Brand New Wing out of box, whats next? - Wing, P4350 General

OK. So I've had my Wing for a week now, it's not unlocked like it said it was on the ebay auction... I'm still waiting to get an unlock code. Apparently my imei was not in t-mobile database, so the unlocker has to get the unlock code from HTC in Taiwan. Anyways, I wanted to know how I would go abouts installing any touch roms. I'm very new to the scene, I know how to soft and hard reset, but if I ever bricked my phone I think I'd lose it and freak out. If anyone has any step by step tips please let me know.
Ps. I dont think my Wing is CID unlocked.. but I could be wrong. Thanks!

There are a couple of Rom's in development at the moment, being made specifically for the wing, but they haven't been perfected... so if you don't have alot of experience with flashing rom's, I would wait until people get them to work flawlessly before you start trying to install them.
Take a look at the HERALD WIKI page to learn more about your device.

Duprade, quick question if you don't mind.
When you put on a new rom (like say...the wing touch it that's being worked on)....
1)Do you have to reinstall all programs you already have on there? And do you have to transfer any contacts you have through outlook over to sim to avoid delete?
2)Do you have to re-do the pagepool fix? I actually did the "Clear Storage" option the other night when I couldn't figure out how to remove something, and I have no idea if it undid the pagepool fix. I installed everything I had again, and am tempted to try the fix again to make sure it's on there, incase the clear storage got rid of it. But I'm not sure if it's gonna delete all my crap if I do that, and also if it might hurt something if it's already done.
PS..I tried installing the minimo which you mentioned in another thread (I love mozilla products), but it wasn't working. Maybe I got the wrong version? It'd show the splash screen, with a loading bar underneath that would fill to about 80% then stop. It also drained my memory down to ridiculous levels (like 0.3 when I quit it).

1. yes. If your contacts are already on sim, whatever good for you, but NEW contacts default to phone, so transfer any contacts that you got after your last hard reset to your sim before hard resetting.
2. Yep. After you install the pagepool fix, you soft reset. Soft resetting retains data.
Don't use minimo. It's terrible. Mini Opera. Or Full opera, but its payware

Well that's annoying, because if you have someone under multiple numbers, then it seperates them with a /m, /h, /w...etc. Also, after you transfer them back to phone, it keeps the sim ones in contacts, so you have duplicates. I tried deleting all of the sim ones again through sim manager, but they pop right back up. Only way that seemed to work was just now when I went in and one by one permanently deleted them from sim (until next time I change things, of course )
2. Yep. After you install the pagepool fix, you soft reset. Soft resetting retains data.
Ok. So after I install the new touch-it (once it works), I do that. Good.
Did the "clear storage" also undo my pagepool? Should I re-do it now? And when you say soft resetting retains data...does that mean if I re-do it now I won't lose all of the stuff I've put on again? Or will the pagepool clear me out?

I'm tempted. Tabbed browsing is key...IE sucks as far as that. Don't know any other advantages/disadvantages as far as mobile versions..this is my first smartphone.

Thanks alot for your response.
PS....this being my first smartphone, I absolutely love it. Also love that there are many people that mod and help make it better. Now if only I could figure out the damn thing about myfaves not showing in my call history and for missed calls...

1. If you use a third party contact manager (PocketCM?) only phone contacts will show. Dunno why, i guess we havent quite mastered sim access
2. yep. reapply, soft reset. no data loss.
full opera has tabbed browsing. go buy it. well worth it

Thanks. I will have to take a look at that PocketCM. I thought the contacts were fine the way they were, though I was looking at adding that ipod style scrolling. Is pocketCM better than the default contact manager?
I re-did the pagepool thing as well, just to be sure.
As far as opera..how much does it cost? And where do I go to make sure I get the right version? I'd definitely be interested in it.

Thanks for the links. EDIT - Mines unlocked!!! I'm happy as hell. Im selling my Siemens SK65 on ebay now. =)))

VJBigPhone, T-Mobile Videobutton on MDAPro

Hi all,
I am aware about all the other threads but yet could not get across some nonsense on my MDA Pro.
I went back to the t-Mobile ROM because of german support on many features but running ozVGA now successfully with two exceptions:
1. Each time I reset the device, I have to reinstall vjbigphone (0.91) and re-run the .exe to get my dialer back to full screen. VJ did a real got job, but I hope anyone coud tell me, what could be wrong?
2. Does anyone know, how to get rid of the stupid and ugly video-button in the t-mobile dialer? I replaced all BMPs with the one's from iMate, but yet video is the stupid grey. flat button.
Once this is solved, I will write down exactly how to get really the tiny machine running with the best tools for best results.
Greetings
ndee
ndee: why do you have to re-install the app?
After a soft reset, what happens when you choose the "load and fix" option from the tray?
I am hoping to spend some time on this app over the next few days. Many apps being fixed, one a at time...
V
Hi Vijay,
when I softreset, everything on the phone is back to the tiny layout. Even though I "load and fix".
Only workaraound I figured out is reinstall :-(
ndee
Strange - I know we spoke about this before, but then, after you re-install it works?
Have you tried not loading VJBigPhone, soft reset, load the phone (eg press green key, so you can see Tiny buttons) and then load VJBigPhone. Does that make any difference? Re-installing shouldn't make any difference, it doesn't load any settings etc from the registry etc...
v
I have some similiar problems. I'm using also the neweset german ROM on my MDA Pro and after a soft reset I don't have to reinstall the app, but I have to close it and restart it again to gain access to the phone application. Without close VJBigPhone nothing happens, after starting the application again everything works fine (till the next soft reset, which happens every morning after the daily backup)
Wolfgang
I have an idea what might be the problem then.
The code was modified a while back to try to find the "phone" program without you having to specify the name in your own language (eg "telefon" instead of "phone"). However, it's possible that if the phone isn't found, it's getting confused. I'll try to look at the code again soon.
I'm not writing any new programs for a while while I do updates to all the old stuff
V
out of sudden, I dont need to reinstall anymore. Just after reset, I run vjbigphoneres and phone comes up full screen. Dont know what I did and how long it will last - keep you informed though - thx so far.
Any solution for the ugly video button of TM insight?
ndee
TM Button: I know you've spoken about it for a while, but I've got no experience of it, I don't really use my Universal I think someone (you?) posted one before, but could you send me a screenshot if you've got appropriate software, and if you have them, a zip of your extended rom?

Help Required Removing GAY Tmobile colours on Phone etc...

I installed the tmob rom today to find that I'd obviously lost the very nice 3d phone dialler from the O2 settings. I tried the patches on the site which just screwed up the dialler totally.. had to do a hard reset to get the dialler back to normallity again.. whats the best way to re-skin the dialler and get rid of the Tmob branding crap? At least with the O2 Rom you could choose corporate mode...
I think (which is sometimes dangerous) that you need to unlock the extended rom and pick and choose your cabs to get the customisations you want without the customisations you dont want.
I did it on mine to get rid of the tmobile branding without loosing the gps / phone settings etc. Ive never used an 02 rom though so dont know whats what with that.

Try Hard-reset *WARNING ALL DATA WILL BE LOST*
Give a Soft-reset just before (HKLM/.../Runonce/.branding crap.) goes into action.
In other words there's a package that runs after reinstalling/covering from Hard-reset on your PINKYWINKY device, you should try to make
a Soft-retard before it starts.
Have fun Greetings, Credits goes to Pippo
P.s. Try writing down first the gprs/wifi/mms settings by your branding crap supplier in WINKYPINKY.
do you know which cab this is, I could easily remove it from the extended rom then do a hard reset...
Nah - I just fluked it with my Rom. Removed everything that looked from the title like it was to do with UI tweeks and hey presto the thing still worked but without the crap. I guess the worst that can happen with a bit of experimentation is you dont install something it needs so have to hard reset a few times while you identify the correct culprit.

Why do people keep upgrading ROMS?

I know I am going to cause some trouble by asking this but why?
On taking my new Orange SPV M600 out of the box, I have to agree a bit sluggish, but this was mainly due to Windows.
After a little tweaking with the registry and some third party software it is now flying.
I originally thought that putting third party software over the top of the system would slow it even more, but know, the opposite was true. Using the standard windows task bar and start menu was dreadful. I tried a number of third party softwares such as True Toolbar, Handyswitcher etc, finally settling on Wisbar deluxe.
Everything now opens as soon as it is selected no nasty lag like windows. With some skinning and removal of Customised Today the phone looks great and is performing great. That is apart from my wired hands free. I can now answer and close calls with the button, but it does not activate voice dial when pressed, so I can't dial out hands free. All prevoius phones, Nokia and SE did this no problem, so why not this phone?
Anyway, back to the point of ROMS, why keep flashing?
I just got me one of those SPV M600 things and its not that slow, but I havent added anything else to it yet. Would you care to elaborate on "registry tweaks"? Im new to XDA/phones and havent started messing about yet.
I can not remember all of the tweaks I used, but there is a big section somewhere in here listing them. I have them somewhere on the computer but my filing is a mess and I can't remember what I called the text file or where I put it.
Basically the tweaks are just simple things like increasing cache size for fonts, programs etc. Moving file storage off main memory to SD card, disabling and enabling etc. It is claimed by doing this that the system will speed up a little. I am not sure if any of these actually did anything or if it is just down to Wisbar. All I can say is that when I click on a program it fires up straight away, before it could take a second or two.

Actually, the rule about flashing is: If it's not broken don't fix it.
People upgrade because they want to get rid of bugs or add features like AKU 2.0 that includes push mail and some other stuff.
Also some brands are better that others in some ways, and worse in other ways. There are several ROMs for the Prophet: Dopod, i-mate, Qtek, Orange. Finally some people cook their own ROMs throwing out useless stuff and adding apps they 'must have'.
All in all if you are pleased with your phone there is no need to change the ROM. When I got my Jamin it had the i-mate 1.xx ROM so I upgraded to 2.13 to get the AKU 2.0 goodies.
I always belive the latest is the greatest, even if its not. I still run the latest. While the release notes say "Added this, fixed that" they also contain a lot of fixes and changes not documented.
Hi all.
Thats actually a very good question. From my experience you dont really need to change anything. Maybe as you said some registry tweaking or some basic settings. However as someone already said, the golden rule should be if it is not broken dont try to fix it.
On the other hand you might want to change things with no reason, just because you can.. and I have to admit that it is hard not to do. Then you have to make sure that you know what you are doing cause otherwise you might end up spending your day in forums try to fix whatever you &^%$ up..
Take care.
Thanks for the replies.
I have to admit, when I first got the phone I started tweaking, then I found this forum and others. Once I discovered unlocking and flashing ROMS, I was very close to doing it. Then I remembered what I used to be like on my PC. With old systems like Win ME, I used to spend about 70% of my time tweaking and fixing, and only 30% actually using the damn thing. Not what I want out of a phone.
Just by messing around with skins, I have already managed to lose my phone dialer all together, I was left with a blank screen, so I had a phone that could not phone. I have it nicely skinned and running now, but I was never able to get the Orange dialer back.
Guess the only time I will flash my ROM is when there is a genuine update and it is covered by warranty, that way if the ROM is bad, Orange can give me another phone.
Thanks
I look at it same way as i look at windows.
My windows isn't broke but I always use Windows Update.
Why do YOU update windows, if you do at all. I guess im not sure if this is advisable, but that's just the way i do it.
Regarding upgrading ROM, MOST of the time, it makes the device faster and adds more features ( i never install extended ROM ) so I always upgrade when there is a new one.
I've downgraded ONCE. And only the RADIO because 1.11 didn't agree with my device.
There are ways to Backup the device, change to a different BRAND/VERISON of ROM then restore the backup. This makes changing ROM very easy.
Anyway, I have nothing better to do with my time so i upgrade whenever a new ROM comes out.
Sorry to but in again but I simply must disagree with the Windows update analogy.
I have my PC set to auto update as well, but Windows XP runs updates in the background and doesn't delete you data in the process.
ROM upgrade means HARD RESET, and unless you have a good backup a long restore process.
Also there is the danger of communication / power interrupt during the flashing and a bricked device as a result.
Finlay, like with your radio ROM, some OS updates have new bugs as well as fixes for the old.
But I do wish it was as simple as updating windows - then I would say, update away, couldn't hurt.
My analogy was based only on the reason for updating, not the process itself that you are stating.
What I mean is if your windows works, why update?.... This thinking... Not the "ritual"...
Sorry i did not explain that clearly. The guy just asked why update if you are content with what you have.... It has nothing to do with "I would update only if the process were simpler" like what you stated.
Sorry for the misunderstanding
I upgrade because I can cook my own ROM with better application suite

Because it's full of holes and most of the updates are plugging them.
I think the main point is you dont have to upgrade, you can if you want, its a matter of choice.
I like to always update, some like to keep the same and have never hard reset in their life. Im on my 9th this week :S but it is a new device and im still figuring it all out.

Hmm, then i guess your advice to NewSPV is to upgrade.
Me too, as i said in earlier post, i will always upgrade to the newest ROM, then just downgrade if i don't like the changes. Unfortunately it isn't as easy to downgrade from Windows SP2 hehehe

I was talking about Windows, not WM5.
My phone came shipped with an AKU2 rom and it's fine - after a little tweaking. I'm not going to risk bricking my pride and joy with a rom upgrade - as so many people have done already on this forum.
Can anyone name some good places to read about how to flash your device with a new ROM?
Also, I was wondering about what the "extended ROM" is. Is it basically partitioning part of your storage card for use as "internal memory" ?
Thanks for the info guys!

Look at the top left of this very page and you will see a link to the wiki section of this site. How to flash is in there.
The extended rom is where the operator adds thier own customisations (over and above what M$ provide) to the device, for example Orange and O2 add their own options in there and they install when the device is powered up for the first time or when it's hard reset. If you get access to the extended rom (again look in the wiki) you can manipulate what gets installed and if you're really clever, add some of your own stuff.
Don't ask me how to do these things as I have not tried myself, the risk of bricking the device is too great for my liking.
cool, thanks paul

Actually, it is virtually impossible to brick your device by manipulating the contents of the extended ROM. It is only accessed once, during first boot, and event that can be avoided by quickly soft resetting the device.
Basically it acts exactly like "file store" used to on WM 2003 devices, the only difference being it is hidden so ordinary users won't get rid of the operator junk.
In my case it was very nice of i-mate to provide various goodies there like voice dial (should be in ROM) anti virus (not only useless but damaging crap) Skype (could have just downloaded from their site, but nice thought) and backgammon (toys are always welcome).
But now ofter the initial installation it makes all the sense in the world to save these cabs (9MB~) to my PC and have extra 10 MB storage on the device.

Unlock Extended Rom

Hi there
I've just got my shiny new Touch HD. Wow - what an upgrade to my Orbit 1 (don't laugh). I loved my Orbit but this is so much better. It's not revolutionary, but everything has evolved so well i.e. the big screen, no horrible frame around the screen, USB 2 connection, love the Drive mode thingi when you plug it to your computer ect.
Only problem is I can't get TomTom to work - I'll sort that out later...
Now to the question - how do you unlock the extended rom (I think that what they call it)? I want to prevent the applications from installing i.e. TouchFlo Home Plugin after a hard reset. I find the combination of SPB Pocket Plus 4 Tabs, Today Agenda (and a few other apps.) a much better combination for me.
Hope someone can help.
Anis
Did you try a soft reset when the waiting screen pops up after a hard reset?
Why dont you just uncheck TouchFlo in Settings-Today?
Thanks for the replies.
Ideally I wouldn't want unwanted apps to install. I know it's a fast device but I like to have a clean system.
I could reset the device when it's about the install everything (don't even know how to reset) however I want to keep certain things like the Black HTC theme and a few other things.

I just tried this last night and tried at multiple stages... and no matter what it insisted on installing all the bloatware. Any idea what I might be doing incorrectly?
When you say "wait screen" - do you mean the initial WinMo v6.1 green-splash screen, or the same display with "Please wait while we [something] for first time use"? I also tried at the Home screen before the customization begins, and while it was running... all still ended up with the software being installed. :/
I've read some great posts (here and Howard Forums) about using Total Commander and entering "\Extended Rom\" but that doesnt open anything on my device. Does that area need to be unlocked?
Thanks for any tips!
I think you need a custom Rom without all of the applications. I had one on my Omnia.
hmm...
typing "\Extended_Rom\" in total commander does not work.
those registry which hide/unhide and lock/unlock extended rom are not there too.
check the wiki, nothing about extended rom or customed rom which is meant for Service Provider specific.
Or is it because the HD I am having is tied to 1 provider, but it is already SIM unlocked which can use other providers SIM.
The original rom is lag, very lag, lots of rubbish in "\windows\" directory beside M$ original files.
How are the cooked roms around in the forum?

+1 for this plan. I'm running a lighter custom 6.5 rom (NRG) with none of the startup ui's. I've loaded Mobile shell#3 and it works very well. Quickest combo I've found so far for snappy-ness and speed. Battery life is fine with it. Try diff light roms without the startup bloatware and you may find something that you like.

Can someone help me pleeze?

I dont know how to flash roms or tweak any of these replies can someone help me please? I tried Custom window home tabs app but it got rid of the home screen so i took it out.. please someone help me .... i have yahoo, aim and msn messenger email or just reply on here ? thanks guys
try HR-hard reset.
1.turn your phone off
2.press and hold volume up&down buttons same time and turn your phone on
it will reset and restore it to the factory settings
This should help
I was in the same position 4 months ago... it's a steep learning curve!
In no particular order:
1. Get your phone and PC hooked up with activesync.
2. Learn how '.cab' files work - you basically just transfer them to your phone (I use activesync) and run them to install various things.
3. Get Resco Registry - this is a registry explorer which I find very intuitive and useful for changing registry values.
4. Have a look around this site, notably the tweaks threads, and see what you like.
5. When you are comfortable with the handset, look into upgrading your ROM. I started on Vodafone 1.43 ROM, but have since upgraded to Vodafone 1.66 ROM. It is very easy to upgrade to official ROMs (at least it was for Vodafone) - I image the manufacturers will give you a step-by-step guide.
6. Get Cookie's Home Tab!
Can you tell what ROM/Radio/Manila version you are currently on?
(Go to settings/about phone/software information)

I don't know where you got the idea that most phones are freezing, because if that was the issue this phone would not be nearly as popular as it is.
* If you got the phone from your provider go to them.
* Try a hard reset, make no changes (tweaks, software installs) and see if the problem is gone. If so then something you did is causing the problem.
* Find a stable ROM in the development forum and learn to flash, it's very easy.
