Headphone Button - Windows Mobile Development and Hacking General

Does anyone know of an app (or know if it is possible to build one) that uses the little button on the microphone of the phone earbuds to skip tracks or perform other functions while listening to music (like on the iPhone earbuds)? Thanks for the info.

I want it too.

Hey, did I stump the geniuses or do I need to change the title to "Full iPhone iPod Interface for PPC"?

No offense but the geniouses might be busy answering more detailed questions...
For instance, how about some information on which program you are using to listen to music with. There's loads of them out there and they come with different plugins that MIGHT be able to be configured as you wish.
I don't know myself since I use a SE DH-970 (Bluetooth) with designated buttons for that sorta thing. Works with most of the common players, AudioManager, WMP, CorePlayer and Pocket Player to name a few.
To be honest, I love Slide2Unlock and I can see how the iPhone can be attractive to some, but if you want one so bad, why not get one instead of trying to turn your WM5/WM6 into an iPhone?

First, it doesn't really matter what media player I am using, it doesn't matter if I decide to program that button to play the Mexican Hat Dance over the loudspeaker. The question is, how can I program this button to work more closely with my software.
Second, I dont want to emulate the iPhone. Like many people who use their PPC as a music player, I dont want to have to reach into my pocket every time I want to change tracks. Pull the stick out of your rear and learn to take a joke.

Oooops, a bit touchy are we?
It DOES matter, like I said (and you said), you want it to work more close with your sodtware... WHAT software? WM5? WM6? WMP? And like I said as well, some programs let's you emulate buttons, some don't...
I can take a joke, no problem, although you are going about a little differently asking for help... All I tried to do was to let you know that I/we need more info to help you out, but if that's not good enough for you, fine.
I'll give you the short answer then.... No.

The first 10 things to do when you get the Universal!

Hello,
As i will be getting my Exec (hopefully) tomorrow, i thought this topic would not only help me greatly but also others.
What are the first ten things to do when you get your new exec?
e.g
1) Get a case
2) Install Software (name here) to use it as a TV remote
Thanks folks
Since this is going to be different from person to person, why not just check this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=31697
It covers most/all questions...
Here's what I did:
1). Get case - recommend Proporta Alu-Leather
2). Get screen protector - recommend Martin
3). Get GPS System - recommend BT-338
4). Get Car Mount - recommend Brodit/Proclip
5). Get SD Card - recommend 2-4GB
6). Get system tools software - recommend free software
7). Learn to tweak it - recommend XDA Devs - you guys rock!
8). Get desk charger
9). Get Bluetooth Headset - no recommendations
10). Kick yourself in the ass for spending so much on yourself and nobody else.
There you go. Hope that helps.

I think it's going to be for my husband: "Kick himself in the ass for spending so much on his lovely wife.."
For me, the top ten would be:
1) Get Screen Protector
2) Get Case (im using the soft leather case for the ordinary dictionary/translator... it's the same size, fits perfectly)
3) Get BT headset -- using jabra but i want the one with the lcd display
4) Pair BT with phone - Total Voice Commander
5) Install TCMPM and load your sd with movies
6) Personalize phone - change wallpaper.... Im using a hello kitty wallpaper-- got a right to be cheezy... Makes my dopod less intimidating.. Anyone who opens it says, "how cute..."
7) Load ringtones and Install PocketZenPhone
8) Sync phone with pc (i think this should be #3)
9) Install MSReader and load phone with ebooks
10) Show off discreetly to close friends... I dont want just anybody touching my phone with his grimy hands...
screen protector definitely.
A couple of mundane settings to change:
disable error reporting and
disable receive all incoming beams.
Get your activesync working to get your PIM data loaded.
Definitely consider a bluetooth headset (I use Sony Erickson HBH 662 and I'm happy with it).
Definitely helps to have some program to close programs instead of just minimize them (I use smallmenu).
Get your internet connection working.
Start tweaking, probably best to start with the appropriate section of the universal wiki.
Follow this forum and learn more and more.
Enjoy!!

Hi,
Would you tell me what is TCMPM, and how to get it. Thx
It is a media player. Go to http://tcpmp.corecodec.org/download to download.
Hope this helps

And it's utterly fantastic. a gazillion times better than WMP. Streaming movies over a wifi network without any silly pre-compression/reduction is fantastic.
Big Ups for TCPMP
And the most important thing for me on TCPMP is FULL screen!

On that point - why should we beg/borrow/steal/buy what we need to get a decentOS?
MS is getting lazy - THIS version of Windows Mobile should have come with WMP at least as comparable feature and performance wise as TCPMP. Also a decent task switcher and window closer, like GSPocketMagic, an RSS Reader like Egress, File Explorer like Resco, Pic viewer like Resco, Radio Streamer like Resco, decent Registry Editor, GPRS Monitor type program and so on...
I guess the good side of it is that other programmers are getting income from creating great apps.. apps which are better than MS' creation. It's healthy competition and in the end, we, the consumers, are enjoying the fruits of their labor
Merry Christmas!
Just a short follow up question.
The TCP media player seams to work great on AVI files created with the divx plug in, however, mpeg files play rather badly.
They hang every couple of seconds, jitters and jump.
However, they play nicely with win media player.
Are you others getting this?
Thanks,
Frode
When MS adds something and does something too well, they get sued for Anti-Trust, if they don't, they get complaint at, lose-lose.
MS have been known to put in some really basic software so 3rd party software developers can earn on the full version or better versions of the software.
so can't really blame them.
frodebass, try Pocket TV for playing MPEG. TCMP is really good for DivX, but why use MPEG when it's a space hog?
The first few things I would do are:
1. Don't charge the battery. Use it until its at 20% and then do a fully charge for 8 hours
2. Check for dead pixels on the screen
3. Take a few photos to make sure there are no dead pixels in the camera
4. Don't install a new ROM unless you need to. And if do want to make sure you hard reset before a ROM update
5. Don't install non-WM5 s/w at all. And if you want to install any third-party apps check here at the forum and always use the latest version. In general avoid apps that have Today screen plug-ins as they seem to the source of many problems from what I can gather
6. Show off your new "toy" to your friends/work colleagues!

Challenge for those who know what the heck they are doing

So, I appreciate this website alot, my htc wizard probably wouldn't be useable on a daily basis without the great software and suggestions that I have found here. However, there is one aspect of my wizard that I would love to see improved, and as I have no ability as a software developer I thought I'd throw out a challenge to all of you out there.
I would like to have a today plugin for TCPMP that has buttons for play/pause, next, and back. This would allow all of us who use this great player to control it from the comfort of our today screen.
I have searched high and low for this functionality for TCPMP, and have been unable to find it. If some enterprising soul out there wants to take on this challenge I am sure that I and many more out there would be supremely grateful.
Thanks!
No takers?
maybe ask the guy who made one for MortPlayer;
http://www.sto-helit.de/modules/edito/content.php?id=15
or use MortPlayer instead of TCPMP, maybe

A few small questions...

Hey all,
So far, this place has been a fountain of knowledge, which I'm truly grateful for, which makes learning my Herme's fun and easy going.
Since joining here, I've managed to switch my Keyboard from German to English, with thanks for the Advanced Config Tool, get Xvid's working under TCMP something or other, get Pocket MSN running, and a few other things...
But here are a few things which have been grinding my gears (sorry, just watched Family Guy);
A.) How do I change the message received tone and the alarm tones?
B.) How can I switch off the auto suggestions for text messages etc, even though it seems to be off in tools
C.) Is Linux on the Hermes any good / Is it still being developed and supported / would it be worth it me switching to Linux?
D.) Where do you all get your spares from? Preferably excluding Ebay.
E.) If theres anyway to have WMP / the HTC Music player continue playback from last play / track / session? (I.e. If i get off a bus, and have to turn off a track, instead of having to reselect the album i was listening to, for it just to auto-recognise the track being "paused".)
The reasoning behind D, is because although my Hermes is secondhand, not to mention purchased from Ebay, the seller kindly sold me a headphone adaptor, the screen slightly marked, and the camera cover is scratched to hell, not to mention the keyboard seems to be slightly raised in the middle, meaning a segment of keys have been worn down, along with a scuff above the keyboard.
So since I want to try and get it looking fairly decent, I'd like to know where you get your stuff from, and if anyone can recommend me a decent adaptor for headphones when listening to music.
I'm sure I'll have more questions, but for now these will do.
Thanks in advance guys, and keep up the good work!
Regarding question D - here are a few suggestions:

Thanks Mike!
Just a shame about my other questions. lol
Hopefully someone will suggest some stuff.

Regarding A,B and C, I'm pretty sure there are existing threads on these. Don't worry overly if the threads are not Hermes specific. As for E I'm not sure that it's possible, but I could well be wrong, especially if you are using a proprietry player.
Mike
PS. Generally rolling up several questions in one post ends up not being very successful (even if at first it seems efficient and space saving. You may need to separate them out.)
Cheers
lol, thanks for the help there Mike.
To be completely honest, i had been searching before doing this post. Most of my little queries had been resolved that way.
Ah well, i'm just going to continue looking.
Thanks once again Mike!
Two more things...
How would I be able to re-install MS Office onto my hermes, since its not currently installed?
Also, are there any games available for it?
Another one...
Hopefully for any music buffs, this will be easy enough.
I currently have a large amount of music in various bitrates, however my main collections are in 320kbps.
Obviously, transfering this data from PC to phone is ok, but takes up loads of unneccessary space.
Does anyone use anything to convert their tunes to a lower bitrate (128kbps approx) while keeping the music in MP3 format so it can be used with Audio Manager, keeping all the original mp3 info (Artist, Track Title, Album etc), or should I cut my losses and move back to crappy itunes using m4a within WMP?
Do a search for the ms office cab file. Just click on it and it will install or look for the single cabs for each thing, depending if you need all the components.
I use SUPER (freeware) to change my bitrate on my MP3's, I don't know if it will take away any of the info but its worth a try as the install file is about 32 Kbs. If it doesn't work then you've lost 10 mins.
Cheers...
I use dBpoweramp music converter, it's also free and easy to use.
Cool, thanks for the advice guys! Just had loads of music as m4a, but then WMP doesn't recognise the names, and you have to constantly open the albums you want, rather than simply selecting the artist within album manager.
Will try those out tonight!

Sweet App Idea

Now I haven't done a ton of development, only real basic stuff only to tinker and learn, but I had an idea for what I would imagine would be a pretty sweet app for WM Phones.
An XBox Interface Application, that would offer a bunch of features for people with XBox Live. What I was thinking was:
Ability to see XBL buddy list
Ability to read and respond to mail
Ability to use the keyboard on the phone to communicate with people on XBL (like the little MS keyboard for XBL)
Ability to use the phone as a "headset", to talk to people on XBL out loud
Access the XBL Marketplace, to purchase items to be downloaded to your XBox the next time it connects (as you can do over the internet now)
I was thinking that it would interface to the XBox using Bluetooth, as I believe that is what their controllers use to talk right now. I think MS could throw their weight behind it and develop this App as it could probably convince some people to look at WM phones over competitors. I don't care about iFart apps, I just want good usable apps that people will want!
And sorry if this is the wrong section to post. It seemed correct to me, but if it isn't please move and I won't be a repeat offender!
Jason
Some of those can be achieved (viewing achievements, buddies), but i dont think that you could use your device as a keyboard without modifying the software on the xbox too (doing that probably gets you banned from XBL). Voice chat would be impractical as you would have to hold the phone whilst playing, which is why a headset is a better idea.
Maybe you can look for it in windows 7, but for the time being, i would suggest just bookmarking the MS website where i beleive you can log in and do everything except use the device as a keyboard or voice chat.
i Like the heaset idea, but it would be better if your not there and can join a party and talk to them while your not at your console.
Another awesome idea:
Make my phone cook for me
Too bad both my idea and your idea can't happen.
I dunno, I think Microsoft could make it work if they decide to put it to the effort. And what I meant by the voice chat is having the phone wirelessly connected to the XBox, then using a headset attached to the phone to voicechat on (since I have all of these old handfree kits floating around that I rarely use, they fall out too easily when I'm walking my dogs, but while sitting there playing rockband I could get one of those to stay in).

HTC Music Player

Hi Folks,
I hope I am not being lazy here, but I have looked around for a few days through many of the related forums to the HTC HD2 and Windows Mobile forums.
What I am interested in would be adding functions to the music player on the HD2.
I listen to a lot of audio books and have tried some of the (rather useless) audio book add-ons or stand alone apps for the phone. One or two of them just showed a list of books that would not or could not open; others just would not open at all or could not load on the phone.
Thinking laterally, as I do, the issue is I don't want a new app or an add-on to the tabs already available, just a change / addition to what is there already.
The Music Tab, great place to start. Why can't we have a little button the rewinds the book, or any other audio file, back 30 seconds every time you tap it. And why does the player not hold on to “where you stopped listening" and start from that point when you start play again later. A media book mark if you like.
So here is my request;
1. Can these be added to the music player? I do not have the skills to even work out if it is possible.
2. Could one of the many well accomplished coders who frequent the site manage to take this one. would it be a allot of work? Can it be added as a cab install?
I wish I knew the answers to at least one of these questions. You guys seem to be able to tweak and mod everything else on the phone. Or do I just need to learn coding, hacking or making .aa files from mp3s.
Hope someone can answer this, I for one think it would be a great addition to an already great phone.
Thanks guys (non-gender salutation)
Billy
