Hi everybody.
What tools can be used to sniff the wirless packages send between a mobile and X
I would like to sniff what/if my mobile phone is sending and receiving,
any wireless packages ( WLAN, or GSM/EDGE/UMTS/...)
What tools are available?
go search in networking forum
no reason for such a comment.
WTF! I tell you where you will find answers. You should thank me instead.
You can try PeekPocket, Hitchicker, or WiFiFoFum
The 3 are freewares and can be found at http://www.pocketpcfreewares.com

that why he told you non of them are packet sniffers
now here 3 sec on google http://airscanner.com/downloads/sniffer/sniffer.html
your welcome
found this while searching for something else. http://www.cam.com/vxsniffer.html
thanks.
I can use these for sniffing NDIS
WLAN IR ...
like for example does wireshark.
but not GSM or GPRS packets,
which is more interesting in the mobile context,
is there anyway to sniff GSM, GPRS packets?
yes - but the equipment is SUPER expensive (6-digit US$) and is available to law enforcement buyers

In case anyone runs their own Asterisk PBX, the X-pro phone works well on the Universal. It states that it's only WM2003, but it seems to work fine. Call quality is pretty good considering it seems to only go through the speakerphone (at least I haven't found the setting to make it work phone-style).
Hi Nick
Which soft client are you using on the xda? Do you have a decent soft client that has g7323 or g729 support or are you using IAX or g711. I am developing some embedded Astrisk PBX's at the moment, at some point we wnat to add support for PDA's on our WiFI hotspot network but really dont want to waste all the bw needed by g711.
Most of the big name cleints have not yet develpoded a g723 or g729 client for any PPC. Some of our wifi deployments use satellite bw and at $6,ooo per month per MB g711 adds about 2c per minute to the costs.

I'm using the one from xten http://www.xten.net/index.php?menu=PPC. Check the url for all the specs as I'm not fully aware of all the different protocols and their required bandwidth, but I think this one supports 711 and GSM. I can see that it would be important of such an expensive connection, but for most (myself included) I just find a hotspot, turn on wifi on the Jasjar, and away I go (this is when I'm travelling or calling long distance

IIRC, the xten (now CounterPath) PPC Softphone client supports G729 (I think it's a) only if ordered in quantities of 10,000 or more. Hah, I guess that's out for us lamers who just want to buy it to use SIP on our mobile devices.
The g729, however is available on eyebeam (called that because of the video capabilities available in the premium version 1.1) for Windows. If it makes you feel any better, they neglected to include the Mac users, as well, and so they don't have g729 support either.
I love g729 because I use it with Teliax and IConnectHere over dialup with excellent results. I am currently consulting in the Middle East and it saves me 70% or more on telephone charges.
using x-pro and asterisk
From what I understand it is possible to run X-pro on a Qtec9000 . I have some questions:
-what are the exact release of the software used (windows and x-pro)
-what are the settings used to make it work with asterisk and is it via stun server or with NAT traversal.
- is there a working iax client out there. The advantage is that it just needs one port to be open and that it is very easy to do nat traversal
Could you please paste the info and the settings to the forum. If I'm sure I can make the Qtec9000 work as a voip phone I will buy me one in short time.
I've given ppciax (http://www.voipalia.com/ppciax/index.php) a brief run on my XDA Exec, with reasonable sucess - not really used it, by the time I find an open hotspot, connect to it, and whatnot, it's usually a lot easier to just use my contract included minutes
Next time I ggo abroad I'll certainly be using it though.
Might give the xten clent a go as well, just to see which is easier (though I suspect using IAX the ppciax client will remain my voip softphone of choice, just for ease of compatabilty with random networks).

-Release 2.2 1106t build stamp 18462. It appears that once closed you will need to soft-reset to re-open. Works via NAT with or without stun.
HI Guys
I saw the x-ten 10,000 plus for g729 as well. Shame. But i am still looking and will let you know if i find one. I know that G723 and g729 work really well on 3g connection as i have a soft client on my lap top that works perfectly using a bluetooth connection to my Universal. When i make international calls ina coffe shop or something it is much cheaper, as the BW is less expensive than calling over the gsm connection. Just a shame you can only run g723 over the laptop and not over the universal directly.

Charlie
If you want to use an IAX capable Softphone on your Pocket PC to connect to Asterisk or any VoIP Provider supporting IAX give "VoIPSurfer" a try...

Ok, have read in this forum somewhere that if you specify the DNS and IP settings that you use for GPRS/UMTS then you don't get the IE hanging for a few seconds whilst it automatically looks them up each time. Can get quite annoying when doing a heavy browsing session.
I use my phone on the 3-UK network and they are of no help with these settings as the phone is not available on their network yet (will be soon, its on the 3 Sprint system thats used for upgrades and new connections).
So the questions is, is there a program out there that will capture the DNS and IP that i'm connected to whilst using my 3UK net connection??
Cheers

i cannot remember for the life of me where i read the solution to your problem.
apologies I cant be of any help, and apologies for taking back the ashes!!!!! (Moderator intervention (Mike) - You're not sorry at all!!) - poor UK

Have you tried VXUtil.EXE from Cambridge Computer Corporation (Freeware)
From memory (not always reliable!) it may provide info you need: - (and if not still very good for checking your connection status)
http://www.cambridgevx.com
Mike
You can also try the Task Manager by dotfred to get ipconfig and ipconfig/all info which will give you the IP and DNS settings .. can be found on buzzdev.net ..
vxUtil done the trick.
Thanks for the quick response.
S.K.
I would like to hear what everyone is using for the following
VPN - I am trying the BlueFire Client, and it seems okay
SSH - The Cambridge Util is the only one I am aware of right now
IP Utils - I am using Cambridges VxUtil. It seems okay, I have used it in the past
Firewall - ??
Terminal Svcs - Is thier a better client than the OEM ver? It seems a bit limited..
Any other Networking utils that you would recomend??
Thanks a lot..
and what about OpenVPN for PPC - looks good

Hello
VPN : i use openvpn pocketpc on my WM VI ... but that's not a really good solution because CommManager is not aware of this connection --> applications that connect through CommManager don't use VPN :/
SSH : http://www.pocketputty.net/
IPUtils : like you, but im looking for a route editor
Good luck
Not aware of one.

Do you think a Firewall app would be worth $10 bucks? I've thought of building one, since there's really no protection from WiFi or BT attacks. The GPRS/EDGE/3G should be firewalled at the carrier.
Whew I have been really busy at work and I just got back to checking this thread.. Thanks for the tips on SSH and VPN.
I got the Bluefire VPN working after a little bit of hassle. The client does not support Split Tunnel and i get a lot of frame errors on my VPN concentrator when connected but it does seem to work.
I'll have to check out the OpenVPN and the SSH clients you guys posted.
As far as firewall goes. I think it is just a matter of time before we start seeing attacks aginst devices.
A firewall would be nice but it may cause some headaches with other apps.. Also even though the carrier data nets are firewalled where they connect to the Public Internet that might not protect you from connections from other devices on the carrier network.
SSH: http://www.choung.net/mToken/

Hi,
I'm currently on a HTC Trinity using Mary's 3.3.5 ROM and want to be able to connect to my universities WiFi network but to do so I need to use a VPN tunnel, anyone recommend a good PPC App that will allow me to connect to my universities VPN?
Cheers,
Mike

WM6 Pro includes both a PPTP & a L2TP/IPSec VPN client. This will work with most VPN routers & firewalls, however they may not be configured to support it. If you can connect using Windows 2000/XP's built-in PPTP or L2TP/IPSec VPN Client then you can almost certainly connect with WM6's.
A lot if VPN Routers & Firewalls are supplied with a 'free' Windows client that has the documentation geared around it. However most (if not all?) of these products will work with the native VPN client in Windows 2000+ (and WM5/6). I would try and stick with the L2TP/IPSec client but this requires some additional steps over setting up PPTP - on both the client & server (router). It is worth the extra steps in my opinion though.

I have the same problem ... I am not able to connect using the default VPN client ...
Hi,
There's a great review of vpn clients by Menneisyys in the Wiki. It's entitled:
'Access Your Desktop PC From Your Pocket PC!'
I'm sure you'll find it very useful because it would point you in the right direction as regards VPN tunnelling to your Uni's server.

HI!
Thank you for your reply, but this articles are about "Remote desktop" - like solutions for WM - based devises. Not for connecting to VPN.
Did anybody have had any success so far?
Any working 3-rd party VPN clients / Solutions?
Thank you in advance.
Dmitry.

Hi,
You might find Manneisyys' review very long but if you take your time to read it, you'll see that he talks about the various VPN clients and how they compare. VNC, VNC+, etc are all mentioned there.
Just take your time to read it.

Nice article, is the VPN working?
Do you have the WM6 VPN client working? Specifically the ActiveSync -> VPN -> MS Exchange functionality that was there under WM5?

But. Once again: the article talks about REMOTE CONTROL with the use of things like: RAdmin, MS RDP, etc.
This sofware - are remote desktops, so called VNC, not VPN clients in a classic way.
There is a little mess we get at the moment. (I've defenetelly got)
Let me describe in detail:
People need VPN here for many reasons, for me it is:
- to connect to some VPN through WIFI with our WM5 \ 6 device.
In my case- this is a public WIFI internet provider, which has a wifi coverage in the city.
Wifi is open PPTP. I need to type in a login \ pass on the web page I get, to start using the internet in current wifi session.
The ALTERNATIVE way to conect to internet - is to establish a VPN connection over the wifi.
I can successfully do in on the laptop.
With my UNI, WM5, AKU 3.5 - I can connect to VPN with the built-in VPN Client, but the first request to internet (via browser or Messaging send-receive) - drops my VPN connection, as it described here in the forum.
So: we need some software that can work.
I tried so far:
1. BlueFire VPN - just can't connect.
2. Antha VPN - just doesn't work.
I have heard thah on some other ROMs there is no problem with the built-in VPN client for PPTP, will try with some other WM6 ROMs later.
Any solution so far?
Thank you, kiwi992
Thanks to everybody!

Hi! The L2TP/IPSec is a special story.
It is widely discussed here at forum: xda-developers > General discussion > Networking >
Search for *VPN* string on this forum.
This is the: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=302520&page=2&highlight=*VPN* one of the success stories.
You need to obtain the certificate from the system administrators of your network. You may also have some "magic" URL in your campus network, where you can download the required certificate. This URL should point to the inranet web page of the web interface of the VPN server.
If your goal is to securely connect to some specific computer on the network, you should use one of the VNC programs: the VNC server part on the computer, and the VNC client on your device.
In any case - first check your certificate \ settings on, say, Windows XP laptop, connected through WIFI, first, then continue with the device.
Good luck!
Dmitry
VPN problems
I don't know if this issue is specific to my device (pharos gps 600 gps phone), or to windows mobile 6 which I'm running.
I can't connect to my vpn through wifi, the reason being is that I cannot associate any connections through the wifi card with the vpn info.
Wifi card doesn't show as a selectable modem in the modem tab next to the vpn tab in the vpn config. Only modems are cellular line modems, bluetooth, and one "hayes compatible com1" which is my usb I would guess.
Does anybody know how I might get around this?
I am trying to configure network rules on a Tytn Kaiser.
I would like any application trying to access the internet try the wireless connection first, and if not available, use mobile sevices (e.g. 3G) instead.
I'm guessing this must be easy, but I can't find any information regarding it.
Cheers.
