Universal corrupted my 4G SD card? - JASJAR, XDA Exec, MDA Pro General

I have used a 150x 4G A-Data SD card for a couple of months without problems.
Today my Universal (MDA PRO) asked me:
"Do you want to try to format this storage card to make it readable? This will permanently delete any files on the card."
And the symptom was that Universal did not see the card at all. Then I put the card into the external reader of the PC and Windows XP asked me:
"The disk in drive X is not formatted.
Do you want to format it now?"
Is there any chance to regain the content of the card?
Thanks for any help.

try this

Thanks, but do you think it can help even if the card was not partitioned for 2GB?

Had the same problem with a 4GB-card. I read, that the original SD-card-standard was made for up to 2GB cards. All cards with 4GB sold as non-SDHC-cards are not standards-compliant because some addressing of the memory blocks was not made for such sizes. Although it works under some circumstances, it doesn't mostly. (see here.)
So, you might want to get 2x 2GB-cards since the reader of the Universal does not yet support SDHC-protocol.
Cheers,
-mARKUS

Also got the transcend 4gb card. Admittedly I have 2.7GB used up for music - but I do not have any issues at all with my universal!!
Perhaps thats the solution make sure you fill over 2GB.
Matt

so is the XDA compatible with sd-hc cards or not? I'm looking at getting one of these

but don't want to if it's not going to work properly.

The Universal (or variants of) is not compatible with sdhc cards - most non-sdhc 4gb cards do work though (mine is an ebay cheapy and works perfectly!)

Thanks Speeed. Do you know if that is a Class 2 SDHC. I remember reading some post here which said a SDHC 2.0 format might not be compatible with HTC Prophet.
is SDHC working in a prophet?
Hey Umesh, I do have exactly the same question. I already have a 1 GB SD card. But now I need to upgrade and I am wondering if I can buy a SDHC class 2 or even SDHC class 6 card. Can you please post your experiences.

I have the Transcend 150x 4gb SD working in my Prophet for almost a year. The only issue is one that applies to all SD cards and not just the 4gb, that is today plugins sometimes don't like to be on the SD card, otherwise everything works perfectly. It seems to me I remember at the time I bought my 4gb SD card there were some models that had issues with the Prophet. I guess you could just get one of the cards that has already been proven to be compatible.

I have a Topram 4Gb 150x sd card and have had no problems. I got it from Ebay.
please note it uses SD 1.1, which is the maximum the Prophet supports.

Hi,
I have a samsung oem 4go 150x, bought on ebay from fastmemoryman, and it is also working perfectly on my prophet.
Topram and Soho failed. Still looking for a good 4GB card!
Hello guys,
Here's my experience with 4GB SD card dilemma using a Qtek s200:
1) Topram 150X:
*Works ok till 2GB but data written beyond 2GB can not read back.
*Surprisingly there's no error after chkdsk, xp-scan.
*No error when writing beyond 2GB but data is not really written.
*Original content of the sectors do not change at all.
*Deep analysis under WinHex states defect starting at sector #3964927 of about 8 million sectors.
* FAT16 and FAT32 all formatting combinations possible on Qtek as well as XP which is surprising. No error using Panasonic SD Formatter as well. This card doest not react to any write operation, even if it fails !!!
SOLUTION: Created a 2GB partition using WM5torage + XP and bypass defected area.
2) SOHO 150X:
*Looks horrible with 5th class sticker misaligned.
*Comes with 90MB of defected sectors already marked bad in FAT.
*Healty reformatting impossible.
*All sectors beyond 1GB are unreadable & unwritable.
SOLUTION: Sent it back to the seller.
QUESTION TO ALL POSTS CLAIMING TRANSCEND & A-DATA WORKS WITH NO PROBLEM:
Of course the 4GB SD's are recognized well when insterted in Prophet. But did you go beyond 2GB and up to 4GB? I strongly need someone who would confirm having written full 4GB and able to read it back with no data loss !!!
I think just inserting the card and seeing 3800MB something free means NOTHING and you should load the card completely without no data loss to be sure everything is OK.
Many posts claim problem with camera not saving to card. No sense anymore, it's not related to the cards but the cam.app as the free space calculation issue is well known now.
Waiting for some good news about Trancend and A-Data which i want to try asap...
SHHC not compatible with Prophet
Not yet tried but given all the information on various sources, Prophet has no chance to recognize any SDHC card. When inserted we will probably won't see anything. Like a RAW card.
The most logical explanation is that the CSD layer of SD2.0 is organized diffently than SD1.1.
Didn't see yet any opportunity to use them with a future ROM update. The hardware limitations of the reader on prophet may be the cause.

Friend. I have been using the Transcend 4gb 150X with my prophet for almost a year and let me tell you that baby is full!!! I have my GPS maps, a few videos, some big apps, and the rest filled with as much music as I can cram into the thing. It works without any problems at all, I also specify images to be saved directly to the card with no problems. I am not the only one that has reported compatibility with the Transcend.

I'm using 4go SD card for more than a month... it is almost full and no problem with any kind of data...
So, it work perfectly.
For those than can't save photos on SD card, this has nothing to do with the SD card format. It depends on if you've unlocked Ext rom or not. It depends also of the rom you've installed on your prophet, some home cooked rom than have native unlocked ext rom will show the same issue.
4GB SD cards on Prophet
Thanks matterhorn for making it more precise. It's very nice to hear such clear feedback.
...and Cedric, are you also talking'bout a Transcend?
I guess you both use your cards on the PC using regular card readers. 2GB and FAT32 compatibility should be enough o cope with 4GB. If the card is healty, i see no reason why a recent, non-SDHC reader would not work with 4GB SD.
I also guess you didn't have any problem using full capacity after re-formatting. Reformatting should not be a problem for a good 4GB card to become bad.
I think i'll give another try with Transcend which is a reliable company and registered to sdcard.org while SOHO and TOPRAM are not. In my language, we call them MANUFACTURERS WORKING UNDER THE STAIRS.

I use an normal SD card reader to format my card in FAT32 using XP every time I change my ROM, just to make sure there are no hidden nasties to cause problems. Newegg.com has good prices on the Transcend .
Also that tip about the unlocked extended ROM is a good one. When you can have 4gb, who cares about a few megabytes.
So can I assume to confirm the usability of a 4 GB card on my Neo -
If I slide in the 4 GB Card and it shows full memory (4 GB) as available in Memory Status --> Storage Card - that would imply that the full card is (read/write) compatible in the device?
Matterhorn, is your working 4 GB card SDHC 2.0 format ?
Practically, at best I would have only about a couple of minutes to test the 4 GB card at the store where I buy.

MDA Vario /Qtek 9100 and 4GB?

Anybody know if This PDA can support 4GB miniSD?
Thanks.
The Wizard is miniSD compatible. miniSD is derived of the SD specification that support up to 2GB memory cards. 4GB cards are SDHC compatible derived of the SDHC specification. For this reason 4GB memory cards are not compatible with the wizard neither with TyTN. I don't know any 4GB miniSD card from any fame manufacturer.

Hello EgemenBor,
Not 4GB SD but 4GB miniSD card on a MDA Vario (or Wizard, Qtek 9100, Imate K-Jam), right?
Thanks
Nope, but maybe a generic product works, look this link:
http://www.mobymemory.com/proddetail.asp?prod=miniSD_4096mb_MOBY_002
I don't trust on non branded products then I can not respond your question. but is important to know that neighter fame manufacturer has 4GB miniSD cards for sale (ex. SanDisk, Kingston, etc).
From that SanDisk article:
2. Look for SDHC logo on card and packaging itself
a. GB SD cards without SDHC logo are non-compliant with the SDA 2.00
specification.

Notice, they say "non-compliant" and NOT "non-existent." They are obviously cow-towing to device manufacturers here, plus expecting us to foot the bill!
The problems I've heard of with these cards are:
1.) They don't last as long. (Neither did 3.5" Low-Density Floppy Disks when formatted as High-Density, but I've still got a few originals hanging around that work....) It would be great to know what proccess they were using to create these drives as opposed to the 2GB ones....
2.) The card may need to be repartitioned into 2-2GB drives. (See this thread)
please remember that just because it doesn't meet the new standard, doesn't mean it doesn't work with the older standard-devices
I, for one, am grateful there are vendors serving this sub-market, even though the major players are moving on!
Thanks Blazoner.
Anybody have a miniSD 4GB card on a Wizard, that works well?

I have 2 mobymemory cards 2gb and 1 gb both work v well - if mobymemory say this 4gb card will work i trust them - i will most likely get one!
I have said all along that i think a 4gb mini-sd card will work in the wizard as a 4gb sd card works in a prophet and they really have v similar roms. 4gb even works in a magician and that has an even older rom.
I base myself on what SanDisk says in this link in red:
http://www.sandisk.com/Compatibility/Device(8040)-T-Mobile-MDA_Vario.aspx
T-Mobile MDA Vario
(Mobile Phones)
Maximum capacity for this device: May support up to 2GB
Please check with your device manufacturer for details.
Also, SanDisk doesn't manufacture 4GB minisd cards. I have learned to pay attention to what SanDisk says
It would be necessary to check if to use more than 2gb works ok with the Wizard with this 4gb minisd card. Unfortunately I am in America and I don't have access to mobymemory devices.

How long did it work ok? try formatting it on the device using sktools or storage tools
Take a look at this thread. It describes this problem and it's solutions in detail. Just read miniSD instead of SD.
Remember, it can still be compatible with the current standard, even if it doesn't comply with the new standard.

Hi,

Is a new SDHC and even my laptop with a pcmcia reader card (old) don't recognize too! But I think card is OK because with my Sanyo Xacti C6 work well!
What can I do? Can I make 2x 2GB partitions FAT 16... maybe Wizard work?
Thanks
well my phone isn't reading the memory card and when I try to access it via a card reader on my pc nothing happens...just gets stuck..could it be that the card is dead?
I've had the problem for the past week or so...the card in general was really slow I.e. uplaoding files and accessing the card on my pc would take a while..
I try format miniSDHC 4GB card with 2 partitions 2GB FAT16 but Wizard don't recognize it! Even my old pcmcia card reader can't "see" it! At laptop only work with a card reader that works with SDHC!
Any Help?
Thanks
By this experience, I think Wizard can't read any miniSDHC card unless HTC make a firmware update (will do sometime?) to support this new standard SDHC!
Anybody have better good news?
But, I can't understand why Qtek 9000 and S200 can read SD 4GB, like some persons report it!!!
Thanks

4GB SD card in XDA exec

Hi there. Bought 4GB Kingston Elite Pro SD card. Formatted FAT32, and 3.0GB of files on it. XDA exec will neither read, nor format it. (NB, works perfectly with identical card, but in 2GB capacity. Card is standard SD, not SDHC.
Any thoughts
Thanks
I have a 4gb card aswell for my spv 5000 and it won't read it. it only sees 1.71gb of it but won't format it
I recall that this has been dealt with on the Uni-Accessories area. Have a search there. 4Gb cards definitely work. Maybe it has to be FAT not FAT32?
Also wondering if you flashed with the SD card inserted? I think this will consider the SD card as part of the ROM and basically uses some of the card (although what for I don't know).
Mine is FAT32 (4GB Transcend 150x) works fine.
Have you tried the card in a card reader? What are the results there?

No, haven't flashed ROM for many months.
Card shows up fine when inserted into the reader slot on my Dell Inspiron 9400. I can open files on it, and copy files to it, but when put in XDA EXEC, always get 'Would you like to format this disc to make it readable?', and if you click yes, the XDA EXEC freezes.
Hello All
I too hav a Orange SPV m5000 and im using a PQI 4GB Sd card.
Its working fie here.
Formated: FAT32
I guess its a kompatibility thing?
@kennethsross... have you ever been able to read the card from the phone?
I know there are lots of problems with imitation cards on the market that aren't quite as reliable and fast as they're supposed to be. It's worth buying one of the more expensive ones just to avoid this problem (not saying this is the problem, just bit of info).
It does seem strange that it reads fine out of the unit though... maybe like SPVlover says, it could simply be a little compatibility issue (which would be annoying as hell!).
Just wondering what your OS version is? Maybe it's a slightly corrupt install? That's clutching at straws I know...
Might be worth checking the following settings in your registry...
hklm\drivers\sdcard\clientdrivers\class\mmc_class
hklm\drivers\sdcard\clientdrivers\class\SDMemory_c lass
The value in each should be set at 64 as standard unless you've tweaked it. Just wondering if those values are present at all? If not, it sounds like a corrupt driver install.

Looking more and more like this is a counterfeit card. Wondering if it is an SD-HC after all - Kingston claim they do not make 4GB standard SD cards.
I guess that would explain why my laptop can read it (SD-HC capable), but the XDA-EXEC can't.
Thanks again for all your advice on this. Maybe shouldn't have bought on eBay!!!

I had a 4Gb card from Moby Memory- it randomly corrupted data. I couldn't work out if it was the OS, the handset or the card causing problems, but assumed it was the card. They refunded me no problems.

The Trinity does seem to be a bit fussy with spotting cards when you insert them (well mine does!)

SD/SDHC Memory Card Unlocker.
I really need a 4GB or more sd card.
I have searched and searched for a solution but there seems to be no clear answer. It would seem that some Trinity users are able to use 4gb and 8gb micro cards with adaptors, but others end up with problems after soft resets, such as the device no longer seeing the sd card, or files becoming corrupted.
SO.... I ask you all:
- Can the Trinity reliably use a 4gb micro card with adaptor?
- Is there a fix or download that actually works to achieve the above?
- If not, is there such a thing as a 4GB mini sd card (not sdhc or micro)?
I have tried using a 4gb micro card with adaptor and after soft resetting my Trinity either fails to see it or the sd card became corrupted. I have read many similar stories and experiences. However, My Tomtom maps are nearly 2gb, so I need a 4gb card at least!!!
I see other xda members using 4gb and 8 gb cards. Please, HOW are they achieving this?
Thanks,
Mattster.
hi Mattster,
best way I can hopefully help to answer your questions is:
1. I have used cheap Sandisk 4 gig micro sd's with adaptor in a few Trinity's with no problems at all.
2. there are 4 gig min Sd's out there - see ebay item 260468007473
3. disregarding that cards usually come ready formatted, I always format myself before use anyway.
I have used the Panasonic Formatter (ver 2.0.03) for some time and it works for me.

Hi Carkev.
Thanks for the advice.
I have looked at the 4GB mini sd. It's from Hong Kong and he has sold "4" to date, so I may wait a little before getting one.
Some Trinity's seem to accept 4GB micro's with adaptor, some don't. The search for the reason or solution has tired me out, so I'm sticking with my 2GB for now. I only needed it for my European Tomtom maps (2GB!) so I'll just stick with UK and Ireland.
Thanks for your reply,
Mattster.

Sandisk 8gb microsdhc not readable?

so im excited to get a 8gb card for my kaiser,so i pop it in and reset...goto memory>storage card NOTHING!pop it out put it in my pc and invalid process!!!WTF?!?!?!help please
Have you tried to format the card from your PC. If that doesn't work you might have a bad card. Sucks but it does happen sometimes.
Also, please remember that these portable handsets are usually not NTFS file format compatible. Be sure when you are formatting that the card is in FAT or FAT32 mode, with default block sizes and allocation.
Also, it does sound to me that your card is defective. I have never had to "format" any flash cards I have ever bought before using them, except a couple old CF cards for my SLR camera.
I got a sandisk 8gb microsdhc myself - and it works great...
(except when one morning I wake up and find out that all the data's gone, and had to recover it with GetDataBack)
I'm no SDHC expert (I've only had 1 for 2 weeks) but I ran into some problems myself...
1) If you're running Win XP on your desktop, you'll need to download the hotfix for SDHC support here (I don't use Vista so I'm not sure if it supports SDHC natively)
2) The card reader I have connected to my PC wouldn't read SDHC cards but the USB reader that came with my SanDisk 8GB MicroSDHC card does work. Make sure the adapter you're using to connect to the PC supports SDHC.
3) Sounds stupid but make sure you're pushing the card all the way into your phone. You should feel some spring pressure and then hear a 'click' as it locks into place. You push it in and it springs out to remove it. I have pretty big fingers and I didn't insert mine all the way the first time. I still have to use something small (the back end of the stylus) to fully insert my SDHC card.

You may have a faulty card

thanx for the help guys but i think i have a bad card...
sorry if you've got a bad card . i scored mine (8gb - sandisk microsdhc) off ebay for $45.00. works flawlessly!
I have just copied all of the contents of my 4gb card onto a new 8gb card, no problems so far, but when I put it back into my Kaiser, the volume only shows as a 4 gb, with 1 gb free, which are he details of the old card, any help greatly appreciated
thanks
