RIM to turn Windows phones into virtual Blackberries
Software in development
By INQUIRER newsdesk: Monday 23 April 2007, 12:18
RESEARCH IN MOTION (RIM) said it is making a software app that will turn Windows Mobile devices into virtual Blackberries.
The Canadian firm says the software will run on devices running Windows Mobile 6.0 and offer Blackberry functions.
Devices running the BlackBerry application suite will be able to connect to BlackBerry services via BlackBerry Enterprise Server as well as BlackBerry Internet Service.
Mike Lazaridis, president and co-CEO at Research In Motion said the software, "will provide a range of important benefits, including easier support of Windows Mobile-based devices within BlackBerry Enterprise Server environments, a consistent user interface for BlackBerry applications across various devices, and the ability to run third-party applications developed for the BlackBerry platform."
The software should ship this autumn. µ

This I guess is the news you've been waiting for, and amongst the Press Release below the following paragraph is definitely worth noting..
"Cingular Wireless, Orange, T-Mobile and Vodafone today announced free upgrades to the Messaging and Security Feature Pack (MSFP) for all their Windows Mobile 5.0 customers, enabling Direct Push functionality and providing enhanced device management and security for messaging applications. Palm Inc. and i-Mate also reaffirmed their commitment to free MSFP upgrades. In addition, new Windows Mobile-based devices were unveiled today, all of which will ship with Direct Push technology: the HP iPAQ hw6900 Mobile Messenger, the Gigabyte Communications g-Smart, the ASUS P305 3G-enabled smartphone, and the Fujitsu Siemens FS Pocket Loox. In addition, HTC Corp. has unveiled a new product portfolio of Windows Mobile-based devices that are Direct Push-enabled and will be made available globally to T-Mobile and other operators beginning in the second quarter of this year."

what happened to A2DP?
Long time lurker, first-time poster.
I'm after some advice concerning using Windows Mobile in a corporate environment. My company is currently dishing out Blackberry RIM devices to anyone who needs email on the go, but we've got a really stable and secure AD infrastructure, and are going to go with WM ASAP for email, contacts, web etc etc etc.
Anyway, I've been tasked to bring these devices into the company properly; making sure the devices are fit for purpose, making sure that there's hardware support, and...making sure that they can be managed from our Service Desk, which is where I need some input.
I've used SOTI's Pocket Controller in the past and immediately had this in mind to deal with remote management. MobiControl takes this several steps forward and really does tick every box. I've scoured the 'net for other remote management/administration apps, but have more or less hit a blank. The only one that can be considered close is IntelliSync, but seems to fall over in several areas. Does anyone know of any other remote admin apps out there that can operate over wireless/cellular data connections? At the very least, I cannot deliver a choice of one to choose from, although I can't imagine anything else coming close to MobiControl.
Thanks, and well done everyone - top top site!

Do you use Exchange 2003? Either standalone or as part of SBS2003?? If so, Exchange 2003 SP2 has the MSFP (Messaging and Security Feature Pack) included, which allows remote administration - and remote wipe - of Windows Mobile devices (especially if they run Windows Mobile 6.0!!).
Another product from MS is the new System Center Configuration Manager (replacement for SMS) - this includes mobile device provisioning. There's a 120-day trial available, but I'm not sure when/if the product has been released yet. See this link for more details.
My company will be looking into SCCM in the new year as, at last, some of our senior execs are just getting wise to the possiblility of getting their email on the move (We won't be touching those "dark coloured fruit" devices with a long stick!!).
Cheers,
Mark.
Thanks Mark,
Yep - we're running Exchange 2K3 but I'm not sure what service pack we're on. I think our Exchange team are in the process of upgrading to 2007 - hopefully, this will also include some Windows Mobile goodies.
Most of our devices are WM5; I'm the only one running WM6, but most of the devices we're looking at are WM6.
One of my colleagues were talking to our Orange account manager a couple of days ago, and they mentioned Mobile Device Manager 2008. I will check out System Centre - thank you for the pointer.
Just out of interest, what line of business is your company in? From my converations with the other Groups within my company, the scope of this "investigation" has become rather large! Initially, it was going to be a straight swap for the PIM functions of the Blackberry, but I'm also now looking at GPS navigation via longitude and latitude co-ordinates, barcode scanning, printing via Bluetooth AND across the cellular data link, and a few other small (but useful) functions.
Can of worms...pop!

If there was, defenetly you cant find it here, because it should come from Cisco coupled with software licenses. As you probably imagine, you are porting your voice over IP over SIP most probably which may require extra software on the Call manager side to make it recognized the device. Check with your Cisco AM but dont trouble his head with your particular device name, just ask him if he can install that app on a WinMobile 6.1

Yes, there is a Cisco solution called "Cisco Unified Mobile Communicator (CUMC)" that benefits three different mobile devices: Symbian version 3.0, Blackberry v 3.0, Windows Mobile 6.0 or 6.1 Standard Edition. Sample of those devices are: HTC S620, Motorola Q9H, Samsung Blackjack II, Nokia E51, E61i, E71, N95, N96, Blackberry curve, Pearl, 8830, 8820, 8800, 8700g. The bad news is Windows Mobile 6 Prof edition, often touch devices, are not supported. No news yet whether CUMC will be supported on Windows Mobile 6.1 Prof edition.
One of key feature of CUMC is Dial via Office (DVO). It basically place calls from CUMC using enterprise telephony infrastructure (a.k.a Cisco Unified Communications Manager abbreviated as CUCM in Cisco world). CUMC phone sends number over the Cellular data channel. Then CUCM will call initiator first then setup call to dialed user. CUMC user will have same restrictions as their desk phone. Calls made via DVO will show corporate caller-id. User can handoff the call desk-phone when he enters office. There're potential savings on cellular charges: lower rates, avoid roaming charges, international dialing via enterprise telephony infrastructure.
However, to enjoy CUMC on your mobile device, you need the underlying infrastructure:
1. Cisco Unified Mobile Advantage (CUMA) Enterprise server
2. ASA TLS proxy
3. Call control (CUCM version 6.1 or later)
4. The CUMC client which will be installed on your mobile device
5. Corporate AD: AD 2000 or 2003
6. Email/ Groupware: Microsoft Exchange 2000 or 2003
7. Blackberry Enterprise server version 4.1 if the mobile device is Blackberry.
This CUMC on your mobile device will be using GPRS data channel to contact ASA TLS proxy which basically provides deep packet inspection and hardware encryption/ de-encryption for mobile packets. Hence, it improves security for data backhaul connection from CUMC client on internet to enterprise network.
