which rss reader do you use? - 8525, TyTN, MDA Vario II, JasJam General

I am currently using smaato news but haven't been that impressed with it. its pretty slow and often crashes on my hermes. I've also noticed that if I run it, close it then run again it crashes and my only option is a soft reset.
after recommended rss readers really guys
skinable would be nice but after decent functionality
thanks

WM5.o Compatible close button needed!

has anybody come across a one button close all application for WM5.0? Spb 3.0.1 is too slow on WM5 and Wisbar Advance 2.4.....is also too much for what is needed. Something like Magicbutton but written for WM5.0 would br nice, nothing that requires much memory, but something that enables the closing of running apps without having to go into start/settings/system/memory...etc.
Wouldn't it be nice if Microsoft had just written in that piece of code, as they are well aware that since PPC2000, that every application opened, remains so unless you manually close it down in memory (therefore hogging memory resources!)
Well if anyone knows of a WM specific solution, please do share.

I added couple files which they are usefull for you and they include the closeall app.
Install the cab files you'll see the close all, Reset and Running programs, which they can be clicked from the systray directly, after the installation they require a soft reset or else you go to Start>Programs>System open TrayLaunch and press Enable
GSPocketMagic++ is the most stable program I've tried. You need to put some amended bitmaps in to get it to integrate with WM5 but it works well...

Thanks guys. I'll try them both and let you know how I get on.
Damn!! My Jasjar is a Rocket!!

sub69: I don't know what kind of coding they used in that software you recommended, but it has boosted refresh rates and performance in general by at least 30%!! I know this sounds crazy but it's true! My opinion has completely changed about the speed of the Jasjar. It seriously Rocks! I couldn't care less if it doesn't stay this way, because it shows me conclusively, that future ROMs' will probably address the issues I have had thus far.
I needed this. Thanks a bunch sub69; best link I've had with regards to Universal software.
OK 1 gripe only: I've lost my two soft buttons on the bottom bar (any ideas?). It comes back and stays operational after a soft reset, but as soon as I use the 'close all' option of the program, I loose the soft keys! Damn..there's always a hitch!
Another positive though, the speed boost remains even after I have exited the program and revert to standard WM5.0 launcher!
P.S. I had at least 12 programs running simultaneously with no slow downs at all and 15 megs of Memory still available (tried to run out of memory, But couldn't). Very pleased at the moment, this is what I was expecting from the HTC Universal!! I'll test extensively before I comment further.
Thanks again sub69, u da Man!!
Mental...I didn't realise it was that good!?!
Not sure about the soft buttons, although come to think of it I have noticed they've disappeared a couple of times. Must've been when I hit "Close All" too?
Glad I could help, anyway. Do let us know how things go...

Still cannot believe it!! It's still going strong. Sussed the soft button thingy:Under start (GSPocket)/options/settings...uncheck the 2 tabs for'use exten task close' & 'Use Today skin'. That's it. It runs absolutely perfectly for me & with no need for amended bitmaps too! It fits right in wih my red or blue border themes (I only use my own jpegs now instead of themes - in the hope that I get no performance issues.....so far so good). Under menu settind tab I only select close all & setting (which gives me quick access to all settings in WM5.0..personal & system) and under 'click' tab I leave it as default 'Menu'. I'm so impressed with this software, I didn't think non-specific WM5 software coul be this good!
That site you recommended is also tops!
This software is so good that I must put up a new thread to inform all of your wonder find. I just hope all who try it get the same experience I'm getting. Thanks again sub69....I don't even feel the need for the next ROM update/grade...though I won't be turning it away.
Hmmm, not sure why you're that stunned. I'm finding it just fine - but certainly no faster than my JJ runs under PocketPlus 3.01, and the non-VGA graphics are a real step backwards. Anyone know how to solve this?
You mention a speed improvement; can you clarify: Before this, how long did it take to rotate the screen, and how long does it take now?
MagicButton (mbutton) works with batterymeter
Hi All,
I installed MagicButton (freeware) om my K-Jam. It works so far!
Cheers,

pocketpcfreewares.com is great! They do an RSSfeed showing all new and updated software, too, so its a permanent fixture as a "Live Bookmark" on my Firefox bookmarks toolbar.

That's the file you need to download for the Jasjar, then if you have an SD card reader, you can transfer it directly to it and install the .cab file by selecting it! If you don't have a card reader, let's hope you have a bluetooth dongle, as it's a small file then you can bluetooth it over. However if you have no problems with your activesync connection, just use that to dump the .cab file on your storage card somewhere or into 'My Documents' on the jasjar.
It's not complicated.

Yep, using it myself now - but no speed change over PocketPlus (even after hard reset to remove PP). Using it cos I like menu and PP didn;t offer all that much more that other apps don;t give me.

Porbably one of the best plugin for pocket PC !!

Hi all,
You absolutely need to have a look at this plugin... beautifull?
I am testing the evaluation version and it works great !!!

i've puschased it.very funcionally plugin for me
Tried it, didn't like it....
you cant beat Wisbar advance desktop, FANTASTIC!
I use it.
It is great, as it makes the icons very 'finger friendly', and you can quickly navigate to programs or system settings.
IMO, it really is the most practical plugin - not just looks good, but functional and easy to use
Now this is excately what I´ve been looking for!! Really great app! Finally an app that makes one hand navigation on the touch screen possible in a very good way! Really good, and I really really recomend it to everyone who has a pocket pc!
Great!!
great plugin.
i use it for severl months. works great.
i've tried wisbar advanced and i don't like it.

Hi Deedee.
Any chance you could post some links to some particular examples? I know if I looked for a while I could probably stumble across them, but I'm at work!
Thanks,
Mattster.
I have to agree that its a great piece of software, I have used the previous version and have just upgraded yesterday to the 2.1. I'm now able to uninstall the HTC home plugin and use this solely.
My biggest annoyance with it is that you cannot edit the website where you source the weather updates, however I have now installed SPB weather which enables me to specify my weather source.
Whenever I flash a new Rom I always make sure that this is one of the first programs added.

Interesting how this thread has been revived!
I'm often tempted to go for the HTC look, I like the large clock digits, but for functionality and ease of use I generally decide to stick with Spb.
Manindesert, what's your preferred ROM at the moment then?
Manindesert:
Just seen in your signature "FInixNOver WWE 6.1 Ver. 3.2 Light".... not tempted to go for the 3.4 light upgrade then? I'm nearly tempted to flash from Mary to FInix but am so happy with my device as it is at the moment! Plus I'd lose my Tomtom speed camera use (due to change in device code after flashing". What do you reckon?

Not sure about examples per se but here's links to the threads concerned, they are long but there are some nuggets in there:
Development sub-forum
General 2.1 Customisation
NiteStalkers Themes
There may be others but that's the ones i can find quickly.

I'm sitting at work shattered and dying because I spent last night trawling through the first 200 pages of 2.1 themes and development! The whole diamond theme thread for example was interesting, but the theme itself didn't appear till page 125 or something!
Lots of interesting stuff, but for every tweak or theme offered there seems to be a problem or issue that needs solving. I think I've decided I am too much of a "If it aint broken don't try and fix it" type of person for half of the threads. If anything went wrong with my phone, I would have to drop everything in my life until it was fixed!
All I'm debating now is whether to flash Fixinover's 3.4 lite rom as it apparently has a fix in it for the issue in Mary's Rom where the device code changes and passwords are lost after a soft reset. But I'm still resisting as there always seem to be extra reg edits and cabs to download after flashing a cooked ROM due to issues that people discover!

Touchscreen Interface for Pocket PC Phone

I just found this site with a very interesting app to convert your phone into somewhat iPhone/Palm like but not really, just wondering if anyone else has tried this to give it a hay or nay. So far I like it.
http://www.palminfocenter.com/news/8011/pointui-new-windows-mobile-touchscreen-interface/
very cool, thanks for this.
The direct link to the site is www.pointui.com
Very buggy. Bad scrolling imo. Is almost impossible to uninstall FYI.
Still to young to be replacing original interface. Wait till it develops more, and clears out bugs, and adds more custimizability. Then it will be a great UI.
Updated
They have updated the software and it is really nice but of course still needs some work. I keep thinking if it was the original software would I like it and so far my answer is yes. They have done a good job and will continue to impove it.

just tried 1.01b and i am mclovin it. it needs minor usability features added to it but overall very usable.
this is amazing.
how does it stand vs spb shell? are they the same type of app?
I tried this out, and although it looks nice, it's a real ***** to uninstall and everytime I was at the main screen, touching the phone icon would lock it up.
I tired this and it was real cool but would not update my calender and it would freeze up every now and then, will be nice when they get it stabalized
Been using it tons and have had no problems to speak of. Customizing the menus is a snap...just put shortcuts in the windows Start menu folder and ta-da! Skinning on the other hand is still being worked on.
What is with everyone having uninstall issues? Just delete the folder and the startup shortcut. Worked for me.
Has some nicer features. Still in it's infancy so not all the screens are ready (uses the standard ones for those for now). You can't beat free tho. Download it, try it out and get your suggestions in now.

good calculator programs? what do you use?

hey guys i couldn't find any posts about good calculator programs, i got To0's rom v2 and it didn't come with a
calc and i kinda need one that does basic operations. os= wm 6.1 thanks
I use gCalc. I cant remember where and how I got it but I can probly find it and post it, that if you want it.
1-Calc Lite is the greatest free calc in my opinion, great interface, and includes a tip calc and unit converter.
gCalc
To the best of my knowledge gCalc was written by one of the members here; greatbal. I use it every day. Works flawlessly and pleasing to the eye. It is also skinnable.

Anyone know a good Reverse Polish Notation Calculator? I love RPN, I still use my HP41cx from the 80's almost every day. I've tried the HP41cx emulator but I don't like the small buttons, the red border and it opens a little slow.
Thanks

[Info]E-reader

Just thought i would share my search for a good e-reader for my HD2.
I have not installed doc tabs or ereader from HTC so looking for 3rd party options.
Freda looks ok - but nothing special that stands out. just a good solid app.
Lexcycle - dont do one for WM.
Mobipocket seems interesting and snazzy with desktop integration and is the one i chose -it does sync, and guttenberg also has mobipocket files, and it can import pdf and html and text etc. it seems well featured with most features you would expect and want.
HOWEVER, just be warned that the cab from their website did not work on first install. I had to uninstall it, and then install to my device via the mobipocket desktop software before touch navigation and menus would work.
It seems adequately features and not as nice as stanza, but OK. If you have touchscreen woes though, install through the desktop app.
Other suggestions are of course welcome.
I think there is one called AIreader that everyone recommends...might want to look it up.
I haven't tried it personally...I like the HTC ereader, but I need to find the cab for it alone since my new rom doesn't have it on it...
I am in love with AlReader! Just perfect!
Im attaching the (freeware) English version. Hope that's okay (it's so hard to find on the web)
I'll give it a try tomorrow and update my post
p.s. I am reluctant to give htc's ereader a whirl as apparently it is quite buggy.
I also like this one...but it would be soooo cool if we got a fingerfriendly version for our HD2...anyone up to the task.
I admit I still have a longing for the tabbed interface and large book covers that you get from the HTC e-reader

The best Ebook reader on Windows Mobile is Allreader+. Unfortunately it isn't free but is worth the money, it can read all the important formats as far as I'm concerned and it has so many options that allow you to set it up exactly as you want.
Other options which are good are uBook and Mobireader.

Thanks for Freda by the way, it really is gorgeous. I think I will end up using it over AlReader when it loads a little faster and can open in fullscreen mode by default.

Can you check the build number on your start-up flash screen. If it is less than 804, it might be worthwhile for you to download a new version (use the dropbox link on my website) - because build 804 should be capable of starting up in fullscreen mode.

To be honest, adding support for extra formats is not one of my priorities for Freda development - because it would make the program bigger, slower and buggier, and in the long run I expect EPUB to become the format of choice.
That said ...
1) As Freda is open-source, someone else might feel differently, and might develop a version to read additional formats. I'm doing some refactoring at the moment, so that adapting Freda in this way will become fairly simple.
2) Calibre is a good (PC based) package that can convert various formats into EPUB; it might be a good solution for you.

Some minor naggles but I can live with those...
