Your Web Everywhere: Opera Mini 4 hits the streets
http://www.opera.com/pressreleases/en/2007/11/07/
After three betas we're proud to release the shiny new Opera Mini 4 to the world.
We've done a lot with this new Opera Mini. For example, we rewrote the entire code for Opera Mini 4 and added lots of improvements and new features to make the browser even better.
Opera Mini 4 is based on the same rendering engine as the Opera 9.5 desktop browser. The browser still has a very small install size, less than 100k, even though we've added all these cool new features.
With all the time and work that we've put in on our end, we wouldn't be able to bring you the world's best mobile browser without your help and support. We owe a great amount of appreciation to all those of you who helped with our beta testing, bug reporting, and providing feedback in the Opera Mini forums and on your blogs. Thanks.
So what have we done with Opera Mini 4?
Opera Link
We've added support for Opera Link in Opera Mini 4. With Opera Link, you're able to instantly synchronize and share your bookmarks and Speed Dial with the Opera browser for your computer.
Overview mode
Opera Mini 4 includes a new rendering architecture that allows you to view webpages just like you would on your computer. When you first load a webpage, Opera Mini will show you an overview snapshot of the page; using the new mouse cursor you can instantly zoom in to the selected region of the page.
Size of text fits width of screen
Opera Mini 4 dynamically changes the size of the text on webpages to fit the width of your phone's screen, meaning you won't have to scroll horizontally.
Context menu
A context menu is displayed when pressing the number 1 key. From the context menu you could change the viewing modes to 'Mobile view', reload the page, and show webpage information. When the mouse cursor is focused on a link, the Context menu will show you the link information (i.e. where the link points to, etc.).
Mouse cursor
With the mouse cursor you could scroll to any direction on the page and more easily click on links.
Scrolling shortcuts
Pressing these number key shortcuts will help you quickly navigate around the page.
2 - Page up
8 - Page down
4 - Go to the left one column
6 - Go to the right one column
5 - Zoom in and out
Create search
With this new feature, you could add any search engine of your choice to the Opera Mini start page. To add a new search engine, click on the search field, press the menu button and click on the 'Create search' option.
View pages in Landscape mode
By pressing the * and # shortcut keys, you could switch the page view to landscape mode.
New standards support
Support for HTML tables, CSS handheld stylesheets, and more advanced support for CSS have been added to Opera Mini.
Bi-directional support
With this new release we've also added support for bi-directional text, adding support for languages such as Hebrew.
Some other notable changes
Added support for small anti-aliased bitmap fonts
Simplified setup process
Improved image quality
Improved fit to width mode rendering
Simplified settings page
Added native blackberry menu
Dialogs are now displayed with round corners and alpha channel overlay windows
New and improved server side cookie handling

GRRRRRRRRRRRRR !!!
Thank you
Wow!
This is easily the best ever software for the pocket pc. What an amazing browser!
I wish opera made operating systems as well.
Damn i wish i could use it but I can't since port 80 is block on t-mobile t-zones plan. Is there any way to make mini's port be something else and make it work just like Opera Mobile works on t-zones plan
Opera Mini is the best and fastet Mobile Browser on the world (if you are using it with JBed).
Great piece of software.
Also check out my review of the final Opera Mini 4 at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=344095
is it a good idea to tweak opera mini like the screenshot? especially for devices without a qwerty^^"

## forward
*# Change screen orientation
** Change windows size
all shortcuts above opera mini4 has built in are very convenient. unfortunately they aren't put in the menu and thus are almost inaccessible for users using a handheld without qwerty...
hopefully someone might be kind enough to help^^"

I usually use the zoom slider in Opera to adjust the zoom level slightly for a certain site such as this forum. As soon as I click a link the new page opens in maximum zoomed out mode however.
Is there some way that I can lock the zoom level so to say so that it will stay the same when I browse around on a certain site (or always)?
Good one, bump.
re
hi,
try to find solution in opera config mode. just open opera browser, type in address bar: opera:config
u will see config mode.
happy holidays
I know about opera config mode and have not found any setting there that can accomplish this. The only thing I can set from there is the "Minimum Overview Zoom" which will affect the default first zoom level for all pages I visit.
What I want to do is zoom in slightly using the zoom slider when on certain sites and then "lock" that zoom level while still on the same site. An ideal solution would be if you could have some configuration file where you could specify the "Minimum Overview Zoom" per domain you visit.
Very good would also be if Opera provided some kind of API for their browser. Then this and other similar issues would be easily fixed by the community.
Hi All,
I would like to present You a small and simple application called Custom Scroll. It gives You a chance to take the opportunity customizing scrolling behavior of HTCScroll Windows addon (which is used in File Explorer, MS Contacts, Programs, Settings... - everywhere where scrolls are used - and we are using fingers (flick gestures) to scroll...
I've noticed that when I'm trying new ROM many times "scrolling feature" need to be modified by myself, so why don't we just make it quick and simple, with predefined checked and accepted values - even maybe "solutions" ?
that's why I've made that application...
I would like to ask You a favor... when You'll be testing Your own values and You'll notice that some of combinations are quite good, please post them 'here' - in this topic ... after testing I'll build them into program.
Please take a look at the video, where I'm showing how does Custom Scroll works and how to operate with it...

Big THANKS to All from XDA Community, [germany]merlot, dr G from ppcgeeks.com
Some sample settings are built-in program (as seen on Video )
another "preset" (in version 1.1 it's: "Prefered #1"):
Speedlow=100
Speedhigh=25
Pagelow=15
Pagehigh=50
VERSION UPDATED to Custom Scroll 1.1 (see #2 post for download)
Read this:dr G from PPCGEEKS.com discovered that:
Pagelow = Low speed scroll page size
Pagehigh = High speed scroll page size
Speedlow = Low speed scroll speed (ms delay)
Speedhigh = High speed scroll speed (ms delay)
Pantype = Enable/disable grab scrolling default 1, 0=disable
The page size is the number of - units - the given interface scrolls when the low or high speed scroll is activated by gesturing - finger flick. For example a pagelow of 20 would scroll 20 contacts each time you flick scroll in the contact list. This is why with the default 50 and 80 settings, flick scrolling causes excessive scrolling in contacts with the device initially.
The low speed scroll is activated by the initial flick gesture. The high speed scroll is activated by an ADDITIONAL flick gesture DURING the scroll initiated by the low speed scroll gesture. So it's kind of like "revving up" the scroll.
The speedlow and speedhigh delays are the delays between the "units" scrolled during either scroll. As such, the speedlow number is higher than the speedhigh number. Thing is, if you set the speedlow number too small, the low speed scroll will finish so quickly, you will not be able to initiate the high speed scroll with an additional gesture.

Thanks a lot for that cichy, I will have a good play with the settings. Can you add any good settings recommendations to your first post please, just so they are easy to find as the thread grows. I guess it should work on many devices too.

please if You'll find something interesting (sets / registry tweeks) give a reply in this topic...
Custom Scroll Updated to 1.1 (see #2 for download)
This work only with Diamond?? What key I must set for change scroll set in the HD?
it should be working with every sort of hardware that has tflo installed -> htc scroll addon ... just try it...
and then post some rply in this topic
Awesome App
Now all we need is kinetic scrolling. I dont know about other people but I cant stand the old-fashioned scrolling in WM. It's impossible to see stuff go by. Kinetic scrolling just feels more natural, period (i guess thats why it is so popular). Any ideas?
Good looks so far though- keep up the good work!
So does this only work with htc touchflo or will it work with the new scrolling built-in to wm6.5? I don't know of any 6.5 roms that are using touchflo.
Hi,
Liked the app - great way to customze the scrolling. One question/request though. Before my Diamond, I had an MDA Compact running Pointui and really liked the scrolling feature on it. It was a more fluid scroll feature (in my opinion ) as opposed to the flicking action needed with the "iphone" esq scroll. Have linked a utube example for your ref
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Na7k2JfbgG8
Can your application customize the scrolling like this or is it possible to adapt it accordingly?
Thanks

It works with every build in HTC Scroll Addon (see if you have installed htcscroll.dll somehere in memory)
... I did not use 6.5 WM, but I think that microsoft has it's own sollution for finger scrolling, flick gestures and other stuff... if You have TFLO 3D and you can "Flick" in File Explorer You CAN adjust settings (but only some of them) with this program ...

Hi, I haven't htcscroll.dll in my pda, so I downloaded it and copied in windows folder. Need I do others for use your program? Set some key of reg? Other?
You need all TFLO addons... I have no idea is it possible to add HTC finger scrolling without TouchFlo..., maybe sort of porting ... or sth else... sorry no idea... :/
I've TFLO, I have htc touch hd, but manila v2 not manila v3.
love this app. for some reason (or maybe on all touch pros) anything i would scroll it would go directly to the bottom and i couldnt get to stop...this solved my problem! thanks alot
I have just downloaded and started to use Opera 10 Beta. Gotta say that it is a fantastic browser, definitely a step forward from 9.7. There is practically no 'checker board' when browsing pages and it is super smooth, seems to use less memory too so i would recommend it to anyone.
One problem though is that the zoom bar doesn't work on the D2. Not suprised to be honest but does anyone know of a simple fix? I know there was a fix for 9.7 on the LEO ROM's so maybe someone knows if that will work for 10.
Also the browser doesn't rotate anymore when the phone is put in landscape? But agree with #1, looks like an improvement!

Didn't like
I didn't like the beta and uninstalled it because the rotate and zoom didn't work. I have the HTC Pure. But now when I click on the internet button which used to pull up opera, it pulls up internet explorer. How can I switch that back to opera. I can still get to the old opera but through the start menu, so I know it is still on the phone. Is there a customizer to do that?

Which ROM are you using? I'm on Duttys R0 HG Sense 2.1. Would like to get to the bottom of this as it is only accessing certain forums that is causing freezes on my phone.
no problems here. I am writing this message from opera 10. I am using dutty's hgr3
For those that want to add the zoom bar to opera it can be done as follows:
First Create the following registry keys
- Open [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\HTC\SmartTouch\Opera]
- Set String "ClassName"="Opera_MainWndClass"
- Set Dword "Mode"="4"
- Set Dword "WheelCount"="10"
Second Edit the "input.ini" (located in \windows\opera10)
- Change "Right = Zoom in, 10"
- Change "Left = Zoom out, 10"
- Change "Down = Zoom in, 10"
- Change "Up = Zoom out, 10"
restart your device, all should be good

Input.ini is in "Program Files/Opera Mobile 10/Profile"
And it's not so easy to get it working...
yes can you please confirm this works with the hardware zoombar rumpleforeskin? I looked in input.ini (in Program Files/Opera Mobile 10/Profile) And there are many entries for Right= etc. Which ini section should this be added to? In [Browser Widget]?
It's using Mobile View in the settings that breaks this version for me. Desktop view was fine when browsing xda forum.
Also I have seen that Opera 10 doesn't work well setting Mobile view.
I also have another problem, when I active Opera 10 from the internet tab touchflo, it send the following error:
Could not open file "file://localhost/home"
After if I overwrite this address with a correct url, Opera run very well.
Anybody knows how to solve this annoying error?

rumpleforeskin's idea doesn't work, also there is no "Opera" in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\HTC\SmartTouch, there's "Opera Browser", dunno if it makes any difference
Where exactly do I put the Right/Left etc? the input.ini file has more sections, as wineds said.
Opera 10 Beta - lacking Zoom bar functionality not a problem
I've been trying the Opera 10 beta and have found that the lack of zoom bar functionality isn't an issue. Double-clicking on a page automatically zooms the browser to the right size for the body of text under the area double-clicked.
It actually is better that the default installation which I had to manually keep zooming to make the text fit.
Big +1 for this beta version on the TD2.
James.
Opera Mobile 10 is more slick, but a big problem I had with it was that unless Zoom was set to at least 140%, links / text in Portrait mode were too small to click on / read. The lack of adaptive zoom and zoom slider in Opera 10 didn't help either. Well not any more!
Either go into the Opera advanced settings page by typing in "opera:config" in the URL when Opera 10 is running and click on "Fonts" to change the font settings, or just stick the following lines into the "Opera.ini" file inside <Opera 10 Installed Location>\PROFILE\ directory:
Code:
[Fonts]
Form.Button=25,3,0,0,0,0,Tahoma
Form.Input=25,3,0,0,0,0,Tahoma
Form.Text=24,3,0,0,0,0,Courier New
H1=40,5,0,0,0,0,Tahoma
H2=34,5,0,0,0,0,Tahoma
H3=30,5,0,0,0,0,Tahoma
H4=26,5,0,0,0,0,Tahoma
H5=22,5,0,0,0,0,Tahoma
H6=20,5,0,0,0,0,Tahoma
Normal=25,3,0,0,0,0,Tahoma
PRE=23,3,0,0,0,0,Courier New
The 1st number in each line represents the actual font size. Adjust to your liking. The font sizes above let me navigate most websites with Default Zoom @ 100% and the text is very readable.
Note that some webpages will look more misaligned due to the larger fonts, but now at least you won't need to have zoom at 200% to be able to read the text
This probably also works for Opera 9.7 and below, but the issue isn't as important since these versions have a more useful zoom slider and proper font-size adjustment in the Settings menu whereas Opera 10 buries it in the opera:config page.
Hope this helps some of you out there.
Have you also tried to size the browser window to fit on the screen from the "opera:config"? I mean, I tried to set the default zoom to 100% instead of (I believe) 175% as is the default. Looking at a webpage I like to see it all, and THEN I decide what to zoom in on.
I read another post where the guy managed to set the zoom to 100%, I just didn't have any luck doing that on my phone! Maybe I made a mistake, don't know...
Wonder if there might be another place to type in how wide you want to see the pages in default mode...
regards Helle
Thanks for this info
Hello!
I recently purchased an HTC Shift with Windows 7 Home Premium.
The problem with which I am discussing is more related to the fact that the native resolution of 800x480 shift all the opened windows are cut into buttons at the bottom ok, cancel, apply tray. At least this is in some dialog options that do not have the button in the upper right corner of the downsizing, but only the X
All this makes it impossible to use windows ..... unless it increases the max resolution to 1152x864, but with an extreme shrinkage of the characters become unreadable.
I tried to resize the font size enlarged to seven but effortlessly readable windows get bigger enough to return to the initial problem.
I tried various GUIs such as Front face, Thinix, origami, I tried small programs found on the internet as moveme.exe .... but no one pushed me to move up those windows to reveal the riche choice or resize windows above .....!!
Another question about a touch friendly web browser.
Is there a web browser as Fennec (Mobile Firefox) that supports the tap to zoom (but it do not support adobe flash player ... sigh) or a browser plugin which gives you the tap to zoom feature, but also flash player compatible?
Oh i'm gettin' crazy!
Thanks to all
