Today Plugin for playing animated GIFs

Hello together,
I was thinking about a today plugin that takes an animated GIF files
and plays the animation directly on the today screen.
I was searching for such a plugin but could not find one so
I decided to develope on on my self.
If such a plugin exists can someone tell me where I can find one?
Or do you think such a plugin is stupid?

ive tried a few of them, its ok if you are into fish

but I think it will need more resources than
a thiny gif animation. And it is very easy to
make a gif animation with some frames.

First GIF animation today plugin release
This is a first release of a simple today plugin that shows
an animated GIF in the today screen area.
The position of the gif, that is displayed, is currently fixed in the area
of the plugin.
I will change this in the next release, so that the position can be configured.
The position of the plugin itself can be changed under
Start - Settings - Today - Items (TodayGif).
After install you must activate the plugin first!
The gif file that will be displayed can be found under: \Windows\Today.gif
You can replace the file with one of your favorite one. After replace you must
deactivate and then activate the plugin to show the new gif.
Sure the animation uses some CPU time, but the thread that displays
the animation has idle priority so that other work can be done with
no effects.
You can pause and restart the animation by tipping on the animation area.
This is the first release and I will keep on developing more features
and improvments.
I hope you enjoy it!

- Improved gif decoder (it is although possible that a gif file with an unknown format cannot be displayed)
- If a gif file can not be loaded an error message is displayed on the today screen

- Context menu added (when you tap on the today plugin area a menu pops up where you can open the config and change the position of the gif animation)

A good application of that would be to allow gifs to be assigned to a specific location then use that location as a hotspot for a control. When a tap comes it would play the animation and look like a cool widget. eg a slider would be ideally suited to a user replaceable animation, and if you made the hotspot dependant on the image size it could be useful.

Does the gif have to be a certain resolution or size??
I used a gif that was 14.7KB and 75x75...it froze my PPC. I had to restart my PPC in safe mode to uninstall the plugin :-/.

Have tested the plugin with lot of gif files and had no problem.
The size is not important you can use any.
Can you send me the gif file that has caused this problem so I can
analyse why this happens? What device have you used?

I use this gif and my ASUS P525 is frozen.

tried it on my wizard and himalaya and its doesn't freeze or something...

So have tested you gif files and it seems that it has an encoding
that is currently not supported in my gif decoder.
I will make first a new version of the plugin so that if an unsupported
gif file is used the device does not freeze.

Aboinger, I am also interested in exploring Ultimate Launcher. Your Athena Ultimate Launcher Interface looks so nice. How did you do that? Can you explain step by step. Cos I also installed Ultimate Launcher, but Ultimate Launcher can only slide from right to left or vice versa, functions like the "easy shortcut". But Ultimate Launcher cannot move up and down.

Landscape is supported and works perfectly fine...
my ultimate launcher is also limited from side to side / fade animations
when you are in the tabs option and hit create new it should give you an option to add in plugins / shortcuts
what exactly did u need help with id be more than happy to help

I know this is a thread to demo the UL (which I just got put on two days ago....awesome software). But boinger, I notice that you have flames on your S2U2. One: where did you get that animated background for it? Second: your S2U2 looks as if it was designed for VGA....mine looks like a stretched QVGA screen. How can i get mine crisp like yours?

yes this one is the english version
and about S2U2 i changed the graphics for vga.. you can do that simply by editing the .png's
i just changed the clock files to be honest.
and in real vga mode the slider doesnt work. so i enabled dpad support cause the screen mapping is off.
i can send you the flames gif... i got it off another member and edited it for vga.

You said editing the png's. Does that mean you changed the icons themselves, or you adjusted the values of the png to fit VGA? Just a little confused on that. Or all together, did you edit the pngs in a software such as Adobe Photoshop? If that is the case I might have to ask are you willing to share....thats a little over my head.

What sort of icon format does ultimatelaunch accept. Is it only ico? What about png format?

you can use 32bit xp icons though.. so they look just as nice... only dillema is you have to convert most icons from .png

That would be awesome if you uploaded some of your icons boinger. I'm also trying to find some to share here as well.
I'm struggling a little with the "not activated" signs in the corner. I have registered this app, and entered the code twice. Soft-reset. After a couple of minutes and some navigation, they reappear.
I searched for some answers, and it seems there isnt a fixed from what I was able to find.
Anybody else having this annoyance!!

I think I have the wrong version of S2U2. I just took the WM5 version that I used for my x51v. I say this because, I cant use gif. as a wallpaper for it. I'm assuming that I might not have the most current version.
Lastly, I have been trying to incorporate your icons, but for some reason UL will not show them when I select them. I can only use the default icons that come with them.
Any ideas!!!

I don't seem to be able to enter text for the application icon, although I can see that the config icon has a description.
What is the trick to enter this text?
I'm also unable to choose tab icon. Does tab icon got to meet certain criteria for them to work?

For this you have to click the with text button (next to the xp32 icon)

set the icon size to 72 x 72 that should work..
UL wont show icons unless they are the proper size...

Today Screen Launcher IDEA.. please develop..

hi. i first posted this idea on the PointUI forum.. so forgive me for the blasphemous screen.. anyway.. i jsut want to share this idea for those developers, willing to create a scrolling today screen launcher..

the idea is, to create a launcher that is customizable (custom icons - TGA or PNG for transparency), scrollable, and FUN.. hehe..
anyway.. it's a simple horizontal swipe and scroll.. but the added feature of the - what i call - default pane..
the default pane should be a set of five shortcut icons (user configurable) that can be easily accessed from anywhere in the horizontal list.. how? double tap the space above the icons..
for example, you have a 16 icon horizontal list, if you are in the end of the list, and you have to go back to your default pane, just double tap the space above the icons, and the list will scroll back to your default pane..
also, there should be an option for memory or default..
the memory option remembers the last position of your launcher and remains where it is even after you launched a program or switched to another window..
the default view scrolls the list back to the default pane after launching a program or every time the today screen becomes active..
this idea could not just be a today screen plugin.. it can also be a launcher that can be called via screen gesture (FtouchSL/FtouchFLO).. the difference with this launcher, is if implemented, would just be an over-window rather than a full screen launcher.. it may also be a task switcher.. depends on the developers choice..

look into ultimatlaunch also... very similar to what you are wanting

with customize icons and wallpaper... wold be good.. and a feeds infos too on the clock and events apperance

the upper part of the picture/animation is the PointUI Home interface.. no credit for me with that..
the bottom part however is mostly my creation.. (the icons used were modified from bundled stardock icons for windowsXp)
i created the bottom part and the application launcher ribbon as an idea suggestion for the developers of PointUI..
a bit inspired by the leaked wm7 pix and the iphone springboard hacks they created over at cre.ations.net
i don't really like PointUI that much (YET, but i'm getting there), so i also suggest the idea as a native Today Screen plugin.. and an all around launcher.. a minimalist approach, compared to the touchFLO cube and it's encarnations..
i don't like ultimate launcher that much.. i'm not into Tabbed launchers.. too much space consumed..
throttle launcher looks cluttered at the moment.. too much things are rendered on screen at the same time.. it takes up much time loading and, again, screen real estate.. i'm still eyeing for its future improvements though.. especially if it will be able to get customized, as in, to be able to select the features that will be loaded, and will not..
it's not likely that all people want to see a big clock, a bunch of contact pictures, all of the shortcuts, and running programs cramped in their screen at the same time..

Would be awesome...good idea buddy.

they have a single line launcher now, it the same thing you ar requesting. I'm also keeping an eye on them i think the single line can be a nice addon to every rom. (but it has to be easy customiseble)

If you combine Ultimate Launcher with some clever today screen plugins, especially with rltoday, you can do at least the first part with customization only.

if only the creator wants to make pointui for VGA sigh..

This is what I've so far. I know the look is not the same but without the background's it's the closer I can make it for the today plugin. For the "poping up" app, the same theme can be used without the clocks on throttle main app. A little modification on the app will be needed to show the prevous window as background.

The today plugin ribbon is really eassy to achieve with my app ;-). I've made a simple theme for you. Just uncompress the zip file into your instalation dir of ThrottleLauncher (see my signature).
After that, go to ThrottleConfig app (it must be on your programs menu) and set plugin height to 38 (or higher if you customize the icons to be bigger), then sellect Ribbon on the combo box and click "Set Today's" button. Then on the actions menu (left softkey) select Edit AppDB, add as much app's as you wish (needed fields are title, name and exec, only select an icon if you wan't to override the default of the app). Select the app's you want to be on the Used list. After all that add throttletoday plugin to your today screen.
If you wan't to make some playing with the setup you can take a look at this tutorials

i installed the latest version... and unzipped accordingly, i didnt get the "ribbon" as an option in the dropdown menu... and i cant find that clock ribbon like in your screenshot, if you could post that theme like in your first screenshot, itd be much appreciated, im trying to find something similar to the ribbon in pointui... i dont know how to design it, i just would like to easily scroll through a clock, calendar, and if possible, notifications... mainly just clock and calendar... also, is it possible to have it automatically "fall into place" on the flick/scroll... all your work is appreciated... and thank you in advance

Sorry... my fault... there was an error on the zip. Setup xml must be inside a folder called Ribbon on the setups folder and not directly inside it. Here you have an update of the simple ribbon setup and the one of the screenshots above (this last will require a little work still but I upload it so you can test it ).

Looks good, I especially like the weather panel page!
EDIT: Just found that the square frame part which shows the weather icons in weatherpanel gets cut off from the top by the start bar. Its not the actual image because I checked it and its not cut off in the image file. I think you have to move it down in the layout...I would do it myself but I dont know how. So can you please correct this? I think you cant see it in the image you posted because you have a white background, and the part which gets cut off is the white part of the frame.

It's very TKSSSS~

I delete SPB MS2.1 since I see ur theme. I use it with UItweaker, to get black bars.
I just have little problems with ultimatelaunch gestures.

Its Ok i figured tht out from ur UltimateLaunch.ini and im using Htc Audio manager today plugin in ur music tab ill attach it so u can give it a try And gr8 work man............

Just update on the first post, but still have many bug need to fix

instructions werent very clear on this stuff. most of my tabs are missing dll files (especially comm tab). my missed call count shows "xxx" instead of "0"
the music tab works but isnt showing my album art eventhough its showing in mortplayer....anyway to change this to use with audio manager?? mortplayer takes up too much ram
id love this in a black version like the htc diamond

Hi,
I'd like to know how you get the slim sized font in the systembars. Like the ''start'', ''contact'' font. On your screenshot it shows slim, but originally it show ''bold'' font. How did you do that? Any registry keys?

sorry, i forgot to tell you how to get the cover
1. well organize your song (one album one folder)
2. then a cover photo put into the folder and name it to cover.jpg (file size no larger than 145x145)
that's all, click the play button (at the right side) and mortplayer is run, then return to today screen, if the screen not update, click the screen center
(this is a simply mortscript trick)
This music tag is a theme for XIAMultiTheme and not a plugin
actually a want to make it work for S2P (i can make it show up the cover photo) but can't remote S2P, if someone know how to make it work, pls let me know.

I like the theme. Iam using the rltoday files in my Magician. I've make a change in skin.xml to adjust to my screen and more few things that i like more.

wallpaper quality ...n removed apps

i have 2 quick questions...hope u guys can help...
1)is there a way i can improve the quality of the wallpaper i set... the pics i use as wallpaper r super fine but the when i set them as my background the look like it was taken with a cheap camera...
2) When i remove some apps on my wing some time i still have this ugly icon that does notting... n its bugging the hell out of me...i tried everything i can u get rid of this left-behind icons but there still the...n advise???

wallpaper- try setting the wallpaper through the file explorer. this will allow you to set the transparency. I'm assuming by "cheap camera" you mean the grey overlay thing.
icons- connect your device to activesync and explore it to device>windows>start menu. delete the unwanted icons.

thanks i got thouse ugly icons off but the wallpaper problem is still the ... its not the trasperacy ....for example do n look for a nice pic of what ever u want on ur ppc n the click on it n set it as ur background now go look @ it on ur home screen... i doent look so nice does it...

Same thing here. When i set the wallpaper (using a file explorer) the image looks like it's converted to 16 colors or something. It's far from sharp en perfect as when i look at it on my pc or with my favourite imageviewer.

I have WM5 and when setting an image as wallpaper the image looks bad on the today screen. How did you guys fix this?
The default images from the themes are showing fine. Only when trying to change the image I have this issue.
