Q: Ameo using on vacation in the airplane ? - Advantage X7500, MDA Ameo General

Hello,
I'm a bit confused about my next holidays.
I want to use my Ameo in my vacation, but I've heard/read about problems with the Microdrive and the airplane.
Should I use the Ameo or not in the airplane and/or over the whole fly?
should I have anything to prepare?
11 hour's flight is much to long to let the Ameo in the suitcase and yes, I have an aditional batterypack

I have the Dopod U1000 and use it often in flight mode without any problems. As long as the Phone, WiFi and BT are not enabled, the device complies with aviation regulations and should not present any problems. You would probably need to use the wired headset for audio, but other than that you should be good to go.

I have heard someone say before that the pressure when ascending and descending can damage the microdrive. Dont quote me on that because I have never experienced that. you should be able to turn it off at takeoff and landing to avoid damage.

If that's the case, just take the battery out to ensure it's powered off until you're up in the air and leveled off.
I'll use mine on flights and if it gets damaged then will deal with HTC.

I used my U1000 for two flights without problems. I didn't, however, use it during takeoff and landing. I did use BT though to watch a movie. Didn't seem to bother the airplane any. Also, several people kept their phones on all during the flight. One even got a call midway through the landing. Didn't bother the plane any, but she got a stern look from the stewardess when disembarking.
I do have some strange freezing sometimes though.
If I have accessed the Microdrive for some media (movie, music etc), and I do not close the media player I used, then 1 time out of 15 the device freezes. It could be that the Microdrive doesn't go into sleep mode properly and to protect itself it shuts down and a side effect is the device freezing. Maybe....

Thanks at all for this information.
I thing the best wil be for me:
during landing and takeoff I will power off (complete) the Ameo.
During the flight I could use the Ameo to watch Video, listen music and so on. (and don't activate the phone )
Thanks again and I hope i could enjoy the flight on August the 26th.

No problem
There is no problem with using the HTC Advantage on a flight. I always turn off bluetooth, WIFI and GSM/UMTS, but keep the device in standby. I average 1.5 flights per week, and have had the Advantage since it came out. Absolutely no problems so far. Enjoy!

used mine all the way to the maldives and back
10.5 hour flights no probs, i was in flight mode.
aircrew dont seem to know its a phone as they asked other people to put their phones away, they prob thought it was a mini laptop

i so bad want to go to the Maldives

I found on my HP rx3715 that the screen would die and it would hard reset!! But no problems since, but I don't have a Athena, I have a Hermes which has no problems on international or national flights (melbourne to london; a 22 or so hour flight, melbourne to HK; a 11 or so hour flight etc with no problems)

Never ever Never pack electronics in checked luggage. Always carry it on with you.

yea dude...my athena's hardrive got kinda damaged when the plane ascended and descended...i lost all my data around 4 GIGS of em...and i suggest u keep ur phone off during the hole flight...or store data on an sd card!

Athena GPS and Battery Life

I am currently using my Hermes with an external Bluetooth GPS receiver that has 30 hours battery life. I need this because I do not use the GPS in my car but out mountainbiking or hiking. I love the idea of using the larger Athena screen with digital mapping, but I am worried about battery life if the GPS is built-in since the calculations will probably drain the battery. Has anyone tested the GPS on battery power? How long does it last? Has anyone found good spare batteries?
I have also noted with interest the problems with GPS reception. Has anyone tested this in remote locations (where reception should often be good) or under cloud cover?
I will post a separate thread on this, but I am also concerned about using the hard drive while out mountain biking. Is that just a non-starter given all of the vibration and indirect impact?

Can't be sure..I wouldn't want to test it....but having said that, my cousin chased someone who stole his Ameo and they deliberately dropped it onto the concrete pavement to avoid a much deserved beating. lol.
It withstood the fall barring a few scratches and still works fine...so who knows for sure. If your truly worried about the Microdrive, why not transfer the GPS software to the Mini SD card?
I know I did, in case I drive over bumpy terrain and suffer the scenario you outlined above. No issues so far for me.
Ameo for outdoor digital mapping
I have the option to test the Ameo (T-Mobile's name for the Athena) for 30 days so will take it out on some rides to test. I am wondering if it makes more sense to continue to use my external Bluetooth GPS receiver since I will want to put my Ameo in sleep mode when I am riding (as opposed to looking at a map) to conserve battery power and protect the hard drive, which I presume will cause the in-built GPS to lose its signal. If that is the case, then every time I stop to look at my map I will have to switch on the unit for hunt for a signal again, whereas if I have the external GPS on all the time (no problem given its long battery life) the Ameo will pick up the coordinates immediately when I switch it on and display my position on the map. I suspect the GPS in the Ameo is better placed for use in a car with constant power supply. It definitely might be useful, however, to have a backup on the SD card. I am not sure that will work for my Memory Map Pocket Navigator though since I need to send a license to my handheld every time I install. How did you manage to do it?
Does anybody know about WAAS/EGNOS support on the Ameo?
I installed GPSInformation and it has a tickbox to enable them, and it seems to say "ok" when you tick it. However, if you quit the app, when you re-run the box is unticked again.
Does this mean you have to enable WAAS everytime you use the GPS receiver?
Does software like Virtual earth, google maps and TomTom etc enable WAAS by default?
had my one day old ameo out mtbing today.
no problems except the internal gps is appalling, it needs direct view of sky, no tree cover at all, with white part facing upwards to get any kind of signal.
maybe I'm doing something wrong...
on my mdapro with bluetooth GPS i would leave memory map running in my gillet pocket with the external in my backpack with no worries.
not tried external with this one yet
I think memory map installs the licence to main memory (maybe a reg key)
As an update to that, after setting both hardware and software ports to none, and turning off the automatic control of gps in the control panel, it's working really well inside the house, and in my pocket.
Battery had dropped 4% after 1hr ride to work, this morning, running mem map & media player. So not bad at all, there were some odd spikes on the mm track record, where I'm presuming the signal got a bit hazy, but other than that good.
Was accurate enough to record when I'd changed lanes on dual carriageway.
Vibration didn't seem to cause any issues, and this was on my recumbent trike, which is prone to loosening fillings..
Do you have a better battery indicator program. The standard one only seems to measure in 10% intervals?
Turn GPS Off?
Out of interest, is the GPS chip always running? If so, is there a way to turn it off? I would hope it only turns on when needed, but just trying to increase battery life...
-Krip
The GPS chip only comes on when you use it. You can see its on because there is an extra flash on the left hand led. You get a GSM flash, then a GPS flash.

Thanks for the tip! Never noticed that before. But your correct, the GSM led blinks twice as fast after starting TomTom.
It also flashes a different colour, I see a green GSM flash, then orange GPS flash. I dont know if it changes again when you have GPS lock, because im inside

I have been using this for a while and now w/ the new radio needing a "primer program" this works great for me!
Now that we all have built in GPS, I would like to introduce you to what I use to start my GPS. I open Navizon, turn on my wifi, and pause till it is open. Then I open my mapping ap (I like Live Search).
Navizon gets started quickly with the cell tower and wifi access point triangulation, and then gets the gps chip going quickly; so live search is ready to go by the time I get in a destination.
Navizon:
http://www.navizon.com
Navizon is a wireless positioning system that works a little bit like a GPS, except it uses Cellular Towers and Wifi access points instead of satellites. In addition to being a wireless position system, Navizon offers features like the Directions, Buddy finder, Geotags and more...
This software relies on a community of users who contribute data to the system (WiFi and Cellular towers) when they have a GPS device. And the cool thing is that we can earn money doing it with the Navizon reward system:
http://www.navizon.com/navizon_rewards.asp
I'm already using it and you could make money too with it if you're interested. All you need is to install it on your phone and have Navizon connected to your GPS. Every Wifi access points that you pass, every cell tower that you log will mean money in your pocket.
So now that we have a phone that is compatible with Navizon, you should really check it out.

If you like the wifi positioning by itself - you can cash in your first $20 payout for the full version, after that it gets popped into your paypal account, and if you turn your friends onto it you can get a little extra too!
In fact, hey birthday boy, Mike (wideawake), why not put a link to this in the help ppcgeeks thread, I bet it would generate a bit of "mad money"!
UPDATE: This is no longer relevant - uncheck load at startup in settings...(edit - I do have one nitpick w/ this ap though; I have to go and delete the ap from the windows/startup folder all the time - I don't need it to start at boot for cryin' out loud! - eh I should make a mortscript to delete it at closing the ap or something..)

Anyone like this, hate this, already use it, I personaly realy like it. I had tried it over a year ago when I had a 6700 and no bluetooth, and didn't have good accuracy, but no programatic problems. Now, I use it everytime I go anywhere at all new, I'm kind of addicted!
Over 350 views, and no responces? Does everyone already use it?
I installed it and kept it running to see how long it would take to drain the battery. My battery went from 97% charged to a low battery warning in about 5.5 hours. That was with the screen turned off, too. The GPS, Wifi, and cellular radio were all enabled during this period.
This app (or, more accurately: the way it uses your hardware) sucks your battery dry, so be sure to have a charger handy.

5.5 hours? you are VERY lucky. it pulled my mogul from 90% to warning about about an hour.
JD
Krap Sakes, it's not for walkin around on a reg basis - the WiFi on the mogul will suck the battery dry quicker than a $20 ho when you give 'er a $50!
(think about it...)
I rarely use it except when I'm driving and plugged in. I might go ahead if I knew I was walking in a prime spot, but to walk around for 5+ hours Navizoning, I would want a car battery! Same as wardriving, it's on the heavier side of what our moguls can do, but it can, so we do!
If I was going to walk with it I might actually consider one of those "Solar Cell" hat things...
I've earned about $80 to my paypal so far just running this on my mogul since I first heard about it...

I signed up under the post obove me, maybe this could become a pyramid scheme...
But after using for a day have found when with wifi, gps & evdo network with verizon the battery drain is crazy. I think the battery gauge even went down while plugged into my hadsfree kit in the car.
Try going into the wifi card settings (start/settings/connections/wireless lan/power settings tab) and set the slider to either the middle setting (what I use) or best battery. Then in the power settings of Navizon and check 'let Navizon manage power', then set the slider to the middle setting. For best power savings you could also set your backlight settings lower (I do this sometimes, not always).
That works pretty well for me, the car charger still makes the power bar go up!
Good luck, and post back your results...
I did both of those setting today and it worked good.
Did find one problem, i removed my handset from the car cradle to use outside the coar for a call that lasted about ten minutes then when i replaced the phone the charging light came on blinking not solid and the battery just kept dropping. After doing some reading found out that phone charging did thermal shutdown because of heat and would not charge battery untill it cooled down.
Seems the wifi, gps and phone call all at same time really start to heat things up.
Especially if you have it it the hot sun i.e. on your dash.
I try to make sure I don't have anything else open as well, the more open, the more battery used.
i installed this today and cant get the program to run without a fatal error

Sprint Touch Information

I am considering trading my Sprint Mogul, for the touch (if it is possible) but am wondering if it is a good idea. The main reason for my trade is that I have recently had a chance to use the touch and like the look, and also my battery on my mogul has recently stopped lasting even half a day, with no usage.
So I just want to know how good is the battery life on the touch and information about its problems and its good features.
Also does anyone know if it is possible to trade my mogul for a sprint touch? I have the total equipment protection plan if that makes any difference.

It will last about a full day, but of course always depends on usage. I use mine to no end! I have FlexMail running all the time, it's my music/video player, my day's outlook, GPS, and of course the usual phone features. If anything, have a car charger handy, as well as a charger at work and home just in case.
Hmm, so its about a full day with heavy usage, while for me, I barley use my phone throughout the day, besides making a few calls and texts, so it should last about 1 1/2 to 2 days. Can anyone else comment about the battery life.

with HEAVY usage i can burn the battery down in about 4-6 hours but that's using bluetooth internet sharing or gps or non stop browsing. But yes it's safe to say with typical heavy usage (taking breaks from the Touch every now and then to check out the real world) it should last a full day. The times when I barely use it, only a couple short calls, a coule of texts, and email checking set for every 5 minutes, it'll last about 2 days. I got cradles with spare battery slots for home and the office and a car charger so battery life is not an issue for me. I also have my backlight set on lowest, but I remapped the camera button to toggle it to full for use in direct sunlight.
One thing to watch out for is signal strength. I had a mogul at first and hated the battery life, until I realized that it was cause I had almost zero service in my room so the mogul was constantly searching and that would drain the battery overnight. I got a cell service repeater for a couple hundred bucks and it boosted the signal in my room a few bars then i stopped having that issue, but i still got rid of my mogul cause i never use the keyboard: i'm a block recognizer user. Plus the Touch's screen is more suited for finger usage since it's completely flush so you can easily touch things in the corners and sides without a stylus. But I'm sure my touch would fair just as badly if i turned off my cell booster, cause there's a dead zone at my office in one of the warehouses and if i stay there too long i can pretty much watch my battery melt before my eyes.
Good luck, you'll definitely love the increased ram.
Thanks for the info, but I don't believe that it is the low signal that has been causing my battery to drain so fast, because up until about this month, my battery would last two days easy, it would be at 70% at the end of the first day, and then 30% at the end of the next day. But now it barley lasts 11 hours even though I havn't moved from my house or changed my habits greatly.
Also i don't have my phone set to check emails automatically or anything, so if i get a touch the battery should last at least two days, making about 2 5 minute calls, and maybe 2 texts, other than that no usage. Because that is what i do with my mogul right now, and it only lasts 11 hours, although before it was 2 days.
Since the battery life seems to be ok, can anyone comment on general usability of the touch? Things like how is it not having keyboard/wi fi, and how many soft resets generally, the speed of the device, and memory usage (although i don't think its a problem with the touch).
Thanks for the help.

Well your battery could've been worn out due to overcharging or manufacturing defect. Either way get a touch I think it's a better phone anyways as long as you can live without physical keys.
yea i edited the post, asking about that and things like ram, using on screen keyboard, speed, gps, and soft resets. What do you think about those kind of things, I have been using spb full screen keyboard on my mogul to see if i don't mind having no physical keyboard, and while i prefer having the keys, the on screen one is usable. But as for soft resets and speed, that kind of stuff is what i can't test right now, so what do u guys think about using it.

This is a non issue for me, I use block recognizer. I've been palm/windows mobile user for probably about 10 years so for me Block Recognizer (Graffiti) is second nature. Accuracy is about 99% assuming I have a good fullsize pen stylus, 95% with the built in stylus, 90% with my finger nail, and 70% with if my nail is cut too short. I can probably average 15-45 wpm depending on what i'm using to write and how much i focus. It's pretty easy to pick up block recognizer or letter recognizer and once you do you'll find it's the fastest most accurate way for a device with this screen size. The only downside I've found is that Microsoft doesn't care about it so it hasn't been upgraded in ages so there's no way to customize the strokes or enter special commands like Cut/Copy/Paste.

I have Sprint Sero so wifi is useless to me. I just use my unlimited data which is pretty fast. It also saves me a bundle since I can just connect to any laptop over bluetooth or usb and use internet sharing. i really impressed my boss the other day when he was in a jam and needed to access the net on his Macbook Air but there was no wifi around. I just pulled out my Touch set up ICS over Bluetooth and connected his mac to it, then put my touch back in my pocket and handed him his MBA and said here you can surf, I set it up to use my phone's internet over bluetooth. He just stared at me for a minute and was like whoa can my iPhone do that. Of course I just laughed and said I guess you're iphone's not that great after all.

Soft resets...due to memory leaks or programs acting up? Almost never. I only really soft reset after I install new programs and I use WisBar so programs are really closed when I hit Close/OK instead of just being minimized. I do a full hard reset probably once every 3-6 months and manually reinstall all my programs to make sure I have the latest versions of everything and just to keep my device clean. Other than that it's pretty stable.

Only other issue to look out for is the storage card corruption issue. When I first got the phone my card used to get corrupted a lot and i'd lose all the data on there. Never figured out exactly why but I think it was due to losing power while the card was being accessed. This could be caused by soft resetting while stuff is being accessed or be card getting momentarily ejected due to it's placement. I used to have most of my programs installed to the card and I would soft reset often. Now just about everything is on main memory and if I have to soft reset I hold the power button down to Power Off then Power back on manually once it's done. Since I started doing that I haven't had a single corruption issue.
Wow, that was a very informative post thanks a ton, ill keep the storage card corruption issue in mind, and install everything on to the main memory, seems like the touch is a pretty stable phone because of its large ram, battery life is good, and using the on screen keyboard seems to be tolerable. only things ill miss is wmwifirouter, and the flash on the camera.

Oh yah the Camera is quite poor if the lighting isn't ideal luckily i rarely use it.
Lack of wifirouter is a bummer but if you're crafty you can connect the phone to a computer with wifi either through cable and bluetooth then set up an ad-hoc network for internet sharing between any number of computers. I prefer using the cable for all that cause bluetooth and constant data usage burns the battery.
Trust me, you will not regret getting the Touch. I've gone through quite a few phones, and this is the best! As mentioned above, the amount of memory is amazing! I have easily installed 25+ apps all on the main memory, which leaves my 8GB SD open for all music, movies, and files. Along with the storage memory, you have a bunch of RAM, with 6-7 heavy apps open, I still have at least 40MB open, which still tops majority of the phones with startup memory.
As for no wifi, if you have an unlimited data connection, then your not losing anything, and I think carriers have this cheaper because of this. I use Spb Full Screen Keyboard, and might get Resco Keyboard, since it's in a package, which is better then having to slide out the keyboard and messing with the screen rotation.
The flush screen definitely does help with the accessibility of the screen. It has bluetooth v2.0.
I think the only thing I don't like is there is no flash.
hmm so it is possible to use bluetooth for internet, is there a tutorial on how to do this with the touch, so that when I get mine, i can do it, still not as good as wifirouter, but it will work with some devices.

Yes you can connect your phone to your computer over bluetooth (or USB) and then surf on your computer using your phones data plan. And if you really want you can create an ad-hoc wireless network to share internet to muliple computers over wifi.
Connecting your phone to your computer is easy. Just open up Internet Connection Sharing, then choose USB or Bluetooth, then press Connect. You if you get an error about registration or passwords use google to solve it. If using USB plug into your computer and the first time it'll log up the necessary drivers, if you've already installed Windows Mobile Device Center or the latest version of ActiveSync it'll have the necessary drivers. If using Bluetooth search for a new bluetooth device on your desktop, select your phone follow the prompts to connect. It should add it as a Bluetooth PAN device.
To setup the ad hoc wireless network varies greatly depending on OS, use google to find a good guide.

Fliers beware, Flight Mode not working!

I am an airline pilot and noticed a bug with my HD. It seems that after putting the phone in Flight Mode, it is not turning off the "radio" every time. During flight I clip my holster/phone fairly close to where my aviation headset cord is routed so I know immediately if my phone is not turned off as I can hear the GPRS data transfer clicking through the headset.
I have tried "Flight Mode" and "Phone Off" but it only works some of the time. Amazingly, the screen shows an X for the radio and an X for my Edge connection but there is no question that the radio is still on. The radio is only turning off about 30% of the time from what I can tell. On one occasion, after putting it in flight mode and seeing the X's, I was able to place a call (although again, not every time)
Another good indicator that this is happening is when I turn the radio back on (turn flight mode off) the signal indicator pops up almost immediately. Normally after turning the radio on it takes about 10-15 seconds to connect to the system so I believe it never disconnected to begin with.
Thankfully, the new full power-down method of holding the power switch in is coming in handy until I can figure this out. I will experiment a little more on my next trip.
Kind of funny when the Captain is not complying with the Flight Attendants instructions to turn of those damn cell phones!!
Any one else notice this?

Is it really necessary to turn off mobile phone these days? I might have mistaken, but recall reading somewhere that some airlines are going to permit the use of mobile phone as they don't really affect safety. True or false? Or it is just rumours?

The USA has made it clear that it will not approve the use of cell phones in flight because not enough in known about what potential problems may exist if allowed to do so. In Europe, some countries have approved a "Pico Cell" system that places a cell repeater, or effectively a cell tower, on the aircraft so cell phones using the system will throttle to their lowest setting. Since all new cell phones can adjust their power/signal output in response to their proximity to a cell site, airborne phones attempting to communicate with ground towers pose the greatest threat to aircraft systems. There has even been some discussion of putting a Pico Cell on aircraft to throttle back phones that have been left on inadvertently just to lessen the chance of interference.
I will admit that my phone can impede my ability to hear the air traffic controllers if my phone is on and I can also tell if a controller has their phone near their headset jack. It is not uncommon to hear the telltale clicking of a GSM phone receiving a call or pinging a cell tower while talking to someone on the aircraft radio.
As I fly a rather advanced commercial jet, I have seen a noticeable increase in system "anomalies" over the years (most just nuisance stuff, not dangerous!) but the big question begs: Do you REALLY want to take a chance? I am an advanced techno geek and licensed aircraft mechanic and I am the first to make sure my phone is off.
For Flight Attendants it has become a nightmare of electronic gadgets on every flight and they are just complying with regulations when bugging passengers. Their concern is someone from the FAA might be on board and may notice that they are not enforcing the regulation and get violated. My worry is something eventually may happen that can be attributed to the use of PED's (Portable Electronic Devices) causing a ban on carrying PEDs as a shotgun method to make sure it is turned off.

dang! i had a similar experience today while we were preparing for takeoff. i put the HD in flight mode, put the phone in my shirt pocket, somehow dialed voicemail and i could hear the voice prompts. fortunately, we hadn't taken off yet so i just powered off the phone. i don't know if it was delayed going into airplane mode or not. an hour into the flight i turned the HD on and had no issues with it in flight mode.
Thanks for your very detailed explanation. Appreciate it.
Does it not also pose danger if we just change the setting to flight mode then? Or is it just the GSM portion that is giving the interference?
So, as long as it is in flight mode, we can safely use the "non-phone" features such as game, word procesing, dictionary, etc, right?
I had always wanted to know, because in the past, I had received different information from the flight attendants. Some of them would want me to stop using my PDA all together, while some did not seem to be bothered.
Glad to have two commercial pilots here to give us authoritative information.
Another question that I have is, if an HD with flight mode on does not completely disable the GSM signal as it should, would the interference be significant enough since we're so far from the cockpit?
If the interference of a passenger HD with flight mode on is still emitting significant interference despite the distance from the cockpit, then I think we have an issue that must be brought to HTC's attention. If this is the only handset with this problem, should that require a recall by HTC???!!
Gordo, have you tried getting one of your flight attendence to bring your HD with flight mode on to the passenger cabin and see if the interference is still there?
Whatever is the FAA and JAA tolerance - it looks a real bug. I am a private pilot and constantly kept on the GSM as an additional security in case the aircraft radio or headset would go bad - to call the tower. the tickling of the GSM on the headset is a bit annoying, but since we fly at much lower altitudes than commercial aircrafts we are probably within the field of the GSM cells and switching between them at more reasonable rate.
Indeed, I also noticed that newer TAA (technologically advanced aircrafts), like the diamond da40 with G1000 Garmin glass cockpits, explicitly say in the AFM (aircraft flight manual) to switch off GSM or electronic devices since they COULD interfere with the on-board electronics. Notice that here we are speaking of few GSMs phones, not hundreds like in the case of Gordo which is definitely frightening: in a 747 you could have 1.6 kW of GSM radio emission!!! it could almost heat up the aluminum skin of the fuselage
Let me try to play with the registry and check how to do it. I cannot believe it is hardware related...

The HD is not unique with regard to possible interference and my earlier description of interference from my phone (or my co-pilots phone) is noticeable only within a few feet of my aviation headset.
Use of the PED with the cell phone off (PDA part on) is considered safe during cruise flight. They ask that ALL electronic devices be turned off (including electronic noise canceling headphones eg: Bose) while operating in close proximity to the ground since takeoff and landing is classified as a "critical phase of flight". Heck, we are not even allowed to "chit-chat" on the flight deck until above 10,000 feet because of the importance of being vigilant on the task at hand.
The greatest concern from passenger phones is their proximity to navigational and communication antennas on the top and bottom of the aircraft and the proximity to the Avionics Bay (big room of system computers, navigation radios, communication radios). Each aircraft is configured differently and even though each system/computer is shielded from EMF and even EMP, the big issue is at what point can PED's break through those defenses?
As for my HD, I am just trying to understand why it looks like the radio and GPRS is off but, in fact, it remains on in many instances. I have only had my HD on one 4 day trip and noticed the problem on the last couple of flights so I intend to do more testing to find the best way to reproduce the anomaly. I might just bring my sons TMobile phone with me and place calls to the HD to find out if I can hear the interference in my headset while safely at the gate.
I am passing this on so you won't get an angry tongue lashing from an FA when your phone starts ringing during the takeoff roll after you though it was off!
I have to pass this story on also. In the early 90's (way before PED's and cell phones) I was operating a flight from Atlanta to Cincinnati and at cruise flight a very loud buzzing was heard from our radios. My co-pilot and I tried everything to establish communication with controllers but we could hear nothing through the loud buzz. After several minutes of trying different radios and frequencies, I called the lead Flight Attendant to walk through the cabin and see if anyone was using some kind of electronic device. A minute later the buzzing stopped and the FA called to say the only thing she found was a passenger using a 1960's vintage electric shaver in the aft lavatory. Turns out this old shaver had a brush type motor that emitted so much EMI that it rendered our radios useless! Of course, I submitted a safety report to our union over that.

Thanks for your response and posts gentlemen. I find the information fascinating.
I'm also relieved that other than during take off and landing, we can still use our beloved HD, provided we set it to flight mode.
I will be sure to turn off my HD completely until HTC releases a fix.
And thank you for answering the off topic questions! I have always wondered how cell phones could be so critical to the plane's operation. I have especially wondered how it is OK to have PED's turned on during the flight, but not during take off and landing - thank you for clearing this up.
Oh, another question from one who has played some Flight Simulator a few years back. Sorry if it's a stupid one. When do you use VFR, and when do you use IFR? Is it, for instance, the way that you mainly use VFR as the rule of the thumb, and IFR is only used when needed (or vice versa)?
If HD is not unique in this regard, I doubt there will be a fix. After all, HTC could argue that we're supposed to turn them completely off during take off and landing anyway. Not sure if there is a need to completely turn them off mid air, but from I'm hearing, there is no need to go to that extreme. I supposed it would be preferable to do so, but I think airlines would not impose any unnecessary rules on the passenger from marketing viewpoint.
Would the professionals please correct me if I'm wrong, thanks.

Hmmm, this is an interesting discovery. I wonder if it will switch off by toggling the "phone" radio button in the Connection Manager?

Visual Flight Rules are used when the weather at an airport has clouds not closer than 1000 feet above the ground and the visibility is not less than 3 miles. Once airborne, VFR rules require (in general) that you stay a minimum of 500 feet below, 1000 above and 2000 feet horizontally from any clouds. If you are IFR rated (Instrument Rated=licensed to fly in weather less than listed above), you file an IFR flight plan and can then play in the clouds! People get confused between what is considered VFR/IFR conditions versus VFR/IFR flight regulations/procedures. John F Kennedy Jr. died while flying in VFR conditions (hazy with 5 miles visibility and no clouds) but over the ocean with no lights at night and no outside visual references, he needed IFR skills that he didn't have and thus lost control and crashed. Another 20 hours of IFR training towards his Instrument Rating would have given him the skills needed to fly solely by reference to his instruments. Non IR Private Pilots only get instrument training needed to get out of a cloud if one is flown into inadvertently, not sustained flight while multi-tasking/navigating.

That is what I am noticing, Flight Mode or the Phone button in CM are not turning off the "phone" although it looks as if it is off. My guess is the UI gets the command but the radio does not. I also have PhoneAlarm installed and will try that flight mode also but I really like the "Phone Disconnect" (full right button) long press that brings up the dialog box to turn on flight mode. It is quick and easy but doesn't seem to do the job every time.

Hi,
I don't know if anyone from HTC reads this forum, but has anyone reported this problem to them, as it seems a pretty serious bug!
A bug report may have some extra weight coming from a commercial pilot too!
Cheers,
Ben

Most airlines I travel on specifically allow phones and PDAs in 'flight mode' to be used during the flight (even the safety videos say: put your phone in 'flight mode' now before switching it off for take-off).
However it if turned out that 'flight mode' on lots of devices wasn't turning off the radios, then maybe they will withdraw permission for ANY use of your devices during the flight.
From a purely PR perspective, I don't think a company like HTC would dare not fix a bug like this. They presumably wouldn't want their products to be associated with any doubts over causing problems with air safety.
There is also the 'trade description' aspect. If they advertise a working 'flight mode' on their sales materials, then they have to provide it, or will be in breach of consumer laws (at least in some countries).
I do think that anyone who has experienced this problem should report it to HTC, and refer them to this thread too.

Air Carriers actually have gone a long way to permit as much as possible the use of PED's during the cruise part of the flight, (as a courtesy to Bussiness/first class pax mainly) but "transmitting" devices are fully forbidden, to the point of detailing even Bluetooth (mouse, headsets) devices. So I consider this a serious bug.
Hopefully we will get a fix, but I will check during my next flight, since I too had noticed the "surprisingly fast" signal pick up time.
If HD is not unique is this, should'nt the airline simply forbid the switching on completely rather than allowing the flight mode during take off and landing? Airline can't take the chance that some device are not completely stopping some of signal being transmitted IF it is true that this level of transmission affects take off and landing.
Unless I'm wrong, the impression I'm getting is that once the phone moves a few feet away from the pilot, then at flight mode, they will not be affected. Yes? No?

From directly affecting the pilots communication headsets, you are probable correct, however the real issue is the cabin has many areas in close proximity to antennas on the top and bottom of the fuselage, cable runs under the cabin floor, and avionics equipment/computers.
Interesting report here:
http://www.spectrum.ieee.org/print/3069
and from NASA

It really seems that most likely a single cell phone left on may not cause trouble but the Airbus A380 holds over 500 passengers....what if one in five leave their cell phone radios on (including Bluetooth and WiFi transmitters) and are using 100 laptops, video games, noise canceling stereo headphones, etc. You get the idea, just read the first link above and you will understand.
Sorry to stray off topic a little here but I would really like to get more info from HD users if they think their phone/data transmitter is not turning off even though it looks like it is. I am trying to reliably reproduce the problem so I can find a remedy and not contend with annoying GSM clicks in my headset after we push from the gate and get scolded from my co-pilot that I forgot to turn off my phone (he/she can also hear the clicking through the intercom we use when that happens).
Regards,
Gordo
have you guys tried to just turn off the radio manually in comm manager instead of using airplane mode? Just wondering if that works instead.
For you that carry a GSM phone in the plane in case of a radio failure, beware that the GSM system was designed to allow communication in terrestrial vehicles, not in planes and it is affected by Doppler effect. If you are running faster than 200Km/h respect to the base station, the frequency tracking loop of the GSM cannot correct the Doppler offset, so you could not place a call to ground. With the airborne picocell it is different because it is not moving with respect to the passengers.
The bug you refer about the flight mode I think It's reallly a software bug. Switching off the radio chipset is very easy form a software point of view, all radio chips have registers that can be adressed by the processor to make them enter in power down or sleep conditions. (this is how the handset saves battery power). However, Windows Mobile is built on the premises that a IP data link is always available. This is a heritage from desktop computers. If your phone is configured to be always connected to the GPRS service (a G or 3G or H letter is present above the signal strength indicator), some applications which require "always on" feature like MSN, may try to connect to the data network "disregarding" the status of flight mode. You can try to open the task manager before setting the phone to flight mode and close all applications, to make sure you kill all processes that try to acces the network, not only the phone application, which is just one of them. In any case, a firmware update could fix this problem, I don't think they need to recall the devices.

HD2 overheating, not charging and rebooting - temperature monitoring

During the last week I experienced some strange behaviour on my HD2. I want to point out that in general I am very happy with it, but now I wonder whether my device is faulty or weather this is a feature.
What I have seen:
- my device had some sudden reboots when using it in my car, charging with car charger
- this happens only when outside temeperature is close to 30 degrees C or above
- it happens after some time (10 - 15 min) using Navigon or even just doing Bluetooth calls
- it usually stops charging the device, the LED is then blinking green & orange, then reboot
- I recognize that the device is very hot
- after cooling down it has lost the power settings
I found two other threads dealings with similiar effects
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=707477
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=627884
and now want to do some detailed anaylsis here. I installed BattClock (great tool!)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=612083
to monitor the battery temparatur and found the following:
- idle phone (office, not charging, 3G connect, push mail activated): 25 - 30°C
- phone in use (office, not charging, checking mails etc): 30 - 34°
- idle charging (as idle phone, plus charging): 30 - 34°
- phone in use, charging in car, summer temp 28°): temperuture rises up to 47°
The last case ended with a reboot, when coming up again the temperature was 47.1 degrees, green / orange was bblinking and charging has stopped. Before crashing the temperature raised from 33 to 47° within 15 minutes.
Can anybody confirm whether he can run the HD2 wíth 47° and above? I would like to understand whether I shoul return my phone under warranty or whether this is a feature. 47° is high - though I do not think too high??? I also got the impression that this issue is coming up more and more frequently with my phone and as the summer just has started this could mean I need to stop charging while driving. How to use navigation?
Any comments or ideas?
Regards Hase
Well Hase,
I've seen this a few times in the past when driving running CoPilot, Bluetooth, screen bright and charging.
In the last week, with a new ROM base and significantly warmer weather, I've seen this with just having the phone in the car charging.
Very interested (and actively hunting) a manual underclock to see if it helps.
I don't think this is a defect, but it does happen.
I've noticed it too a alot during the NE heatwave in the US.
I'm waiting it out for now.
47C is not too hot though, although maybe there could be some kind of feature with the processor?
Yeah I've noticed it too. I was driving in my car running Bing Navigation with no problems for about 2 hours with the windows up and the ac on in my car. 10 minutes after I opened the windows when it was 101 F outside bing maps would randomly shut down and other apps would not even open. Closed the windows cranked the ac and held my phone in front of the vent to cool down and it went back to normal without even having to soft reset. Seems like a feature to prevent damage to the phone.
I would guess its some overheat protection feature with the processor, as its really the latest, which means sometimes it may get too hot ( you know, 1GHZ is really fast and thus may generate much more hrest than normal slower processors ) . Just like Intel's processors, which also shut off when the temperature rises over a certain programmed known "safe" temperature and reboots the computer, in hope that when its started again, it would be cooler. As for battery temperature, the cpu may be even hotter than the battery's temperature and thus it may seem that the phone shut off at a low temperature, but in actual, the processor is REALLY hot. And as its a mobile processor and its known that the second hottest factor is charging/discharging the battery, charging may be temporarily disabled until it cools down to a "safe" temperature to prevent overheating/buring out other components. But that's just what I think. Best to check with Qualcomm or HTC if possible as it may also be a defect in the phone. Hope this helps.
I haven't experienced any reboots but I have had problems with my HD2 locking up due to excessive heat.
Leaving it in direct sunlight means I'm unable to unlock the phone due to the lack of response from the screen.
Yesterday my HD2 was charging in its cradle and wi-fi was on. The device got hot and became unresponsive and I ended up putting it in the fridge for 10 mins which brought it back to life.
The HD2 definitely has an issue with high temps, the screen in particular.

Have you tried LeoCpuSpeed?
I have had this problam as well. It also happened with my Touch Pro 2 when in the car, sun, Copilot, etc...
My fix was kind of a lucky guess. I have AC vents that blow on the windows of the doors when it is on the defrost setting. I just have the windshield mount sitting kind of over the vent for the drivers window. It is not quite in a direct line with the window, but enough AC comes out of it to get to the device and cool it.
When I do this, it goes from a rather toasty to the touch to rather cold actually. Even with the rubber "case" on it it keeps it down to a reasonable temp, if not below, with it charging, GPS going, bluetooth stereo and WMP all going.
Since popping it into the airflow it has not even gotten warm let alone started the warning flashes and such.
Kind of an obvious one, but those are the most often overlooked so I figured I would add it in.

In fact that was my solution too. I changed my cradle using one putting the HD2 in front of an AC outlet and now everything is fine. Just make sure the lower part of the HD2 where the USB cable is connected is not covered by the cradle or any cover as this is the place where the cold wind has to blow. Battery temp remains well below 30° C, if driving longer distances even below 20°. I am not sure whether I will get too low? And I do not now yet what will happen in winter when we get it freezing cold and heating will step in.

Does anybody have tried underclocking yet? Would be good to now whether this could be an option too. Sometimes even using the HD2 on hot days (without charging!) gets the temp up to 38° C plus. Best thing is not to hold it on the lower part.
I am wondering that still only some people get this problems. Either everybody is ACed (not poss in my convertable) or the problem is only with some HD2 or some ROM. Has anybody noticed any other strange behaviour after an overheating occured? I noticed some issues during the last months which I could not yet connect to any other reason. I am not sure whether I have had overheating bevor these occured the first time:
- all of a sudden bluetooth connex to my car was not poss any more
- all of a sudden pocket xls application and the note application got very very slow
- all of a sudden POP connect to google Mail did not show any mails any more.
These effects did not show up the first time all together, they came one after another, one per month since March. And probably I have had overheating earlier without even noticing it
Regards Hase
Hi, i have the same problem with overheating ... it stop charging when Battery Temperature reach 45°C. Battery PINS are all OK and clean
First : My Leo has Radio 2.11 (2.12 same problem)
OEM 2.10 (My own ROM)
Today Test : Go back to original ROM 1.66 (Radio 2.06) and my HD2 does not overheat ! Strange
I can see with PowerGuard that the charging current slow down when the temperature go up and reach max 42.3°C
Tomorrow Test : Radio 2.06 and my ROM with OEM 2.10 ... if do not overheat then i try with Radio 2.08 (more RAM ... TMOUS) ....
to be continued ...
Today Test with Original Firmware 1.66 and Radio 2.06 has problem too
Ordered new original Battery from Brack.ch ... when battery comes make new test to see if it's the battery or HD2.
Strange is that the battery is not so hot but the charge circuit of the HD2 is very Hot. (Hottest place is between SD CARD and SIM Card)

Hello,
I experienced the same sudden shut downs (not reboots) during the last days as well ("hopefully" only due to the very hot weather). And none of my POP3 account seem to work right now!
The internet connectivity seems to be okay, and of course I haven't changes any mail settings... but I cannot receive or send any mails. I get no error message when I try to receive mails but when I click on the new mail button my HD2 asks me to set up a new mail connection!
Any solution found to this problem?
Kind Regards,
DW!

On my side the problem is a bit different. POP3 seems to work fine (also no errors) but does not receive mails. Sending is o.k. And this problem is only with gmail, other accounts work like before.
What about pxl on your device?

What do you mean? What's "pxl"?
Do you already tried to set up the account from scratch again? That's what I intent to try later at home...

PXL is Microsoft Excel on Windows Mobile. On my HD2 it takes about 2 minutes now until it open either the list of xls files or a dedicated xls.

Yes I did, but with the same result, does not receive emails...
I had my HD2 heat up to about 48degs when in use while charging it. No problems encountered. Perhaps its defective. Send to HTC for repair?

Hmmm, that's no problem on my HD2 - Mobile Excel is opening as fast as ever...
I have now deleted 2 of my 4 mail accounts and re-installed them; the other 2 I simply have re-installed withour prior erasure - and this seem to do the job! Indeed I have done this more than once now, but 3 accounts now already received test mails... the 4th is a freemail account which I can only use every 15min. via POP3/IMAP...

But what was the outside temperature? I think the overheating has to do mainly with using the phone (gps) while charging in a hot environment inside of a car.
Just charging the phone shouldn't use the processor to any significant point.
Just my $.02.
I could not believe it what I read here, but now the high temperatures in Austria caused the same problems on my HD2 when navigating in my car. HD2 after 2-5 minutes blinks orange-green (no loading) and after maximum 10-15 minutes crashes.
Unfortunately I have to rely on navi-function for my upcoming vacation. No solution to place the HD2 in AC-stream in my car with this stupid original HTC-Car-Navi-Holder.
When driving in the heat of noon I don´t even have to switch it on, just mounting into the loading-cradle is enough to make the HD2 crash after 10-15 minutes, only 3G on, nothing else (no BT, WiFi, HSPA, no app running etc.)
Until now I was quite satisfied with the HD2, had no crashes or malfunctions so far, but now I am really fed up with this piece of sh.. and I don´t think there will be a hardware or software-solution (except swichting it off) since the HD2 is malconstructed.
This was the last time I bought a HTC product ............... Crap at a high price I can have with an iPhone too ................
