Hi commumity,
was using my Ameo today in my car. BT and phone activated, screen maximum brightness.
I have a 12V / 230V converter installed providing 160W continously. While using phone and contacts throughout the day, battery power dropped more and mmre though my device was connected to power supply. In the afternoon it ran out of power starting with loosing the connection to vodafone.
Who has similar experiences, who has a better way of charging in car?
best regards
dieter
My old car charger which works fine with all my old WM devices does not supply enough power for my Ameo.
My Brodit powered holder does.

I second that. This has been discussed numerous times - you need to check the ampage of your charger. If it's niot supplying enough, turn the screen brightness right down.
Well i guess its time for a little electrical networks lesson.
this phone consumes, under typical use about 300mAh, so if you have the screen on bright and the phone on with bluetooth your going to be using more than that and don't forget you still need to charge the battery and to top it all off your device will start to get hot and nothing kills a battery more than heat.
Solution: you need to make sure that you get a car charger that has an output of at least 1A... remember it will work with less but it won't charge as fast. usually but not always, you can find this information somewhere on the charger.
hope this helped
Output of 1A is one thing, but it seems that HTC devices (the Athena for one) more ways for charging. The orignal car charger from HTC does power the device fast(I have the charger for a few days now and can confirm that). There is also adapter cable available that allows fast charging. See the following post and post. It looks like the original HTC connectors use different pins on the connector for fast/powerfull charging

Yes, you're right. The original car charger does charge very well my Dopod with the screen turns to maximum, phone, bluetooth and GPS all are turned on.
Would anyone please care to post a direct link to a fast 1A car charger in the UK? I tried looking at the HTC ones at expansys but wasn't sure which were official and which weren't. Thanks
Yeah, a link for a good charger in The Netherland would be apriciated as well!
Thank in advance.

The Brodit mount has car charging built in and is also extremely sturdy. Available from Brodit dealers

I have seen the ameo using over 1.2A
Device turning to hot to handle...
But then again mineis back with T-mobile for repairs...
Wich sucks bigtime
had the device 1 week
T-mobile has it 3 weeks
Told me it would take 2-3 weeks, now they say they don't know when it will be ready

When I plug my MDA Pro into my PC it draws 460mA of current at 4.75V and the orange charging light always comes on.
I have bought a car charger - when the MDA Pro is plugged into that it also draws 460mA at 5.04V but the Pro doesn't always seem to realise it is being charged - the orange charging light doesn't come on and the backlight switches off so I cant see the SatNav! (when the light goes off the current goes down to 430mA)
The charger was bought of eBay from shop4hardware/PCglobe for £9.99 and it looks well made.
Any ideas what is going wrong? Has anyone got a 12V charger they are happy with - if so where did it come from and how much??
ceemjay the tight fisted
I bought a car charger off eBay, and while the orange light does come on and stay on, it doesn't seem to charge very effectively. If i'm using something like TomTom the charger manages to keep the battery charge level just about constant, rather than building up charge.
Is this a problem with the Universal? I had a Blue Angel before the Universal, and the car charger I had for that was very effective.
Cheers
Rowan
I had this problem too and solved it by purchasing an "orange" (UK mobile phone operator) branded charger for 10 quid from one of their shops. I have no issues now.
What i did notice when I had the problem was by ensuring the xda was off prior to plugging in the old charger, it would continue to stay orange when turned on. I think this problem is a common one with the usb cable & car charger adaptors combo.
i bought one from expansys, what i noticed:
1. It takes a lot of jiggling, pushing, pulling and twisting to get it recognised by the device (organge light on)
2. When it charges, it does so slowly, i think about 1% per 10 minutes or so, or about 10% per hour.
My two bobs worth anyway.
Many of the mini USB car chargers are simply not powerful enough to charge these devices. They all have the same voltage but the amps are different. I read somewhere that good M5000 car chargers should be rated at 1amp, I'm not sure about this but I've certainly had trouble with ones at around 600mah.
With the under powered chargers you often have to plug them in while the device is switched off. Even then it's not going to charge as well or as quickly. Getting them to start charging without turning you device off is just down to luck and patience.
My advice is to look for chargers that are specific for the M5000 etc. If it also mentions Motorola phones etc, then it's not going to have the required power output.
I hope this helps...
I bought an ORA one from a service station (phone bitz type shop), it was a bit expensive but I needed one in a hurry and you can test them in the store.
as per my earlier post - m5000 is orange branded htc universal, aka o2 xda exec. I believe mine stated it was for the spv500 and it still worked fine...
The universal wants a 2 amp charger really. the 0.5 amp from most chargers including USB ports just is not enough to do much more than stop your battery draining whilst your universal is in use !! other useful alternatives include the charger meant for the newish blackberry
Thanks for all the comments.
The charger that comes with the Pro is rated at 1A however I believe the USB spec only allows up to 500mA to be drawn (as I orginally posted it draws just below that) and I have never had a problem with charging via USB. Hence my confusion!
Is the charging software controlled and might there may be a bug which manifests itself under circumstances?
Clive
The Brodit active holder charges the universal first time everytime, and is a very good place to store the phone on the move. I've got a 3.5mm input on my car stereo and use my phone as my in car music source. If I could get a 3.5mm 4 pole to 3.5mm stereo plug and breakout mic it would be perfect since I could use it as decent handsfree solution, voice command can still use the built in mic when the stereo connection is inserted but the phone app doesn't.
The Brodit holders are nice. I prefer the unpowered version, so I use a separate charger cable. But I agree good holders.
OK, I tried searching the forum for a similar post and didn't find anything but wanted to share a bit of heart-burn resolution after my Wizard ran completely down on power and would not charge back up. It would seem that once the Wiz is completely dead, you must use the AC Charger that came with the phone. I have had 3-4 RAZR's in the past and their charger works great when the Wiz still has power but they will not charge the phone when it is dead.
The only difference I see in the two chargers is that the HTC charger supplys 5.0V 1A of power unlike the Motorola charger only supplys 5.0V 550mA.
Hope this helps others.
Not only that, but if you leave your Wizard (my 8125) charging overnight with a normal Motorola power supply, it could also run down your battery to zero. The wizard charger supplies normal cell phones, so you either need to use the one that came with your device or make sure when you buy an additional one that it will supply the same level of power.
I thought I had a defective battery for a few days when I first got the device because I was using my Pebl charger and the same thing happened to me...
Thank you for this post....I thought I had finally loaded something on my phone that I couldn't recover from...lol.

i hope you all are wrong.
my mda vario is totally dead. i tried a friend's battery and it powered up like normal. so i assumed a dead (not only empty) battery and ordered one from ebay (still waiting though).
unfortunately i have so many different chargers for usb that i don't know what the original one looks like. maybe someone could post a picture or tell me the exact type.
thanks. regards ize|man
ps. @mbn: your power goes down to zero with a different charger ATTACHED??? even if that provides lower ampere - how can it drain power from the device?
pps. i even tried my universal car charger (12V -> usb). afaik it provides 1A as well. but i can be wrong.
Just make sure the 12>usb supplies a 5v voltage, nothing more or else you would be one unhappy person.

Yes, i was using the iGO tip that I bought for a Motorola phone (A32, I believe), I left my 8125 plugged in (powered down) with that tip overnight in a hotel room and the next morning I woke up and it was completely drained to zero. However, a few other times it did not drain to zero. I thought I had a flaky battery so I ordered a replacement from eBay and the next week the same thing happened. I finally got smart and now I have the right tip (A53) and it works fine. The male part of the two iGO tips look exactly the same (A32 & A53) so I thought it would be the same power supply. Wrong!
What's stranger is that if your pda is on and you plug in a Motorola phone power supply and the battery is not close to zero, it DOES charge the battery. I think the key is not leaving it plugged in when it's powered down for many hours at a time. A full day out of the office without email has taught me 2 valuable lessons: always bring the right power supply and always carry a spare battery.

sure
of course it supplies 5v as it's meant to be.
but that leaves me with my open question: what is printed on the original power supply so i can identify it? thx.

I was told that the ic chip inside the MDA and Razr charger is different so using the razr charger might not be a good idea. As for the OEM charger, mind was made by Delta Electronics Inc. HTC P/N:79H00051-01M
i have the same problem now. the battery is completely drained, and i can't charge my phone now. i lost my original chaarger, and i've been using a USB cable to charge.
Same thing happened to me... while traveling no less!!! In my case, it was a Boxwave retractable charger: battery at zero, USB didn;t work...freaked me out.
Wenlez, you can either got to a Tmobile or Cingular store and get the RIGHT replacement charger, or get the correct iGO tip. You should be OK.
Since I upgraded my Trinity using the official HTC rom update I have found that my device will not charge when it's in the brodit active holder in my car. The orange light comes on as if it is charging but when i check the power status i note the power drop over a period of time.
The device will charge without any problem when it is connected to my PC via the usb cable, it also charges without any problem when i use the mains power adaptor.
Initially I thought perhaps my brodit was faulty so i bought a new one, still i have the same problem.
Any suggestions from anyone?
Thanks,
Robert
I recognized very slow charging with my device over USB in comparison to my older PDAs. The reason must be something with the available current over USB (max. 500 mA). Maybe this is also the reason for your problem with the Brodit holder.
Try a separate car charger. They are available quite cheap with a standard USB plug.

Hmm, this is a question that needs answering. On my Prophet I could plug it into my car 12v cig with an 850mah usb adapter and it would power the device for navigation and also charge it at the same time. Now with my Trinity, it seems to have a hard time keeping up, so I bought a new high powered adapter (2,000mah). It still doesn't seem to be charging very fast although it seems to be able to keep up with the device power usage. Is there a charging problem with the Trinity with some roms?
After trying multiple car chargers, most of which wouldn't even power the charge light on my Trin let alone charge the battery I opted to spend a few quid and bought the Carcomm CMPC-96. It works a treat and charges the battery very quickly even when i'm running tomtom and making and taking calls at the same time. I can't figure out why my brodit holders wouldn't produce enough power to charge the battery but this Carcomm product is the Dogs !
Via mains and car charger?
My Vario II doesn't seem to be charging in the car, even though the charging icon appears.
Thanks.

Are you using an approved charger. Many phones using the same mini USB connection actually use half the current of the Hermes when charging. So it is conceivable you are delivering charge but at a low mA and consequently looooong charge time. Indeed if the circuit in the Hermes is more sofisticated it may in fact be delivering 0mA to the battery.
There is also a known issue when using car chargers that if the connection is interupted in anyway when connected then it will only charge when the Hermes is off. This can only be re-set by doing a soft reset, after which it will charge when on or off.
Mike
Also be aware of cheap mini-usb chargers.. A while back there were some people that fried their wizards with cheap car chargers bought off ebay.
I use a belkin mini-usb charger that i purchased for my magician way back in the day and its been working for my wizard and hermes.. but it didn't charge my sda.
Also i think batti will give you stats on what your looking for.
I AM using the charger that I used to use on my SPV C500, but I could sworn it used to charge my Vario II fine. Now, however, it seems to drain the battery if anything.
What's a good car charger for the Hermes then? The official HTC Tytn is £18 inc postage at Expansys. Any cheaper?
Cheers.
P.S. Installed Batti, and while charging from mains it says 4.197V. I thought power output was done in Amps?

Yes voltage without power rating is a bit useless, you're right you need the amp reading.
I cannot advise about car chargers as I use a 12v to mains inverter so I always use mains chargers for my laptop and phones / PDAs it's a lot simpler and I have it permanently wired in with a mains socket in the car.
Mike
P.S. I note that both my SPV C500 (Typhoon) and Vario II (Hermes) were supplied with mains chargers from HTC that put out 5V/1A.
Does this not suggest that both phones have the same charging requirements?
Thanks.
try battery status
there is a link in the hermes wiki for battery status.
i find this a useful tool.
it will show power drain and charge in miliamps.
always fun to see the power drain spike up to over 1000 mA
Thanks CrunchyGremlin.
I have installed BatteryStatus as mention here http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Must_have_tools
It shows the mA drain (or + when charging).
Cheers. I'll run this next time I plug my car charger in.

For everyone without soldering skills - there are plenty of portable external chargers for sale, even one from HTC:
HTC Battery Bank BB G300
i've bought a couple of portable chargers. Neither of them worked. In bothe cases i plugged them in and my diamond showed itself as being connected to a power source on the task bar. The light ring pulsed in the charge pattern also. However after a few minutes of "charging" once removed the battery level is lower than when i plugged it in. This is the case whether i had the diamond on or off when charging. Chargers work fine using different adaptors on other none wm phones. The thought i had was that the chargers were outputting enough to power the charging circuit but not enough to charge. This in turn is draining the battery. any thoughts ppl??

Portable chargers and HTC don't go together. You MUST switch your phone off to charge it otherwise the PMS will get confused and keep changing power sources like External > Internal > External > Internal and so on. Just like a light switch when you turn it on it takes more power than just leaving it on for 10 minutes. Portable chargers have a charge rate of ~250 mA which is 1/4 of a Official HTC Charger.
Conclusion: If you want to use a portable charger ONLY use it after turning your phone off otherwise its USeLESS

Basically what i thought then. I must be getting particularly rubbish ones because they dont even work when the phone is off. I gave up on them a few months ago and just bought a spare battery and charger. Quite cheap off ebay and a battery is a smaller item to carry than a portable charger.

Shouldn't be too hard to build. Take one of these (high efficiency!), solder the 9V battery adapter and the mini-usb cable to it and your're done. Only thing I worry about is the capacity. You get NiMH 9V cells at approx 250 mAh. Given the battery voltage is 9V, you get a total energy of 8.1 kJ stored in it, which translates to 450 mAh at 5V (input voltage of device). Given that this back-of-the-envelope calculation does not take conversion losses in account, you can be happy if you get 20-30% charge out of it. Maybe you could wire several 9V batteries in parallel so you get more charge out of it. Which I am gonna try out right away .

No. MythBusters tried it out. Turning on an incandescent light bulb (60W I think?) uses about the same power as leaving it on for 17 seconds. Fluorescent light bulbs didn't use significantly more power to turn on.

Ok...
The only problem is that my Diamond seems to use more power than what is provided by the car charger... So the car charger limits the discharge, but that's all.
On my old prophet, I could have used GPS for days (using a bluetooth external GPS of course).
It's a pity the diamond is not as power efficient.

I agree with you. A fellow XDA member posted somewhere here that he started of with 100% for a 6 Hour journey using his diamond and when he got to his destination he said it was around 30% left!
It's not too hard to build one, as soon as I remember, it's adapter (for the battery), 5V regulator and a female USB (it's easier to find, you use your sync cable and you can charge other things, MP3 players, portable speakers etc.).
Am I right, or you have different design.
Also, you can use 4 1.5V batteries, I've got few 1900mAh of them, so they should last longer. Also, I think the regular 9V battery is bigger than 250mAh.
