Hey all,
I'm working on a new mp3 player for windows mobile devices. I took inspiration from the iPod function in the iPhone. This should integrate well with the existing iPhone based themes for windows mobile devices.
I'm using .NET CF, PythonCE and flash to create the app.
Here's the youtube link of what it looks like so far:
Melody 0.8 Final Sneak Peak!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fNUyIHEIv-M
Enjoy .
Chad.
To everyone who has problems with current Melody:
Just to let you guys know, I've officially stopped the development of the .NET version of melody, and I've started intense learning of C++ Win32 development. Having said this, I wont be able to support any errors or problems you might have with the .NET version, in an effort to have a native version of melody out ASAP. Once this is done, a new thread will be created. However, I have posted the source for version 0.7, and anyone is free to pick it up and even release new versions if they so desire.
You can check out the C++ implementation of Melody (PocketMelody) here:

It really looks pretty cool !!! great job !! can't wait !
cant wait to try will you be posting the files soon
Man, please don't become a film maker. The phone was so blurry that I am now dizzy.
All phones really need to have flush screens like the Touch so you aren't digging your finger in the corner or hit the side when scrolling on the screen.
The application looks nice, is it heavy on system resources?

i think this is a dell x30 not a ppc phone.. its a regular pda probably with the upgraded specs of 624mhz instead of 312 and its still on wm2003se no way its wm5.. i miss thesed ays but i dont miss losing my info for a depleted battery

Okay, just to answer some questions:
Coding in native C? I've done some C programming before, but doing the album art animations in C seems very near impossible for me. I'll definitely take a look at it though.
The Machine:
Yes, it's an old Dell Axim X30 High, with 620mhz. Which is why I would love to hear how it performs on phones, that usually have much slower processors. I've got some ideas for speed improvements, but looking forward to your feedback guys.
Please note though, I didn't really want to release so soon, but all the requests have made me go against what I originally thought was a good release candidate point. In other words, EXPECT BUGS! Lol. And PLEASE READ THE README file if you want things to work properly.

*** *Update
Well,
It seems like I'm an idiot - there were a few very serious issues with Beta1.1.
I have released a new beta - with the following issues fixed:
* You can actually add a new virtual screen now! Ugh.
* Vastly improved desktop player in the designer. No more crashes
* New window to show/hide/delete virtual screens in project.
* Tooltips on toolbox now read correctly.
* Miscellaneous crash fixes.

****
Hi Everyone,
I've been working incredibly hard to get this out to you all: HotDesk Beta 1.
For screenshots, and a more thorough description, see the thread here
Not all the features I would have liked made it into this release - but I wanted to get this out so you can see the concepts behind what I'm doing. Some (albeit limited) documentation is installed with this release, as well as a shortcut (in the HotDesk folder in the Start Menu) to install the HotDesk player to your mobile device.
Also note - you will need the .net runtime version 2 installed to both your device, and to your PC.
You can download them here:
PC Version
Mobile Version
Please report any and all bugs, suggestions and issues to me, Alex Taylor - I'll accept them gladly.
** Please, please, please read the documentation before using the designer - I'm sure some of you will have suggestions to make it more intuitive than it is now
* Please note, this is a time limited (60 day) beta - I'm sure by then that there will be a new release. I just don't want this version floating around when there's a release available that fixes the bugs I'm sure exist here ..
* I have included a sample desktop (test7.desk), that you can transfer to your device as an example, and use in the designer to get you started.
* For some reason, WinZip doesn't like running this setup.exe out of the zip file directly - extract the two files first, in their folder - then run from there.

Hi All,
A new screenshot of the designer for you:

Ok,
There were several issues with the original beta. The product is now a lot more functional. Please download again, and try it out.

Hi,
There is also documentation installed with the program itself (in the start menu folder). Any issues, post here (or email me) - and I'll get back to you ASAP. Thanks for taking part!
I like it. What little I got on my 8125 seemed to run without hesitation which shocked me compared to other unmentionable apps like WAD Do you have a QVGA sample to work with? Thanks and Good work.

Glad to hear at least something works Suggestions are pouring in - and I'm coding as fast as I can. A QVGA sample is on it's way - one of the most highly requested things.
I'm also writing a TGA loader for the next beta - a lot of people seem to have TGA images from other themers, that they want to use.
Link?
Hello LordChaos,
I'd like your application, but there is a small problem: your DL link is invalid. Any alternate/updated link?
i wish you best with that.
I can confirm, DL is broken. Can you post your program again? (or anyone who has downloaded it)?
"Following in the brave footsteps of it's old father, PocketMelody (now just a baby) strives to accomplish the realm of mass satisfaction, while increasing upon the faulty stability of Melody."
PocketMelody is a C++ implementation of a .NET CF media player for windows mobile devices. The switch to C++ code was made for many reason, but mainly due to the speed advantages associated with applications written in C++. It is my personal mission to:
1) Bring pocketmelody to a stage of equality in comparison to it's .NET father.
2) Improve upon the features already implemented.

Update:
0.3 Just Released! Playlist scrolling routine, and tweaked interface introduced. Download it, and check it out for yourself .
Please read the following FAQ, before posting a bug, it might have been spotted already, and will save all of us some time . Thanks Stpete111 .
FAQ: PocketMelody v.0.3 (By Stpete111)
1. I get a white screen where album art should be. What gives?
The developer is aware of it and is working on it for the next release.
2. Why does starting PocketMelody take a long time?
The developer is aware of it and is working on it for the next release.
3. Why is scrolling in the song list not smooth?
The developer is aware of it and is working on it for the next release.
4. I get strange characters in the title bar?
The developer is aware of it and is working on it for the next release.
5. My wma's don't show up in my song list?
Mp3's only supported right now. The developer is aware of it and is working on it for a future release.
6. How do I close PocketMelody?
Tap the album art, and hit the "X" button.
7. In the root directory of my phone, why do I have a bunch of album.jpg files?
The developer is aware of it and is working on it for the next release.
8. Album art shows ok for me for the first few albums I listen to, and then I get a white screen or a black screen?
The developer is aware of it and is working on it for the next release.
9. How does PocketMelody read album art anyway?
It reads from the album art embedded in your ID3v2 tag. Make sure you have art embedded in your tags. You can use virtually any current tagging software to embed art in your tags.
10. Why doesn't PocketMelody have <insert media player function here> included in its functionality?
PocketMelody is in the very early stages of development. It's not even meant to be a true full-featured release until version 1.0, as is the case with most software. The developer is open to any and all suggestions to make it great software, but please don't post these suggestions in a manner such that they are bugs of the current version.
11. PocketMelody isn't enough like the Iphone for me. What should I do?
Buy an Iphone and go away.
12. PocketMelody doesn't function like a media player should. I'm angry about this. Should I seek professional help?
Yes. While awaiting your appointment for professional help, please remind yourself that the software is FREE and the developer owes you NOTHING.
13. Why can't I just read through the whole thread and realize that all my questions are answered in there?
Because I'm too much of a lazy numbnuts and would rather make everyone repeat themselves ad nauseum so as not to inconvenience myself.
14. Why is Stpete111 such an a**hole?
He only gets really pi$$y when people waste other people's time (especially the developer's) by asking stupid questions.
15. Does Stpete111 think he's funny with this FAQ?
No. Stpete111 is serious. DEAD serious.
Here are the Screenshots of v0.3, I'll keep them updated as per releases.

im looking forward to the new undertaking you put upon yourself. melody .7 was great, i cant imagine what u have in store for us next
Mean scan function
Oooh, a release is very soon guys. I just finished the scan function, and this little devil leaves nothing behind. If you give it a folder, it'll run through EVERY file, and scan sub folders to the nth level! I initially said, you would just give it your storage card, but I'm wondering if that's such a good idea, since it would be scanning lots of folder with no relevance to melody. Wouldn't it make sense to give it your mp3 folder, and let it scan there?? Brimming with excitement .

Chad, I'm sure you're catching up on some much needed sleep.
It's Monday morning, I'm in the office, and as usual, it sucks. v.1 of PocketMelody will be my little cup of happy that usually comes with my morning coffee.
Any chance we'll see it today?
V 0.1
Hey guys, sorry I haven't updated in a while, but as you know C++ is hard work. Last night I finished coding all the relevant mp3 playback function, play pause stop etc. Finalized the directory scanning function, and it works GREAT! I would release now, but I've got some minor gui stuff to paint before I make a release. Going to uni in about 15 mins, plus I've got two tests today. BUT! As soon as I get back this afternoon, I'll package everything up and release.
Here is what you can look forward to though:
PocketMelody 0.1, will have only three screens, the main player, the playlist (which is a regular listbox for now) and the screen to change device to scan, or to re-scan previously selected device for mp3's. By device, I mean any temp storage media ex. you storage card.
I'm using a regular listbox, since I haven't created the scrolling feature, but I've looked at larna's source for iContacts, and even thought of some ways of doing it myself, once 0.1 works well, finger scrolling playlist will be next on the list.
I wanted to make this a release since it deals with two CORE functions, one of which was the cause of many problems in Melody .NET. If this works well, we can all say that right off the bat we've smashed a huge problem with the .NET Melody.
It's 9:00am here, and I'll be back at around 3:00pm this afternoon. That should give you an idea (in terms of your time) how long you have to wait .
EXCITED!
Added a quick fix file for users with 0.95 installed
-Fixes the huge weather icon
-All programs including subfolders show up under programs
-volume control under settings just controls flipslide sounds not pda volume.
-also an option in flipslidelaunch.ini to turn of sound always just add false to the bottom.
-Tasks are organized properly and tasks with no due date don't display 1/1/01
Just unzip FlipSlide_0.95_Fix.zip below and copy to your \program files\FlipSlide directory on your pda, also delete your flipslide.ini and flipslidelaunch.ini files in the home \ directory.
Enjoy.
The new version which is dedicated to speed and size is coming along nicely, I may be able to finish it this weekend. It is about 7 times smaller in size and should hopefully be atleast 5 times quicker for load time and runtime.

FLIPSLIDE v0.95 RELEASED

WOOOW this is a great program, i installed it on my kaiser/tytn II but its QVGA, are you willing to make a QVGA version to, because i really love this, if it was commercial i would pay for it. the vga version works on kaiser.
Thanks in advance for considering..
greetings
Marcel van Blankers
Is there any QVGA version??
It seems very great I want to try it out..
Works good on my Axim X51V using WM6.1 but can I customize it? Don't use Media Player for example.. Also on the first page it shows tasks but no appointments! Anyway it's a great thing, one of the best I've tested so far!
Just in time to get nominated for the awards!Of course, without a QVGA version.....
Thans for the feedback
About the calendar, The calendar button on the front page is your daily planner. It shows only appointments for the day, you can press the arrors above it to go forward and back days and pressing the center bar returns you to your current day. If any on the front page icons have a green bar under it then that means you have data in it.
For the QVGA option, I do plan on building one however it's a little difficult because i only have a vga pda and I want to design it differently for QVGA, this program was designed to not have to use a stylus and take advantage of the large display. I want to use a diffent touch interface for QVGA that better maximizes the space for it's specs. But yes, it's in my plans.
For the video link, i've have problems getting one uploaded because i can't find the software to retrieve it from my camera an they don't allow you to download it. And software recorders for the PDA always seem to make it look choppy which it i not. If anyone doesn't mind recording a short vid and put it on youtube or somewhere i can access it I would be very greatful.
About customization, My next release I plan to allow changes to default programs for media, contact, tasks, dialer and such. I also plan of making this skinable. I definately agree withyou, I also don't use media player as my default player.
Thank you very much for all your feedback. I will keep posting more, I usualy create new releases each week or two.
:>
Chet Striker
thank you very I will test it and give you feedback!
about the calendar again, it has a green bar but when I press it doesn't show any entry! the tasks icon works for me!
It looks nice. I will try it.
Curious G
This is only for the VGAversion????
Thanks...
Might bring some competition to PointUI in later builds!
Feedback
Hey TacoLoco, I was wondering if you could give me more info about your calendar problem, like do you have appointments in microsoft calendar for the day? and if so are your appointments a single occurance or weekly, monthly or yearly appointments that are in microsoft calendar but not in flipslide?
also i was wondering what PDA and OS your using.
Any further feedback would be very helpful.
Thanks

Here is small how to to start android on Athena.By mistadman
Download Android for Athena here(last build): http://rapidshare.com/files/118229739/Android-Athena-05282008.exe.html
free method(please use only when you cant you rapidshare) http://gymjs.net/~m.novak/Android-Athena-05282008.exe
Once downloaded, unzip and copy the unzipped files to a SD Card. The root of your SD Card should have these files:
haret.exe
default.txt
zImage
initrd-android
Once you have verified the files listed, insert the SD Card in to your Athena. From there just load up Windows Mobile and browse to your "Storage Card" in "File Explorer". Click on the file called "haret.exe", and once the program has loaded; click run.
Just remember that this is work in progress!
more info:
its only the system, the keybord is not working, screen isnt working.Just remember that this is work in progress!
Here is some plan what must we do(by mistadman):
1.) Add some Ati specific 3D acceleration (Double Buffering, Rotation).
2.) Optimize Power Saving...
3.) Add/repair touch screen driver.
4.) Add/create keyboard driver.
5.) Add sound
6.) Add phone driver support (be able to make a call).
7.) Add Wifi Driver.
8.) Get the camera working maybe?!?!

Just remember though, we do not want to duplicate Google's efforts... What I mean is that Google OS/Middleware (Android) will be in direct competition with the iPhone, Symbian, Window Mobile, etc. That means we can expect things like onscreen keyboards, SMS apps, Office Apps (probably complements of Google Docs/Google Gears), mapping/GPS software (Google Maps), a camera app, etc... (See: http://reviews.cnet.com/4520-9239_7-6546759-1.html for more info) And that’s not to mention some of the great work already being done by Third-Party Vendors (Android Developer Challenge: see: http://phandroid.com/2008/05/10/adc-round-1-winners for more info). Heck, look at what was done on the iPhone... And it was/is "closed source"!
I believe the IMPORTANT thing is that we provide a stable kernel for Google's "Middleware". I envision that most of the kernel work will revolve around driver development (in order of priority): (Here is a pictorial representation of the software stack:http://i.i.com.com/cnwk.1d/i/bto/20080521/android_stack_540x387.jpg, as you can see the kernel is the base to which all other software depends on.)
Keyboard
Touch screen
Phone
Video
Sound
And of course:
Wifi
Bluetooth
GPS
Camera
Long term objectives:
Sub-display
Accelerometer
Of course there will need to be work done on Android itself... Maybe we will need to develop applications custom to the Athena Hardware. At the very least, we will have to provide Android with a way to talk to hardware via kernel icotls (e.g. Camera Settings, Video Settings, etc…). So having some with inside knowledge of Android will help. Not sure though, because I haven’t hacked on Android (yet ;-) )...
Once the kernel/drivers are stable I believe Android will be a better fit for the Athena than WM6 could have ever be.
What do you guys think?
FYI: Looks like Google is already improving Android: http://www.talkandroid.com/99-adc-finalists-receive-android-sdk-snapshot-access/
i will have new develop version of Android soon.i hope so.so maybe it could be better for this project.i will let you know!

Update...
Just to let you guys know, I have been working on the touch screen driver. I pretty much have it working perfectly, expect for the fact that the touch screen works in the horizontal position even though Android boots vertically. I am pretty sure I will not be much longer before I release an update.
Also, if anyone is working on any particular issue related to porting Android to the Athena, please let us know. The more the merrier!
The main thing is that we wouldn't want to duplicated efforts or if someone is working on an issue we could match you up with someone doing the same thing. This would speed development a great deal. Two heads or better than one! On the main page I will post updates as to where we are with each issue.
And thanks to everyone who is either showing interest or encouragement!
Maybe you should give to each update a date.So they can know what is new and what is old.I tried to do someting with video driver, but no luck at all.ï can do more when i will be back home.
edit:we have(with mistadman) decided something about marking releases.he will tell everything to you.thx
All in one executable...
Hello everyone,
I am trying something new... Even though there has been some progress with this project, I am re-releasing the original Android release as an All-in-one executable for testing. If all goes well, we will be releasing further updates in this fashion. If you are testing, please post feedback on this thread.
This will help make testing easier, because there will be less files to mess with, and anyone new to testing will not be easily confused. Also the "All-n-1" release will be dated, which should also minimize confusion.
If anyone has any suggestions, or any better ideas, let us know. Thanks!
Here is a the link to the "All-n-1" re-release: http://rapidshare.com/files/117520672/Android-Athena-05172008.exe.html
***NOTE*** There is nothing new with this release, other than the fact its all merged in to one file for easier testing.
New Update...
Hello everyone... I'm back with a new update! I finally got the touch screen working! Still have a lot of work left of course.
If you want to play with it, you can get it here: http://rapidshare.com/files/118229739/Android-Athena-05282008.exe.html. This is an "All-n-1 Release". Just copy the exe to your sd card and run. After clicking, it could take up to 20 seconds to boot. Be patent!
As always, this is work in progress... Thanks for testing!
Here is the patch and .config:
thanks very much it's working fine and waiting for keyborad and wifi
Regarding Windows 6.1
Should I just install it now? Or wait til NSPSD4 releases his ROM?
You could install now, the phone is usable and there are just a few adjustments to make it 99%
But if you're not in the mood to do that (reg edits, cabs and files) just wait to the final version. I believe it's worth.
Don't wait. It is faster at booting & some bloat has already been removed. The network wizard cab was a necessity post install for me.
very worth it imo... if you have the default neo tmo rom on there it bogs it down quite a bit... with the clean dev you have more storage space, more ram available due to using less system resources and overall a bettery experience, and its noticeable...
all the fixes for problems have been posted, and theres some goodies that still work fine from freddyreyes.com
I thought that a 4.2 version was in the works that would include all the reg fixes, patches, and programs.
if not can someone create a step by step sheet that simplifies what all the other threads on 3 different sites have come up with? I use my phone for every day stuff, and I cannot be messing with it over 5 days sorting through the mess of posts that I saw. I'm sure I am not the only one that wants this, and or benifit from a condensed all in one guide. I don't want to come off sounding like a stuck up or lazy person, but am looking at the big picture and seeing a very large mess that seriously needs sorted out. and I for one won't do it as I don't know which reg entries are correct or what programs are absolutly needed and cause someone somewhere alot of grief.
I can wait for a new release, but if all the stuff was to be gathered up nice and neat then there would be no need for another release, and save ND4SPD alot of time and trouble.....

MMS fix (which i haven't really figured out) for the clean dev
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=394735
i'll add as i come up with more, but that should get you started fairly well... N4 is coming out with his soon so no point in me trying to start up a cab with all this included and installed
your welcome
That is a start, but I remember seeing issues like the background screen during calls looked bad, and something with MMS setup and txt reply issues. I see that most of it is not a make or break thing but more of a convenience or eye sore.
thanks for posting stuff that you have so far, but man I seen alot of regedits and once I gather them all I'll see what is really needed. Like I said I want to do this upgrade, but I want everything laid out in front of me so I can dedicate the time needed for the upgrade, cause it is a real pain for me to make time(at least till college ends) to mess with stuff where it is a trial and error situation. Thanks for the start and lets try and get a nice and tidy list going.
Also for the Jbed program there a few fixes out there that I found once, didn't book mark, to fix stuff like the bottom of the screen cutting off and showing the stuff from the background, and performance settings, and other items. I really need a better way of bookmarking crap I really do.....
thanks for the starting run....
P.S. I plan on doing this this weekend.
I just noticed that that is for the clean dev install.... on allshadow there is another install that I was looking at that I want to do that is not the same as the clean dev install. Not sure which one is better, can anyone chime in on that?
BTW I have the shadow version(I know they are the same, just stating)
Ha, I went ahead and upgraded.
i'd wait.
i read that camera and video don't work properly right?
i can care less about those stupid myfaves..
can someone make like a review of he good n the bad?
