Suggestion for a Calendar today plugin - Advantage X7500, MDA Ameo General

When using TrueVGA, I get a lot of "extra space" on the ToDay screen and I would like to display some more upcomming events (from the calendar). I tried Calendar+, but whit this installed WM5torage wouldn't work so it had to go.
Do you have a calendar plugin to recommend? Preferably free...

The best today plugin (but unfortunately not free..) has got to be SPB Diary 2 (and WM5torage works with it). I completely replace the Today screen with it as it does Diary with integrated Tasks, Tasks, Contacts, Notes (including office docs), Mail and 'Special Events' like Birthdays/Anniversaries (which I never use because I'm a Yorkshireman and Hallmark aint getting any cash out of me).

My own experience with WM5torage tells me that all plugins will have problem when you use WM5torage. You have to temporarily disable all plugins before using it. So don't give up on Calendar+ if you like it.

I am using TodayAgenda which I prefer over Calendar+

Software recommended for purchase?

Does anyone have any software which they've purchased for their Universal that they'd recommend? If so, why?
Pocket informant. Its the only PIM worth having, and it turns the useless PIM functionality built into PPCs into something that runs my life. Wouldn't be without it
If had had to narrow it down to one app, it'd have to be PocketBreeze by SBSH.net
Integrates with the aforementioned PocketInformant, but even if you haven't got PI, then PocketBreeze transforms your today screen into a far more usable beast. It's about a million times better than SPB's rip-off clone, and has far more functionality and configuration options. Plus it's regularly updated for bug-fixes and extra functions - and that is something that a lot of other software houses could learn from.
Oh, and the SBSH support forums are outstanding.
For me it's Resco File Explorer, SPB Pocket Plus and SPB Weather tweaked to pick information from BBC and not weather.com
If you use Lotus Notes, CommonTime's mNotes is pretty cool =) But then I would say that, since I work for CommonTime.
Pocketbreeze everytime.
Iliumsoft Listpro. By FAR the most handy app for personal management of lists.
http://www.iliumsoft.com/site/lp/listpro.htm
Very customisable
Microsoft Voice Command
Pocket Informant
SPB Pocket Plus
SPB Diary
SK Tools
Soti Pocket Controller
Sprite Backup
Aol Messenger
PpcWebCam
Some freeware/Shareware
Cambridge VxUtils
Total Commander
PH Registry Editor
TCPMP Media Player
GSPlayer Media Player
Insignia Solutions Jeode Runtime
Agile Messenger (need better wm5 support tho)

Killer App
I agree with many of the recomendations above and mention was made of SKTools (eagle 1), which I have yet to try, but the killer application for me is SKscheMa which can automate all sorts of daily tasks including turning on and off WiFi, BT and GSM at specific or regular times.
It has a powerful scripting language which has allowed me to create a macro to insert my meeting text, title, place, date and time, who attended etc. It can simulate taps and tap and hold as well. Support is very fast and efficient.
I have even used it to turn on the Bluetooth at regular intervals until we get a fix for that bug.
Strongly advise you check this one out.

Don't be put off by the simple web site - this product "rocks".
This product os brilliant - sync email calendar with your pc wirelessly (GPRS/3G/WIFI) push email too so you don't have to sync manually...
http://www.intellisync.com/pages/Products/Express/Benefits/
Free trial - only snag is your pc (or at least a pc theat you can access your mail from) needs to be always on. WOrks with outlook/lotus notes etc
And I don't work for them!
Common time is also good for Notes but I couldn't work out how to sync wirelessly.

You know you get free support with your 30 day free trial, right? ;-) Give them a call and they can get it all up & running for you. Something to do with locations and preferred order, if memory serves. But then it should run when cradled, when in WiFi range (if you have WiFi) and over GPRS if you have your firewall opened properly. Of course GPRS may be an issue if you're on a corporate network - there was talk about a solution to get round that about 18 months ago, but I think the company's sales focus has shifted towards corporates (Notes is used a LOT by corporates in the US) so features for individual users are on the back burner for now.
I did try to get in touch with them but they didn't seem very interested - I did actually buy it as it was the best option for cradle based syncing - Do you know of anyone specific I can talk to?
Pocketzenphone for me is the most important. Easily change between phone profiles e.g. Loud / meeting /flight etc.
Can be set to do this at specific times e.g. Go to silent at 23:30 and back to normal at 8:00. Also integrates with outlook - e.g can put it into meeting mode when your calender shows meetings or for me puts the device into flight mode when I have flights marked in the calender.
cheers
Haven't purchased yet, but will do so shortly: a backup app. My choice is SPB Backup, but Sprite or Sunnysoft's should do just fine. The reason for buying one should be fairly obvious

Your best bet is probably to pick up the phone when you're at your PC/PDA. I think the support number is on the site under Information/Contact details. Scroll down to after the list of links at the top.
If you called them before and can remember the name of who you spoke to, I'll go upstairs & give them a clip round the earhole In general we get a good response about our support!

The default weather source is weather.com which I have found to be pretty useless. However, if you go to here;
www.pdagold.com/themes/details.asp?t=12007
you can pick up forecasts for Spb Weather from the BBC. Follow the Readme.txt and it's pretty straight forward. The forecast is so much more accurate than weather.com (in my opinion)

Does SPB Weather also shows NOWs weather? I installed it and didn't see that option, and not that many other options at all.
I purchased and used Weather Panel on my previous PDA2K and that program proved to be super accurate.. actually it showed the weather condition in my city relevant to the minute... e.g. Changed to 'FOG' icon and FOG began.. Changed to Raining now.. and rain just started an hour before..
I didn't see these features in SPB weather.. maybe i missed them though...
Sounds like you've found a way to CONTROL the weather - [/quote]Changed to 'FOG' icon and FOG began..
!!
Anyway - all SPB does is pick up a forecast from wherever you tell it to. In my case I just use the BBC's site.

I've bought Voice Command and photo contacts pro, both I really like.
Freeware that surpasses all others to me is:
Qmail3, ugly as sin but so much better than the built in email client.
Will Check over an activesync connection, very useful at work, and one button handles multiple account checking. Glorious!
Does RSS and NNTP as well.

Lots of info on it here.

Will buy Opera when that goes commercial.

Better Calendar Display

I love being able to access my calendar on my phone. However, it seems like I just get small chunks at a time with the built in calendar app. When I zoom out to see my whole week for example, I only see blue lines. I don't see exactly what the appointment is.
I know that is in no small way due to the limited size of the screen but I am looking for a more effective way to display my calendar.
I am currently trying pocket informant and it gets me closer to what I want. However, it has a couple screwy issues such as the bottom arrow of the scroll bar not being displayed etc.
So, what do you guys use? Or, are you happy with the built in calendar app?
Is there another forum that would be better for me to post this question? It's not directly related to the 8525 after all.
I'm using Pocket Breeze and very satisfied with it.
i use today agenda, its a killer app with many different customizations.. Dr. P got me hooked on this app!
http://tiews.info/index.php?show=software/todayagenda
I use SPB Diary, perfect today plugin that completely replaces the agenda. It's also the only today plugin I use or need.
I use SBSH.net PocketBreeze. I beta tested SPB Diary 2.0 and even tried the final version but wanted more control over customizing so I stuck by PocketBreeze. Still SPB Diary is also a fine product. You can't go wrong with either IMO. If you want to see your appointments in Calendar though I think you have to use one of those Power PIM apps [Agenda Fusion, etc etc] personally I find them overkill for my needs I stay with the default PIM and PocketBreeze.
I like pocketbreeze for the today screen display of the calendar. It's just when I go into the calendar app itself that I'm thinking there should be something better.
I'll check out your ideas. Anyone else?
I like the FREE Calendar+
http://www.mohairsofa.com/Default.aspx/document/10
Not a replacement for the MS Calendar, but rather a Today plugin.
I think it looks very similar to "View as Agenda" on blackberry.
also try out pocket informant alot of PB users also use that app.
Another vote for TodayAgenda. Excellent app. Free, small and highly configurable.
I've been using Pocket Breeze and Pocket Informant together since I had my old Orange M2000 and it works very well for me.

Best RSS News feed??

Never really bothered with RSS untill I bought my missus a new phone this christmas and it had RSS built into it and I find it quite good.
I see that there are absolutely s**t loads of RSS feed programs for PPC.
Just want some views on which are the good and which are the bad.
Cheers

Try:
a. NewsReader ($$)
b. Egress ($$ probably)
c. SPB Insight ($$)
d. pRSSReader (Freeware)
e. PocketRSS (Freeware?)
f. Hubdog (?? donno much about this one)
I personally use pRSSReader (due to it's decent today screen plugin, scrolls new items like a ticker on the today screen) but thinking about trying out PocketRSS ..

pRSSReader get my vote. I like the today plugin and it's still free.
Hi,
I tried pRSSReader, too. Nice program but I had a little problem on my VPA compact III:
The Windows Mobile bootscreen disappeared after the installation of pRSSReader. Now the screens turns to white until the Today screen is loaded. Does anyone else have this problem?
Mark.
Update: Sorry, it is a know issue:
Known Issues
When migrating from 1.2.0 version of pRSSreader, you have uninstall the previous one. This is because of the name change in the instalation file. This change has to be made to allow pRSSreader install on Asian (Chinese, Japanese, Korean) versions of Pocket PC.
On some devices, pRSSreader may cause that the boot screen of a device will be completely white. It is a problem of pRSSreader and will be fixed in 1.3.3.
pRSSReader looks pretty good so far, cheers peeps.
Shame about the white boot screen bug, but its a minor issue. Will be sorted on next release.

It might be the best .. I think it was voted the winner on 2006 PocketPCMag awards too .... but the biggest problem is the today screen plugin .. Only pRSSReader or PocketRSS has decent today screen plugins and both of them can be used as plugins for PB tabs on the today screen .. and only pRSSReader has a plugin that shows new items as a ticker on the today screen ..

I could see how that might be a problem for those who want to read news on their Today screen. I don't. I'm very happy with the ways NewsBreak's Today plug-in only shows the number of new items and them I launch NewsBreak reader right from there. I'm very carefully select what's on my Today screen - most of it is taken by SPB Diary.

NewsCopier
MaximumSoft NewsCopier is a freeware RSS reader. Features include:
* hiding of read articles,
* Cleartype support,
* allows feeds to be stored on your memory card,
* support for a wide variety of RSS-feed formats: RSS 1.0 (including RSS 0.9, 0.91, 0.92), RSS 2.0 and Atom
* Automatic (periodic) updates of feeds
The basic user-interface is quite similar to Illium's NewsBreak, but it lacks advanced features like alerting on keywords and loggin into protected feeds.
Meh. I prefer Google Reader Mobile. You can use the full UI on a computer and manage feeds from there. On the mobile it is just a stripped down version of your feeds.

Egress has a today plugin with ticker as well
I also like pRSSreader, which I've been using for a few weeks (and I tried several before settling on this one).
But there is one annoying feature. It's a pain in the ass to add new feeds. You can't just add the URL of the actual blog, you have to add the URL of the feed - which is easier said than done in some cases. Unless I'm missing something?
An alternative to any Pocket PC reader is simply to use PIE and access Bloglines (www.bloglines.com) which renders beautifully on a Vario II and includes all of the your usual Bloglines feeds.
how do I install prssr.....everytime I download the zip cab the installation fails...my 8525 trys to open the zip cab file with the proprietary htc zip program preinstalled on the machine.
I use pRSSreader... it's great, i love the cycling stories that allows u to tap it to go right to that story instead of sifting through all of them.
I'm a BIG RSS guy. I love my RSS over 400 Feeds. It's my only way to get information since i'm either always working or traveling.
I've used the following and here is my opinion
SPB Insight:
Love this one. Only 2 problems. (1) no video support (yet, i was reading that next version should have it) (2) can get slow sometimes. the version fixed a lot of this but i guess they never accounted for 400 RSS Feeds.
The new v2 today plugin is nice and with the recent update there are several options. you can also click http links in the feeds (NICE FEATURE)
pRSS:
This one for being free is nice but not my favorite by far. I have to say the ticker is nice but limited options. I also think the setup of adding and removing feeds it not the best in the world but it allows you to read and it is pretty quick if you are not reading from a SD card
Hubdog:
THis one has many things i love and hate. I love the fact you can do videos, pictures, links, etc. however that all comes with a price. Hubdog is SLOW, and i mean SLOW. it crashes like you would believe it. And one time in on of the earlier version it caused my SD to stop being see by the OS. (a soft reset fixed that) I think the best thing i love about hubdog that i wish others would do if that you can go to hubdog.com and setup your RSS feeds there and then when you login to your hubdog account form you mobile all of you RSS feeds are all setup. This is not my favorite RSS Reader but of the free ones i did like this one the best, despite the crashes.
Newsbreak is my next RSS Reader to hit up. I downloaded the trial and i am excited to see what it can do for me. Important things for me is the UI, plays video/audio for podcast and has a today plugin.
I hope this helps and i'll update when i play with Newsbreak.
Spb Insight also has a Today Screen plug-in with scrolling headlines (and photos) also has a few other features, like some sites you can choose to download full text, photos and all. For myself though, I found the Today screen text and photo crawl to be annoying.
Newsbreak, which I'm testing now also does nicely with playing audio blogs.
IMO PocketRSS is superior, and FREE!!

A good today plugin for calendar???

Hi guys...
I'm looking for a good today plugin for use in the TyTN in order to see calendar and task events... like Pocket Breezer or SPB Diary.
The thing here is that I would like to know if have had some experience with this apps in the TyTN; I really wont want to have problems with the stability/operation of the device.
In My old WM2003SE the Pocket Breeze was just perfect, but when I first try it on the TyTN I had some issues...
I just would like to know, in your experience...wich app would you recomend for have a good view of the calendar in the today screen.
Thanks in advace for sharing!!
Try Today Agenda - free & works well.
What issues did you have with Pocket Breeze? Have you tried the latest 5.2 version? You could post a question on the SBSH forum, they can usually resolve problems with you.
I have Breeze on my T-Mobile MDA Vario II and it works flawlessly.
I have use the V 5.001 trial version (cause I wanted to check if worked before buying it)... The main problem was that TyTN crashed too many times and i need to soft reset a lot; even after a soft reset sometimes still doesn work and had to aply a new soft reset.
I will give a try to the latest version as you said and also will use it without any other today plugin...I use to have Spb weather, skype, and the lock device in my today screen.
thanks for the comments...!!
any one else with another app that can try...??
thanks
I use spb Diary and really like it. As you have spb weather, you can integrate that into the diary as an additional feature too.
As baxter says try today agenda a very good plugin and its free. Many have even switched from PB to this.
see here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=270288
I'm using the pack of sbsh apps, pocketbreeze, pocketweather, ilauncher, and contactbreeze on my 8525 without issue...
http://www.mobilitysite.com/forums/vbgarage.php?do=view&id=13843
As for me I would advice SPB Diary. It works stable on my HTC TyTN for 3 months. I also apreciated its "completeness" - it presents almost all PIM information in one place - calendar, tasks, e-mails, contacts.
Re stability - I understand it often depends on the app collection you install. The more install - the less stable system become , of cause it;s always possible to try different combintaions and find a good balance, but...
Good luck in search and try!
p.s. I also tried Pocket Breeze + Contacts and found these combination working a bit slower and giving me less features than SPB Pocket Plus + SPB Diary, IMHO.
I am also a fan of today agenda
I am using Pocket Breeze, iLauncher and Pocket Weather all together on a Tytn....works perfectly.
Be sure to install in system memory, not the storage card.
I have found the TyTn will occassionally freeze when these were installed on the storage card. Since moving to main memory I have been very stable.

as a rule of thumb, anything that access's the today screen or is constantly in use should be installed to the main memory and not the card.. some will work just fine installed to the card, but if you find you are having issues with it then you might want to move it to the phone

I think this was the problem; the trial period I used pocket breezer and SPB Diary I installed them in Storage card... so, now I will install in main memory; as some members have said, both app works just fine without problems so, now the point is just decide the one that looks better and gives the more info..
Also will give a try to the Today Agenda... always nice try the free ones.. ;-)

i must be dumb, cause i couldn't find anything about this in any of the Ultimatelaunch threads. i just started using UL yesterday and i want to use a combined tab for 3 today plugins. HTC Home, Tasks, Calendar. unfortunatly, tasks and calendar DO NOT appear in the Today Plugin menu in UL.. so instead i'm using SPB Diary.
does anyone have any idea how to add them?
thank you very much.
your right, UL cant display some of the build in original windows plugins, Daniel wrote me that they are completly different coded or something.

yep... same limitation for throttlelauncher. Only DLL based plugins have the possibility to be embeded inside other today plugin. You can check HKLM\software\Microsoft\Today\Items\*****\ (where ***** is the plugin name) for the key DLL. If it exists, the plugin can be embeded... If not... search for an alternative .
