENT>
<NAME>mainList</NAME>
<BGCOLOR>105105105</BGCOLOR>
<FORECOLOR>245245245</FORECOLOR>
<X>12</X>
<Y>0</Y>
<WIDTH>228</WIDTH>
<HEIGHT>268</HEIGHT>
</ELEMENT>
the colors are 9 digit RGB values ( example. BGCOLOR is 105105105, so it has 105 red, 105 green, 105 blue ). Make sure you always use three numbers, even if value is under 100, for example 5 -> 005.

Actually you can use select image, because it use the same KlistControl code base. Just copy png bitmap to execution folder and name it as select.png. The dimensions must match the dimensions configured in the skin.xml. So, by default it's 228x40.
Looks nice
Few pointers if I may it starts kind of slow it takes about 4 seconds to open it on my kaiser. And the search engine is kind of not finger friendly it,s hard to select a letter with your thumb. I think that bigger letters would do the trick for example you could place half of the alphabet on the left side of the screen and the rest on the right side or introduce the search engine similar to the one present in IContacts.
Great job

Thanks for responses and ideas!
The slow start time is mostly compact framework's fault, one idea is to let it run on background or switch to WIN32 api... but i did look up Icontact's source and felt it was not my kind of cookie But there's some tweaking that could be done. About the scroll touch, i find it quite good on my touch.
It helps to not really trying to hit right alphabet but instead follow what the on screen indexshower shows, and if it's wrong letter just slide your finger up or down. have to say that i'm not big fan of the idea dividing the alphabets but the Icontact alphabet's style could be an idea...
Btw. out of concept, but does anyone know any free coctail databases? Because i have done earlier a program that displays coctail recipes, but the database i use is something that i can't publish. firstly because i don't have authors permission and secondly because it's in Finnish It would perfect if database would be in XML format.
Just added a cab installer.
If the memory footprint is low and by saying low I mean less than 500kb then it's a good idea. WIN32 api??? Well that's double dutch to me
Well I think I've got too big thumbs While holding the phone in one hand I'm not able to access the alphabet with my thumb. I've tried pressing the alphabet area and then slide it up or down to choose a letter but I end up scrolling the list with applications up or down. So maybe widening the alphabet touch area would do the trick. Also I think that moving the indexshower to the upper or even upper right part of the screen would prevent it from being covered by a thumb while picking a letter.
I don't know any cocktail databases at least not free ones
Would it be possible to map it to the "all programs" soft key in TF3D?
Looks nice, thanks for the good work.
Installed and tried it. A pgm which works great. Very handy as I do not have every programs set for my iFonz icons. I couple of suggestions:
1) To group pgm names by alphabet, something like iContact. When the scroll reaches a particular alphabet, the alphabet will appear in the middle, more like you're selecting from the left alphabet option.
2) A handy A to Z table like iContact rather than the alphabets tiny-ly arranged on the left.
I can live with the color but if there's skin to select, it will be prefect.
Thank you for such brilliant pgm.

New Version 0.0.2!
It's more skinnable, you can change also font. And I made 6 example skins. I would love see few good custom skins in this thread, which i could add to next release.

Any chance it could use the today wallpaper for background?

1) That's possible and a good idea.
2) I'm going with tiny alphabets for now, but that would be nice option to add later versions, though i have to make whole new control for that.
The new version has the old color scheme and new white one, i would like i have some darker on like on scroll launcher also.. maybe some talented skinning artist in this forum could provide me that I'm not so talented with skin creating.

Orb Phone Interface Concept - Lock Screen (Updated 2/26/09)

Hello XDA-ers!! Updates Recently Made 2/26/2009 4:20 PM US Mountain Time
I have a concept for an interface replacement for Windows Mobile. I've made a Youtube video showing what it would look like, but the video is just some screenshots that are stiched together to make a vid. If I could get the help of developers, then I could make this a reality.
The Youtube Vid: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=91Iw7Z4-Rho
The video is just of the Lock Screen, and I haven't even put in the unlocking animation, just the sliding to unlock thing.
How this interface works:
So, you turn on your phone, and you're greeted with this unlock screen:
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",
"lightbox_stop_slideshow": "Stop slideshow",
"lightbox_full_screen": "Full screen",
"lightbox_thumbnails": "Thumbnails",
"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
(Hopefully the picture above worked)
Updated 2/26/2009 4:20 PM US Mountain Time
If you had another program open when you turned off your phone, then your lock screen would have the program in the background instead of your wallpaper. So, if you had Internet Explorer running and then you turned your phone off, the next time you turn your phone on, you'll see this screen:
To unlock, you just drag the Start icon outside of the blue region as seen in the Youtube clip. Once it's outside of the blue region, you release, and the blue region and Start icon will disappear. Then you can begin using your phone. Here's the Internet Explorer unlocked:
The scroll bars in the Internet Explorer are for guidance only. You use kinetic scrolling to get around the page just like Skyfire or the iPhone browser. At the top of the page is the URL bar. Then on the left, in order, is the Back button, Foward button, Reload button, Home button, Favorites, and then other websites that are bookmarked to the side bar like msn, google, xda-dev, and cnet.
If you don't touch the screen after a few seconds, say 3 seconds, then all of the icons and scroll bars will disappear, leaving your webpage wide open to explore:
Yet you still may notice that in each corner there is a low glowing color, representing the 4 orbs. The top left is glowing orange, right green, bottom left blue, right yellow. This represents the four colors in the Start icon, if you noticed. The low glow from the corner tells the user that the menus are hidden but they are still there and accessible. The user would just tap the screen or move the webpage to bring up all of the menus.
If you want to go straight to your phone, then you can just drag the Start icon from the lock screen up to the phone, and it will start your phone. Same with the other icons.
Here's all of the icons labeled for the first unlock screen:
Phone Icon - Displays number of missed calls/voicemails. When clicked on, it shows missed calls/voicemails, contacts, history, dialer, etc.
Messaging Icon - Displays number of missed TXT's, Emails, and even Instant Messages. When clicked on, shows your missed messages, gives other messaging options, etc.
Notifications Icon - Displays number of any other notifications such as appointments, alarms, and tasks. When clicked on, it shows you the notifications, allows you to take action, etc.
Programs Icon - When clicked on, it allows you to launch programs, plus it shows your running programs so that you can easily close or switch to them.
The Orb icons in the corners will always be up in every program unless a program specifies them to hide. The Orb interface will completely replace the Windows Mobile interface. The interface is completely touch and finger friendly.
Go HERE to see an idea of what an incoming call would look like.
I need help to make this interface become a reality. I don't know programming and I could use help with icon design. If any of you can help me with this, then that would be great. I would love to see this interface rise up to the top with PointUI and others.
So write me a reply in this thread or anything. I need the help.
Thanks so much for watching the video and looking at the pics,
Andrew
I like the concept too bad I know nothing about programing!
wow
it's very beautiful!
this looks like it could be a good concept for a wisbar desktop skin
wow!look great!
I'm thinking about trying to get A_C to help code it. He has done some good stuff with his S2U2 and S2P and everything.
Thanks for taking interest in this though, I'll give you guys a beta version when there is a beta

I've also thought about using Wisbar Desktop but I want something that would be a full interface replacement, something thats really smooth, flashy, and beautiful. I could make a quick Wisbar theme, but I want this to be similar to PointUI's original interface.
Developers, where are you? lol. I guess I'll spend my rodeo break learning C++ or whatever you code in. Just kiddin, that would be a long rodeo break.
Honestly developers, anyone out there?
Keep up the hype about this though, it helps.
Thx everyone,
Andrew
I like the concept, it brings everything to the desktop in a very simple way. Though i have a remark. The arrangement should be different in my opinion. The start-menu should be upper left and the notifications and messages should be in the lower right and left corner.
The start menu should be there because in your current proposition you break with the position of the start menu of the OS. If the upper left corner is the best place can be questioned. But by not breaking with the way the OS is structured you are making your desktop replacement easier to get used to.
The messages and notifications should be at the lower end of the screen because they "belong together". By putting them on the lower bar, they will "work together".
Though you could always let the user choose
This seems similar to the TAT concept that Meizu M8 copied (or was it vice versa? I don't think so).
See here for their unlocking ideas:
http://www.tat.se/site/showroom/prototypes_movies2.html
I think the "Boing" one is the prettiest.

Yes the unlock thing is similar to TAT's drag and drop unlock or some of their others. TAT has some real amazing stuff, I think it inspired me some, but i thought of the original design of the 4 orbs in the corners way before I saw TAT.
If only TAT gave us some of their sweet stuff that they design.

That's a good idea for the start menu since it's familiar with Windows Mobile, but my plan for this interface is for it to completely replace the Windows Mobile interface, so you would never see the original Start Menu again.
I haven't thouroughly thought out the icon placement yet, I worked up these rough images just this morning in about 3 hours.
Thanks for the comment, I'll consider upper right!
Andrew
the tat stuff looks pretty nice definately interesting in see how this comes along
ace maybe if you look into some of the code for pontui you might be able to implement this with some work i think pontui is something like html or xml or something like that

I've also considered PointUI. Yet, I think the best way to make a perfected interface would be to write all of the code custom.
Thanks for writing, and yea, the PointUI 2 does have more customizability so I could look into that as an option.
Andrew

That looks like msn explorer???
That picture that your talking about is the internet browser, which is visiting the site msn.com
Some of the icons used in the internet browser are from Internet Explorer 8, but most of them are custom created. The theme was all created by me, I haven't seen msn explorer for ages.
Anyways I use msn for my mail, so I chose that webpage cuz that's how i get to my mail.
Andrew
even those buttons on the corners look too early 2000's Windows. Not the icons but rather the color scheme in general. I dunno its just my opinion.

Yea I could agree with that, I made the icons in Word 2007, so I didn't expect anything spectacular.
When do the developers sign on? Or are they all busy making other stuff?
I like the concept, and I'm very willing to try and make it a reality. Once I get a phone, lol! I'm getting paid next week, so hopefully if everything goes as planned I'll have a new toy to start developing on!

I've also have a little incoming call concept drawn up here if you haven't seen it yet.
I think that if we made this interface a reality, it could be up near the top with PointUI and SPB Mobile Shell!
Thanks for replying and I hope you get a sick phone!
Oh and what do you write your programs in? I'd like to learn some programming too so I could maybe help develop this interface.
So write back here sometime if you'd like to start designing this!
Thanks,
Andrew

beautiful!

[Skin] FEB 22, 2010 Perf upgd for the KBD: added PSD's

Some people might remember me from the Wizard forums...
it has been a long time since I made a public contribution on this forum, but the time has come that I will be making another one soon. it is not a full rom as of yet, but it is somthing that might be just as good.
If you look in my signature I have been working and testing a theory that graphics processing is a major contributer to laggy interface. one of the problems is the keyboard that we have come to depend on (the on screen keyboard made by HTC)
this keyboard has about 100 image files that the cpu has to process some from the PNG files and most in the SIPBITMAPS.DLL . well, I went through all of them 88 in the dll + the png files. got rid of the dithering, made uniform color schemes and overall optimised the gfx to be as light weight as possible. so light in fact that the package weighs nearly 25% less than the original one made by HTC.
I need some testers. ones who type really fast with the EZ INPUT KEYBOARD. once it is tested and proven that it is in fact faster, I will release it to the public. those interested in testing, PM me so that I can send you the CAB and directions (testting conditions)
If you have bench marking programs that would help too.
thanks for testing.
P.S. the point of this exersise is to give me a reason to "fix" the lag in the 10mb of ram eating phone skin which take a full 2 seconds to load. I figur if the keyboard is improved the most vital part of our phones should be fixed. it just takes a lot more work for those files... and it better be worth spending more than tree days of my time fixing it.

the best way to test it is to do a soft reset; put on an mp3 file (once the phone boots and loads everything, so let the manila start up and load every tab. turn on the mp3; go into the notepad app and start typing while the music is playing. about half way through the song rotate the device (if you use the gyro rotation) and test how long it takes to catch up. (the rotation causes lag)
do the same thing with the modded gfx cab that I provided on the first post.
You can also do the test without the music playing, but the results will not be as apparent.

[EDIT 2/18/10] For those who do not have the same version of 2.1 keyboard and may have a different layout, I attached the XML files out of my package. I don't know if it will work to fix your layout, but it might. let me know if it works
[EDIT 2/22/2010] I added My PSD files for those who wish to change the skin in any way. I also added a comment for the .zip file.
For those who wish to change the background to a SOLID grey, you just need to change the black background to a grey of your choice. for those who wish to have the old dithered background with a lot of colors, then just make the black layer invisible (although the keyboard will run slower)
HINT: when it comes to PNG's, black is least in bytes as opposed to GIF's where it is oposite. With bitmaps it does not matter, what matters ultimately is the complexity of the pixel mosaic.
Have fun
A great idea! That must've taken quite a while to figure out
But I'm not really a fast typer when it comes to the on-screen keyboard, so I'll wait for the (possibly) public release.
does not seem like there is much interest.
either due to the holiday, or what?
I tested it last night while playing music and there is no lag. there is a bit of a lag when rotating to landscape, but only lasts about two seconds and the lag is gone. (while playing music) maybe I should post some screens or have the mods move ot to the dev/hack section. some people rely on the screen keyboard only.
I would like to test this out.
I think I can type pretty fast on the on-screen keyboard, well, if it allowed me to. Primarily I find myself having to slow down when I hit space. Sometimes I'll go so fast the space input doesn't register, effectively merging the words together.

Hey man, I'll give it a test drive for you...just know that I'm on the stock T-mobile US 6.1 ROM. I'm sure I'll be texting as much this afternoon as ever, so I'll give it a try and see how it feels.
ADDED THE CAB ON THE FIRST POST sorry for the caps.
try it and let me know how it works for you. seems a lot faster than the original.
I also just installed the russian cab, and it is slow as hell in comparison. so I know it works.
enjoy.
I think that if I make a new phone skin, I will have to do it on the basis of donations recieved for the keyboard. just too much work.

Just saw your update, and grabbed the .cab, will start using it first thing in the AM, and have impressions by end of the day.
Thanks a lot for the effort either way...I'm trying every improvement to the on-screen kb that I can find, to make me less jittery about moving to the HD2 in a month or two
I tested your cab, and it does seem to respond better, and the letter's pop up faster. I'm probably not the fastest phone typer, but the original files would not keep up with me. With your fixed files, it seems to do a much better job, although still not as fast as I type. I'm running IME 1922/2011, so I'm not 100% sure how much of a difference it makes, but if you want I can run a spb benchmark with 1920 before and after installing your speedy files.
Glad to see you in the WVGA stuff, I used some of your stuff when I had an omnia.
I installed it a few mins ago and I can already notice quite a difference. Before, like ^^ he said, the buttons would not keep up with me typing, but now that lag is completely gone. I would say it is a very noticeable difference if you use the soft keyboard much. Thank you very much. (BTW, I am on the 2/14 SSS R8.5 ROM with Manila 2012)
I think the trick to doing a comparison is do a soft reset; turn on some long mp3 and type. first with the original keyboard, then with mine (black background and dithering removed).
I'm glad that it is working better for you... hopefully this will be a good performance upgrade for all of us.
The damn phone skin has such complicated gfx that I will have to make a different dialer button (the red and green one) it won't look as nice, but the interface should behave a little faster... especially when cooked in.
tested on my topaz with last duttys ROM 6.5.3 and its better ty
Not working correctly on Sprint Version
Everything seems a bit faster, but the symbol on the space bar is mess up.
Instead of the regular symbol there's just a line in down the middle of the space bar. Function wise, works perfect. Mike
Sprint TP2 Stock 6.1
HUGE difference!
Ok, so I've been trying this out all morning, and I have to say it's a dramatic improvement of the response speed of the on-screen keyboard
My error rate has also dropped significantly since using it...I thought I was usually just fat-fingering a lot of keys, but now that they respond much faster I'm making 10% of the typos I did before.
I've also noticed that part of what makes it faster is how its quicker to pull up the symbol (punctuation, etc) on a long-press, that was one of the first things I noticed when trying it.
It looks good too, I think, save for that split-spacebar mentioned above. Oh, and one minor detail...the graphic for the XT9 switch doesn't change when you toggle it. I almost never use that, so not a big deal to me, just an fyi.
So....great job S.V.I, thanks!! If I can get the on-screen KB on the HD2 (once I get it) to be this smooth, I won't feel nearly as bad about it not having a physical KB

which version are you using???
IME_EzInput_Western_2_1_19202429_00 is the one in my rom stock tmo 6.5
I do not have the issue with the space bar not showing up right.
also, just to make sure that I uploaded the right cab, is the space bar in a grey box or a black box (meaning the background) are you using a different language?? can you post a screenshot?
Will this work on any TP2, GSM and CDMA?

That explains it. the EZINPUT in the 6.1 rom is 2.0 while in the 6.5 rom it is 2.1
the SIPBitmaps dll is different. that would explain why you do not have the xt9 button showing up either. it is a different version of the keyboard.

Understood, that makes sense. It really doesn't seem to have any impact on the overall effectiveness of your changes, so those two minor things don't bother me at all.
I've been using it all day now, and it looks like this will finally let me give the slider on my HW keyboard a much-needed break!
Fantastic idea, great work! I'll test it out now...
only 34 downloads...
where should I post this so that it gets the best exposure???
