Short battery life on HTC, is this what you are seeing?

I've read a few posts on HTC Wizard battery life and I'm trying to quantify what I'm seeing (which is hard given varying conditions under which the device can be used and what features are active but I'll attempt that here). I'd really like to hear what other pepole are experiencing under similar conditoins.
I’m getting about two days worth of battery life before the unit is warning that the device needs to be recharged. Here’s what I’ve done with it over the past 2 days:
· 47 minutes time spent using the phone. I get the full 4 signal bars just about everywhere I go, including and the office and at home. I have not used the speakerphone at all.
· About 1 hour of PDA use
· Bluetooth and WiFi have been off. There was no GPRS use during this time.
· The screen brightness is set to the lowest level possible, one setting above the backlight being completely off.
· When on battery power, the backlight automatically shuts itself off after 30 seconds and the device turns itself off completely after one minute.
· I’m running Windows Mobile 5.0
The battery currently reads 18% after 2 days.
Is this in line with what other people are seeing?

I used to drain my wizard to about 50-60% in one day (from morning to evening), when I still let it go to standby, so that seems about right. It goes down a bit faster now because I always leave it on (just let the backlight go off of course) so agile messenger will stay online...
I'm pretty sure this battery life is pretty good for a pda phone though, you can't compare this to a regular phone.
I always connect it to the charger at night so it's no problem for me, and I bring a very small usb cable (like 15 cm) when I don't sleep at home. Usually there's an opportunity to connect the wizard to a computer somewhere so it'll charge, the computer doesn't need to recognize the wizard for that.

I need to charge my Wizard evry night, if it's friday with party etc alot of calls i need to have my samsung d600 with me becuase the qtek goes empty around 23.oo :/

Just done a typical "intensive" day, and I'm really pleased of that thing. Here's what I've done:
~50 min on the phone
~2h30 MP3 playing with TCPMP, LCD off of course
~30min e-mail and internet through wireless
obviously a bit more PDA use, cause uptime meter says 4h39 :wink:
I still have 54% battery at the moment.
Useful to mention, forgot to turn off wireless after browsing, so it stayed on for like 1hr with device off, and that still drains juice.
Backlight is set at the middle.
Once again, my BA would be dead by now. I had ~4h PDA use at standard clock settings, 2hr with wireless on. The Wizard just doubles both these figures. I definitely understand why they've dropped that guzzling XScale... wish there could be an optimised version of TCPMP soon though, video playback is the only thing where i see a real difference in speed, haven't managed to have a video playing smooth without hangups yet.
Skype doesn't run well, but it didn't either with the BA without overclocking it at the maximum it would hold, giving a stunning 1h30 battery life (with wireless on obviously). The device was really hot while doing this, and the standard charger would not give enough current even to power the device, battery was still going down when connected. Had to use a 2A Axim adapter to charge while skyping :shock:
So definitively a GREAT improvement.

I used my MDA Vario the other day and it went down to 18% in approx 4 1/2 hours.
Screen was at max brightness and on for the whole time,
Tom Tom running.
Bluetooth on
About what I'd expect. I don't think my Treo 650 would be much better in similar circumstances.

I just updated the other thread about the battery that up till now its been fine but two days ago the dreaded issue started with me too
I've just lost 20% in 3 hours without doing anything (its been off since)

AKU2 rom gives a definite improvement, I can have 85% left after a day of normal use.

Which AKU2 rom. T mobile hasn't released one for my phone yet, to my knowledge.

The qtek rom, many vario users are using this rom out of frustration for t-mobile not releasing theirs.

Hey if you upgrade the ROM you should run some tests before installing any applications. It would be a definite advantage to make sure it's not some buggy app that's causing your battery drain.

agreed... I think that is my issue too that it could be a memory leak somewhere in one of the programs
can only put it down to registrywizard, uptime, or resco, the latter i doubt very much though

I upgraded my vario to the newest imate rom and would totally recommend doing so.. my battery life is about double what it used to be now (may have installed something dodgy that was draining it though)
Its also much faster in operation and seems to be a lot more stable too (I suffered a lot from the random reboot problem previously)

what did you upgrade from?
and what rom version are you running? the ones on the ftp for kjam are numbered a bit strange and can be confusing

The numbers are confusing for me as a noob to WM5/wizard.
What is the difference between the Qtek & the Imate roms?

WiFi doesn't drain battery when the device is turned off, cause the WiFi module will also be turned off automatically - just test it: leave WiFi on and press the power button - after a few hours look at the effect on the battery... :wink:
I usually recharge my Vario every 3-4 days. Although I don't use WiFi and I also don't make many long calls I usually use GPRS always on to receive my mails. I also use BT quite often to listen to music over my A2DP headset - maybe one hour per day on average...
So there must be something wrong with the devices of some of the people posting here... :!:

Battery Life

My wizard seems to have an amazingly long battery life.
After owning every previous XDA (1, 2, 2s, 2i) I expect - in fact demand - that my PDA needs charging daily.
I feel positively cheated by the fact that I hardly ever seem to need to charge my Wizard - it goes for days without seeing the USB cable; I just checked it after four days and it still had 40% power left. Plus even if I do let it run down I still don't lose my data. What do HTC think they are doing?
I'll definitely be sending mine back.
Anybody got an old Rex going spare?

i'm confused... why you sending it back? mines been running for i'd say about 24 hours since i took it off its initial charge cycle and its at 52%

I actually have two rexi. They're still pretty much the cutest PDA I ever saw. Got them when I was in Singapore, was so chuffed! Reading ebooks on the bus was a new idea back then :shock: Needs a new battery now though!

If you really wanna drain the battery, just surf using wifi with the screen on full bright & powersave mode off. it'll be just like using a crappy old PDA (battery wise) - dead within a few hours :lol:

I have just noticed that my wizard battery lasts much longer (a few days also) when I charge it with the USB cable (attached to PC). It seems that, for some reason, the power adapter does not charge it the way it should (it reaches 100% in a couple of hours while it takes longer with USB sync cable)...
Am I the only one ?

Prophet's battery is dreadful...

Hey guys, I'm satisfied with almost every aspect of the prophet, except battery time...
I mean in suspend the battery is great. But what if you want to do any real work on the prophet? This is what I get:
Screen off, Wifi on (useful for skype, IMs etc.)
3.45 hrs from full charge
Screen on, all else off (word processing, games etc.)
3.50 hrs from full charge
Screen on, Wifi on (email, internet)
3.40 hrs from full charge
Now tell me if this is not too little?
This is off course with normal battery.

You could set your screen to the lowest brightness that you can use also set the wifi to its lowest power setting these 2 functiions are the biggest users of power in my view

Radio ON, Wifi OFF, Screen backlight at level 2 or 3 (when outside). Some data connections, few Wifi cnx too (then turned OFF), 1 or 2 syncs using Bluetooth and my SPV M600 battery runs about 5Hrs according to my "upmeter" ( free at http://ae.inc.ru )
You can buy on Ebay a 1800mah bat. (50% more power than the original bat.)

Is that 1800 mAh battery with extended thickness? if not it might be worth it.
I dont use phm tray launcher. But wifi and display are on quite frequently.

I do have PHM TrayLaunch installed but did not notice faster battery drain. Is this something you just experienced or did anyone else comment about this problem?

Battery is way shorter in the Prophet than in any other device i've had before. Same usage of course.
I could live with this limit, but can not stand with some other wm5 imposse on us, such as max size on contact notes field, or the inability to sync via BT.

I am not sure its shorter than in other devices of similar features, but I do know for me its not enough. I think the Jam would actually be way shorter with Xscale over omap processor. So no, i would not say you've made the wrong choice.

BT syncing simply does not work. Maybe it's a matter of XP-WM5 combination, but fact is that my prophet "does not find a PC with the active Sync service" Any help on that?
I've been able to get TomTom 5 to work, pair with several headsets and handsfree devices, but no way around the Active Sync issue, no matter what the COM ports or tricks I've tried. I even changed BT drivers from Widcomm to MS in my notebook, same result.

Well just to let the curious know, I received the 1800 mah battery, the one also priced on ebay, with NO thickness increase, and I cannot believe it...
It just keeps going and going and going. I did the same tests as above, and could not get it to run out.
Wifi on (all else off) lasted for about five hours and was still arround 68%
Screen on all else off lasted for about 6 hours from an 85% charge and it was still on 39%...
I mean I know the math 1800 is 50% more than 1200, but I seem to be getting A LOT more than 50%. Any explanations?

Sync via Bluetooth is perfectly working for me.
You have to create a BlueTooth Com Port from your PC. Just follow instructions in ActiveSync Help File.
I can listen to mp3 for more than 4hours with screen off... and with a BlueTooth Headset... Maybe it's draining less power coz it just sends the signal and doesn't have to use external speakers...
hum... the 1800mh battery seems great... is it really good quality ?

I will keep you posted as I keep testing it in the next few days, but so far I'm impressed.
The maker is the same as the original battery (DynaPack) so quality is the same.

The battery is shorter because the phone is always registering on the GSM network.
It has some kind of bug in it.
You can check this by going to Settings > Phone > Network and check that the current network is sometimes flashing "home service" instead of the name of the operator.

anyone seen 2500mah ? I'm trying to find out if it bigger.

2500mah? seems kinda fake to me if it is the same size and thickness as a 1200mah or 1800mah battery.
The 1800mah extended battery is possible because they removed the hard plastic cover on top of the battery so they can fit a slight bigger capacity battery.

these 1800mah batteries (says not dynopack on ad, just chinese copy!) are they much heavier, i have just ordered one, bit concerned they may actually be lithium ion (not lithium polymer)

I'm almost have to recharge my Touch every single day! And in mine opinion I don't use it very extremely. Didn't have that issue with my TyTn!

With my TyTN II (Kaiser) I have the same bad experience, drained in less then 1/2 day. Same with some other devices. But I think this is typical for this device class. With some directives the battery power can be saved:
- disable WLAN when going outwards
- reduce display brightness
- disable/shutdown GPS apps if not used
- buy a car kit ;-)
In my opinion WLAN and the display are the most power consuming parts.

You are welcome. I am still playing with my new Blackstone, but I think with "normal" usage the operating distance will be 2..3 days.

Had a problem trying to charge it in my car for the first time. On a 3 hour journey with about 1/4 battery level left and running pocket player and TomTom when I got home still only 1/4 (or maybe even less) battery power left. I charge it through the USB port in the car stereo. Never had that problem with Polaris under same conditions. Seems ok at home running the same programmes and charging through the mains.
Any one else having trouble charging in a car?

I hope it stands more than one day only. Xperia has better values, my friend told me, it lasts two days more...

with heavy usage but turning off WiFi outdoors battery life has been pretty good lasts a day and a half.

In 3G mode, only with two full charges and a bit of heavy usage, cause I only have my HD from last friday, it's been lasting for about 1,5 day. I'm going to test it about one more week and then I'm going to test it in normal GSM mode.

With heavy usage lasting about a day.
2 hours movie
1 hr mp3
30 min calls
10+ text messages
1 hour internet through wifi
12 hrs standby
5 minutes google maps
Maybe 1 hr playing with my new toy (screen lit)
Probably about 2-3 days when my usage goes back to "normal".

I've charged my HD @ 15 o'clock and now is on 72% of battery

I have usually a heavy use on it (i.e. too much talking over BT headphone, regular wifi email exchange, rss update etc.).
I used to see it drain easily until I used the advance configuration to fix sd management, connection management etc. For some reason everything was off on mine.
Now with (fairly) regular use it can go one and half day almost.

True, no need for WLAN to be on when on the move. It's the most power consuming antenna in your phone. You can set it to disable if it can't find an access point for 1 minute. Bluetooth is also a killer... These phones are stuffed with radio's, don't turn them on all at once.

Oh, and my phone easily lasts a day, and I tinker with it all the friggin time, and use it quite a bit. But I only activate stuff when I need it, such as wifi, bluetooth, direct push. I rarely use GPS, yes of course this drains your battery in 4 hours, just like when you would place a call or watch a video or browse the web for 4 hours. Anything that uses a lot of radio activity or a lot of screen on-time will drain your battery fast.
I optimized power saving modes with schaps advanced config and turn the thing off at night.
Push email on winmo or apple phones is a joke. The way it requires to keep a GPRS connection alive is ridiculous. Blackberry understands this a lot better.
If you don't use it, you might as well turn GRPS auto attach off using schaps advanced config tool since that too will save a lot of battery time.

Recharged 20 hours ago. Normal use. GPRS Data Connection on, e-mail push each hour (i have flatrate) and i have 85% of battery left.

Bad Battery! - Possible cause?

First of, YES I USED THE SEARCH FUNCTION .
My battery life is absolute horrid right now, and I tried everything.
I tried out different roms, every radio, deleting programs, hard resetting tons of times. I even bought a new 1500 mAh battery but it was still crap.
Battery log says my device in standby mode with the screen turned of uses -70ma, when I turn my screen up it jumps to -320ma, and when idle on the screen for a few sec it goes to -200 ma, but when I browse through stuff again it goes to 3xxma again. When I surf on the internet it picks up to 450-500ma.
Now, this morning with the 1500 mAh battery fully charged I played a few games of XTRAKT, few texts, 1 hour of music listening and 10 minutes of being on Opera through a HSDPA connection. It was down to 45%.
This isn't the normal rate the battery goes down at right?
I use HDtweak to manage my connection and put it off after a minute so it isn't that I keep dataconnections open. I never use bluetooth or wifi either.
Could it possibly be that it's the charger of the device? I perhaps have the feeling that it doesn't put enough juice into the battery even though the green light led goes on to indicate it's full.
Some feedback would be much appreciated cause it's put me on the edge of selling my device, which would be a shame cause I'm really fond of it (except the battery ofcourse ).

May I ask what you searched, as there are 3 or 4 active threads on battery drain right now?

General battery drain yes, not the possible issue of a charger though. If I'm wrong I stand corrected. .

I'll try this, I have noticed that today my storage card won't be read by my computer, so perhaps this is a fix for the lousy battery issue.

Hi Antrak,
Touch HD has the longest battery life of any similar 'phone. See e.g.

Either your battery is not charging correctly, as you say (try it via the PC USB cord?), or you have two dud batteries in a row (very unlikely) or you have a bug in your m/board. 70mA in standby is too high. It should be <20mA with only the 'phone on in standby mode, providing you are not moving from one cell to another all the time, and have decent signal.
One other suggestion. Drain the battery completely to zero, then recharge it to max. This should reset the internal battery meter. But don't do this too often, as it ages the battery faster.
If none of these work, return the 'phone for a m/board replacement undere guarantee.

I have the same problem... After charging for 10 hours, my batt shows 55% only.. and last 1hr on STANDbY!!!
IMAGINE! charge for 10hrs juz to get to use for 1 hr.. im disappointed by the batt.. im not sure if HTC is gona let me exchange with a new one or do I have to buy a new batt..

try check your sync..its active all the time or not..

find the threat to make a fake account for sync, so you can active it manually.
so your battery will stand more longer,

Okay I've charged my HD through my pc with a USB cable and formatted my SD card like a other user said. Gonna see how it holds out today. It could very well be that some chargers have issues.

My experience with the Touch HD says that when charged with a USB attached to a computer the battery life is a lot shorter than charged through a wall socket.

This is always going to be the case. Quickest way to charge your device will always be through your wall socket and with your device turned off!!

Same battery issue.
i recently purchased a new touch HD (T8285 telstra version) and am experiencing the same horrible battery issues. it takes more time to charge it, than i get use out of it.
i've tried multiple batteries, and am in the process of trying different ROMs.

Indeed, here's an illustration...

Charging via USB takes longer. Consumption and therefore charge current is erratic after the battery level reaches 50% when charging via USB on my HD. So the battery fills up to about 60% of its capacity by the time when the battery level is reported to be 100% and charging stops.

When charging with an AC adapter this is not happening and the capacity is fully utilized. This is also quicker.

That's strange. For me it's quicker if the device is turned on. When it's off it takes around 8-10 hours to charge but when it's on it's alot quicker.

hmmm, I don't know how this is possible?
If your device is on there is always power outage especially with programmes running, whilst if your device is off, there is no power drainage so device should charge quicker.
What rom are you using? software installed?

Latest official rom with alot of software installed. But it doens't make sence to me either. It's logical for something to charge faster when it's using no power (off) then when it is using power (on).

I have a gut feeling from what I'm reading, that HTC have had a bad batch of batteries or charger circuits in the HD - in which case the best starting point is to call their service points and ask for help/replacement, instead of spending lots of time on other remedies. The symptoms described have lots of commonalities, and the HD is normally an excellent beastie for battery usage.

Heya,
Don't know what it is but my battery life increased a tad. Am running Dutty's X3.0 with the 1.32.x.x. radio. Watching a 1 hour xvid dvd rip (no conversion) in coreplayer on full backlight with no HSDPA on, wifi or bluetooth takes away 20% of my battery, which is acceptable.
Don't think it's the SD card format though, it might be that I never have the activesync process on anymore by setting it to manual update and closing it (it otherwise keeps running.)
