Possible to improve scrolling through Contacts? - Windows Mobile Development and Hacking General

I'm curious whether some of the more knowledgeable participants could have a look at my original thread in the Trinity forum and comment on whether a fix via a registry tweak is possible or it belongs in the "too hard" basket.
I've created a thread in this forum as I feel that my original thread is not receiving the proper exposure & some of the replies seem to detract from the topic at hand.
Cheers.

you can also use your keyboard and select the arrow up / down key for a few seconds to trigger the alphabet search (big letters). I realize this isn't exactly what your looking for, but probably much easier then using the scroll wheel.
You also might what to see if you can find a way to tie a hard key to the function up / down of the scroll wheel to trigger this function.

And that's basically the aim of this thread - to throw a few ideas around in the hope that someone might see it as a challenge & be able to come up with a workable fix.
As I don't have any programming skills, I don't know how difficult or easy it is to change the default behavior of the scroll wheel when opening Contacts. Hence, input from the more knowledgeable users with programming skills will hopefully clarify the difficulty of incorporating such a change.

stylus-free use?

Hi, I am quite happy with my Cingulare 8125, but I sometimes find myself in situations where I would rather not use the stylus, and then I wish there was a way to put the start menu and the OK button on one of the device's buttons. Also, if it is bright outside, dialing a number is a bit awkward. has anybody had the same problem and perhaps found a solution?
Yep, it's called Smartskey and it'll do exactly what you want. Do a search and you'll find all kinds of info about it.
Also look for FakeCursor. Works great!

I second that.
I also use WM5NewMenu and PHM TrayLaunch. Both of these let you arrange the menu/shortcut order to suit your needs and are navigable with the Dpad. With these two and smartskey my wizard is one thumbed use rather than one handed. I have managed easily without a stylus.
Regarding the visibility in bright daylight, try changing your theme/skin to something with more contrast or increasing the backlight settings. Alternatively use MSVoiceCommand or the standard voice dialer for existing contacts, I haven't had much luck with MSVoiceCommand recognising number strings correctly for new phone numbers though.
Thanks to all.
I have downloaded the smartskey and I'll give that a try. It seems to do what I want.
Regarding the dialing: As this is a phone, I'd like to see a dedicated number pad on it, or a remapping of the existing softbuttons to numbers. For example the DPAD (might) have 9 positions (if the corners are recognized differently than left or up), which could be mapped to 1-9. Add 1 other softbutton for 0 and you have a complete dialpad. Perhaps in another release ...
Brilliant

Ok, I think this is my first post, for I am a professional lurker and all, but I swear I jumped out of my chair when I read this. This is perfect. Perfect, brilliant idea, would solve the single greatest drawback of this phone IMO. PLEASE tell me that there is a way to make this happen. I know, for example, that smartskey remaps the d-pad buttons to open up contacts, recent call list, etc. So I'm guessing a little tweaking somewhere could make this happen? If not smartskey, a new program perhaps? Here is my promise: someone comes up with this program, and I'll make little numbers stickers to go around the d-pad (yeah, laugh, but I'll do it!)

input changer arrow too small

hate how small it is.... very hard to use without the stylus... is there an easier to use input changer that could be more touch friendly out there?
LOL SERIOUSLY! someone has to agree!
I agree but it's not worth the effort to alter.

you hurt my feelings
Try QuickMenu. It has a feature to change SIP.
It would be great to develop a small program with command line switching of SIP. Then we could assign certain SIPs to hardware buttons. Especially useful for skanndelus
been looking on the web for a tweak for this, can't seem to find anything relevant in any files or registry either
I agree, the arrow is way too small and it also takes far too long for the menu to pop-up.
THis is a serious issue for me as I write e-mails and text messages in dual languages every day. If that arrow was an ear hair bigger I could get it with my thumbnail....how frustrating!!!! What about adding an item to the tap-and-hold menu or making a switch I could assign to a hardware key? I would gladly donate $20 to someone who can fix this!
Try this little app...
Hi Lycox, the little app you posted is "phonepad" I think this is not a solution, but could be usefull if I could just hit the little arrow to select it from my really slow sip list.
Well I don't get it, it maybe just made phonepad the default sip, didn't think I had it installed.
Doh, now I get it, I assigned it to a button and of course Lycox, this is exactly what I wanted. Would be nice to just flip between two favourite sips, rather than go through them all, but I'll probably find out it does in a minute. Thanks anyway Lycox.
it's fantastic! Now we need to find a way to get rid of 'keyboard' and other SIPs we don't use. If there were just two on the list this would be it.
I don't find the arrow size as annoying as the time it takes for the menu to pup up.
I find it easier to go Start-> Settings-> Input and change things there. Silly really.
Just found this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=242503
Edit: but I can't get it to work.
found this at pocket gear http://classic.pocketgear.com/software_detail.asp?id=26285 but it's not free.
10$ ? That's a lot for a little tool. Anyway.
With the one posted by Lycox I get an error every time I do the full circle of input methods:
"SipSetCurrentIM Error=0".
Not a big issue, annoying nevertheless.
How to disable unused SIPs?

i figured out how to do this last night.... i'll see if i can find the link... it was just a matter of finding the reg keys under classes, then changing a dword value from 1 to 0 to remove it from the list.
Do NOT remove the default "keyboard" from the SIP list. If you do and something goes horribly wrong, you can be left with an inputless device.
can read about removing unused SIP modes from the list here...

Any way to add new softkeys on the bottom bar

Hi, is there any program or tweak to add one or more new softkeys on the bottom bar besides the original left and right softkeys?
The new softkey can be associated with different shortcuts for quick program loading/menu display/convenient operations on different programs' interface, (not just today screen). So it will give users an easy DIY method to improve some programs' users interface.
Thanks!

I did have done the search work quit a long time before posting this thread.
Actually I know lots of ways to re-map the softkeys and hard buttons. I also found the solution to add new options in the softkeys' menu list.
But my question is to ADD one/more new SOFTKEY. I do appreciate if you can just confirm me that you do have seen any solution for my question. Then I will do the search work harder but hopefully .
Thank you for your reply.
I have no answer for your problem but I am using BatteryStatus that allow to configure icons in the bottom of the screen.

Actually I know SKMenu can do this job, in some way. I am seeking a simple solution/program, which is more flexible and powerful for the above-mentioned purpose.
a far as i know there is no way for that. but if you need so much buttons i would use one of the many launchers.
Wisbar Advance 3 can show one more Button, I think!

Smartouch and Zoombar

I am trying to find a way to mess with
HKLM/Software/HTC/SmartTouch/ key in registry, which is supposed to control the zoom bar.
I did some research in several threads in this forum, but all I found was some info (mainly on TD1 threads) on how to make the zoom bar (or scroll wheel in TD1) produce scrolling in apps.
However, what I am interesting in, is ZOOMING within any kind of application. Any idea on how to achieve this? The aforementioned key contains values such as ClassName (which is the app's class, something that is not easy to figure out; any tool on finding out an app's class would be appreciated), WheelCount (which probably is sensitivity), and Mode (which I have no idea what it is).
Anyone could help with this?
I could imagine a few nice things to do with the Zoombar. As I'm missing the arrow keys, it would be great to define a few gestures to use up / down / left / right keys with the zoombar.
e.g.
slide to the right -> right key
slide to the left -> left key
tap on '+' -> up key
tap on '-' -> down key

Hi jcan,
Did you manage to find ways to resolve your question? Kindly share with me please!

Thanks for the link mattan, but I had already tried the Advanced Config solution... It is true that you can add Smartouch capability in active apps from there, but the problem is that I tried some (e.g. GSFinder+), and it worked as a scroll device.
What I am trying to find is a way to make the zoom bar work universally as its name says, i.e. zoom. It would be very nice to be able to zoom in anywhere in the device, like having a magnifying glass. Unfortunately, I haven't found anything yet but I know that the solution is hidden somewhere in the Smartouch reg key... Let's hope some fellow xda member will enlighten us!

Actually it's not, it's work like hardware Up/down key. In some case you can redefine action on it (In program settings), for example CorePlayer, or some games.
I think biotouch must be modified for this

What you would need to do it actually write an application that zooms the screen in hardware (similar to ctrl + mouse wheel zooming in Mac OSX) and control it with the zoom bar in applications that don't work with the zoom bar at present. I haven't actually used GSFinder+ but if doesn't have some sort of zoom level available to it through a menu function or on screen button then there is no way the zoombar will magically give it (or any other non-zooming program) one.
OK, I get it then... So, if an application does not support zooming, then the zoombar can only be used as a scroll device (or up-down key)...
I guess we will have to settle with that type of use then, until a screen zoom application comes up.

Floating Hotkey Overlay Buttons

Hi! I'm new to this forum, and I realise that I may be in the wrong area to ask questions. Please fee free to move this topic around as the mods see fit.
Ok... so I am a moderator on Twitch. I use the official Twitch app to view streams and Mod them. Without further adue, I need your help, XDA.
I have a full keyboard (Hacker's Keyboard) that supports CTRL+V... but When I need to paste multiple things into a text field, I am limited to whatever I have copied onto my clipboard. So my idea is an app that would allow one to make floating overlay buttons. Resize them to their needs, and then program them to insert a certain text into the selected text field. For example:
START APP→
Create New Button→
Select Size→
Button Lable→
Button Function/ Text To Paste→
CREATED.
Wereas Button Lable would be displayed on the floating button (i.e. "Purge Neon"), And Button Fucntion/Text would read the info to be pasted. (i.e. "/timeout NeonNightfall 1").
This would make it easier on me as a mod to easily Time/Ban people who are repeat violators. Especially Purging.
Even better, it would be amazing if I could make this button type each letter out individually, so that it types the text, and then hits the send/return key to finalize it. But Im not picky.
Does anyone know of an app that will suit my needs? Or similar to it? Or a combination of apps? I am not afraid to pay a little cash for them. (No more than$4.99 USD) Or is there any way someone could "make" me an app? I know...longshot lol.
Thank you all so much for your responses in advance. I have long been a follower of XDA and its forums, but now I am a member. Mad respect to you all, and thank uou for all you do for the community.
