Hello, can somebody please help me?
I have an Orange SPV M3100 which worked "almost" fine until today (except for some problems receiving SMSes).
Today I've made several registry changes in order to unhide the GPS in Settings/System and to move the Internet Explorer cache, cookies and history to the MicroSD card. Nothing else.
I've also installed some software (everything was "official", i.e. no hacks): 3 or 4 applications plus RSAENH_ENG.exe - the "High Encryption Pack for Pocket PC" from Microsoft - which requested a reboot. I decided to reboot it myself later.
Half an hour later the phone was still connected with the USB cable to the PC and working properly. Suddenly ActiveSync on PC said it's "not connected" anymore. At the same time ActiveSync on phone said is was "connected" (!) I tried several times to close ActiveSync on the phone with no success, so I disconnected the USB cable and rebooted the phone.
Now the phone doesn't boot anymore!!! AAARRRGGGGHHHHHHHH!!!! :-(((
It just hangs forever with the Orange logo (NOT the Windows Mobile logo!) on screen immediately after reporting the numbers/versions. After some time (20-30 seconds) the backlight goes out but the Orange logo remains on the screen and NOTHING happens. Even if I take out the battery the Orange logo persists on the screen for quite a long time! Please note that this is neither a solid white screen, the Windows Mobile logo or the bootloader tri-color screen (to which I can get if I hold OK and power buttons and reset).
The phone does exactly the same after any number of soft resets :-(
I can _sometimes_ perform a hard reset (because most of the time it seems it does just a regular soft reset). I chose NOT to reset to factory settings because (and this is my problem!) I NEED TO SAVE the notes and the short messages database! I can discard everything else, but I really need to save those notes and SMSes...
Is there any hope? I searched and read the forum/wiki for some hours already but I have to admit I don't even know what exactly to look for! And I also have to admit I'm quite scared I may lose the notes & messages...
I honestly appreciate any idea as long as it doesn't imply losing that data! Please post your replies here, on the forum.
THANKS A LOT!!!
Regards,
Dan
Would you be able to return it to Orange under a warranty issue?
Do you have the Orange Care Insurance
Sorry if I'm not helpful
Sure, but not yet

I guess that would be no problem. But I want to avoid at all costs the reset to factory defaults! This is why I would like to try myself first.

tried the mtty.exe trick...
Somewhere on this page http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Hermes_UpgradeProblems
it says "Open mtty.exe and select "USB" from the dialog box, then hit Ok."
Well, I tried that but I only have COM1 & COM2 as available options for "Port"...
Any idea?
Dan
mtty options
Choosing COM1 results in "COM1 port can not open"
Choosing COM2 results in the mentioned white screen but with no prompt. Pressing Enter does nothing.
Still no USB option - also tried rebooting the PC and playing with "Allow USB connections" & "Allow connections to one of the following"...
Any idea? At least some pointers... pleaseeee....?
Regards,
Dan
got usb in mtty
OK, if I first put the phone in bootloader mode and only then connect it to PC USB I get the USB port option in mtty. I do:
USB>set 14 0
Write Nand Success
HTCST ÚÈÒHTCEUSB>
USB>
then soft reset and it's exactly the same problem (stuck with Orange logo during boot)...
:-(((
some more info...
Hi!
According to this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=286755
my phone is a type 2b brick: when the phone boots, it stays in subslpash screen (htc or operator logo - Orange in my case)
I installed USB Monitor to provide a USB monitor capture in ANSI text format. However I see that in order to do that I have to "upgrade using the normal procedure (RomUpgradeUt.exe)". My question is: would that erase user data (i.e. notes & messages) from the phone's memory?
Thanks!
Dan
This is all the information I have for the time being. I am looking to find out how to extract the rest:
Model: Orange SPV M3100
NOT flashed at all by me
Bootloader: 1.04
Stuck In Bootloader: No
Stuck On Operator Logo: Yes
Stuck On Windows Mobile Splash: No
Can boot into OS: No
Tried mtty command set 14 0: Yes
Tried wiki problem number 5: No
mtty info 2 output: HTCSORANG008GܲHTCEUSB>
Current Device Status: unusable
mtty info 7 output:
HTC Integrated Re-Flash Utility, Common Base Version : 1.50a
Device Name: H, Bootloader Version : 1.04
Built at: May 26 2006 20:17:35
Copyright (c) 1998-2006 High Tech Computer Corporation
CPU ID=0x41129200
Main CPLD version=0x5
Upper CPLD version=0x4
Main Board version=0x6
additional info - is it any good?
I have no idea what these codes are, but at startup the phone displays on the bottom-left:
M 05
S 04
B 06 D 1.23
And then very briefly it also displays on right:
R 1.06.04.00
G 32.37.7010.01H
And then it just hangs with the Orange logo...
You still stuck??
I have something you can try but it will wipe all your data, but you wont have to flash another ROM
Ok, you gone offline now.
If you want to try, whilst Orange splash screen is there, press and hold both left and right softkeys and soft reset. Will be presented with a white screen with a choice to wipe or not. Use the corresponding button on keyboard to wipe phone.
By looking at your mtty readout i do not think your device is bricked. Just think you may have installed something that your device doesnt agree with. Saves having to reflash or replace under warrenty.
REMEMBER ALL DATA ON YOUR PHONE WILL BE LOST
S.K.
Yes, it's still the same... But I'm going to bed now because it's already 5:25 AM here and I have to wake up in 1.5 hours
Please let me know what I should try (and the consequences if you are so kind)
Cheers!

To be honest mate, i cant see any other way. The only way to see what wnet wrong is to get into the OS and unfortunately that doesnt seem as its going to happen.
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but many of us have had to go through with data loss, just another "undocumented feature" of a Windows Mobile device.
Best of luck, let me know how you get on.

I've had my Qtek 9000 for a week. I've spent most of that week installing software, and getting it setup (using a lot of useful info from this site).
This afternoon it locked up, and wouldn't respond to any button presses (including the on/off button)
Soft resets result in it powering backon, but stopping at the boot screen, after displaying the ROM versions in red text.
Eventually, I tried a hard-reset. Same thing happens - process goes ok until it displays the ROM version, when it just sits there. I've tried removing the SD card and SIM card and hard-resetting. No Joy.
I had just installed OzVGA, and was testing it when this occurred, but that is probably just a coincidence (surely a hardreset should fix anything bad that happened there?)
I hadn't at any point played with the ROM.
What should I try next?
And, does anyone know if I'm going to be able to get support for this in the US from Qtek? (I bought it in the UK), new
Thanks in advance.

Unfortunately, no such luck
I'd tried that before, but the battery was only out for a short time. This time it was been out for at least 15 minutes.
Does anyone know if there's any kind of hardware or diagnostic test mode it can be booted into?

How about updating/upgrading thr ROM?
This might work. you'll have to reinstall everything again, though

Thanks - I may try that tomorrow. However, I'm a little concerned that updating it with a new ROM might invalidate the warranty (especially if it's not a QTEK ROM)
I was hoping that there was some kind of hidden 'diagnostic mode' I could try first, before taking that step. I've also been looking everywhere on the web, and I can't find anyone else that this has happened to. This makes me think it may be a hardware problem, though the way it just 'happened' seems more like s/ware.
Anyway, I'm out today so this will have to wait until tomorrow. My biggest concern at the moment is how I'm going to get any warranty support in the US. All I have at the moment is a very expensive brick!

Have you tried entering bootloader mode?
BACKLIGHT BUTTON + POWER BUTTON + RESET HOLE
Then the screen will go blank then show the words SERIAL but you have to look real good because the backlight will be off when the serial is displayed. If it does go there, try hard resetting from there:
__ + __ + RESET HOLE
Hope this helps. WHat's your ROM verison/language anyway?

Thanks - but no improvement. I do get the 'serial' screen (with v1.00 displayed at the bottom), but when I do _+_+reset from there, it just goes back to the 'normal' Qtek boot screen and sits there.
Unfortunately, not having access to the OS, I don't know exactly the ROM versions etc. However, the info displayed in red text on the Qtek boot screen (where it hangs) is as follows. How do you interpret this?
R 1.03.00
G 42.36.P8
D 1.13.64 WWE
Thanks for your help - I'm hoping I can get this resolved without having to find out how to get support from Qtek!

You have a WWE (English QTEK ROM) but since you cannot enter bootloader mode, I don't think you will be able to update. You might have to return your device to where you bought it

Jorgee,
I notice (in the HTC 'confidential' manual I just downloaded) that there is a diagnostic program. Apparently, I put it on an SD card, and do Power+Backlight+reset to invoke it.
Do you know if that diagnostic tool is available anywhere on here, or elsewhere on the web?
Also - I wqas trying to find exactly how to enter 'bootloader' mode (after I have the 'serial' screen). Should it boot differently from here when doing a hware reset (_+_+reset)?
Regards
Steve
Actually, when you see SERIAL, that means you are already in bootloader mode. One question, what ROM do you wanna update to? QTEK, IMATE, MDA, O2?
Do the following once you get the SERIAL ON THE SCREEN:
1. Open active SYNC, then choose FILE>CONNECTION SETTINGS, then remove the check on the USB option.
2. Connect the phone to the computer with the sync cable. This should change the SERIAL on the device to say USB.
3. Run the ROM Upgrade (whichever it is you chose).
This shoulod update your device. If you are able to enter bootloader mode (SERIAL) this means that probably your ROM (OS) is damaged. Just update it even to the same verison then it should work.
If you get Country ID error while trying to update or any other error, just inform me, i'll walk you through the process.

Hi Jorgee,
I'd prefer to go for the QTEK Rom (I'm assuming, from the info I posted above that I currently have 1.13.64 WWE). I'd like to go for the same or later version of this, but looking on the ftp site here I can't see ay QTEK ROM upgraders.
I have checked that when I plug in the USB I get 'USB' appearing on the screen, so I'm hoping that a ROM upgrade will at least work, even if it doesn't fix my problem.
One other thing that concerns me. When I plug into USB (with either a PC or the AC charger) the LEDs aren't lighting to indicate it's charging. Obviously, when during the flash upgrade I should make sure I have a reasonably charged battery. However, I don't know if I do (or even if it's currently charging).
-Steve
I guess leave it charged using the AC adapter for an hours, then here's the QTEK ROM.
ftp://xdaupload:[email protected]/Universal
Under Shipped ROM's you should see the QTEK.
If you cannot find it, tell me, ill send it to you. Trying to avoid this because it is almost 60MB in size

Thanks - I'd already found it on the devbuzz site, and am currently giving the unit an hour or two's charge before trying this. Wish me luck!!
-Steve
OK, here's what happened when I tried to update with the same Qtek firmware:
Initial dialog (that shows old and new (to be installed) firmware versions had blanks for all three firmware versions currently installed.
Started the upgrade, and left it running (couldn't bear the tension of watching!). Came back, and found the following error message displayed:
"Error 113: Extended ROM Update Error"
The update tool indicated that I should 'try again'. I'm currently re-charging the unit, and hoping (against hope) that this error was caused by insufficent battery charge.
-Steve
Okay, but maybe it just didn't update the extended ROM but the OS rom has been updated properly. After this error, try the __ + __ + reset button and see if it does boot fine.

No luck.
I've also tried re-flashing a second time, but this time I watched it to see what happens
As the radio firmware is flashing, a message to that effect is shown on the Qtek screen. Once that is finished, the upgrade tool starts the extended ROM flash. At that time the Qtek's screen goes completely blank. The, after a minute or two, the upgrade tool reports that the extended ROM failed to upgrade.
I am assuming that normally, while flashing the extended ROM, there's a message on the phone's screen to say what's going on?
I'm also wondering whether to have a go at flashing the ROM in one of the other ways?
-Steve
I heard sometimes just flashing the Radio only might work.... Then after that you can flash the rest. Just extract the contents of the ROM to a directory. Take note of the ff:
Radio : radio_.nbf
OS : nk_.nbf
Ext : ms_.nbf
I just rename/move/delete the MS and NK files then run the update

Thanks Jorgee. Still no real success, but I think I might be getting closer.
I've tried the above (using both the original romupdate_ut.exe and MaUpgradeUt_noID.exe - same results with both).
I've tried each of the three files individually (using the ones from the shipped ROM, as downloaded above)
radio_.nbf always seems to flash ok
ms_.nbf always fails right at the start, and nothing appears on the phone's screen
nk.nbf almost worked. It started, and got up to 87% (tried this 3 times), with the update showing on both the phone screen and PC. Then it failed with error 112, leaving the '87% complete' message on the phone's screen.
Soft or hard reboots still result in us just ending up 'hung' at the boot screen.
Once again, thanks for your help so far. However, I am beginning to give up hope!

I wish I had a solution!!! I've spent about 20 hours trying to get this thing to boot!
One question though - how did you get the 'boot option' menu up (allowing you to clear the registry etc). I might try that on mine (I had assumed that a hard reset ALWAYS cleared the registry.
Given that I was playing around with ozvga before this happened, there's a small chance that might help (though I think not; as I can't see how that would also stop the flash update working)

Hi: This is my first posting and I am new on this board. I have had an MDA that I got as a gift from my Dad and I love it. However, I used it last week and for some unkown reason, it is stuck in the:
'Press Send to Restore Factory Defaults, Other Key to Quit.'
I have been trying to get past this for 4 days and am not having any luck.
I got to the Align Screen and that happened only once. Then I could not get past that. It keep showing the Align Screen and I kept tapping and it just kept going round and round from the Center Tap to the sides and back.
My battery is fully charged, I have read this forum and still I am lost. I would really appreciate any help. Thank you so much.

Thank you for trying to help me. However, I have done both of the resets over and over and I keep getting the same result. 'Press send to restore factory defaults, other key to quit.'
I can get no further than that display regardless of what key or keys that I hit.
I have even tried the two ways of doing a Hard Reset:
1. Hold Com and Voice while pressing Soft Reset Button for 5 or more seconds until I get that display.
2. Hold Com, Voice and Camera while pressing Soft Reset Button for 5 or more seconds until I get that display.
I cannot get past that display regardless of what key or keys I press.
It seems frozen at that display point.
Tried again this am to hard reset my MDA. Now it goes and shows the T-Mobile screen with the IPL/SPL etc. Then goes into Windows and to the Align Screen and for some reason will not recognize the Screen Tapping to align the screen.
I did try to use my PC to recognize the MDA, but it would not. Downloaded WST and that would not recognize my MDA either. I understand that until I get past the Hard Rest my MDA will not be recognized by my PC due to ActiveSync being requried to connect my MDA to the PC. I don't know what else I can try. Search all day yesterday and could not find any solutions. Will continue today. Any suggestions, Please. Thank you.

Did a search for Love Rom and Wizard_Love ROM and only came up with 103 results consisting of some Threads with 1570, 898, 618,787, 893, 464........postings on the first page for Threads 1-25.
Now I do have a Red, Green, Blue, White Screen with RUU in the top right corner of the Red Bar with IPL 2.26 and SPL 2.26 in the Red Bar. Nothing is in the Green, Blue or White bar.
I tried to Hard Reset and Soft Rest and nothing happens. I removed my Battery and then tried again and still nothing happens?
Where can I find Wizard_Love ROM and what do I do when I find it. My PC will not recognize my MDA and I used WST and that cannot located my MDA.
I am at a complete loss of what to do next.
Thank you in advance for taking the time to try to help me get my phone operational.

Use the love rom to set phone back to "zero".
do not confuse guys with this statement.Wizard_love_Rom is a patched rom which is flashed to recover back the phone in some stuck up phones, but it doesn't set the phone back to 'ZERO',but its an italian language rom.
Tonis
The multicolor screen is the bootloaders with IPL/SPL 2.26 displayed, this is the mode from where you can flash another rom. There's no need to get the phone activesync, cuz it won't activesync in bootloaders. But when in bootloaders, connect the phone with pc via usb cable and watch small usb appear at the bottom of the bootloaders,if its there then you are good to go and can flash a rom.
Now,download the official T-mobile 2.26 from the link below and get the phone in bootloaders, check usb appear at the bottom and flash it to recover back to the default status of the phone.

Thank you again for your help. Prior to this posting I found:
epimazzo Posting at: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=294107&highlight=bootloader #1 and this is what cleared up my problem and now my MDA is running GREAT!!!!!!!!
This was the same thing that you posted for me, too.
Maybe some of you are already aware of this procedure, maybe not.
Anyway, it worked for me and I decided to share how to do it. Simple.
This procedure should only be used in case you really need enter into a bootloader mode (Red, Green, Blue, White Screen) and all other ways to do it has failed! Hold Camera button is one of these I am mentioning.
1. Make sure your Phone is not Connected to the PC and remove the dummy card or SD/MMC card
2. On your Desktop PC, open Microsoft ActiveSync, then go to File >Connection Settings >Remove the Selection from “Allow USB Connection with this desktop computer”
3. Reconnect your Phone to the Desktop PC using the USB Cradle and the Charger MUST be Connected to the Cradle (Don’t use the IrDA or Bluetooth for the Upgrade)
4. Run the Upgrade again and it will work fine without any problems.
While upgrading, the ActiveSync program will not go on, however the upgrade is running.
So, Thank you all for your time and help. I do hope this helps others to find a way to correct their problems.
Thanks !
Yes.thats exactly what I wanted you to do
I'm glad you got it up and running fine

Hi!
I got an mada vario 4. How can I upgrade the rom on it? Or can I change the t-mobile touch flo to manila 2.5? Thx! Zoli
Hi everyone,
I recently received an XDA Orbit 2, literally, charged it for 2 hours, and when it was full charged, I started using it, I had it for about 2 months now, and recently I changed my home Internet connection to wireless (It's a B & G connection) so my laptop connects fine, and when I tried to connect my XDA Orbit 2, it connected and then soft-reset itself, and now it just loads the O2 screen, then Windows Mobile screen with the volume controller and I can't do anything else so here's what I have tried so far:
- Soft reset
- Removed battery and SIM
- Since I can't access phone's menu at all, I tried to Hard Reset method by holding the 2 soft key, reset, and the power button - So I get the warning that everything will be lost and to press 'Send' to continue, so I press the green key, and soft resets and goes back to the same situation again.
- The latest thing I tried is to load the Hard-SPL into the SDCard which has been formatted to FAT32, so loaded the POLAIMG.nbh into the root. and loaded the phone into BootLoader mode (Camera and reset buttons). It loads the memory card and just says 'Loading ... ' I left it for about an hour, until the battery died completely (I'm sure it's not supposed to take that long). And still the same problem.
I'm not sure if this phone is now bricked, can anyone help me plesae. I really need this to start working again, I don't have any info. on it. (Everything was sync. previously).
Kind regards,
Since you havent really messed with SPL, i would say to take it back, since its still into warranty.
Thanks for the reply, I'm not actually in the UK and will be overseas for a while. I don't really mind experimenting so I would appreciate any advise on this matter. Thanks again.

I assume just boots into bootloader and then stays there?
If yes you culd try searching out a thread on MTTY and recovery from boot loader but I dont know how well that would work on polaris as I have not tried it yet.

Thanks for the reply, I heard about the MTTY process, but I've no clue on how to do it, since the phone can't connect in ActiveSync mode. Is there a thread or WiKi guide out there?

Here:
I'm pretty sure you can download MTTY from here and read through how to use it.

You need to do Hard Reset, all information will be wiped off. To do hard reset, hold down the:
1.Press and hold the GPS/MESSAGING and INTERNET EXPLORER
buttons, and at the same time, use the stylus to press the RESET
button at the bottom of your device.
2. Release the RESET button, but
continue pressing the GPS/
MESSAGING and INTERNET
EXPLORER buttons until you
see this message on the
screen:
This operation will delete
all your personal data,
and reset all settings
to manufacturer default.
Press Send to restore
manufacturer default, or
press other keys to cancel.
3. Release the buttons, and then press SEND on your device to perform
the hard reset, or press any other button to cancel the reset.
Good luck.
Hi,
I'm using an HTC TC POLARIS100. Today I upgraded my ROM and SPL successfuly. If you're still in trouble and believe the same process will help, I will let you know the process followed.
GUY
Hi,
I've been reading through these forums and am getting very lost as to what to do.
I have the Orange SPV M3100 and it won't boot into windows. On switching it on, it does the orange bit: at the bottom - "m05 s04 b06 d1.23" and 'No GSM' flashes up briefly before the freeze on 'Windows Mobile' loading screen.
On pressing 'Ok' and power button together with a soft reset, I get to the tri-colour screen and it says "HERM100", "IPL-1.01", "HERM100", "SPL-1.04", and either "USB" or "Serial" depending on whether or not it's USB'd to a PC port.
I've tried the master reset - top two buttons and a soft reset, followed by 'R' to confirm a full reset. It immediately said 'done' or something to that effect, but still freezes on 'Windows Mobile'.
All the help threads here seem to indicate that I need to have this phone running with Active Sync on the PC to transfer files to it in order to refresh the ROM but Windows [XP] can't see the phone because it's not finished booting.
Please please please can someone give me a nudge in the right direction?
Many thanks
Dave
as you said ok and power together with soft reset action brings you tri colour screen. At that stage you plug in to active sync (4.5) and ensure you have .net framework installed on your PC.
with the tricolour screen, plug PC to phone and run the exe file from one of these ship ROM http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Available Original Shipped WM6 ROM Versions
you should then be able to get an OS back to your phone. Then get this one on to your phone
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=296722
after that you can flash what ever rom you like make sure you follow the dr's suggestions here. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=1990320&postcount=6
other than that, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=299462 this thread is the only one I had to go on with the first time I played with my hermes.

Will this remove all data from the phone, like contacts, settings?
If so, is there a way retrieve them before reinstalling OS?
Thank you.

Well if your phone is semi dead, you can't really retrieve any data other than the ones on the SD card.

Hi there, well, I'm back after months of forgetting about this but still hoping to get it to work. Thanks for the above reply, but that method of putting software on still relies on getting activesync to communicate with the mobile phone via the usb cable - my phone doesn't. windows sees that I've connected a usb device but active sync gives up trying to talk to it... any further ideas greatly appreciated...
Best regards
Dave

Evening all, I was hoping you might be able to assist me with a problem I'm having.
I've owned my HD2 for a good 18 months or so and on the whole it has been fault-free, apart from the fact that it seems to randomly turn off in my pocket!
Anyway, I'm now getting the so-called 'white screen of death' when I turn the phone on. There is no text or information on the screen - it's just completely white. At this point I can't press anything and I can't do anything.
I'm on the Virgin Mobile network and the history of my phone is very simple (which may even be part of the problem!): I've not changed a single thing on it since I bought it.
The only action I've tried is performing a soft reset, as it's the only thing I know how to do. Needless to say it didn't solve the problem.
Any help or advice would be hugely appreciated. Many Thanks.

put it in a bag, stick it in the freezer for 5 mins and try again. If it boots it's a hardware failure and you need it sent for repairs.
Thanks for your reply orangekid.
I tried what you suggested but the phone still won't boot. Looking at what you said before, does this mean it isn't a hardware failure?
Can you get the phone into Bootloader Mode (with phone off, press and hold the Volume Down button and then tap the Power button)?
Hi fred_up.
Just tried the volume down button and tapping the power button and the screen is now divided up into 4 colours, ascending from the top: red, green, blue and white.
The text in the red section reads:
PB81100 HX-BC
SPL-1.42.0000 XE
MicroP(LED) 0x05
MicroP(TOUCH) 0x30
The text in the white section reads:
Serial
I take it this is Bootloader Mode?
Thanks again for your responses.

if your there connect a usb....if it reads usb on the buttom of the screen flash a wm6.5 rom just to get it back on to working mode...there is hope my friend
I´d still try a hard reset.
If you´re still running the original ROM, maybe it will help. After that much time, maybe some system files got corrupt. The factory ROMs don´t leave much space on the internal memory - a major reason why a lot of users go for leaner custom ROMs.
"Flashaholics" like myself probably don´t make such an experience since we re-install everything on a regular basis.
Yes that is Bootloader Mode. Your phone has a very old ROM on it.
If you just want to run the Vodafone WinMo6.5, then go to HTC's website and download the ROM. You need to use your phone's serial number to get the ROM - this guarantees that you have the correct ROM.
You should have the choice of the 1.72 and 3.14 version of the ROM. The 3.14 is obviously the newer version.
Have your phone fully charged. Remove the SD Card and the SIM - personally I have never needed to do this, but I suppose it doesn't do any harm to be extra cautious.
Put your phone into Bootloader Mode, then attach it to your computer (the 'Serial' will change to 'SUB').
When you download the ROM, then run the .exec file (if you are running Vista or Windows then you must do this as an Administrator). Tick the boxes and the Next. Don't worry about the ActiveSync message, as being in Bootloader Mode bypasses this requirement. The procedure takes about 20 minutes, so don't worry if it takes a few minutes to do anything.
Thanks for your responses.
fred_up, I've gone on to the HTC website (I would post a link but I'm not allowed yet) but can't seem to see what I'm looking for. I'm with Virgin Mobile - does this make a difference to the ROM I need to download? (I see you mentioned a specific ROM for Vodafone)
All the ROMs on the HTC site seem to be 'updates'...
Sorry about the Virgin / Vodafone mix up.
I take it that you are from the UK.
I would then and try and download the HTC stock version 1.66 (Release Date: 2010-01-25) or 3.14 (Release Date: 2010-10-11). The site also has the 1.48, but I wouldn't bother using that. Don't wory that it says upgrades as a ROM from HTC contains everything (main and RADIO ROMs and SPL).
The reason that I show the option for the 1.66 ROM is that when you went to the 3.14 ROM it could only run via the 3.03 SPL, which meant that you could not flash WP7 or Android (Nand) or run the dual boot of WM6.5 ROM and Android on SD.
Thanks fred, I'll give that a go and let you know how I get on.
yes the 1.66 rom is the latest 'sic' that Virgin support
Hi johnerz. Apologies for my ignorance, but what do you mean by 'sic'?
fred, I've attempted to connect the phone to the computer via USB, but the 'Serial' doesn't seem to change to 'SUB' - is this an issue?
Also, the ROM Upgrage ReadMe says to 'Back up your personal data from the Mobile Device to your computer using ActiveSync if you want to ensure you don’t lose any of your data.' Is this possible to do, so that I'd be able to put the data back on the device once it's fixed?
Many thanks.
'SUB' should have typed 'USB' - I really must learn to read.
If the 'Serial' doesn't change to 'USB' then it can be one of three things:
A problem with the computer's USB - try a rear USB connection.
A non-Data or faulty USB cable - try and use another cable.
A faulty USB port on the phone - you have to use the SD Card method.
As for backing up your data, if you've not done it prior, then anything that is stored on the phone (not stored on the SD Card) is lost.
A golden rule is that if you cannot afford to loose data, then you should have at least one copy of it.

To be honest, I did fear the worst about my data. It's not a major issue though - at the moment I'd just love to have the phone up and running again.
I'll bring a different cable in to work in the morning and try the USB method again.
Thanks
I think the easier method is just to do a hard reset. I think I've seen the WSOD once, and hard reset resolved it. Then you need to restore your data and program from backups. Still it is less work than flashing via USB.

'sic' or more commonly [sic] means that it is a exact quotation which includes any errors. Thus it is not an error that the reproducer has made. Normally it is used to show grammatical or spelling errors of the original quotation.
In Johnerz quote from Virgin, they state that the 1.66 is the latest ROM, but we all know that the 3.14 ROM is the latest.
Evening fred, I think I may have to try a different approach.
I can't seem to get the 'serial' at the bottom of the screen to change to 'USB'. I've tried starting Bootloader mode then connecting the cable, with no luck. I've also tried connecting the cable first, but then it doesn't even let me enter Bootloader mode. I've tried all the USB ports on the computer (front and back) with no joy, but the strange thing is that the cable must be working as the computer detects that I've got a device connected and starts the Hardware Wizard. Strange.
Another strange thing is that when I connect the phone to the computer, the orange 'charge' light comes on, but no matter how long I leave it, it won't go green (fully charged). Perhaps it's a faulty battery or something... I don't know.
I may have to try the SD card method you mentioned earlier. Or perhaps a hard reset as recommended by alex? Which option would you suggest?
Many thanks to all once again.
Evening all,
I've just read up and tried the hard reset via the external buttons - unfortunately without success. The phone is still playing up as before: when I try to boot up I'm greeted with a blank white screen.
As a last resort, is there anything else that anyone can suggest? I'm willing to have a go at anything, such as the SD card method suggested by fred in an earlier post, if I can just be pointed in the right general direction.
Many thanks.
As a quick check, as you say you have done Soft Resets, is the battery connection pins on the phone okay.
Sometimes doing a Soft Reset the easiest option is to pop out the battery rather than pressing the Reset Button. This can occasionally can bend one of the pins and has been known to cause booting up problems.
