I'm looking to purchase one of these devices but not sure which one. I belong to Cingular but I like the look of the T-mobile MDA. Is there anything majorly different from a hardware/software point between these two?
If I get the t-mobile mda will I have any issues using it with Cingular? I know I need to sim unlock it first. My main use of this phone is for calls and text messgs. I rarely use the internet but may do so more later on. Just want to make sure the T-mobile softeware will not interfere with cingular settings. Can someone enlighten me? How about flashing it to a non branded rom? Or a cingular rom if thats possible. lol
Great forum my da way!!!
i bought a tmobile mda for use on cingular because of the keyboard design and general asthetics od the thing. i did unlock it then flashed it to the 217.7.2wwe cingular rom found on this sites ftp section. it works great with text, internet, has great rf reception. only thing i havent tried with it is mms.
rest easy; it works. if you have more questions there are people here much more experienced than i.
hardwares deep inside, they are the same machine. Once you have it (either 8125 or MDA) you can do SIM & CID unlock and put in any ROM for wizard you'd like; if you get MDA you can put 8125 rom on it and has all the cingular settings (which you can set it up manually also with other ROMs)
The main concern is the warranty. You are with Cingular and if you get 8125, whenever you have problem with it within 1 year of purchase, you can get warranty exchange (cingular will send you a new one, and you send the bad one back to them after you recieve the new one, all free)
But if you have MDA, you will have to send it to HTC for repair which might take a long time to come back.

Great! just what I was looking for. I did not know you could install a cingular rom over another brand. soo cool. Did you use the lokiwiz program (which version??) to unlock both the sim and cid? Or another program? Same here I like the rounded corners and two tone keyboard. I wish t-mobile online would sell w/o contract since its a decent price. At the store its almost 100 more.
New to PPC coming from the Motorola camp....
Know to search for a MDA....
Be Careful
Be careful, some of the newer Wizards (MDAs & 8125s) have a newer chip inside referred to as the G4 chip. It is my understanding that lokiwiz will SIM unlock the device which will allow you to use your Cingular SIM card. However, lokiwiz won't CID unlock the MDA with the new chip. So you won't be able to use all the new custom ROMs on ths site.
It is pretty easy to manually configure the setting so the MDA will work fully on Cingular. I have the 8125 and am using T-mobile. The internet, text messanging, and MMS work great.
Check out the threads on the Wizard Upgrading forum for more info. on how to tell which chip your phone has.
Thanks for the tip. I've read some threads about the dreaded G4 chip. Hopefully someone will crack it soon. There is a website that can unlock the G4 chip both sim and cid but it costs like 40 bucks. Worst case I can send it to them.
jdub71: How is the ear piece sound level on the MDA when on a call? how do you rate it? loud, med. or could be louder despite on full volume.
rambo6: Same question. How is you're ear piece volume level on the 8125?
PC mag suggested that the MDA had a lower ear piece volume than the 8125. I wanted to hear from actual users. Louder the better for me. Is there a reg. hack to make the ear piece volume louder? Thanks
I'm running an MDA on Cingular with no problems. Got it a week ago with every intention of flashing to 8125 cingular, but it seems to have figured out most Cingular settings automatically. No problems.... yet.
I don't see how one Wizard could be louder than another.
Have turn it down on both my plantronics bluetooth and wired earphones.
Couple of other quality control concerns with the MDA versus the 8125, I've heard that the MDA is more prone to having the paint come off the keys and that they are also more prone to having the stylus come loose after prolonged usage.
Don't have a MDA, only a 8125, but that's what I have gathered from reading the forums.
[double post]
How do you go about finding out what ROM version you have and also how do you tell if you have successfully unlocked your MDA?
Also how do you tell if you have the "G4" chip?
Thanks
Good question. I want a custom rom too.
8125ppc (and htc just updated)
You can go to the thread below to learn how to tell which chip is in your Wizard.
Also, I have great sound through the 8125's earpiece. Sometimes I have to turn it down.
My suggestion is buy whichever phone you want. The MDA has keys that are a little closer together. I'd suggest you look at both in person. You can buy either in the US through letstalk.com without a contract but the phone will be set up for either Cingular or T-mobile and you'll need to unlock it to use another carrier.
If you can hold off a few months, the TyTN or some UMTS form thereof should be offered in the U.S.
T-mobile is great but it will be at least a year before they get a 3G network going. Cingular is the only carrier in the U.S. with a 3G UMTS network in major cities. It's significantly faster than Edge but not as fast as Verizon's evdo.
I hope that HTC offers some phone to work on both the US and European UMTS/HSDPA networks soon. Some form of TyTN or the Trion would do it.
Once you start surfing the web and texting with a Wizard, you'll get addicted and want more speed. Verizion's evdo is so damn fast. I miss verizon's speed but love my Wizard and hope to have the newest HTC phone soon

After read many many threads on these it does seem like the 8125 has a better build quality than the MDA. Sound quality may also be superior since alot of MDA owners are complaing about sound issues. I was going to get the MDA but now I'm leaning on the 8125. Main reason is availability. Its easier for me to get the 8125 since I'm on cingular. I'm just worried about the sound volume being too low. I've read about the slider not working and such.....many requests to boost the sound but no real answer.
Hmm. New phone called the TyTN? Made also by HTC? May look into that also.
My friend has a T-Mobile MDA and I have the Cingular 8125. He has the original rom that came with the phone and I have the latest one 2.25. We were at my friends basement he had 3-4 bars of connection while I had non or 1 bar. He always has better connection then me.

Okay,let's see here.....
1) Are you both using the same carriers ?
If yes to above, it is a Rom issue.
If no to above, then it is pretty obvious as to the reason for the different signal levels!
I have a Qtek 9100 Wizard with the summiter custom Cingular 2.24 rom and can tell you for a fact that different roms DO act differently.Even roms from the same carriers, I might add! LOL
Later........
Yeah like I said he has T-Mobile and I have Cingular. He has the original rom and I have that new one http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=54726 Even with summiter 2.24 rom that I had last month he still had way better connection in my friends basement.

That's just to compare Cingular v.s. Tmobile signal, NOT 8125 v.s. MDA.
If your 8125 is SIM unlocked, try put in your friend's SIM card and see how is the signal on your phone; should be much better than your SIM.
.....Like I said, different carriers= different towers =different signal strength. As was said above, if sim unlocked, swap sims and see what happens.
Later.......
I never tought about that, I'll try the sim change next time.
I just recently got a t-mobile to go sim card. It works perfectly in all my other phones, and when i put it in my unlocked 8525, i could make and recieve calls, but no one could hear me whatsoever, i couldn't use any automated setups either those couldn't pick up anything either. are the specific settings for t-mobile that i need to use? The voice recording feature in notes works fine, but im not sure if it uses a seperate mic for phone. Speakerphone and the headset does not make a diference, also, I can hear myself on the phone.
I have the latest HTC Qtek rom and I have bootloader 1.09
Has anyone had this problem and can anyone help me?
I also tried it with a cingular sim card and there is still no voice
I hard reset the device and tried both sim cards and it still didn't work. is my 8525 broken? Also sometimes when I try and turn off the phone in the comm manager, it turns right back on and i get invalid sim and no service unusually often, and other times it. I think this might be a radio problem.
Does no one want to help me? or does no one know how to?

I think we don't know how. Can you access another sim from another operator and try that. I'm inclined to think there is more than just a software tweak required here and that there is a more serious fault.

Well, I tried both a t-mobile sim card, and a cingular sim card. neither worked. Also I'm pretty sure that this all started happening after I unlocked it using an unlocked code that I got from a remote imei unlocker, is there any way to reverse that? to make it locked to cingular again?
Gentlemen / ladies
first off i would like to thank this site for all its help so far , i have installed colonels rom and i am delighted with it , however i have a small question.
i purchased the sprint mogul while visiting the states last week as i needed a pda and it seemed to fit all my desires , however upon bringing it home i noticed that there was no simcard slot so i cant use it here in Ireland (we seem to be a bit behind the times ) spoke to a rep here and i was told the simcard is inbuilt and it would need to go back to htc to be changed , now that isnt really feasible at the moment so i was wondering if it was possible for me to change it out or if that is even possible , i dont mind taking it apart but i can find no info on where the sim goes or if there even is one , sooooooo just wondering is it possible ?
thanks again for all the help i have recived from other threads on upgrading and thanks to the colonel for releasing a class rom
regards
To the best of my knowledge, CDMA phones don't use sim cards at all. I could be wrong.

Uh, for in Ireland you have a paperweight. There is no CDMA outside North America. There is no sim in the Mogul, and nothing in it can be reprogrammed to make it work on GSM. The entire radio portion of the phone is made for CDMA and specifically Sprint.
Sorry, but you'd be better off ebaying it and getting a GSM device.

To my knowledge, this statement isn't entirely true, as I believe that South Korea and maybe China has CDMA networks...but I could be wrong...
Everything else you stated is right on though!
Oh boy.
In a nutshell:
2 major types of wireless protocols:
GSM and CDMA.
GSM is a sim-card based allowing phone portability, and exists on a world-wide market. The sim card contains your identity, and switching it into another phone causes your identity to follow.
CDMA is phone-based, meaning every phone has a unique ID that broadcasts to the tower. That ID (sort of like the VIN number on a car) exists on only your phone, and represents your ID on the network. This actually existed long before GSM and SIM-cards, and is at a bit of a disadvantage because you can't switch phones whenver you want. Your provider has to switch it for you.
Here in the US, we have both CDMA and GSM networks now, however CDMA has been around longer, and so it is still arguably the more common technology. Lately, GSM has been catching up, but over in Europe GSM has always been around and CDMA is virtually non-existant.
Living in Ireland, I beleive that all networks are GSM, which means SIM-card based. So, you probably didn't know that there were other types of technology that weren't compatible! If anything, we here in the US are "behind the times" because we're still using an antiquated ID system as opposed to SIM cards!
HTC makes a GSM version of these devices as well, which you should consider. They are known as the Tytn and the Kaiser (our Mogul/Titan sort of comes in between, although most closely resembling the Kaiser in hardware). Next time you want to buy a phone in the US, make sure its GSM and unlocked first!
Hope this clears things up!
You should have 30 days to send back the mogul and get out of your contract. The phone will not work outside of North America. Take a look at the HTC Kaiser, its also sold as the AT&T Tilt. Its a GSM device that is very similar to the Mogul.
If you told Sprint that you were going to be going back to Ireland, I wonder why they didn't sell you the Samsung IP-830W, which works on the Sprint CDMA network in the states, but can be used on GSM/GPRS networks everyplace else.
If you can't get a full refund, maybe you can exchange the Mogul for that?
I think it's a little behind the times, but the IP830 is a pretty good phone and has a smaller slide out QWERTY keyboard.
thank you for the information , just need to find that damn receipt now and give radioshack a call , see about a swap for the tilt ,
regards
sigghhh
well it seems radioshack cant help . unless i brought it back to the store i purchased it in , and that cant really happen .
anywhoooo thanks all for the help ,
but i have just one other ,
is it possible to synq my titan with another type of phone i.e nokia 6610 and have the titan act as the handsfree ? via bluetooth?
basically like the satnavs where you have the dialer but it uses your phone to connect , seems like a strange request but this would at least allow me to use the phone features
thanks in advance

Problem cant unlock phone
Well heres what I figured out for my Touch,
-In Vista the Windows Mobile Device Center allows me to browse and perform all tasks like as if there were no password
-In XP ActiveSync says the Device is locked and unlock it.
-After searching for a way to backup my phone so I can do a Hard Reset I found out that there should be a feature call Backup/Restore which was no where to be found in WMDC
(I also synced my Treo700wx and the feature didnt appeared for that phone either)
So, my question is whats the best way to backup everything because I do have access to the phones file through Vista. Thanks in advance!!! PLZ HELPP
use an app like spb backup or sprite backup

Yea but on the phone I am stuck at the lock screen, the only way I can access the phone files is through Windows Mobile Device Center in Vista. In XP it says to unlock it but I cant.
Where is the Sim Card to swap?
I have read the thread on the elf unlocker, touch unlocker, and many others. However, I haven't found anywhere where to swap the sim cards. Where is the Sim card located, I hope I am just being an idiot and it's right under my nose.
Can someone please tell me where the sim card is, and if they have successfully unlocked the Sprint Touch in the (USA)?
I spent a whole day on trying to figure this out, and still haven't. Wishing for a good semaritan to help walk me through. Thanks.
Ryan

Unlocking Sprint Touch Vogue w/ no SIM
Thanks for the reply. I shourtly found out there is no SIM Card, so to get straight to the point, is there any way to get the Touch Vogue to work on T-mobile (USA)'s network without having a SIM Card.
T-mobile said there is no way to use a phone on their network without a SIM Card.
Background: I had my T-mobile Dash stolen. Now thinking I could unlock it, I got a Sprint Touch from a friend who bought the I-Phone instead. Can I use it, or should I simply resell it?
Please help. Would anyone be kind enough to communicate via email for quicker response? [email protected]
can you unlock the sprint touch and
use it on verizon?? if so how do you do it??

Ryan, not quite sure how you mucked this up, but you did. There are two main cell network types in the USA. ATT and T-mo use GSM, which has SIM cards. Verizon and Sprint use CDMA.
You CANNOT move a CDMA phone to GSM and vice versa. They use different radio frequencies, so it would be like trying to listen to an AM station with an FM radio.

Short answer, no.
Long answer is that these networks are still locked. Verizon and Sprint are CDMA carriers. In other parts of the world (Korea), CDMA carriers have the equivalent of SIM cards. In those places you can just swap out the cards, and you're all set. A long time ago our carriers decided not to implement this functionality. As a result, Verizon and Sprint cannot swap phones.
In the future, you may be able to bring other phones on the Verizon network. There is an initiative in progress that should provide for a way to test and approve devices for use. This won't happen for another year or so, so don't hold your breath.

ok first the hardspl has already been done by comex second I have already posted in the forms to hack the phone to make calls unable to receive. sorry no rom developed because I don't know how to cook use the search function using the word CDMA and you should find it I tried long and hard at getting bluetooth and sd card to work but this looks like it is going to require a hardware mod. third even with being able to make phone calls sprint has it in their inventory that this is a data only device and will not change it but yes maybe if you can get the esn # changed you can connect it on sprint network but the phone will work on other CDMA carrier's network I have one on cricKet working with phone calls and headset

i did see were you and comex were working on it but there was never a link to the hardspl or the rom the two of you were working on
i also seen the other xda thread were some one said they had a rom and every one who used it had nothen but problems
same thing with the rest of of the threads ive seen on the net
as far as the bluetooth its a softwear thing
the cdma shift can do every thing the sim card one can do
the problem is theres not alot of cdma owners out there so the hackers dont spend the time on it that it needs to work the bugs out
if we can get a number of guys together willing to chip in some one might think its worth there time

just simply follow the instructions posted at the begining of this thread you dont really need to download anything except the Shift Packs and a registry editor you don't even need to download the hardspl to make this work and again I state there is nothin NOTHING TO FLASH NO ROM THE ROM IN THE ZIP FOLDER IS ONE I WAS PLAYING WITH THAT AGAIN DOSE NOT WORK THE ONLY ORGINAL ROM IN THE FOLDER IS ONE I GOT FROM COMEX WHICH IS THE ORGINAL CDMA ROM WITH SOME FUNKY NAME LIKE ATLANTIS OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT. now the only real diffrance between the cdma and the gsm is CDMA gps dose not work to know working drivers inclueding the one for GSM and a the headset and mic works right after the hack "delete Block Voice_MO" so in some ways better the only reason i belive hardware mod will probaly be needed for SD_card and Bluetooth is because those are located on the pc side of the board so without power the cant even have the chance of being seen by snapvue unless the pc side is on. I will state again FLASH nothing.
