Yes, another wifi problem thread... - 8125, K-JAM, P4300, MDA Vario General

So, I spent all morning unlocking my MDA, and was hoping it would correct my wifi issues even though it didn't make much sense to assume this... Once I flashed the tmobile 2.26 rom back to the device, I was able to conenct to my home router and pull web pages. I had reset my router settings and have left it wide open while testing the issues. I connected one time, viewed a few pages, and then disconnected. Now, I can still "connect" the the router, but cannot access anything through it like pulling web pages or downloading email. I do get an IP address assigned, and I do get good signal strength.
I have searched endlessly here, and have heard something about upgrading the radio rom...? Is that what I need? And if it is, I still had issues finding this rom to install. I have a G3 MDA on TMobile USA, currently using the TMobile 2.26 rom, IPL/SPL are both 2.26. Thanks for any info...

I was just reading that post about the 5.99 t-zones... and saw that you had posted about the t-mobile settings. Do you have your internet settings set up to use the t-mobile proxy? If you do, you have to remove the proxy before being able to connect over wifi.

Are you kidding me? I cannot believe I have never noticed this. It worked immediately. We have a wireless ap here, and as soon as I removed the check mark for the proxy, it works fine. I am sure there is a way but I'll ask, can there me multiple settings setup so I do not have to go in and enable/disable the proxy everytime?

Yah, thats easy to do. Just go to connections settings and click on add a new modem connection and set it up the same way as the t-mobile connection just don't have it use a proxy. The only problem is that you still have to go to your connection settings and switch the network selection when you want to change back and forth.
There's also another way if you have batterystatus installed, it has an option to disable proxy if wifi is enabled. I'm not sure if it actually works or not, I've never gotten around to trying it out yet. I'm assuming that it does though because I keep up on the batterystatus thread and I haven't seen that being mentioned as a bug recently.
One other thing, if you want to connect to the internet over activesync you also have to disable the proxy. I asked Ikarus if he'd add disableing the proxy over activesync as an option to batterystatus also and he said he'd think about it. It'd be nice, but it'd pretty much only be useful to people that have t-mobile so I doubt he'll add it any time soon.

Now thats even weirder as I had no problem with the active sync internet connection. I will play around with the multiple connections method, and also try the batterystatus tool... Do you know if this is still a problem with any of the WM6 roms? I have been reading up on those and am ready to either try one of the precooked ones or cookin my own...

Yah, it's still an issue with WM6. I have a direct link to the connection settings in cLaunch on my today screen though which makes it a whole lot easier to switch back and forth.
The way I started out with WM6 was to flash a precooked rom (xm6) and spent a week or 2 getting to know all of the apps that were installed and whether or not I thought I'd use them and also figureing out if they still had bugs or not and then I went and cooked my own rom. It made it a whole lot easier and I was able to cook only the things I wanted in to it without having all the extra things in it I didn't.

Yeah, I have been all over the upgrading and wm6 forum. I have a week vacation coming up, maybe I'll make a "recipe" then....

Does wifi turn on? (Does the left LED blink like it does when wifi is turned on?)
If not, then it could be related to a cingular cab - did you install any of the cabs from the original cingular extended rom?
left led does blink.
ive also gotten as far as picking up a network.
i have tried everything, i cannot get my wifi to work at all. i dont know whats up.
the settings i needed (which i replicated for the new rom) on the old rom, was this
I would select networks, MY work network, this connects to the internet.
then in the WLAN adapter i had to manual enter my dns servers.
thats pretty much it to get it to work, but now with this rom it wont
Similar or different problem? Not sure. PARTLY SOLVED!

Hi NG,
I updated my O2 XDA mini s (German) from OS 1.3.4.2 to 2.16.9.1. (Radio 02.07.10 included). To be honest, I was never really happy with the quality and reliabilty of the radio. 4 out of 5 times it did work, but once in a while, especially while roaming, it gave me a headache. After unlocking and updating to the new version, WLAN looks to be working quite well, at least for connecting to access points, but it seems that it can't browse external websites. VXutils give back a socket error trying to access external (outside my home network) websites/Email.
Internal (inside my home network) connections work like a charm. Termincal Services client accesses my Win2003 Server no problem and I can also connect to a website hosted on my internal server. (http://servername:port).
Whenever I try to connect to external sources, the browser stops afer not successfully "locating" the respective server. On the other hand locating might not be the problem. Performing a ping to an external site with VXutils properly picks up the right ip address but cannot send/receive ping!
GPRS works as supposed. Can connect to sites with no problem.
May be somebody experiences the same problem or, even better, has a solution.
By the way I used @Work for all possible settings. The work profile is set up for both connection types.
Besides that, the new rom is really nice
EDIT Well after some time playing around, I have solved the problem or better the problem partly disapeared. In 'Settings' 'Network Adapters' I switched from Use server-assigned IP address to manual and entered IP, DNS, Gateway, etc. With these settings it everything worked after a soft-reset. Going back to DHCP and soft-reset, it first worked an now it doesn't anymore. At least there is a work around and I'm trying now some other things. All machines currently work with the DHCP settings correct. I will check and keep you updated if the problems comes from Server settings or from something in the PDA EDIT

Danrw. Concerning the registry settings, after patching the os I did change the registry settings. One already existed with the right value as shown in the 802.11g thread. The other one, DotG, I added.
After that, it did pick up a only G router!
As far as setting DNS manually. It is not enough to just cange the dns setting. You have to enter all the information and even after a soft-reset it takes some time to have the settings picked up... Use vxUTIL 'Info'-Screen to check the current settings. I did test wlan before and after applying packages from the extended rom. No change on reliability or performance on WLAN IMHO.
As far as I understand. Your problem is actually connecting to the router/Access Point. For testing please disable all security on your router and do a soft-reset before trying to access. Also since we have heard of several problems with model 9100 not realizing if an access point is available or not. Also change the SSID of your router and if possible the MAC Address of the router.
Don't forget to soft-reset and first try SDIO Adapter inyour pda with auto IP/DNS/etc. settings.
Another thought. Embarassing, but once I messed around with trying to get a new pda online and forgot to disable the mac filter settings in the router, which resulted in being able to see the active router but it didn't let me connect. After those two days I was missing a lot of hair.
Good luck

I did but only the minimum. I trimmed down their install to the basics. I narrowed it down to one of two CABs. Either the gprsstall or EnableEONS. I didn't install either of those and I"m now back up and running. Of course, I still can't get it to prefer WiFi to EDGE.
I had experienced the same problem with home wifi network after upgrading my rom. I saw in my laptop that the key was set to 2. I went to the network cards, clicked on my wifi network, and under Network Key swithed the value from 1 to 2. I can now connect to my wifi network at home.

I do not know if my solution will work for you because I upgraded my rom to 2.16 but lets give it a try. I use d-link DI-524 wifi router. Start menu > Settings > Connections (tab) > Network Cards [I must admit earlier today when I was trying to connect my k-jam to the wifi, I did get as far as it asking me for my authentication code and afterwards it timed-out] --> select your wifi network [at this moment as I'm trying this out my wifi on my k-jam is off] --> Network Key (tab) > it was the key index that I had to change from 1 to 2. Before doing this though, go to your router's wireless configuration page through your webbrowser and make sure the keyX (it looks for d-link this can be from key1 to key4 or at least on mine) and make sure the key index you select on your mda is the same number that is used on your router for code authentication.
Also I noticed after resetting my k-jam that I could get connected to my wifi but I could not surf, in wifi setting on my k-jam I had to hit renew ip and then I was able to surf.
I hope this works for you. Good luck and many late nights.
no luck with this for me
even tried removing wep all together. tried multiple routers.
i can detect the ssid's, but i cant connect to them. times out on the connect.
Mine worked no problem...you may already have had this suggestion but here was my process.
Unlocked with lokwiz
Upgraded
Reset before extended ROM apps installed
Installed total commander
deleted extended ROM
Upgraded again
i re-installed the CINGULAR ROM and WiFi works like a charm
......any clues?
Here's what I ended up finding out for mine. First, at the time I wrote this, I was running the 2.16 ROM. Now I'm running the 2.17, but the fix is the same with either.
Don't load the cingular add-ins GPRSSTALL or EONS. I narrowed it down to those two that were causing the issue. So, the only ones I install now are CingularMMSAccount, EdgeIcon, TimeStyle, WiFiRate4, and SmartDialingEnable. Thats it, and its all I've seen to be necessary from Cingular's little bundle 'o fun. Everything else I haven't found interferes with my ability to use the phone at all.
Hope this helps...

(8525) Wifi and GPRS/UMTS Connection...

I don't know what is going on but when I'm at home, I woud usually be connected to UMTS/GPRS. Of course, having wifi at home, I would rather use that (speedwise) but when I turn on wifi, I notice that I would be connected to both WIFI and UMTS/GPRS.
FIRST QUESTION:
Which am I utilizing? UMTS/GPRS or WIFI?
Now, considering that I "THINK" I'm using wifi, I would launch PIE and to go to a website, it takes forever...... The task bar keeps saying locating. I have to literally wait and wait before I get to the website.
SECOND QUESTION:
What is going on here?
At any rate, if I turn WIFI off and I'm just connected to GPRS/UMTS, I can browse using PIE without any problems. No "locating..." etc. or waiting.
Please help!

While on wifi you can temporarily turn off GPRS using connections hard key below on/off hard key. Just tap on the icon that looks like a pda with two arrows. When off wifi reconnect GPRS using connections in settings menu.
Mike.
Ok. goodie. I was able to shut off the GPRS.
Now I launched internet explorer. The only connection that I'm connected to is my wifi. Still the taskbar is saying "Locating.." taking forever to go anywhere.

In Start>Settings>connections there is an option "edit my proxy server" and within this lots of options.
I will have a different provider from you so don't know what settings should be there. I am also not an expert on this so hopefully someone who is will jump in with some info on this.
One person I was posting with queried why their wifi connection needed any proxy settings as they were not connecting through to their mobile operator but to their home broadband connection. However when they tweaked a setting here their Wifi suddenly started working. See Mariete's last post here:

We need someone with more knowledge!! Anyone?

Well for one thing, there is no setting for proxy server. Even then when i did find anything to do with proxy server, it is not even activated.
Next..
Phew...Someone else with the same EXACT issue. I was on with Cingular/HTC support today and they really didn't help. I will keep trying new things and checking back to this thread to see if anyone else thinks of an idea.
I have a Apple Airport (802.11g) with no security settings. I have a few laptops on the network and friends who can connect their laptops without any issues.
I actually got tired of this issue. I downloaded and bought netfront. It was something I was going to buy anyway. So after installing it, I tried it again and this time, it goes to the website flawlessly. It must be something to do with IE.
On the other hand, I'm having some issues with shutting down the GPRS again. It keeps turning on automatically.

everyone make sure they arent on their providers connection that utilizes the proxy.. i dont know about any provider except cingular.. when using wifi stay off MEDIA NET.. everyone's best bet is to make sure they are on the connection for MY ISP, go to settings, connections, connections, advanced, select networks, change the drop down to MY ISP. also make sure wifi is off before doing this, after changing to my isp then turn wifi back on and you should be ok...

Absolutely fantastic!!!
Hi All,
First of all, let me tell you that I was also suffering from the same problem of MediaNet proxy settings. I've done the same changes asked by "shogunmark" which really sounds good logicaly. And my wifi connection started working miraculously! Yes, it is miracle for me as I am trying to connect to WiFi for last 3 days! Thanks a lot again...
I got it to work as well. However, I couldn't use "My ISP" connection as it was pointing to a Cingular domain. I ended up creating a new one called Home and it works fine. I do have a question. Under Settings/Connections/Connections/Advanced/Select Networks...
What does everyone have selected in both drop downs? I had to select my new Home connection for both to get WIFI to work.
that cingular domain/AP is only used for edge/3G data with no proxy.. this is why this is used for wifi.. theoretically MEdia net would work if it didnt have the proxy... but the phone doesnt look at the AP name when on wifi, only the proxy, you shouldnt have needed to create a new connection!

ok, so I should be able to keep Media Net on the top drop down and My ISP on the second drop down? I assume I should just be able to use the Comm Manager to switch between WIFI and the Cingular Data Connections?

Cingular 8525 Wi-Fi issues

I've been having a bugger of a time with the Wi-Fi on my 8525. I keep getting a response that the WEP key is incorrect. I was able to connect once, and have since deleted my settings that the Wi-Fi network, but nothing I'm trying seems to get me connected.
Any ideas?

I had a problem with my Wifi working when I first got the phone. But since I wanted to SuperCid the phone I had to downgrade the IPL to do so. I re flashed to the same Cingular 1.34 with IPL 1.06. Since then I have not had any problems with the Wifi.

Here's a thought. Why not try the Hitchhiker application. It tends to get round quite a few issues in set up. Also once you've got it working and connected to Wifi you can close it down if you wan to and you'll find it has saved correct settings for your normal way of connecting to wifi. Another benefit is that you can cut the wep key from a text document and paste it into the box it gives you (saves a lot of hassle whenever you need to re-enter the key - which in my case is 28 letters digits long!!) WM5 box as you may have discovered does not allow wep pasting!!
You need to have .netframework installed as well byt the link I give you also has a link for that as well:
http://www.kasuei.com/hitchhiker/

i recently got att 8525 but i havent able to connect wifi with my home network. it asks for wep key, then shows connecting to network and after a while shows wrong network key...no success so far...i even tried the abive hitchhiker sf and all but no luck...has anyone come up with any solution??? i had np connecting 8125 b4...!!!
btw i use wm5 and the most recent att rom update posted on htc site...
hoping for some solution...
I have similar problem too with my cingular 8525. I unlock it to work with t-mobile and also upgrade to wm6 . Now, I can not connect to my home wlan. If I click on wlan, it show my wireless network. But if I click on internet explorer, it show me the default internet window explorer with at & t and window mobile icons. when I click on either one, it take me to media net log in screen. help me
ok, i dont know how but my wifi started working last night!!! b4 it always looked for IP address and eventually disconnects b4 connecting to home network. so i installed "hitchhiker" but no luck either...so i uninstalled and then tried but this time it said connected to network and as soon as i open IE, it disconnects...it looked like wifi connects but then disconnects or timeout due to power settings, so i changed power settings under wifi settings to best performance and now it just connects right away...

Thank You Thank you Thank You. I've been at this for a few days now. It would have to be that simple.
Just remember you need to run the remove proxy cab file if proxy is has been set to use GPRS/WAP. Also make sure the right network interface is selected - like work uses 802.11 etc..

WiFi Down...?

I recently went through my wizard and modified the internet settings to allow me to connect through GPRS on T-Mobile's $5.99/mo plan...
Well, good news is that the GPRS works flawlessly (havn't tried my imap mail yet but I can really care less if it works.)
The bad news being that ever since I modified those settings, the WiFi connection refuses to load anything through IE. Any ideas?
Edit:
Ok, so the gist of things is that everything is working as it should be. I figured I'd link to the resources needed to set up your internet with t-mobile using the 5.99/mo plan first. One step I don't think this lists is this though: Head on over you t-mobile.com and login to my-tmobile. Change your phone from your MDA to something like a RAZR etc etc. This will allow you to select the 5.99/mo internet package (t-zones). Then follow the steps in this thread to set up your MDA.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=315401
THEN to automaticly disable the proxy while using WiFi (a must if you plan on using both on a regular basis), download the current version of battery status ATTACHED to the first post of the thread here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=270751 Enjoy
Unfortunately, the wizard is a bit weird. I have a Dash, and I never had an issue, but, with the Wizard, or TMO MDA, you have to disable the proxy in order for the WIFI to connect to your home network, or any other network for that matter. I was frustrated too, until i found out that was the issue.
Hope it helps.
yep, solved the problem. Now is there any way around this? or do I just need to keep changing the proxy when I want to use GPRS?
If you have batterystatus installed go in to options and then the tools tab and it has a disable proxy over wifi tool. I'm not sure if it works though, I've never tried it out.
I DO have battery status...I'll have to check it out and give it a good test over the next 24hrs and I'll report back
update: just ran in my room and pulled my wiz of the charger. the battery status doesn't seem tl have an option under any of the tabs. I'll have to make sure I have an updated version come morning and I'll go from there
bumpity bump bump
I noticed that when I turn off the proxy server, it seems to forget all the information I put in...so when I want to use gprs again, I can't without imputing all the proxy information again. Is there a stand alone program that makes the wizard ignore the proxy when WiFi is active?
That's an easy one to fix. Just set up a second t-mobile modem connection and have the first one use the proxy and have the second one not use a proxy and just change the modem connetion under connections to whichever one you need to use. By the way, I tested the batterystatus no proxy when connected to wifi and it does work. If yours doesn't have that option under the tools tab then you just need to download a newer version. Here's the link to the BS thread that alweays has the newest build - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=270751.
Turns out that instead of clicking the link the original poster posted on the BS thread, I needed to DL the beta version that was attached! I now see the option you were talking about for disabling the proxy. Tx.

Thanks for the info. For the longest time I kept removing the proxy settings so the wifi would connect but then I would have to re-enter once I was going to use GPRS. This certainly saves time and headaches.

Hi guys. If you don't remember me - here's my story in a nutshell. I got a 8525 about a week ago. Since day one I tried and tried and tried but never managed to get the wifi working... (as you can imagine I am beyond desperate at this point)
Anyway last night I got thinking and decided to give it another stab. I hard reset, messed with the settings again...and this time manage to get a little further. My phone is now showing me as "connect to network", only problem is I get a message saying "Cannot connect with current connection settings. To change connection settings, tap Settings." each time I try to access anything internet related. I know I'm close especially since I'm actually connected now, I think it's just AT&T's rom doing everything it can to get me to use their networks (I'm on T-Mobile and don't have a dataplan anyway...).
Anyway can you guys think of what the problem might be? I'm so close I can taste it! Thanks.....
Bump... Anyone home?
where did you get your 8525? my wifi on my 8525 works perfectly fine, have u tried upgrading to WM6?
I have WM6 already. I got it off ebay. Everything is perfectly fine with it, it just doesn't want to use the wifi connection to get online.
Try a hard rest.
my 1st 8525 i got off ebay, and it worked great up until a few weeks ago, when the screen stopped functioning it just turned white, i called AT&T and they sent me a new 1 i just got it this morning and now, i cant make calls >.> it will ring then my phone will say i have no service when i have full service and the call will end. but my wifi is fine... did u use the WM6 upgrade that was released by AT&T
No thanks re: the hard reset. I've already done that... If I can't figure this out I'm going to sell my phone and steer clear of ppc phones. I like it, but I bought it for wifi and this is just getting ridiculous. I have tried everything. I've spent hours and hours on this. I've reset my router god knows how many times, played with security settings, reset my phone over and over to start over.....
The worst part now is that I know it's connected. The wifi aspect is fine. It's just the stupid phone not wanting to use the wifi connection for the internet.
Maybe someone with a 8525 and a Linksys router can post ALL of their wireless related settings for me.
Ekh
Yes I used the AT&T update.....
i use wifi and my linksys router, the 8525's range isnt that great u need to be within a few feet of the router to get good reception, im about 30 feet from mine and i get 2 Wifi signal bars and an ok speed. but try this
Start > Programs > Proxy Manager > Disable Proxy
then try to use your wifi, then go back and restore the proxy when your done, i think some 1 told me to do that because att uses that so u can use their internet service or sumthin
Thanks but I'm way ahead of you. I've already tried every piece of advice I've come across on xda. My last hope is someone elses detailed settings.
is your network passworded by a WEP or TKIP ?
It's WPA... My device has the password, and I added the MAC to my router table. It's connecting to the router/wifi...
...it's just that my device won't use the connection
* Sigh * Looks like another one of my please help me posts has gone dead...again...

Your problem may be one of the following:
1. The wifi connection is specified as connecting to "work" and programs are set to use an internet connection.
2. The wifi connection is specified as connecting to "internet" and programs are set to use a work connection.
Nope that's not it. But it does remind me of something so thanks. I deleted all the connections seeing as I don't have a dataplan... I made a new connection called "Wifi". BUT, it's not like I can specify any connection for it so it's just blank (no connection specified). By this I mean the options for a connection are:
bluetooth, cellular line, cellular line (GPRS, 3G), Generic IrDA, Hanes...COM1. No option for wireless...
Does that help?
Check that your router is set to allow connections by devices with 802.11b, which the Hermes uses. Most default to 802.11g only.
It's set for b and g
Helloooo...?
Hallelujah!!!!!
People, I have WIFI!!!
Thanks to everyone who tried to give a helping hand... It's really appreciated.
For future reference to those who are suffering from the same problem - this is what seemed to fix it... I entered google into IE via it's IP address rather than it's name (open command prompt, ping google.com...). To my surprise the page quickly loaded. I then instantly realized that the problem was with the DNS settings. I opened up "Wi-Fi" in settings, went to the "Network Adapters" tab at the bottom and entered in the DNS addresses for "IEEE 802.11b/g...". If you need help with this just PM me (I consider myself somewhat of an expert on this topic now).
I thought I was never going to get online. There IS a god!
