Hi All,
I was just looking to by the new netgear skype phone and then I thought maybe the Atom Life might run skype well because of the faster processor!!!!! Has anyone tried skype on the Atom Life???
I have tried skype on most of my phones from Jasjar, Jasjam, Atom and others and it was never a nice experience, please anyone let me know of your thoughts?
skype
Im using skype 2.3 on my HP RW6818 with a spectec minisd wifi, and everything is working perfectly. Though you need to set the AGC to 3, Skype echo cancellation on and the volume to 30% in order for it to work, i wouldnt recommend using the headset as it may do damage on your phone.
Now you just need to put the phone upside down, so the speakerphone becomes the earpiece, and have a normal phone type conversation. Dont worry about the mic, it will still function normally eventhough its on top.
I tried using the Skype for Windows Mobile version on Atom Life. Seemed to work fine for text. The voice call worked fine for about 15 mins but by then the device became very hot and it switched off. It wouldn't come on until it after some time when it cooled a bit
I have no plans of using the voice comms again.

Ok Guys, can I install skype to ny Uni without it completely aborting, sucking all sytem mem and failing to install ballsing up my gadget totally?
is anyone on the latest V of it and cares to share their experiences? . . sure there are a few ppl wanting to use it but are chicken lickin like me!
lr
I've used it, works fine (with wifi). I use the hands free corded set I got with the xda exec. I didn't want to use bluetooth headset as this zaps more resources from the exec. One odd thing, is that the first time you dial someone after loading it, there is no sound. So you dial, let it ring for a second. disconnect and then dial again. Everything then works ok. I have had a number of wm2003 and wm5 devices and Skype never works flawlessly, there is always some hickup. The call quality does seem to be quite good on the exec.
I have seen people talking about this in other places and was wondering if anyone knows what to do to get skype to work both ways in an O2-Atom.
I can hear the other side, but they hear me broken up or not at all...
*sob* I only bought the atom because of the built in WiFi so I can skype at home without sitting at the computer...
Know this disappointing. I had the same problem with an i-mate JAM aka HTC Magician aka MDA Vario etc. Has the same 416MHz CPU as the Atom. I tried Skype using a high quality, fast Wi-Fi card. Same issues. Incoming sound fine, outgoing garbled. I asked around on the Skype forum and it seems the stated Skype system requirements are optimistic. Seems users with straight non-phone Pocket PCs can Skype at around 400MHz. but phone edition devices can only do it if overclocked to at least 545MHz. Persoanally, I am very reluctant to overclock due to heat and battery life issies. So sorry to be the bearer of bad news. I would love to hear if you can find an alternate VOIP client than can deliver for you.
Oops, sorry. I double posted by mistake.... :?
Even i face the same problem .....it seems that there is a universal defect for atom. please anybody else reading this suggest anything to improve it.
Thank you in advance.
Nice to see this new Sable forum and hope it grows with time.
Has anyone achieved VC 1.6 initiation from their Bluetooth earpiece?
I can't. Running WM5 5.1.195 on HP 6915, and guess that is the problem.
No ROM update as far as I'm aware, but please correct me!
Am I flogging a dead horse trying to find a fix?
Alternatively, has anyone got VC 1.5 running properly with the reg hacks? It worked just fine on my old Universal.
$9.99 to downgrade....not such a great deal in my book! Could someone look to see if I have "idiot" written on my forehead?
I have a hw6955 and version voice command 1.6 and I've tried the hack (which starts vc1.6 when the headset button is pushed) that's been used on other wm5 devices and it doesn't work.
Voice command 1.6 is great and I still use it, I've assigned the side button to start vc 1.6.
Trouble is, the device turns off after a few minutes anyways and it seems to lose connection to my BT headset. You have to turn the device on and then press the side button to start vc. If a call comes in, I have to press the button on the headset to reconnect to the device anyways. Not sure if this is normal, because hardly anyone has sables.
Could pressing the button on a headset, turn the device back on and start voice command? That would be awesome. Anyways, the 6955 is a great device, just needs a few more people hacking for it.
1500 and 3000ma batteries for out for it, the 300 gives 4 days of use, which is amazing. The 1500 provides 25% more power then the OEM battery and is the same form factor (and weight).
I don't have the cut-off problem at all.
In the hands-free setting (Bluetooth Manager/Handsfree Connection/HandsFree Settings) I've ticked the box for Standard Audio as well as Telephone Calls - perhaps that makes a difference. Mine (Moto) stays on and I also get all my TomTom instructions through it. Voice recognition through the BT headset is pretty poor though.
Where did you get your batts? I've got the 2500 from eBay - larger size with back cover that is a different colour to the PDA and not a terribly good fit. £15 from Hong Kong - but I can live with that! Found a nice case from US that takes the larger battery.
I have a logitech one, I'm not sure if it's all the great. I may try a moto one. If I turn on both telephone and all sounds in the bluetooth menu, then I find that there is a lot of background static on the headset. People have mentioned that it sounds like I am standing by a jet taking off! Anyways, I think it's the implementation of bluetooth on the hp models and not the headset, but until I try another one, then I don't know.
Have you read the thread here about activating voice dial with the headset button? It's really good.
any more information on this? BTW, all 6940/45/50/55 ipaq users should be using microsoft voice command 1.6. It works amazing for voice dialing. No training, it just works.
If someone could get the bluetooth headset button to initiate the voice command software on the ipaq, that would be ideal.
A lot of smartphone, pda users are attempting to get voice dialing working with bluetooth headsets. There are various posts on here about it.
Obviously, there isn't a huge following for the 6900 series... That is not good.
Battery life would be the most obvious reason!
I have MS Voice Command 1.6 UK Version running fine on my PDA (fair enoughitsan Orbit / Artemis / P3300) but everythingworks fine, announcing calls /messages / BT headset button / voice dailling the lot.
Hi
Simple Question I think,
I have a Wizard running very well at 286Mhz on WM6
I have the option to Upgrade to a Tytn/Hermes.
I Love to mess about with my phone.
Should I upgrade to the Hermes?
Other than the obvios 3G and Video Call is it a lot faster/better than a well sorted Wizard?
Thanks for your time
Jules
I've noticed a huge increase in speed when multitasking. While driving around and using GPS, for example, Voice Command and call answering speed have greatly increased (my Wizard was o/c'ed to 240).
I was running tomtom6 the other day while listening to an audio book and the phone rang...something like this might mean a dropped call with my Wizard, but I didn't have any issues with the 8525.
The one downside that I've found is that the 8525 (not sure if all Hermes are set up this way) can't have a data connection while the phone is in use.

Yes you can, you just have to be a on 3g network. I do this all the time with my 8525.

I'm almost always in a 3G area when this happens.
Here's an example of my experience;
When I first got my TyTN I connected to my desktop via USB and enabled the modem connection. I then disabled my LAN connection and started playing Counter Strike Source. I was able to play jsu fine with a ping around 60. I then called my friend (while I was still playing) to tell him about this. My ping went to 100 and it was still very playable and there was no skipping. In fact my score was about 10-3 while doing this =)
So in short, data and voice works at the same time quite well. It also works on the device as I get e-mails on a regular basis while eon a phone call.
Later, Lew
ZaJules - you are looking at it from a wrong approach. Since you have been playing with unofficial release of WM6 and overclocked your device, it looks like you are also infected with the same madness as some of us here. It is called The Freak sympthom. Unfortunatelly there ain't no cure available. I have been in the same situation so many times and always found some excuses why I should spend money and upgrade. This is a newer device with new features. You definetly should have it!
So as an Ex Wizard owner I can answer my own question
I took the plunge and upgraded to the Hermes (HTC TyTn)
Off the bat I was pleased to see a major speed boost in general UI related tasks.
Also noticed that the speaker on the back of the Hermes is way louder than the 2 on the wizard. On more than a few occasions I near fell of my chair when the sexy bird bellowed "Master I have mail for you"
I have had to re profile my Phone Alarm settings by dropping the volume by 50%
Also Bluetooth is even better on the TyTn. My SE IV-835 headset seems louder than before. On the Wizard each time I would answer a call the calling party would complain about an ear piercing screech coming from my side as I pressed the call answer button on the headset. That is also gone now.
The only negative aspects of my upgrade are.
I had to get yet another type of memory card and the OS is not as stable as what I was used to on the wizard.
This is where the hard work done by all the "Brains" at XDA shines through
Its only when you are forced to use a Operator released ROM that you realize how poor they are compared to our XDA cooked Roms.
I'm running the latest 2.05 htc ROM and have had a few lock ups. I have also had some crashes with my nav software (HandyMap AI Gold) which I have never had on my previous devices.
The other niggle is with the D-Pad, it is too cramped. I never know when I try to press the enter button whether or not Ill actually get it. Maybe its something I will get used to. On the wizard you could press this button without looking at it but not so on the Hermes. With all the "free space" on the section bellow the screen I wonder why they squished all the buttons so close together.
So all in all I am happy with my upgrade, and once the XDA Roms start to filter through I will be ecstatic about my upgrade
Thanks to all who replied here.
Jules
Screen
Is the screen size and resolution the same on hermes and wizard.
I am thinking of upgrading
Yes the screen is identical.
Its a good upgrade imho

does anyone know why skype doesnt work on Ppc
What's your device? OS?
And what about Skype version?
I've got a Cruise and WM6 and Skype 2.2.0.37 works fine.
@+
I have titan and I used 6 & 6.1 wm and no worky
I have it working on WM6 on a Himalaya. How did you install it?
It seems to have trouble installing via cab and needs to be installed using the exe via Activesync (though I am sure there is a way to do it via a cab).
Perhaps you installed it to ramdisk and when your battery goes flat you've lost part of it?
Give us a bit more information of what part exactly isn't working.
Does it install or not?
Does it not launch when you click on it on your PPC?
Which version are you using?
etc
when i make a call i cant hear anyone and they cant hear me and i nstalled with active and cab both dont work
I have a Sprint Mogul also know as HTC TITAN PPC6800 and I just downloaded the SKYPE cab file for pocket pc from the SKYPE.com website and it works perfectly on my phone. I have been using it for over 4 months nows!
Clicking/Skipping during Echo123 call
Hey All--
I've had a Sprint Mogul for about 6 months now--just upgraded to the latest official EV-DO Rev.A ROM, and things seemed to be working a bit better for me (particularily battery-wise, the latest ROM seems to be a little more energy efficient).
So, I felt brave, and decided to give Skype a go. I've been waiting to look into it to fully utilize the WiFi with Skype--cheap and/or free calls from any free hotspot? yes please.--and finally installed the latest available version from the Skype website (can't rememebr the rev #--whatever the website recommends). Of course, it installs, and even calls the Echo123 number, but no sound.
Did a little more research, and found that it's the earlier betas (2.2.0.20 and 2.2.0.18) that seem to be working for people (apparently with mixed with results--some people say the sound quality is awful, some say it works like a charm).
I uninstalled the most recent Skype from the phone, powered down, and then I tried 2.2.0.20 beta--and lo and behold, I was able to hear and record from echo123, but there was a crackling noise (like a CD skipping) any time there was sound coming across the speakers (this is using both the loudspeaker and the included wired headset, also happeded on WiFi or EV-DO, with and without echo correction).
I then uninstalled 2.2.0.20 beta, powered down, and then tried 2.2.0.18. Exact same problem. The sound of my voice coming back on echo123 was actually slightly better than my regular phone; it's just that crcackling that I'm sure will drive me crazy and make the program unuseable.
Has anyone gotten Skype to work on the Mogul without that CD skip sound? I've read through all the forums here, on PPC Geeks, and SprintUsers, and have yet to find anyone definitifely getting great results who can explain how they got there. Is there some other codec or driver that I need to replace? Is there a certain kitchen ROM that will enable Skype to work?
Failing that, is there another program that I can use to make calls for free without having to sign up with an SIP? I also tried fring, but it didn't have any sound on the echo call either, just like the most recent Skype download. Any other suggestions? Seems like things like Octrotalk and SJphone al require setting up some sort of server, which might be fun, but don't really have the time or resources for right now.
I'm leaving for vacation in a few days, and would love to figure this out before I went...any help? Thanks...

Why don't you try FRING?
It can manage Msn, Yahoo, Skype and other SIP accounts.....
PS: It works correctly on my Touch.....
More updates
Well, I've been searching around, and it looks like WM6 doesn't natively handle VOIP (check this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=299950)
I'm going to try to install these dlls and see how far I get...
Otherwise, I have tried fring, and excitingly, everything worked just fine in googletalk (actually the sound quality I got was *better* than a regular cell call)--except that the person I was talking to couldn't hear me. I could chat though, so at least we could communicate. Similarily, skype through fring to echo123 did not work--I connected, but no sound came through my mike.
I also tried a straight up Skype call (using the 2.2.0.18 beta), however the results were very disappointing. Sound had lots of skips, clicks, slowdowns. Don't see how it would be useful, and certainly not worth paying for.
Also installed Octrotalk--but was surprised to see no talk protocols in the program, just chat stuff through AIM, Yahoo, MSN, etc. Also, the soft buttons (the two screen buttons usually on the left and right of the bottom) seem to be unlabelled--I can press them, but there's not text on them, so I didn't even think they were there at first. A bad install? Maybe my Java is outdated?
Anyway, the search continues...
