Vario in the USA. Help! - 8525, TyTN, MDA Vario II, JasJam General

I have moved to the USA and am looking to get my Vodafone Vario up and running again. I'm after some hints from some locals.
I'm well aware of the whole CDMA/GSM situation and have currently a US overpriced T-mobile PAYG SIM.
Are my only real options AT&T/T-mobile, or are there some other small players which piggyback on the large networks?
Ideally I want a plan with unlimited data and push email, but they all seem to demand 2-year contracts for large sums of money, and that doesn't even include a free phone.
I'm not used to this market, in the UK I would only consider signing a 2-year contract if they gave me a free Kaiser and it was a seriously good bundle. In the UK I got my Hermes free on a 1-year contract, and the year before I got an M500(magician) free on a 1-year contract. I'm just shocked that the largest market in the world seems to be such poor value.
Am I missing something?

Wow, didn't know all that. Guess we are just used to 2 yr deals here. Ha i wish i got a free Hermes!!

I went to an AT&T store last night and was even more dismayed.
They wanted:
$39.99 for their cheapest bundled minute package
+ $44.99 for unlimited data and 1500 SMSs
$36 Activation Fee for each new line.
That's what, $85 per month PLUS TAX!!!
Even at the current exchange rates that's awful compared to what I was on!
And for graciously letting me pay them to use their network with my own phone which they did not subsidise one cent of, they want a one year contract!
Also, check out these awful T&Cs:
Airtime and other measured usage are billed in full-minute increments. (Did I travel back in time and per second billing has not been invented yet?)
Unanswered outgoing calls of 30 seconds or longer incur airtime. (WTF!?)
Things you may not do with an "Unlimited" data connection:
WEB CAMERA POSTS OR BROADCASTS, CONTINUOUS JPEG FILE TRANSFERS, AUTOMATIC DATA FEEDS, TELEMETRY APPLICATIONS, PEER-TO-PEER (P2P) FILE SHARING, AUTOMATED FUNCTIONS OR ANY OTHER MACHINE-TO-MACHINE APPLICATIONS; VOICE OVER IP;
UPLOADING, DOWNLOADING OR STREAMING OF VIDEO CONTENT (E.G. MOVIES, TV), MUSIC OR GAMES. FURTHERMORE, PLANS (UNLESS SPECIFICALLY DESIGNATED FOR TETHERING USAGE) CANNOT BE USED FOR ANY APPLICATIONS THAT TETHER THE DEVICE (THROUGH USE OF, INCLUDING WITHOUT LIMITATION, CONNECTION KITS, OTHER PHONE/PDA-TO-COMPUTER ACCESSORIES, BLUETOOTH® OR ANY OTHER WIRELESS TECHNOLOGY) TO LAPTOPS, PCS, OR OTHER EQUIPMENT FOR ANY PURPOSE
Their Mobile Email:
E-mail attachments can not be sent, downloaded, read, or forwarded on the mobile device. Only a paper clip icon appears indicating an attachment. You must view attachments from your PC.
What the hell use is that!
There must be a better solution out there, or is everyone here just used to rolling over and taking it?

T-Mobile UK GPRS problem? W'n'W Plus and Max mainly

I'm not sure, but i want to ask if is anyone experiencing some GPRS problems. I can connect to inet w/o probs, i can browse web...., but i cannot connect to IRC(using wmirc or pirc), ICQ or MSN(im+435) or i have troubles with ftp(resco I tried passive and active mode) Am I tho only one or something similar is happenig to others? I'm using HTC-Uni(latest WM6 build 17....)
IRC is blocked as far as i know, unless you use wnw+ or wnw-max. IM apps arent allowed just as much as VoIP over webnwalk.
i use wnw, on contract dont know if its wnw+. it worked a week ago?suddenly stopped. ****ing t-mobil.(maybe because they had to pay £200 for inconvenience)will call them
ive heard a few reports of this today, seems tmob might be cracking down on it??
I havent been able to use irc / stream music etc.... since getting my contract (about 3 weeks ago)
i cannot use ftp as well, just thinking if those bastards didnt start blocking all ports except for 21, 80, IMAP, SMTP, POP3 :-( if yes i'll chec my contract and will take some legal actions ( I love compensation for inconvinience)
Stuck
Hello everyone, ive been trying to follow these T-mobile UK GPRS problems, related post because im in the same boat. My msn messenger wont work and ive given up, (use webmessenger: works fine though). Yahoo messenger will not allow me to make pc 2 pc call any more but works for chatting.
However strange, i am begining to suspect T-mobile UK as they are obliged to do, are cracking down on VOIP / IRC protocols.
Also need to mention that skype and msn messenger works fine from my SPV M3100 so its does confuse me a bit.
Now im wondering should i delete this post A.S.A.P before some t-mobile network engineer see's it and gets to work ? Im only a student(as good as pensioner: financially) who lives on his own, so wNw MAX is mostly out of the way, might need to get a broadband connection
Don't delete the post, they probably wouldn't care what you say. (A t-mobile dude was telling me to flash a different rom to my xda, so it would be fully compatible with them!)
Unfortuneatly on t-mobile they do not allow IM services on their web 'n' walk internet I think you'd have to find a wifi point.
i read fair usage policy, its not alloved for w'n'w but for w'n'w plus is no mention of IM. i sent them a letter via their web, so i'm awaiting answer

Which WnW package are you on?
btw before people start complaning that they cant get on msn,etc check which WnW package you have
Wnw
WnW Plus
Wnw Max
then check the TnC to see if it allows you to use that service

so if your using skype, msn,etc on the basic WnW and they block that, no point in complaning as you wont have a leg to stand on
i'm on wnw+ so im pissed off. i sesnt them a mail on sund. i do not use skype as viop client only for IM. but i cannot use im+(icq...), mchat, msn messenger, irc. pinkies in callcenter are stupid, they told me that they dont provide supp for 3rd party apps (except the **** in tmo's rom - and U must have extrom installed-so no way to have icon for msn). they sent me back nice letter that they recieved my complain and i will get ans within 5working days. its friday 2:11am and still nothing. BTW IM was reason for wnw2wnw+ upgrade. they are ****ing bastards.

Ditching the home ISP, using XV6800 as modem instead?

I just did a speedtest on my home internet connection, then did the exact same speedtest using my phone as my internet connection, and sinc eI have crappy DSL at home, my phone actually beat it. Home connection was around 1000/400kbps and phone was around 1500/600kbps.
So, my question is, since I never use my internet when I am away from home, can I ditch my home service and use my phone as the modem all the time when I am home?
I have the unlimited data plan from verizon, just added it a week ago...is there a limit? I heard back in 2007 there is a 5GB limit that they dont tell you about, but is there still an unspoken data limit on the unlimited plans? Thanks!!
P.S. - I download like 10-20GB a month of music (all legal through a paid subscrition service) and another 20-30gb a month via IRC transferring large project files when I work at home. Will that much data be a problem?? Will Verizon cut me off?
There is a 5GB limit on VZW's data plans.... So i would either upgrade services or change providers, but that wont help if you are far from the central office for your DSL service.
I spoke to a friend that works at verizon, he explained that after reaching the 5GB mark, there wont be any extra charges (as long as you have the unlimited data plan). But they will slow down the connection to something similar to a dialup speed.
I am not sure of the accuracy on this, but this is what they were instructed to say regarding it. Basically cellphone companies dont want you using their bandwidth to replace their home isp...
I am with sprint now, and so far I don't think they have added the 5GB cap... so I continue to use my cell as my isp, but if I see they slow the connection down, I will have to steal a wifi connection from one of my neighbors!!!
from what ive seen, they just cut your off completely. You dont get any more data that month if you break the 5GB limit. That is if you have their 5GB plan, if you have unlimited they cannot cut you off. period.
Also, i was not made aware of this 5GB landmark they set for unlimited users....
I have unlimited. Verizon does not have a "5gb plan", they only have 10mb and unlimited.

they have a 5GB plan but i think its for wireless broadband and not necessarily for pda/smartphone browsing... i hear much talk about the national carriers moving to the 5GB cap... but I cant find anything solid on the subject...

the 5gb plan is stand alone and apart from your phone service...you can get that if you have a VZcard for your laptop...but as far as "phone data plans" there isnt a 5gb one.

I have considered to move to verizon based on the phone selection... but i pay so much less with sprint... so im sticking to them for now...
All of Verizon plans have a 5GB cap. I believe same with ATT and now soon to be Sprint. You cant run to anyone any more. My home connection is 10MB so going to Rev A VZW is not worth it. I use WIFI at home and VZW every where else.
Only tethered to laptop a few times...once with titan and once with friends 3G TILT... UNCOMPARABLE... took forever on TITAN...couldnt rely/put up with it daily..maby if i had 3g but i dont so I would stick having a seperate ISP

Interesting.
At the office I tether my laptop to my XV-6800... it's faster than my companys' network. I've used it at hotels too. I don't know where you are located, but the places I've used it, it was as fast or faster than the networks I was sitting at.
I have spoken to VZW's tech reps in the past several months, they do have new data plans. BUT, our (or at least my) unlimited data plan is just that: Unlimited.

Im in a NON-EVDO NON REV-A craphole...Everwhere 10 miles around the city I live in has EVDO...just not in the city. But even when I tried with evdo It still wasnt comparable.
When I got service at alltel they asked if I wanted to use as a modem for pc and if I was they wanted to charge an addition 9.99 a month for the service...even with my unlimited plan.... I have always heard that if they start seeing huge data downloads from your account they will try charging for it.....KEYWORD "HEARD"
I am actually having good luck using it as a modem. I still have landline internet thats faster. But for my laptop I use my titan with wifi to send internet to it. Seems okay..with download speeds of 50 kilobytes to 200 kilobytes a second depending where I am downloading from.
My biggest issue with it though is since its getting to summer..my phone is overheating from the strain so I gotta put a fan on it so it don't run out of battery.
I hope we won't be having this conversation in a year once sprint Wimax is available. Your Cable ISP is suppose to be providing wireless Wimax access for less ( I don't think greedy Communistcast will give it away for free). I heard one of the Cable ISP is already doing it in tri-state area. I can't recall their, read in paper few weeks ago. This way hard lined ISP will have fighting chance as oppose to fixed phone versus cellphones...
I seriously cant believe people think about replacing their home connections with their cell phone. I mean the phone is great and it is fast. But how quick we forget at least on verizon unless your paying near 60 a month for just the data plan with the 15 dollars for modem usage rights that we are teathering illegally. I teather my phone all the time with the hacked os its running but I dont abuse the connection I just browse the internet download smaller files and pictures and msg on it. ITs more of a connection for when your out traveling on the road or not at home and need an internet connection. I think its straight abuse of the connection to be pulling through 10 to 20 gigs a month on a cell phone network and its just asking for them to redflag your account and look into how your using all of your data. Id save my big downloading for a cable connection thats what they are designed for.

whoa buddy....you are getting taken to the cleaners, or duped by some customer service rep if they are charging you that....
quote: "60 a month for just the data plan with the 15 dollars for modem usage rights"
The national rate for VZW customers is $29.99 for unlimited data, including the use as a modem. The actual VZW repguy told me that he uses his as a modem to download stuff from rapidshare, and maxes out both his rapidshare premium accounts (which by the way have a 25gb limit every 5 days)...so that is a TON of data.I am here to dispell all the myths that they will cut you off if you use 'X' amount of data, or use it as a modem (which the rep also said many people do, which is fine)
FYI - the stock verizon rom came with internet sharing by the way, so it isnt a ROM hack to be able to use it as a modem, it is part of WM6!
People on here need to stop spreading rumors about how verizon will cut you off, and having limits on the unlimited plan, etc...they do no such thing.

Data Plans and Features: Prohibited Uses.
You may not use our Data Plans and Features for illegal purposes or purposes that infringe upon others’ intellectual property rights, or in a manner that interferes with other users’ service, interferes with the network’s ability to fairly allocate capacity among users, or that otherwise degrades service quality for other users. Examples of prohibited usage include: (i) server devices or host computer applications, including continuous Web camera posts or broadcasts, automatic data feeds, automated machine-to-machine connections, or peer-to-peer (P2P) file-sharing applications that are broadcast to multiple servers or recipients such that they could enable “bots” or similar routines (as set forth in more detail in (iii) below) or otherwise denigrate network capacity or functionality; (ii) as a substitute or backup for private lines or dedicated data connections; (iii) “auto-responders,” “cancel-bots,” or similar automated or manual routines that generate amounts of net traffic that could disrupt net user groups or e-mail use by others; (iv) generating “spam” or unsolicited commercial or bulk e-mail (or activities that facilitate the dissemination of such e-mail); (v) any activity that adversely affects the ability of other users or systems to use either Verizon Wireless’ services or the Internet-based resources of others, including the generation or dissemination of viruses, malware, or “denial of service” attacks; (vi) accessing, or attempting to access without authority, the information, accounts or devices of others, or to penetrate, or attempt to penetrate, Verizon Wireless’ or another entity’s network or systems; or (vii) running software or other devices that maintain continuous active Internet connections when a computer’s connection would otherwise be idle, or “keep alive” functions, unless they adhere to Verizon Wireless’ requirements for such usage, which may be changed from time to time. Ha...did you read that ENTIRE section of what is prohibited? Nowhere in there does it talk about restricting modem use. In fact, it only talks about the most extreme stuff like copyright infringement, bots, using it to HOST a p2p sharing protocol, or using it for security/suveilance services, etc...
The reason they do not address modem usage is because it is 100% ALLOWED!
There is actually a verizon advertisment where a guy is frustrated in an airport and cannot get a wireless connection. He pulls out his WiFi PCMCIA card, throws it in a trash bin, and hits a button on his phone. Verizon is SELLING the fact that you can use their phones as internet connections. For crying out loud, the slogan on the ad was "Internet. Anywhere. Anytime." and it shows the guy still there at night browsing the net, in a dark airport and nobody is around.
I mean obviously they have changed their policy since NOTHING in that paragraph you wrote talks about limiting data usage, and the Verizon Rep specifically told me that there is no 5gb cap anymore, and there hasn't been since November. That case you linked is a year old now. Data usage and plans have evolved a TON in a year...plus, that is when the case was filed...they were suing over something that happened well OVER a year ago, so even more has changed.
Get with it bud Things have changed, no 5gb cap/limit, and unlimited = use however you want as long as it isn't illegal (same as the rules on a home ISP connection)

Help: Would AT&T GoPhone Service with MEdia Net Work with Unlocked Diamond?

Here's the deal: I'm a big fan of prepaid pay-as-you-go contract-less cell phone service. I currently use a T-Mobile ToGo SIM in a Sansung Omnia, and for voice, it works great. Unfortunately, ToGo doesn't currently have a data option. Since I'm in range of a WiFi network 99% of the time, up til now, data hasn't been a problem. However, on a recent trip it would have been nice to occasional check e-mail and browse a web page when no WiFi network was available. So I'm thinking of making a change.
As far as I know AT&T offers the only prepaid plan with data in the US: GoPhone with MEdia Net. Also, since the unlocked HTC Diamond offered through Best Buy happens to support the AT&T 3G bands, I'm thinking of trading my Omnia for a Diamond. (Note: 3G isn't a requirement, I'd be more than happy with Edge speeds.)
My data requirements of MEdia Net are modest. First, I must be able to access my pop3 mail server through MEdia Net, preferably using the Mobile Outlook e-mail client. Last, I need to occasionally browse an arbitrary web page like Google Maps, preferably using the Diamond's default Opera web browser. As you might have guessed, I have no interest in the Internet "services" touted at the AT&T web site.
Searching this forum and AT&T's web site gives the impression all this may be possible, but I'm not convinced. I don't want to call AT&T sales because I doubt they'll give me the information I need.
Please help; any information or even opinion will be appreciated!
Go Phone with Tilt
I have only had a pocket PC for a couple of weeks, but have spent a lot of time reading and testing. Whatever you can do with a Diamond, should be the same with a Tilt. The Diamond is only a faster device and costs more money.
Here is what I am able to do: I put the Sim from my obsolete LG AT&T phone in the Tilt that I bought used on Ebay for $200. My Sim has funds from a $25. per 90 day Go Phone account. With the Tilt's WiFi I access the internet free. With the built-in GPS and google maps, I can track and locate my position. However as google maps requires a continuous internet connection, it keeps saying the connection is lost as I drive around, closing that window when it pops up, keeps things going. I am testing other software that doesn't require a constant connection. But you didn't indicate any interest in GPS.
The voice phone and text messaging works fine. It makes a really nice pocket computer, does everything and when connected to the desk top computer you can easily manipulate files. I bought a double capacity battery for it and it runs everything all day with power left over.
What I can not do is receive instant messages. I never used that service before anyway. If you want internet anywhere, AT&T wants $30. per month for the data plan (media net) and if you want navigation anywhere, that is another $10. per month. I think I understood them to say that these features and not available with a Go Phone plan, but you can ask. A store told me it was and telephone support mentioned it wasn't.
I have my phone configured to never use media net. One forum user made some tests and ran up a bill for a couple hundred dollars real fast with a pre-pay plan. Go Phone or AT&T? I don't recall.
I plan to use the pre-paid MEDia Net sparingly. By some accounts, it's over 100 times more expensive than some equivalent European plans. If someone was using pre-paid like they might use a contract plan, I'm not surprised they'd run up a big bill.
Any way, I'm going to try this since it's costs next to nothing to get a GoPhone SIM with a few minutes; enough to download an e-mail and browse a few web pages if everything goes right.

data sent received volumes

hi
as you can usually see sms volumes in and out or call durations called and received on standard mobile, can you view the current or total data volumes sent/received in the hd2...im sure my reasonable usage contract is going to be challenged this month having just got ny hd2 and cant stop playing with it...thanks
Try this...

Edit:
The developer's website http://www.efficasoft.com/
thanks. ill give that a try
I had a reasonable usage data plan from o2 for 3 or 4 years now.
No problems there and I used all my HTC devices as internet dongle.
Boy do I abuse it however for me it is fair usage I use it fairly for my entertainment.
cool...i'll keep hammering my data usage then...resonably of course
do you keep your data connections open all the time...as im currently turning them off when im done via comms mgr? all my time/weather updates are set to manual

He no, can not be bothered. Auto logon to facebook, youtube, auto download for weather and internet time sync. QuickGPS is also set to download when needed.
All, except quickGPS, have one exception and that is if roaming do not do anything.
Their main problem is skype phone calls (not chat) and if you start downloading torrents or other big files.
As my previous job was mainly away from home for a week and back on weekend at those times I did even get some torrents going but only at night.
O2 are the best for "fair use" though. Most (NB not all!) of the others offer between 512MB and 1GB per month. O2 offer 3GB.
I do about 1-2GB a month, so that's perfect for me. Might start downloading Lost on my phone when it comes back on next month lol

There is no limit on o2?!
I have unlimited web bolt-on. Key word unlimited. However in small text there is a fare usage policy but I always ignore those as fair for one is not so far for other so you can argue that.

Yeah, it's not unlimited. The fair usage policy is what stands. They basically say "it's unlimited if you don't go over a certain amount". You still have to be careful, but at 3gig, I don't think I'll be worrying about it much!

No word of 3gig so maybe we have not the same plan:
2.
Use of the O2 Web & Wi-Fi Bolt On is subject to an excessive usage policy as explained in point 3 below.
3.
The O2 Web & Wi-Fi Bolt On allows you unlimited use of O2 UK's Edge, GPRS, 3G and HSDPA networks, The Cloud's UK Wireless LAN network and the BT Openzone UK Wireless LAN network, for personal internet use and email. All usage must be for your private, personal and non-commercial purposes.
You may not use your SIM Card in any device to allow the continuous streaming of any audio / video content, enable P2P or file sharing or use them in such a way that adversely impacts the service to other O2 customers. If O2 reasonably suspect you are not acting in accordance with this policy O2 reserves the right to impose further charges or disconnect your tariff at any time, having attempted to contact you first.
The fair usage policy is in a seperate document to the t&c for your contract. It mentions fair usage, but then it's up to you to go look for what that means!
We may have different contracts anyway. Who knows!

Web and Wifi - 3Gb

Two different T-Mobile CS people have stated to me that it's the same as they offer for Android phones - 3GB. That's what http://www.coolsmartphone.com/news6340.html were told too.
Nothing in the website terms and conditions to confirm or deny that though.
i bought mine in the t-mobile store (UK). They guy said its definitely 3GB fair usage and if you go over it they normally do not care.....[said a guy came in with a letter from t-mobile saying not to do it again when he used 96GB!!]
The problem is if you have bought yours through a website tht is not t-mobile then you will get the crappy data speed and 1GB limit....so watch out
T-Mobile will send you a text when you use 80% of your 3 gig limit. After you go over the limit you'll be limited to web browsing only during peak hours (4pm - 12am) from memory.
I just called T-mobile, because i had a text message saying im on 80% fair usage policy im like WTF!!?!? ive got free internet booster (even though i know its just for browsing and stuff) .. ive hardly downloaded anything. Im pretty sure most of the time the apps ive downloaded were off marketplace on zune (PC) . I think maybe the odd few times ive downloaded few apps like Hydro thunder from my phone, which may have may have done the damage (i had to due to hard reset and some apps dont automatically load up) . Unfortunately i do not own a wireless router...yet, i have to buy one .
At first i thought t-mobile may have made a mistake, but saw somewhere an app like Hydro Thunder is like 230MB , thats a large file certainly on a phone's data usage. The lady at T-mobile said im on 430MB and 570MB left ...which makes you wonder why the hell do they say ive used 80% in the text message .
I should have not bought my omnia 7 from buymobilephones . I would have had 3GB allowance if went directly with t-mobile
btw how does one find out the size of these apps you download? im shocked Microsoft haven't given us a right click type feature for the windows phone 7 ..that would be such a vital feature. I like to check on the size of pics, apps, movie clips etc ... you want to know the dimensions too like so and so clip is 1280 x 720p etc .

I'm going to get an Omnia7 from T-Mobile directly on their £15/month tarrif with Internet bolt-on. If I am not mistaken that entitles me to 500 MB internet monthly allowance. Si if I exceed those 500 megs of data, I am not charged till the limit of fair usage policy??? Is that limit 3000 MB? I'm not talking for the £25+ tarrifs that were recently changed to include trully unlimited data...
As far as your comment about the right click / properties type of key I totally agree. Over-simplification is not good.

Yeah good idea get it directly from them, they told me if i exceed my fair use policy..they just charge £1 a day after that (when u use data) ..and you can use as much as you want ..until the new month comes and it all refreshes back to the start. Its every start of the month the free data allowance starts. You should get something with at least 1Gb Internet booster , 500mb will go easily. But ideally a router is best so you dont have use the free allowance ..only for situations when your not near your PC.
yeah i wish MS adds that, you need that right click feature ..so you can find out how big apps and other file are
New official T-Mobile UK Data policy
As far as T-Mobile Data allowance is concerned I found the following on their site...
''... If you join T-Mobile before 30 September 2011 and select a 24-month price plan of £25 a month or more, the good news is that there's no fair use policy. Remember that you can only use internet on your phone in the UK and you can't use your phone as a modem (tethering) or use internet on your phone for peer-to-peer file sharing or making internet phone calls...''
Comment: do they block voip packages????
''... If you're choosing any other pay monthly plan (<£25), please see the fair use policy below.
However much you use the internet, you'll never get charged extra
We're the only operator to offer you a fixed price for browsing and emailing on your phone with no limits and no extra charges. Use 3G for getting online on your phone when you're out and about. Never pay more than your monthly fixed price. You can always browse and email with no limits.
Is there an allowance?
You can browse and email as much as you want. There is a 500MB allowance for streaming videos and uploading and downloading files. If you hit this limit during the month, you won't be able to do this stuff again until the next month.
For the best internet on your phone, connect to your home WiFi, so you won't even touch your 500MB allowance.
What about using apps?
Some apps use a normal internet connection, so they will work just like your browsing and email allowance. But there are some apps that use streaming connections, so these will fall into the 500MB allowance...''
So their new fair usage policy discerns between ''normal'' data and ''streaming'' data''. (packet inspection??) Web browsing and email sync fall into normal data category that is unlimited and does not count towards your 500MB download data allowance
When downloading a file off the internet (let's say an app off the MarketPlace), or streaming a movie, you are consuming data from a 500 MB data ''pool''. If you exceed tgis limit, you cannot further download/stream, but you can still continue to have data access for http/browsing data. apps like netflix, vevo, youtube fall into that download data category, I assume.
One question arises, what happens with voip data packages (if there are any voip apps for wp7 for the time being, anyway there is a google voice client I recon)
