Newbee: Modifying Ext. Rom with ER2003 Edit

Hi ,
Just downloaded the ER2003 EDIT utility to modify the Extended ROM in my XDA2.
Previously I also downloaded some ROM files available from this web site. Like the RUU15283wwe_cdl.exe
What I am missing now is how to create my own Extended ROM.
The question is the ER2003 Edit asks for an NBF file.
What I have is only EXE file that when I install, automatically decompress and they try to install directly on the pocketPC.
Am I missing something?
Is it possible to have the Extended ROM .NBF file of the Imate version?
Thanks and regards,
Claudio.
Claudio,
Just extract the ROM image (the exe file) with Winzip to a new folder.
Then you can open the ms_.nbf file with er2003edit.
Grtz,
Jos
Thanks for your prompt reply.
I unzipped the file and it comes out an EXE file. When I double click on the EXE file it does not decompress into files, but it starts an InstallShield Wizard, and it begin an installation process.
Can I modify this?
Claudio,
Just unzip this file again with Winzip in a new folder.
You should get 6 files:
- HimaClearJumpCode.exe
- HimaGetDeviceData.exe
- HimaUpgradeUt.exe
- ms_.nbf
- NK.nbf
- Radio_.nbf
The extended ROM is contained in the ms_.nbf file.
When you change the ROM, you should also modify the config.txt file in the ROM.
The ROM upgrade of the XDA can be started with HimaUpgradeUt.exe.
Grtz,
Jos
Hi,
alternatively: When the Installshield setup starts, browser to your temp folder and you will find the extracted files in a sub-folder. Just copy the files to another folder and close the Installshield wizard (which will delete the original extracted files)
Password
It asks me for a password so i can open the rom file..... Can someone help?
I'have got the same problem asking me for a password
HELP ANYONE??????????????????????
me too , all passwords not working. Ive got the lastest release ..
someone asked me to specify the type from the Open Dialogue option
i mean choose :
1- File -> Open Rom Image
2- from the opened box change the drop down option from :
[ WM2003 Auto-Detect ROM *.nbf ] ---> to [WM2003 Extended Rom (ms_.nbf) ]
and it should solve the problem ..
I've tried it but it gave me same password error ...

Converting EXE to CAB for Extended ROM Auto-Install?

Hey Guys,
I have been customising my extended rom so when I hard reset I get all the applications I want (Resco file explorer etc). I have been doing this with .cab files fine.
The problem is that I have files which are .exe setup files (e.g Flash player 6). These have to be installed on the PC, and the cab is copied to the XDA and run. I would like to just have e.g a flash CAB file to put on the extended ROM.
is there a way to convert the PC EXE into a XDA cab file, or some way to run the PC exe on the device automatically in extended rom?
I know some .exe setup files can be extracted using winrar which then give you the cab file, flash player isnt one of them though.

Jez.

Use Windows Registry Editor (regedit.exe) to look for the path where your Desktop Exes are extracted to PocketPC Cabs:
Look for this value:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows CE Services]
"InstalledDir"="k:\system\hardware\pda\imate\ASync"
Now, open your Windows Explorer and go to the path. You will find your cabs in corresponding folders (e.g, folder MacromediaFlash shall contain Flash6.arm.cab and etc...)
If you need to do more complex restoration, use Restorator tool. It restores your directory and file structure, registry settings, installs cabs, writes boot screens and does everything nice...
Oh my god, you are both bloody geniouses!!
This is wicked, cheers guys!

Jez.
Any other ways to xtracting & repacking to cab?
Renaming the file format (exe to any formats) & exe xtractor software doesn't work.
I can compress any data to .cab, but how to xtract perfectly exe files?
Convert EXE to Cab online without having to download any software
If you have an EXE file that you would normaly run on your PC to install a sofware... it looks like this online converter work to have it converted into a cab file for your cell phone!!!
try it!
1- first you need to compress your EXE file into a ZIP folder... that will create a ZIP file on your desktop.
2- then you go to http://media-convert.com/convert/
3- browse on the first field to determine witch file on your pc you want to convert .. select the ZIP file you just created...
4- on the second part of the page you will be ask what format you want to convert your ZIP file to .. on the scrolldown menu select . CAB... and hit the convert button .. the online service will do the rest ..
Basicaly will upload your file onto their server , process it and render it to you on a file download link ...
There you go you have now a CAB version of your EXE file to upload on your phone with ActiveSync...
My problem
how to say... the site is cool ,and i get my file converted. However, the nature of that file hasn't been changed into a cab. it is still an exe. I dunno if i have done something wrong when converting.

How do I install a cab file please

How do I install a cab file please.?On my Mda 2 ?I installed the mppc 2003 SE merged rom up date (from this site), on my MDA 2 and it worked oK for a couple of days then the device hard reset itself and there was no camera soft ware on it anymore. I thought if I installed the camera software on its own from this site that might be the answer. But it is in cab file form and I DONT KNOW WHERE TO BEGIN/ can anyone help please?
Installing a CAB file is easy...with ActiveSync, drag the file from your PC to your PDA (I drag them to the windows dir, but not sure if this is really necessary).
Then, go to your PDA, to the dir where you dropped the CAB, and just click it once...that is all.
About your other probs, I have no idea...I guess I need more info.
Good luck.
more details about installing cab files?
thanks for your answer. I'm hopeful - but I'm really not very technical. Can I ask more details? When I open the "camera cab file" I get a screen full of little icons all the same. Is each of these a seperate cab file? - do I open the "camera cab" folder, and then drag each one of these little icons seperately to my pocket pc document folder. Or should I NOT open the "camera" folder but just drag the WHOLE folder into my pocket pc document folder - and then active sync with my mda 2. I wish there was a site where I could see the instrucions clearly - with DIAGAMMEs! is there such a site? thanks...
copy the whole cab file

really newbie question - install software

hi.. i download a few program for my nike.. all in winzip files.. so how i want to install to my nike? using sync? memory card? tq..
The files inside the zip's should be cabs - extract these, stick them on your SD Card & put back in the phone, browse to the file with File Explorer & just click the file & hopefully it should launch. Some cabs require a reboot after installation so don't be surprised if it asks you to do i
thanks bro.. find some zip file contains exe icon.. but some zip files does't support by winzip.. so cant open it..
.cab - should be open on PPC
.exe - on Desktop (sometimes on PPC)

I usually sync to my laptop and D/L from there to my documents or another appropriate file on the phone. Click and drag, easy.
I need more info. You downloaded the cab file to your PC and then copied the cab to your device via activesync? Where did you copy the file to in your HD? Generally what I do is copy the cab file from my PC to my SD card via activesync. Go to my storage card via file explorer in programs. Touch the cab file, and it installs.
I downloaded HD-Tweak from here http://montecristoff.webs.com/hdtweak.htm, but the zip file does not show a .cab file? it only shows a .xml setup file, which, when I try to open, opens in an Opera browser?
you downloaded a cab file, not a zip file, which it looks like you extracted mistakenly as a zip file which is why you're dealing w/ the xml. Copy the cab file that you downloaded from your pc to your phone and then run it on the phone.
Alternatively if you have Cabviaactivesync installed you can just right click on the cab from your pc w/ the phone attached and select CabviaActivesync and it will start the installation on your phone.
I see what's happening. The cab file is what you downloaded. Inside the cab file is a bunch of things, one of which is an xml setup file, which I think you're copying and trying to install on your device. For whatever reason, after you unzip, your taken inside the guts of the cab file. You don't copy any of that. Close out of that. You don't open a cab file. On your PC, the cab file should be an icon that looks like a blue and white file cabinet. If you see that, don't open it. Instead, either drag the icon into your device via activesync or copy it into your device via activesync. Once in the device, go to folder in which you copied it and tap on it. It should then install properly.
Wow! thanks, it worked.
