Change this registry key
HKE_CURRENT_USER\ControlPanel\SoundCategories\Ring
Change The Key "Directory"to "\Storage Card\......\" dont forget the slashes
it works dude, great tip
After changing the ringtone dir to the SD card, as described in in this thread, I have a problem. My ringtone keeps getting reset to Windows Default in the tools/options menu of the phone app, also after I changed the registry key back to Windows/Rings. And that is strange, since the WIndows Default tone is not even in that folder, but in the WIndows dir! soft reset did also not work, and even altering the registry to make the default ringtone another one just resulted in no ringtone at all when a call is incoming! So I reset the registry to the original settings, but still only the windows default tune is playing, not the tune I selected from the original list I had before changing the registry and still have in the tools/options menu.. Any suggestions anyone?
Ok, now a solution to my problem in the post above:
I set the register to point to Windows as the default folder, went to that folder in File Explorer, tapped the ringtone I wanted and selected "Set as Ringtone" in the pop-up menu. It worked, the ringtone was copied to the Windows/Rings folder and actually worked. However, the default in the register still points to Windows as default folder, thereby causing the ringtone list in the phone app to point only to the files in the Windows folder. Strange thing is that the file that was copied to the Windows/Rings folder acted as a ringtone, even though the default folder in the register points to the Windows folder, not the Windows/Rings folder...
I then changed the registry to Windows/Rings. That disabled the ringtone and brought back the horrible Windows Default ringtone, which is logical, since I forgot the / at the end. Then I went to the register again, changed the register to point to Windows/Rings/. I then went to the Windows folder, tapped the ringtone of my choice and selected "set as ringtone". The file was copied to the Rings folder, and now works again, with the Phone app looking in the right folder for ringtones. However, in the list in the Phone App, there are numerous ringtones mentioned that are not in that folder at all, but in the Wondows folder, not the Windows/Rings!
It is all very strange indeed, but fortunately everything works again and I can once again select the ringtone I want.
So this trick don`t work? ...I have the same problem, but If I edit one by one the ringtones in Photo contacts it work...no metter where is the *.mp3 or *.wma file....I want to set one *.mp3 or *.wma as a default ring tone from the SD card....and not from the phone memory!....any suggestions?!
Regards,
Primoz
Sorry this was me above...I noticeted that even with the reg file edited when I tap and hold on the file...to set as a ring tone it say that the file was succesfully copied to the windows\... directory....
Regards,
Primoz
Works really great for me.thanks!
But can only use .WMA files. anyone else with Qtek?
...strange...now is working fine for me 2 ....I have made wma files instead of mp3 and set the ringtone again....but it does work only in the original PPC Filemanager!...
Thx mate, great tip
Regards,
Primoz
...again not working... :? ...I don`t know what to do to make it work properly... :?:

The settings In reply to all.
Use the staps i discribed on top of this topic. Don't forget the slashes at the beginning and end( \Storage Card\....\). And if you are using a mp3 player don't forget to associate mp3's and midi files with Windows media player. If you use PocketMusic go to Player options File Types and select none. This wil do. No you can play mp3's from your storage card.
I made a dir on my storage card called it Ringtones. So in the registry i change the line to
\Storage Card\Ringtones\
This must work.
I have made the same as U describe...and when I tap on the song...stored on my SD card to set it as a ring ton always the same msg...that it was saved to the \Windows\Rings\ directory....
Regards,
Primoz
How come
This wil only let you set a default ringtone stored on your storage card to mp3 midi or wma. You don't need to kopie the file any were only in te folder on your storage card. You can use file explorer. Or a card reader in your computer.
If you want to use it for contacts then you need too use photo contact
Now i see go to settings > phone> and then you can select a ringtone from the drop down list.
OK done...I hope it will work now...thx mate!
Regards,
Primoz
Hmmm...strange but after one day of playing the rington from the SD card...the phone just reset the rington to the default Windows....
regards,
Primoz
I've found that the SD cart is not immediately recognized by the system after a suspend/sleep mode. Applications that are stored on the SD card and that are called by a hardware button generally don't work when pressing in sleep mode (program not found).
So I suppose that when the phone wakes up when a call is received, the system tries to load the sound on the SD, but the card is not 'mounted' yet and the default windows ringtone is played.
Hope this will help.
Yes U R wright!...the same problem with some applications...like GPRS Monitor installed on the SD card...at soft reset, it gives me an error, so I have to manually start the program. The same is with the ringtones... So it doesn`t work everytime...
Regards,
Primoz
I did put my rings to the Storage and pointed there .. works flawless.. thx for the tip ..
So .. is there another one for the SMS, MMS, E-mail and alarm sounds to ??
Regards Carlis
Carlis wait for about a day and U will hear the windows default song...
Regards,
Primoz
Hm .. should be working .. in some day to .. as I put the files in "Storage" and not at the SD card.. had same problem U have with Photo Contact ringtones if I used the SD to store them .. so I just have the Storage for User tones and User pics nowadays
Hope Ur wrong .. time will tell ..

The fix is to reassign MP3 to Win Media Player..
Either by select none in PocketMusic file types settings
or by Pocket Tweak (freeware)
or .. Ur choice of file associate program
Then it works again ..
Mp3 as Ringones and as Photo Contacts tones..

I have a few ring tones that on my old PDA2K I kept on my SD card and yet was somehow (I cannot remember how) able to use them from my SD card as ring-tones.
On my bright and shiny new K-Jam I cannot find a way to use files on the SD card as ring-tones.
So to save space if I MUST have the files on the phone I want to use MP3's.
Well bugger me I cannot make this work either.
Any ideas out there please?
Cheers.

hmm i just copied them to my storage card.

Interesting.
All the other comments I have heard say they will not work if they are on your SD card unless you make some registry changes?
Something I don't really want to do.
So where on your SD card did you copy them and how did you make the phone recognise them as ring tones?
Robin
Windows\Ring\ is the default location for tones. Mp3s work. Just copy them to the Windows\Ring\ folder [use activesync on pc or file explorer on ppc] and you should be able to select them as tones. The registry hack actually changes the default location to a folder of your choice [i.e. on a Storage Card] this is useful if you have a lot of tones. From experiene with WM2003se sometimes this doesn't work well something about the Storage Card taking too long to initialize and therefore the Phone doesn't find the tones folder and just reverts to default. The work around was to have them on Storage, but now with WM5.0 everything is Storage I haven't tried the hack on WM5.0 though.
--
Another thing is you could cut up your mp3 tones [30 secs is more than enough for a ringer] and re-encode them to a lower bitrate [I use 96kbps Stereo] it's around 360Kb per tone.
--
Hope this helps.
try to convert to mp4....its work too....
If you don't want to change the default location for ringtones via the registry you can add your wav, mp3, mid to a folder called "My Documents" on the storage card. If it doesn't exist just create it. Thus far it is the only folder I have found that will work without changing the registry. Cant be in a subdirectory. Files get all cluttered up, but you don't have to do anything.
I tried it, and it doesn't work for me.
I did search for any topics related to this issue in this forum, none of them solves the problem.
So I did \Storage Card\Rings
or just \Storage Card\
I did some trial and error as well, I even put a folder that doesn't exist but strangely it didn't show an error at all. It just lists the rings inside windows\rings.
And I just noticed that it even lists all under windows\my Tones
any idea?
place ringtones in - storage card\my documents, this is the one that works, the others are wrong.
yea, so I did that, put my ringtones in: Storage Card\My Documents. I also tried these combinations:
\Storage Card\My Documents\
\Storage Card\My Documents\Rings
\Storage Card\
\Storage Card\Rings
none of the above works
see the problem is, even if I put a fake path, like for example:
Crazy Storage\Your Documents
that still lists ringtones under windows\rings for some reason.
it doesn't give me any error message.
so please please anyone help me?
thanks
Strange that works for me - what ringtone format are you trying to use.?
I might have guessed the problem - change the ringtones under settings\phone\ringtone NOT sounds ¬ifications\phone incoming call
Try reg tweak - goto HKCU\controlpanel\soundcategories\ring and change directory to the one you want (If that is not you have already done)
yea i did that already the registry hack, no luck for me.
i tried both but can't find the ringtone.
They are in mp3s.
It should be showed hough, cuz when i put it under windows/rings it would show.

I tried a mp3 in my \storage card\my documents\ folder and it worked so something odd is happening for you. What rom are you using and what storage card is it?
I'm using the latest rom that is available in this forum (cingular?) and i dont know the brand of the storage card because it's an oem and it's 2 gb.
I can put files in it, I able to play music from my storage card. So I don't think storage card is the problwm, maybe it's the rom?
After changing keys in the registry soft-reset by holding down the power key.
This is what is working for me:-
I put ringtones in Storage Card/My Documents
I made NO changes to the registry at all
Ringtone are wav files
QTEK 9100
Rom 2.17.7.2 WWE
2Gb Sandisk storage card

Same with me. I'm using mp3's. No need for registry change
It works without changing the registry!
I also put a folder onto the storage card \My Documents and put the ringtones (mp3) in there.
But as stated already: Change the ringtone under Settings\Phone and NOT Sounds & Notifications.
BUT there is a limitation you are not able to see the ringtones on the storage card in Agenda Fusion ( where you can give each contact a personal ringtone )
i have been busy for the past few days and just tested it now
and its working.
thanks alot guys
However I can only put it under Storage Cards\
If I create another folder under Storage Cards\My Documents\ it doesn't work.
Any ideas?
I dumped my MP3 ringtones under Storage Cards\My Documents\ and it worked fine. No reg hacks or anything.
I have a cingular 8125
IPL 2.17
SPL 2.17
GSM 2.07.10
OS 2.17.72
After i installed the newer ROM for cingular in mine only works the WMA no more mp3 so maybe the same thibg is happening to you.
Try it and keep us posted!
Hi there. A noooobie question for the weekend.
How can I put an mp3 as a ring tone in the magician? It seems only to work with "wav".
Thanks.
Yup "wav" is the default ringtone format file in Magician. U can use 3rd party software like Pocket Ringo to use mp3 as ringtone in Magician.
no need for a third party software. just copy the ringtone in windows/rings folder an then u can have the mp3 as ringtone.

Sorry TS my mistake, I want to correct my statement, yes lanuk79 is right, no need to use 3rd party software, just put mp3 files on Windows/Rings folder to use mp3 as ringtone.
@lanuk79 : At first I didn't believe what you'd said. But when I tried it on my magician then I realized that you're right. Thanks bro for the enlightment .
Note : In my O2 XDA II Mini manual book, it's said that .mid and .wav files are the default files for ringtone. It doesn't mention anything about .mp3 files that also can be used as ringtone.
If you want to change the ringtone folder, you have to use software like SKTools (the alternative is reghacking it yourself). The unlimited trial version lets you do this. When I had my Magician on Big Storage, I put my 'tones in the Storage folder, and I maxed out my program RAM.
hkcu\controlpanel\soundcategories\incall\directory
hkcu\controlpanel\soundcategories\ring\directory
change the values of these keys from \windows\ to \"directory you need"\
thats all,you need only a registry editor
the manual is rubbish!! and yes all u need is a small registry hack to load the rings from ur SD card. but remember that since the SD card takes a few seconds to boot up u mite not get the ringtone u specified. i changed my rings to storage card but all i kept getting was the default ring. the culprit was the storage card. the phone shuts down the power to the card to save battery n hence when the phone wakes up again it needs to boot up the card again. the boot up hampers with the ringtone causing the default ringtone.
true lanuk79, i dont think we can put ringtones in SDcard.. but maybe what soonari and ultimatechicken meant were "storage" directory, not storage card. storage directory is extra space u got if you do "bigstorage hack". and yes, the ringtones (mp3 or anyother formats) will works if u put them there...
I have copied all my ringstones into the preset "\My Documents\My ringtones"-folder.
They only shove up when using Touchflow to set the ringtone. If I want to change alarm / SMS I can only chose the predfined ones. Am I just being retarded, or are is it not possible :S?
I've run into that same issue with mine. Cooked ROM came with no ringtones, so I transfered ringtones fine and they work. Depends on your ROM and registry/ folder location settings. Someone may beat me to it but here's my found solution:
1. Make sure the file is in .wav format.
2. When phone is synced to computer browse to Device\Windows folder
3. Drop the .wave file you want set as a sound notification into your Device's windows folder and voala, that should do it.

I save my ring tones on \windows\rings and is working perfectly, try it.
Where do I find this folder?
Only got "Application Data", "ConnMgr", "Documents and Settings", "MUSIC", "My Documents", "Programfiler"
Can I manually create it, or should I connect in other ways? Using the USB-cabel and just browsing in explorer...
* Nm; found it on the phone explorer. Guess it's not accessible from the computer
About the Windows-folder..
It got thousand!! of files named *****-manila..
What are they..? They make the windows-folder kinda slow to load..

No, the device "windows" folder is perfectly viewable in Windows Explorer. You just have to make sure to untick the box in "folder options" under the control panel that says "hid protected system windows folders and files" - after doing that you will be able to see the Windows folder on the device. Simple tweak really. Enjoy.
That's exactly it
Edit: Apologize for double post, but this is at two different forum members.
Kols,
That's exactly it, the "windows" folder in the device with A LOT of files which does take about a minute to load is where you drop the .wav files. So just sit back and let the Windows folder populate in windows explorer, then copy and paste or drag and drop your sounds for Notifications into the folder. You will then be able to see those files when, for example, changing your SMS tone. Cheers!

Wow, so all this kinda sucks and everything.
My ****ing 10 year old t68i had easier options for adding sound and ****.
Ok, copying to the Windows-folder do work, but what when I one to delete any of them? All at once? Impossible. Since you can't delete the preset files, you have to delete them one by one.. THANK GOD! And I love the list of useless pisspoor preset tunes! They are great space-wasters!
Does anybody know of any programs to convert from mp3 to wav / wma? Tried a few, and they works occasionally, but if the file is longer than X-sec, it all get high-pitched and super-fast.
Why are you not able to use mp3s for alarm and sms? I KNOW IT KNOWS HOW, IT DOES WHENEVER MY PHONE RINGS!!
Sorry, but I was really expecting better... by far..
How it really works:
1. Copy mp3's (for use with ringtones, reminders, SMS, MMS, e-Mail, etc. EXCEPT alarmclock tones) to "application data\sounds".
2. Copy alarmclock sounds as .wav to windows (to convert mp3 > wav use lame encoder). MP3 files won't work.
3. If not used delete all sounds in "windows\rings" (to have a smaller list).
Ok well all your complaints reside in the downside list of owning a Windows Mobile phone. I mean sure everything doesn't work spic and spam as we users would like it to, but we can only do so much to force things to work and Microsoft not make it any easier.
Yes, you are right on having to delete YOUR tones one by one and watching out for tones that are preset and therefore write-protected as a system file. The preset SMS tones aren't too bad, of course opinion differs by person. My complaints don't exist with sounds though as all preset SMS tones take up less than 100kb each and with over 300mb onboard storage space not including a Micro SDHC card -I'd say I have plenty of space.
Program to convert to .wav? Sure, use Dbpoweramp Free. It's lightweight and easy. Program to trim .wav or .mp3 files? Audacity works great.
It's an OS quirk that calls for Notification (non-ringer) tones to be in .wav format. If there is a reg tweak to change that, I don't know of it as much as I've learned about WinMo.

Thank you so much! "application data\sounds" did the trick!
As for the alarmclock, I guess I just need try a few more convertors :\
Is there a techincal reason why they won't let you delete predefined stuff?
I'f you have to get deep down and do some hacking any way, who are they to say "Maybe you don't know what you are doing, so we won't let you! You probably do, but we don't care.."
For sms you can use mp3 files, putting them in folder: My device\My documents (don't use other folder inside "My documents").

Simple use "application data\sounds" for all mp3-files, and "windows" for alarmclock-files (must be .wav). Mydocs and win\ringtones won't work with every ROM.
To have a better overview I always name ringtones files "R-<filename>" and alerts A-<filename>".
