Well I only got the phone yesterday and I've already had it with it.
I upgraded the ROM to 1.12 no probs, but the voice quality is really poor, the bluetooth headset (BlueTrek G2) is even worse, dialling with one hand is impossible. They really need to work on the phone functions for these devices. I can't use this for my work phone, it is unreliable and has a worse signal reception than other phones. CallerID with Photo ID doesn't work, the screen keeps turing on for no reasin when in your pocket so when you take it out you end up pressing the screen and doing something you didn't want to do. I regret buying this after one days use. I will be putting it back up on eBay soon.

I think your disappointment comes from your expectations: you didn't buy a mobile phone. What you got is a PDA with embedded phone features. Nothing more, nothing less.
I used to have a MyPal A620 and (lately) a Nokia 6630. That was a real pain in the shadowed zone ! Two devices, two chargers, two car holders...
Now I still have a PDA (that is what I badly need) plus a GSM phone in one single device... no need to carry the Nokia mobile with me anymore.
If what you're looking for is a mobile, drop the Magician and go for a TRUE phone. It is understood that the phone section could be largely improved but at the end of the day I can live with it .

I love my Magician and I have no complaint at all about it.
Since November last year, I have bought 6 units one after another - four for my family members and two for my assistants at work.
On each of these 6 units:
- the voice quality is superb
- the bluetooth handset with Windows Mobile logo on it supplied by Microsoft as a free promotional item is fantastic
- I read my manual and understand how to use speed-dial with one hand
- I read my manual and have no problem using selected photos and ringtone through Caller ID
- I read my manual and understand there is such a function as "button lock" to stop accidental switching on of the pocket pc
- the phone is highly reliable and the reception signal is better than any mobile I have ever used.

I think you need to give it more time.Learn how to use it! :wink: There are settings in there to stop the screen coming on unless you press the power button so it never really comes on.Phone quality could be better but comparing to a house phone,have you ever hear a mobile phone of any description with REALLY good sound quality?I haven't and i've had my fair share!It's no worse no better than any other on the market as a phone-as a device it's nothing short of amazing.Pm me if you want a program to make dialling easier :wink:

Try another Radio Stack like the 1.11. Some people report reception problems only with the latest (1.12) Radio stack.
About your problem with the screen not being locked when the Magician is in your pocket: Get MortSaver (free software), configure it correctly with its options and assign it to one of your hardware buttons. This locks the screen but you can still see some basic information, like SMS notifications, time battery and so on. This basically substitutes a lock function of a mobile phone.
When you got used to the possibilities of this great device and shipped around all these little problems you'll get (trust me, there are tons), you will never want to get back to a "normal" mobile phone. Show me only one mobile phone that does all of the following:
Works as remote control for all your devices (RemoteControl 2)
Can control your PC via Bluetooth (Pebbles)
A good music MP3 player with great sound (MortPlayer)
Is a video player with good video quality, even DivX(BetaPlayer, Media Player)
Plays great 3D games (Tomb Raider, Flux Challenge ...)
Works as a USB stick (CardExport 2)
Can be extended with WLan feature (Sandisk Wifi SD card)
Can be used for navigation (TomTom 5 + BT GPS)
Has a real internet browser, a great calendar (PocketBreeze)
And all this more reliably than the magician does? Come back to earth! All these features have the price of more bugs, more workarounds and more additional software that is needed. But to almost every problem, you will find an appropriate solution in this forum and with additional software (SpriteBackup, SK Tools, SPB Pocket Plus, Resco Explorer, Check Notifications, PocketZenPhone...)
Software like PhonePad makes one hand use possible and almost as good as with a mobile phone.

I will try some of your comments but don't expect to have to pay for additional software to use the device!
I have already set the device to lock the buttons so I only press the power button to turn the screen on, but if I receive a SMS etc.. the screen come on in my pocket. There is no way to stop this.
Audio wise, people I have called say it sounds like I am in a fish bowl !
As for the web browser, I tried to reply to this thread and it wouldn't let me login to the site, but I could browse the forums just not reply.
I have installed MortSaver as per your recommendation, there are no options to configure in it. How do I configure it?

Dont let anyone fool you: the audio quality of this phone is horrible and unacceptable. This is a known problem and audio ROM updates/patches will not help you.
I bought one earlier this year, it sucked. I complained, got a brand new replacement this week with ROM 1.11WWE - the audio still sucks.
You need to return the phone. If you are within the return period of your seller - do so ASAP. If you live in the UK, be aware that under UK consumer laws you can return this device as "not fit for purpose", especially within the first six months of purchase. During that period, he onus is on the seller to prove that the device is fit - and a phone sold via subsidy from phone companies would HAVE to have proper audio quality - which this device does simply not.

You are not obligated to keep it. If you cannot handle tha device than just sell it and be happy

The extra software is not needed to make the phone work. It works, as you also confirmed. It makes it better than any phone you can get at the moment! That's worth the price.
MortSave has a link to its options in the start menu. I configured it that it automatically turns off the phone, lets notification popups go through and can only be turned on by the power button. It completely protects the screen when SMS etc. go in - like locks for mobile phones.
The web browser: This is the most complete built in web browser you can get in a phone. Tell me about a better one! Nokia? Motorola?

Use the Button Lock feature!
For the Screen, use the Button Lock feature in System Settings
From your Magician, START > SETTINGS > SYSTEM tab, select BUTTON LOCK, and select LOCK ALL BUTTONS EXCEPT POWER BUTTON.
For the audio problem, i guess you might have to get your Magician serviced since it is still under warranty or get a replacement. Its not worth that you pay that much and still have problems with your new Magician. There could be another reason for your audio problems, the signal strength in your area, the weather at that particular day and the location from which you called that day.
Yes the Magician and for that matter all PDA's lack advance phone features that you find in Nokia or other phones, dont loose hope, in the future maybe someone will take initiative to bring to you all those features too.

Why are people always saying that the phone is crap? At least I never really had problems regarding reception and sound quality. Maybe the latest phone stack is not the best - well, just downgrade it.
Regarding the usability of a phone, I even prefer to dial with my magician.
I have to do the following to call someone:
1. Turn it on (kill MortSaver if active -> I have to press the corresponding button)
2. Press the Contacts button and go to the contact I want to call via pressing up or down (holding gives me the alphabet -> very fast)
3. Press right or left to select the number I want to call for that contact (mobile, home or even email) and press the green button to call
In my opinion, a Nokia isn't as easy to use when calling someone.

Heres what I have to do.
Press voice command button
say "call John"
it says "call john?" back
I say yes and it dials
Too easy if you ask me!

I also use voice command for contacts. When I want to call someone who's not saved in the contacts, I press that green telephone button and dial the number using the virtual keypad. This may sound stupid, BUT CAN IT BE ANY EASIER THAN THIS?
And for everyone's sake, stop complaining about the Magician not having a keypad like other phones, and it's so much easier on Nokia's, bla bla bla ...
If you want a PDA/Phone, the Magician is pretty much the best you can get. If you want a mobile phone, get a bloody mobile phone!

Because the quality control on this model is crap.
When I returned my jam for warranty repair (SIX separate problems it had), the customer service rep from the vendor that sold it said to me (and I quote), "Yes, we aware - we have had a lot of complaints about sound quality and defects on this phone".
Phone stack is not the issue, nor is ROM. The sound quality and speaker defects that showed up on my brand new Jam in Feb (WWE 1.01) were exactly the same problems on the replacement Jam I got last week (WWW 1.11). So anyone discussing "radio stack" or "ROM" is just leading you on a wild goose chase.
The phone is not well made. Period. That is why there are complaints.

For something that does just about everything I think i'll settle for the sound quality,after all it isn't really THAT bad.I've had worse.I'd rather have this device than a 7230 or something like that so it's not a bad trade off for all the benefits

I think we just have to stop generalising here. The HTC Magician is selling very very well in most countires, irrispective of the brand or carrier selling it.
Yes, some people found a porblem with the sound quality, but most of us here didn't. Or at least not to the extent of considering returning it back. Mind you, HTC design and produce models for HP, Motorola amongst others so they must know something about quality.
Unfortunately, it's too early for the Magician to have some serious competition. The only reasonable contender is the E-TEN M500. And that's still a bit "chunkier" that I would I hope for!
Some people might not be ready to be early adopters of such a "revolution" in mobile technology.
Such people, I think, should settle for a traditional conservative device!

That is exactly why this kind of lax quality is not acceptable. Its not like they are a newbie - who has not made this type of product before. They are a near-monopoly in the PPC phone market i.e they have a huge experience curve. And audio is not exactly esoteric technology for a company in the phone business.
Its one thing for people to try to pass the problems off as a few people complaining. But when the people out there in the market selling the thing willingly admit that there is a problem with sound and speaker quality - its best to stop dreaming up excuses.

From the posts, it look like some people get unstable magician while other don't. I do agreed that magician is the among top ppc model because of the design which is small like ordinary mobile phone but with a capabilty of pda & phone. Many of pda user change to magician in order to avoid bringing 2 devices at the same time.
It is HTC and their partner responsibility to ensure their product are not made to meet the demand/order without any standard quality control.

Well, I have NO audio problems with my HTC Magician device at all (O2 Xda II mini brand running on Vodafone Australia). Sound quality on my end is perfect and I have asked a number of people I speak with if they have any trouble hearing me and they have said there is no problem at all.
I do feel that the speakerphone is a little underpowered - in quieter environments it is fine but at medium noise level I struggle to hear the other person. I can live with that.
This is simply the best device I have owned.

Does universal works as a phone nicely ?

Is it true that you have to do the flip-and-rotate dance everytime, when you have to receive the call(or make the call) & when you dont want to use the speakerphone ??

I leave my phone in the closed clam position, got Microsoft Voice which tells me who's calling, so all I have to do is push the red or green on the side to ignore/answer the call...

but what if you are in laptop/clamshell mode?
then do u have to do the flip and rotate dance?

If you are laptop/clamshell mode, you can just answer with the buttons on the hinge, and answer the call with it shut. You probably wouldn't want it unnecessarily rotated, since you'll get face grease on your screen.
If you want to see who's calling, a quick lift and shut is all you need.

I can't speak for anyone else, but I can tell you that my experience thus far has been really ****ty as far as using this unit as a phone. the reason I say this, is that despite having updated my unit to the latest ROM upgrade , I'm still experiencing missed calls!
This despite my repeated attempts at contacting the clowns at the live online service at imate. Their email service has been better, but has yet to offer resolution to this immense problem. I say immense b/c I have paid around a grand for a pda with a phone which is completely unreliable as a phone.
Bear in mind, this is my imate experience.

I have never had any problem with the phone. But I have taken a couple of actions:
1. Disable the video phone component, it is bloaty and if you dont use video phones saves 3mb of operating RAM
2. I extended the time it takes to go through to voice mail from 10 seconds to 30 seconds
3. I dont vet any calls, if available, I just answer from the hinge whilst close, so I dont do any flipping to see first
4. My phone always answers at the beginning of the second ring, that with a 30 seconds to voice mail works fine
5. I never let my phone go below 15mb of available ram so it doesnt slow down.
So as a phone, its fine, as a pda its brilliant.

I paid $1500 AUD, about $1100 USD.
I have always bought my phone outright for an unlocked phone that is not dependent or tied into a phone network.
Plus there are extended taxation benefits....

I love mine as a phone, best reception on both ends I have ever found with a phone.
Like everyones said, you can essentially answer a call 4 ways.
1. Default (clamshell shut)
2. Open it and flip it to portrait mode
3. Open it and use it in laptop mode w/speaker phone
4. Bluetooth headset.
personally the idea of Microsoft Voice Command sounds good cos I like to know whos calling, have it tell me would be pleasent
In any case, despite the ringtone not kicking in till the end of the second ring, I have scarecely missed a call. Actually short of not having the phone in an audible radius of me I dont think I have missed a call.
Its always good to have system memory but I dont notice a change in the phone service when my ram dips below 15mb.

The answer to your question is yes. You can answer the phone with the clamshell shut.
Cons:
You will not be able to see who is calling.
You will need bluetooth or wired headset to answer the phone.
Caller ID numbers are available but not the caller name on Bluetooth devices like the BT800.
Personally, I use my Qtek 9000 more as a PDA than a phone.
It's a much better PDA than it is a phone. The keyboard and the screen on the Universal are the main reason why I bought it.
My advise, if you're planning on using it more as a phone than a PDA, then consider other devices. As a phone, it's heavy and bulky. As a PDA, I can only sing praises (except for the occasional soft resets that I have to do).
FYI, here are the main uses that I use the Universal for:
1). Streaming music while I'm driving
2). Watching avi files while I'm on break
3). Daily planner
4). Going online to check on info
5). GPS device with software and an external bluetooth GPS receiver
6). MSN messenger while I'm on road trips

I don't know how much you'll be paying for the Universal. I did pay a lot for it (since it's not available in the US with any cellular companies) but I consider one of the best investments I've made in a PDA/Phone.

Incorrect, the phone will answer perfectly well if you just pick it up and press the green button on the hinge. The three holes on the right of the case are for the sound to come through and the mic is at the bottom on the left of the keyboard.
This is a well thought out device.
If you have personalised ringtones for most of your contacts you should have a pretty good idea of who is calling anyway.

Or... Get Microsoft Voice 1.5, and the fantastic patch by R. Works A1 on mine, I keep the phone clam shut in a zip case. And get a "Call from X" loud and clear telling me who's calling... no need to open or owt, just red/green on the hinge... fantastic...

Not surprising. I am fairly certain the cell carriers have to give access to the datastream, and its not OS dependent. Any phone authorized on the carriers network is a potential microphone.

TBH when I hear something on fox news without even any squeak of an indication of a source; I tend to take it with an even bigger pinch of salt than I take the mainstream corporate media in general (that's a lot of salt.)

Phone needs to have gps equipped in the phone..But it can...why i know this.. i know someone and not a friend of a friend that was tapped by local atf agents thru his cellphone... Luckily for him he lived out of service. Usually when they say gps enabled phone... They're triangulating between three towers hence triang... Anyway from what i thought the mda doesnt not have a gps chip in it so were safe.. Unless im retarted and then i was right about everything until the last statement...

Actually, they don't need to triangulate on a gps-equipped phone. If they have your cell number, they can work with your provider and you can be triangulated based upon your signal strength and proximity between 3 cell towers. GPS has nothing to do with that.

Yep, my brothers a cop and they tracked a murder suspect through his cell phone and it was just a regualar cell phone. It's the same way that if you dial 911 they can track you to within like 10 feet of your location if I remember right, it might be even closer than that. If you have a cell phone, then they can track you if they need to. The only way to get around it is to not have any service at all or to turn your phone completely off.
By the way, they have to get a court order to do that, well that is unless you work for Bush's homeland security and then I guess you can do whatever you want whenever you want.

all cell phones sold in the US as of 1/1/06 have to be equiped with a gps chip that can be activated by your service provider or emergency services. i worked in cell phone sales when this law took effect.

i think that you are all little bit paranoid and would actually love that this can be true but it can't.
It's easy ...how the f can they locate a turned off phone when the network can't find it..cos it's turned off, right ?
In order to activate the microphone and send pretty big amounts of data, that would be impossible if you have no network coverage....remember, the phone is off. Maybe they can radio control the remote mic in order to turn on ...but still...really really hard to swallow.
And one more thing...why the hell would the us gov would spend that kind of cash to listen to your calls ? Stupid is one thing but this is totally a waste of money...so don't worry guys. The mob phones that they were talking...they can exist but only if made custom.

UK Listening
A technician i met from BT ages ago mentioned this wasy possible and used quite often even more so now.

Triangulating on your phone location, that very well possible. Getting a normal phone to send signal when it is off, is rather.. technological impossible. From what it seems, the only way these FBI is able to do that is to swap your phone with a modified version (e.g. like the movie 'Enemy of the State').
However, if you are REALLY paranoid, you can do a simple test. For a mobile phone to send any major signal out, it will causes big interference. Example, putting it next to a speaker, a TV, and it will give your speaker / TV some form of distortion. If your phone where to be sending out any form of signal, you ought to able to detect it in such way.
As how to activate the microphone when the phone is off, that's another story. The best possible way to do this, without being very obvious, is to act passively, like an old fashion pager, that sits and receive instructions. However, to do this, one will need a hardware that is switch on, on this *modified* phone. If your phone is authentic, then it needs to be done if on any exploitable bug within the phone firmware, and that ought to be phone specific.
Conclusion, it will be safe for most of us. Anyway, I would wish this technology is real, and if that's case, all those terrorist will have been caught very easy.

My question is if the phone is really completely off when it's powered down. Has anyone measured to see if there is any battery drain while the phone is powered off? If there's none, then there wouldn't really be a way that I can think of for this to be possible. If there is a drain, then it gets closer to the realm of possibility.
I think I'd be a bit careful with the idea of giving up freedoms and liberties for the illusion of security. It's a good idea to be critical of any Government asking their citizens to give them up for any reason. In a perfect world, only terrorists and "bad guys" would be negatively affected, unfortunately innocent people always end up being caught in the crossfire.

You could easily tell though because you think what happens when you turn wifi on your battery goes down so fast its the same when there listening in cause your phone is sending and recieving data all the time. The tracking technology has been around for quite a bit theres a public version for parents to track the kids and stuff but they cant track them when the phone is off.

Uhm ... News like this can see in Austria too ... but its more like Hacked Blue Tooth Headsets they use for Spying. If FBI switch you Phone to any Spymode ... the Batterie Drain is very high!

after installation you can call the phone and use the mic to listen what is said in the neighbourhood.

work around for bluetooth headset in flight-mode?

Excuse the noobness but I did search and only came up with 4 results and none answered my question? Is there a work around to be able to listen to my S9's bluetooth stereo headset on my ATT 8525 while in flight?

um flight mode is for turning ALL RF off. including BT. it could interfere with the flight systems and send you all to a firey death.

The other solution (once "approved devices are allowed" is to just turn off the phone in comm manager and not turn off the bluetooth (Yes, it requires two actions instead of the easier "flight mode" option, which turns off all RF transmissions from your phone).

It's actually a myth that electronic devices could screw up the aircraft. The FAA is actually worried that the aircraft's radar could screw up electronic devices. Yes, the problem is the other way around.
In any case, flight mode turns off everything. Just go into the comm manager and turn bluetooth on separately.

Actually the radar part is only if the CE is placed in a lobe of the radar signal.
But I can say with 100% personal experience that a phone can cause issues with navigational equipment.
Not sure where you got your info from Doom, but I am a Part-121 pilot. I have heard of people actually be arrested for using the devices in flight.

Ok Doom... just because you didn't like the answer, don't shoot the messenger. If you doubt you could be arrested for it how about you look up "Interference with Flight Crew Members and Attendants". I thought in that episode of mythbusters that it was plausible that it could cause interference. I'd always thought it was bunk but for some reason I thought I saw that episode and they did show some interference? Maybe I'm crazy

im pretty sure they said it was busted. im gonna have to look on youtube lol if im wrong my apologies but seems like i remember thinking that that was another dumb law (the other i was thinking was dumb was the no cell phones at the gas pumps)

Well I can tell you despite what the Mythbusters say I have with "my own two eyes" seen what can happen if someone turns on a phone. Granted it doesn't happen with EVERY phone, nor does it happen with every phone of the same type.
I have had my phone on in the cockpit (forgot to turn it off) and haven't had issues, but then one time I did and swore it would never happen again.
It is more than likely due to crappy construction, leaky (RF-wsie) internals etc.
Would someone ever get caught doing it? Perhaps... perhaps not, but I do know that I wouldn't want to be the one caught.

well who can gaurantee that all passengers have modern phones? i know mine causes the clock radio and car radio to get MASSIVE inteference when recieving or making calls.
i don't want to be that guy who caused the pilot to miss the " LOOK OUT! THERES ANOTHER PLANE HEADING RIGHT FOR YOU!" message over his radio.
or maybe you think having the convenience of you cell phone is worth it.

Shes getting up there in age and has a trouble moving and some slightly blury vision. Currently shes on a walker and me or a neighbor checks in with her once a day but shes stubborn and cant afford to pay the fees for a life alert pendant.
She has a nice lg smart phone that is always charged. I purchased one of the knock gt80 mtk made apple watch clones thinking i would pair it, then put some emergency contacts on the screen and boom problem solved.
Long story short os was impossible to reskin into the large bright tiles i was thinking of (windows mobile os) Still I think it holds weight.
Gang, I spoil her dearly with tech and tech support but im at a loss on this one. We have a total budget of 60 dollars out of pocket to make this happen within the next week as I will be leaving for a work seminar.
Heres what I am thinking. I need any and all of your suggestions and ideas to help make this happen. I am not afraid of moding / roming / iv even bricked my fair share of devices. We just need to get this done and on budget.
Be able to push or tap and instantly call 4 seperate contacts in one motion. she taps my name it calls me and she can talk to me through the device. She can call my friend, her neighbor, or 911 in an easy motion.
an alarm / reminder tied to the calendar would be great for her medicines.
water resistance would be a plus but im being realistic here.
bluetooth for easy interface with her android smart phone.
if any way possible the ability for her to use "ok google" for voice commands, set reminders etc.
if anyone knows a existing device i can modify to behave this way at the price point that is amazing.
If I have missed something and theres a device like this and I havent found it eshoping please tell me.

I searched for a sports smart watch and read about a one button sos function on the aiwatch C5 - they go for $ 62 at gearbest.com atm... Perhaps that ones for you? Even got Pulse meter
