No SIM hack? - 8525, TyTN, MDA Vario II, JasJam General

Hi all,
I just bought a second Hermes (my first sometimes won't detect the SIM, takes forever to come on from powersave, and is scratched to hell ). I'd like to use the old one to hack on. Is there any way to tweak WM5 so that it will operate without a SIM card inserted? Right now when I start it up without the SIM it boots and I see the 'Today' screen for a second, and then it jumps into the phone app and I can't exit it.
Any help appreciated.

I should add that I've SIM unlocked the device but that doesn't seem to help. Thanks again.

Solved it There's no 'x', but if you hit 'Clear' it drops back to Today.

Sim Card ??

Hi All
Have searched to see if this has been covered before ! but a bit of help for a newbie please
Is it possible to remove & replace the sim card without the unit losing all data etc ??
Only had the XDA11 for a couple of weeks,,all set up ok ?? with tom-tom etc, The other day had to remove the sim card for the day, so disconnected the battery for under 30 sec's, to remove the card, and replaced later that day, also within 30 sec etc, on powering up again,
all data was lost and the unit started to reload as a new unit again, is this correct,
Hope this makes sense
Best Regards TJ
I have a number of devices that I swap sims with regularly and have no problems as you describe.
Changing the SIM shouldn't cause it to hard reset only soft reset.
I have had a device that had the main battery flat but still kept its settings over a weekend on the backup battery.
Have you checked the level of the backup battery in the Power screen to see if there is any charge in it?
Thanks tyfy
Yep checked the batt levels before taking the card out, about 80% and 100 on backup etc,, but as you say, it did a hard start
Regards TJ
I can confirm the hard reset thing when I swapped SIM cards. Annoying at the time, but provided an impulse to update to 'latest' ROM. Haven't removed the SIM since, for fear of the same thing happening. If I could ever get home PC, work PC and home iMac properly synched and backed up, I'd remove it again to see what happens. Occured to me at the time that T-Mobile might have been up to some software tricks, then the paranoia left as suddenly as it arrived
Thanks Guys
I need to remove the sim card, so to fit the inbuilt carphone, O2 do not do 2 cards on the same number as yet !!
So !! is it possible to swap them around without having to do a hard start every time ??

Hi cruisin-thru
Thanks for the link, not quite what i am looking for,
I need 2 cards ?? with the same number, or a way of moving the card from the XDA to the car and back again without doing a hard start every time ???
Regards TJ
Did a full back up to my SD last night, then checked the battery levels, = all OK, pull the battery and SIM, counted to 42 reinserted the SIM, battery and catch for battery, and everything normal. ALL data intact.
If you have a sim that is a few years old it is possible to clone it, the modern sims however will not work as the protection has yet to be cracked, if you do search on sim clone in google you will get lots of info. If you do manage to clone your sim make sure that only one phone is switched at at any one time or you may find that the security system on your network will zap the sim if it sees 2 identical numbers logged on.
Hi Guys
Thanks for the help,, been away over the weekend,
Took the card out Fri night, (took less the 20 secs) to put into the car system,,,,guess what, another hard start,, now sat here reloading all the stuff again (ie Tomtom ) etc
Had about 80% batt power with 100% backup,, i must be doing something wrong somewhere, can not belive this happens every time the card is removed !!
Regards TJ
Are you turning the PHONE off as well as the PDA? ie: set to flight mode before you turn it off. Maybe that's the problem?
Hi All
I think GaZ,s suggestion might have cracked it !!
Remove the tom tom chip, did a back up to storage card, and put the phone into flight mode, then removed the sim card within about 15 secs,
all OK !!,, have tried a couple of time and so far all ok
Many thanks to you all for the help, appreciated

You need to post some more details. Hermes will boot to OS normally without any SIM card at all - even if network locked.
Is it freezing in Windows or freezing at the turn on screen or before that stage?
Are you booting into Windows successfully?
Is this the device lock set to time out after zero seconds?
Have you tried a hard reset to "cure" the problem?

xda switches on by itself?

hi folks!
i got a problem with my XDAII since the last few days.. it switches itself on without me doing anything!
It sits on my desk now and even if i dont touch it it will switch on. I can switch it off, but within a minute its on again! This is not just a problem with the battery life but also when its in my pocket somewhere and the keys get pressesd
i havent changed any settings, it started by itself (really! )
What I did find out is that if i switch flight mode on, then it doesnt happen! So maybe its something with the radio? All other connections (bluetooth, infrared etc) are disabled and have always been so.
the phone is set to only switch on by the on/off button, if its off all other buttons are locked.
thanks for any suggestions..
Perhaps you have scheduled the phone to do something? I have heard of the scheduler accidently being switched on, though I don't know much more about it.
It may also be (less likely) a short somewhere. I have a broken XDA that I am able to short to turn on and restart etc.
Have you checked to make sure no programs are running in the background?
Also, make sure none of the hard buttons are pressed in constantly. One may have been pressed down and got stuck, or perhaps it is in a case (leather) that constantly presses the buttons.
Also, some phones are set to switch on when an SD card is inserted. Do you have an SD card in the phone? Perhaps it is faulty, or the card slot is faulty, or it isn't in all the way.
Except for the applications that came on the phone, have you installed any third party apps? If so, what are they?
hi jadel,
thanks for your answer. it was actually the sd card inserted into the phone that caused the problem. removed the card -> problem solved! thanks!
is there a way to disable this setting, that the phone switches on when a sd card is inserted? I find it very annoying..
grtz
mischka
Hi Mischka,
have you tried another SD Card? probably ur SD Card is defected/broken for some reason. I had an experience that was similar to this with my Xphone O2. it turned on without any touch. i tried another SD Card, and another new SD Card. it came to my conclusion that the socket of SD had been broken/faulty. It did.
thank God my Hima is still in a good condition.
or try to O2 service center to check the socket SD of yours.
regards,

SIM card not inserted - anyone else had this problem?

Hi all,
Just got home, looked at my mobile and it said there was no signal - so I turned it off and back on again, then it said there was no SIM inserted. Keep restarting the phone, keeps saying the same thing. Why?!
Am going to try it in my old SE K850i to see if it's the SIM card or the phone at fault.
In the mean time, does anyone else know of this fault and how to fix..?
I didn't the drop the phone or anything, it was just in my pocket, on it's own - like it always is!
Cheers
Tried it in my K850, works fine. Please someone help
yeah i usually dont put the sim card all the way in but slightly in and it works
I've re-opened this thread due to me misreading....DOH! Apologies (Mental note to one self.......follow own advice and read before posting).

you could try to clean the contacts on the sim card connector of the phone with a q-tip, and see if that solves the problem.
also check if any of those contacts appears to be bent or something, and so doesn't make a connection with the card.
Everytime I open the back up to remove the SD card, I get the SIM card missing bit even though I have not touched it! My HD is only 3 months old and it has done this from the start. I just have to remove it a bit - shove it back in and the phone accepts it is there. Annoying but not enough for me to send it back.
hmm, maybe try to make the sim a bit thicker so it doesnt move around (it shouldn't move by removing the back cover, but it seems to happen on your phone / sim combination.
try putting a thin piece of paper on top of the sim (not the contacts side, but the side facing to the battery cover)
maybe that prevents this problem?
Missing simcard
I have the same problem with my simcard. Though something strange happens when the phone is off for more then 10min, it works fine and notices there is a simcard for like 30 sec after which the error pops-up again. I have tried all of the above things, my simcard works fine in my other phone, adding some paper to thicken it doesn't work either
Anyone who could help me with this?
P.S. sorry for the bad english
As in post 7# written, put some papersheet in the simholder above your simcard to increase the contactpreasure. This surely helps.
Tis trick is also useful for all dualsim users who thik the dualsimadapter does not work in their device (but after using this trick get astonished!)
for Thysiey:
Try to switch to Gsm mode to test . Maybe you have bad umts signal? Happens at other places too, or only at one place?
Got the same issue here...
I cannot move the SIM because it is being hold in place by the battery. (to little room)
Adding a piece did not work either.
Anyone got another solution?
anyone? My mothers HD just got this problem now. She has a new phone and for the contract renewal she had to read the backside of the sim. The phone all of a sudden didn't recognizes the simcard anymore.. I tried a few other simcards but it won't read it anymore.
My plan was to sell the old phone but now it's almost worthless just a shame it is still a great phone to operate.. handy with the navigation and all

Nexus 4 - SIM problem

Hello,
I just got a Nexus 4 16GB (had a 8GB before) and I've to reenter my PIN code almost every time I'm unlocking the phone when it has been in deep sleep. (the card is locked and the phone is disconnected from the network)
I first thought it's caused by custom ROMs, but it's even happening on stock ROM/kernel...
Am I the only one with that kind of problem ?
If you get the sim pin wrong a couple of times, the card is locked and you need to call your provider for a personal unlock code.
If you keep trying to unlock it eventually the sim will simply become inoperable and you'll need a new one.
I can unlock it without a problem after entering my correct pin.
So it is not a problem with the SIM or my provider.
Go into Settings > security and then there should be an option along the lines of Sim card lock. Try checking in there.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda premium
Disabled the pin lock for now.. But the signal still drops when the phone is longer in deep sleep.
I had the same problem!
I don't know if this is rom or kernel related, but since I switched to ParanoidAndroid it's gone....
Ah finally someone with the same problem.
I've already been running PA, but the problem did still exist.
Did you change anything else beside that?
i removed my SIM again and cleaned it.
i've also had that issue the second day after receiving the phone. I removed the sim, put it back in but that didn't help - i looked at my sim card tray and i realized that a one side of the sim card chip was close to one metal side of the tray and i figured that could be the issue - so what i did is i took a stripe of adhesive tape and made sure they wouldn't touch - I haven't had the issue again and it's been more than 2 weeks.
Uh...I remember a kernel arg from my old HTC Topaz WiMo-Device, which was able to run XDAndroid.
The argument was pm.sleep_mode, and it is still available on the Nexus 4 and set in the system/build.prop
It controls, how the device handles locking, usually it is set to 1, but, i think, it goes from 5 to 0, where 5 is "stay on all the time" and 0 is "shut down everything when locked".
You could try to swich it to 2 or 3, maybe it helps.
I got a replacement phone which is working fine now.
Thanks for the tips anyway
hmm got a 16gb one and the Sim keeps disconnecting even without deep sleep.
might need to send it back too. poop
Hi,
I got the same problem too.
Sometime, it's getting worse and worse so I have no other choice but to reboot the phone --> When I put my PIN code and press the validation button, the screen doesn't go to the main menu but asks me again about my PIN code. Infinite loop...
I cleaned the SIM card 15min ago and no problem since (fingers crossed). I read an alternative version of android solved the issue in one case but not always. I won't take that risk if I have to send it back to the manufacturer. Before I do that, could you suggest me something else to try ?
Many thanks for your help.
Best,
Valentin
I had the Nexus 4 since December and yesterday for the first time the phone asked for the PIN code and lost the connection to the network. And like posytryon I had to enter the PIN more than once (in my case it was "only" twice). This morning it already happened twice again. Never rooted the phone, stock Android on it. What is going on?
Why are you people so paranoid? I've never used a lock on mine. In all these years....
Just asking for trouble using sim lock IMO.
What kind of silly reply is that? Why is it asking for trouble using SIM lock??? And if you read through this thread, someone had the same problem of the phone not connecting anymore even without SIM lock.
I pulled my sim yesterday because I switched users now it says no sim I put old sim in same problem flashed new rom nothing...

I'd noticed the same thing, and insulating the SIM from the holder resolved the problem for me also.
I also found an app for monitoring and alerting if the phone switched back to asking for the SIM PIN, this might be useful for others.
SIM Locked Notifier - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.slaytanic.SIMLockedRingNotifier
Finally put some adhesive between the tray and the SIM card. Worked perfectly for me too, no SIM problem for 10 days now.
Thank you so much, Lucker#1.
