Can anybody give me (or point me to a link) the "Remote Kernel Tracker" tool...It is not installed with Visual Studio 2005. I came to know that it comes only with eVC++, but I dont want to download and install the complete eVC++ package now.
So, can anybody help me out on this?
Additionally, can you tell me what tools do you use to debug the remote device processes (messages exchanged between them, events generated etc)...

Hi,
I've been using emBedded visual C++ for 2-3 years writing application for pocket PC ( Mainly Ipaq'a).
I've recentrly invested in a Xda but when I attempt to "update my remote output file" from with embedded VC ++" i get the following error:
" Microsoft Active sync connection server failed, Please make sure active sync is running and retry the download etc.."
Of course Activate sync is running, and running correctly, Has anyone had this issue before ?
I can manually copy my executable to my device and run it,but then I can't debug. I'm in the process of download VC 4.0 and going to try that, but really wold like to runing in under the 3.0 version.
Any comments would be appreicated.
Bad news dude, eVC++ works only with PocketPC 2000 + 2002. The development environment you'll need to develop on 2003+ is either eVC++ 4.0 or Microsoft Visual Studio.NET.
Thanks for the update,
I've installed Embedded VC 4.0 and the SP3, Now I can download to my XDA which is great.
Now I want to maintain backwards compatiable and download to my ipaqs in 2002, I can't change the actiive configuration to PPC2002
Is there a way to compile my application for both 2002 and 2003 using VC 4.0 or do I need to maintain both IDE's
Sorry but there's no way to maintain both 2K2 and 2K3 targets from eVC 4. You can have the same set of source code but eVC 3 + 4 have different project file types. Have a project per IDE containing the same source code. Just remember when you add files to the project you're working on, remember to add the files to the other platform's project as well.
Happy coding!

is there a namespace to get the list of progams currently running on the smartphone ????
and if there isn't what dll should i interop to do that ?!!!
thanks!!!
ToolHelp Reference
If you just want to do it once, use the remote tools that come with Embedded C++ or Visual Studio. If you want to get it within your program, see the ToolHelp Reference. (search for toolhelp at microsoft.com) You'll find such functions as:
CreateToolhelp32Snapshot
Process32First
Process32Next
Since you asked for the dll, toolhelp uses toolhelp.dll
Hey everyone I got this 8525 from a friend he switched over to the Iphone for whatever reason anyways I work on an application that is java based. I have Pimp my Black v0.1 and HTweakc 2.1 on this phone. I went and download to my phone our application its a normal install wizard but when i try to run it I get that error "is not a valid Pocket PC application" I have turned on the Security Tweaks to allow non-certified applications. is there another application I can install to the phone that will allow me to run this java program?
if you make it jad extention i guess you can run it in a midlet manager
I want to modify the messaging program but I've not done any WM coding before. I've looked at a number of posts on the forum and taken a look at the wiki but I'm still totally confused about where to start.
My current view is that I need to:
Extract the messaging program from the ROM I'm using
Is this possible? If so, what tools do I need? I found a few utilities that look promising on the wiki but there is no documentation for them so I've got no idea how to use them.
Disassemble the program
Can I do this with Visual Studio? Ideally I would like to step through the execution to find the bits I need to change, can I do that with the extracted program in the WM emulator? Or can I do it directly on my PDA?
Patch the program
I can probably figure this bit out by myself.
Get the patched program onto my PDA
As the program is in ROM, I'm assuming I'll have to re-make the ROM. Or can ROM files be updated/overwritten without rebuilding the ROM?
Each of those steps is assuming the previous one is the correct approach and is actually possible. I'm not looking for hand holding at every step, just some good pointers to relevant information and tools. Thanks.
0. - which programm you want to hack ?
1. What type of PDA you use ?
for example - for hx4700 -
prepare_imgfs.exe dump.dat
viewimgfs.exe imgfs_raw_data.bin
2. IDA - diassemble, or Visual Studio for debugging - if you know how
3. What type of PDA you use ?
for example - for hx4700 - like vivi kitchen.
4. ...
Thanks for your reply.

The messaging program, is it called Outlook Mobile? Do you know if it is native or managed code? If not, what's the easiest way to tell?

I've got a Kaiser. Currently running "udK 8.0 R0 Vega" ROM (WM6.1). Forgot to mention that in my previous post.

Does IDA support remote debugging on Windows Mobile? Also, are there any restrictions on what you can debug in VS, ie. do they stop you from debugging things you don't have the source for or are Microsoft applications (eg. Outlook) restricted from debugging in some way?
I'm finding it really hard to get decent information on these kinds of things. If I actually manage to get anywhere with this then I'll write up some kind of guide for the wiki.
Ok, I've used this tool to extract the ROM and get a file called 00_OS.nb. I then got these tools and managed to dump the NB file so that I now have all of the files inside the ROM.
I've been playing about with IDA but when I try and run poutlook.exe in the debugger, it runs but exits straight away (ie. it doesn't create a window on the PDA). I tried copying poutlook.exe onto my device but it doesn't run, I think I need to get it running from the exe before I do anymore IDA stuff. I remember reading somewhere that executables in the ROM image have been manipulated in some way (addresses rewritten or relocated or something), is that what is affecting it? Or do I need to run some additional tool on the extracted exe before it will run standalone?
How do I get an executable extracted from the ROM to run on my device? Or do I have to roll it all up into a ROM for it to work?
Hi. So I just got a dump of my iPAQ 110, and I found this file. Earlier i stumbled onto this article:
http://www.ekhoury.com/2006/04/21/how-to-make-msn-messenger-add-ins/
Unfortunately this doesn't work for the latest messenger on the PC, but I was wondering if i can do something similar to make plugins for the mobile messenger. I tried to start a "Smart Device" project in VS2008 (I already have the wm6.0 sdk refresh installed), and then add this dll as a reference, but I get "A reference to "WLMMessengerplugin.dll" could not be added.", and when i click the help button it links me to an article saying this:
The project you are trying to load targets a device platform that your Visual Studio installation is not configured to support.
To correct this error
Install the platform that supports the project you want to load.
Anyone had any success with this?
