My hermes fell to the floor today, then my heart sotpped for a few seconds.
Thankfully it was mostly okay, it seemed that the usb cable had entangled itself with the chair im using, so when i moved the chair, the device was slung trough the room, finally landing on the floor.
Picked it up, looked okay, thoug it semms i get slightly different clicking sounds when i close the keyboard, and the battery cover-lid, is easyer to open
Oh, and the usb connector (the one in the device) was a little bent, wich made it have a stronger grip on the usb cable, which is a little positive.
Well, sounds like you've had a lucky escape. Maybe very very slightly twisted hence different keyboard feel/click but so long as everything is working hopefully it will continue ok.
Mike
Lucky, you got lucky.
I dropped mine the 2nd day I had it. Had to return it for a new one. Good thing the Cingular rep I worked with just took the broken one and handed me a new one with a smile.
I had mine in my jacket pocket and was running to my car. I jumped over my trailer in my driveway and it flew out and nailed the Cement! It got scruffed up on the top and a bit on the side.
No hardware damage but since the JasJam is black plastic, i just rubbed my fingers against the scruffs and got rid of the white in the scratches. Now they're not that visible but it pissed me off because the night before i made a comment to a friend saying "I'm so surprised i haven't dropped this thing yet."
Anyways be gentle with your USB plug because i know several people had it come out into the USB cable on their Wizards.
I've dropped my phone SO many times - I've dropped it about 3/4 feet onto concrete (only slightly scuffed on the top, no other damage!), I've regularly dropped it onto the floor or off the bed, and I often throw it onto my bed when I walk into my room. It's a real trooper, I had the screen alignment problem for one day on my first device, but I had to return it any way because there was something else wrong with it (ironically the screen fault happened on the day I was taking it back! haha) but this version just keeps on trucking.
I had to laugh when I saw the topic title too
Ok, Ill add my me-too story. Dropped it twice. On hard stone. Was sure it would be dead. Little dented, but still working. Shock! Surprise!
Scoreboard.
FLOOR - 6, Hermes - 0!
Odd, I figure it is the other way around?

I do the same thing. It's fallen off once, but no damage.
One of my previous phones, however, got dropped all the time. My old Nokia 6800 (gotta have QWERTY!) has been abused pretty badly. More than once it would fall out of its crappy case right onto my leg as I was walking, so I would accidentally kick it into a wall. It's still alive today, although IR is dead and a small part of the plastic casing is broken, exposing the innards slightly.
The HTC case is much better than my 6800 one, so it has not fallen out of it.
This thread is starting to get interesting, keep em coming.
Btw, i discovered that there is no scratch on my device at all, it seems that the USB port took ALL the damage. ill see if i can post a pitcure of it.
Dropped mine from about 4 feet on to concrete (station platform) - after a brief heart stopping moment saw that there was just a tiny graze to the top left corner. Phew!
The panic set in because a colleague of mine dropped his Hermes and totally trashed the screen - his feel from only about 3 feet.
So, I suppose it all depends on how it lands. I was lucky!

Hey who has drop there 8125.. i kinda did from a foot off the ground.. It was soooo perfect. Now im mad. I wouldnt consider the scratch big but i like my stuff pretty much perfect. What about u guys?
Dropped mine from the second floor down the stairs. Broke completely and I'm pretty upset now
MAN
I feel sooooo bad.. and i thought i had it bad.. did u get a replacement or another phone?
I will file a case with my insurance company - I doubt that they will cover it, but you never know...
Was chasing the FedEx truck, don't ask why. I had it in the case that came with the 8125 which leaves the corners exposed. It unclipped and dropped on the cement sidewalk, the corner near the volume control is mashed in and two other corners are pretty scraped up the screen is fine because it was inside the case.
Ironically, if that FedEx guy didn't make me chase after him I would've gotten my activecase and anti-glare screen protector.
Thankfully after putting on the activecase not so much of the scratches can be noticed or felt.
i actually dropped mine for the first time today... i was about to sit down and i was putting it back into its case, and it fell (maybe 2 feet)... but the case cushened the blow. good thing
Wow
Man i drop my today UNPROTECTED.. man i cant believe.. it was soo clean and now it is.. Im soo mad also
Several times....
no major malfunctions yet, but lots of chipped paint.
I dropped mine in the street getting out of a car because I had it in my hooded sweater pocket like a big dummy. It sounded like it broke in half or something (found out later it was the stylus ejecting), but nothing really happened to it besides a few corner scratches that aren't noticeable.
Sorry to hear about your drops and losses!
Does the Activecase for the 8125 have a flip cover for the screen?
Yeah the activecase covers both the back and the front so you can slide it out without altering the case. It uses hinges to cling on but I figured if I used the hinges it would loosen the front from the back so I cut off the hinges and used double sided tape to stick it to my phone.
Droped 2 time by my baby. . . she really likes my wizard. but my baby is more important than my wizard hehe.. rather have a lot of scratch on my wizard than a tiny one on my baby girl

I don't use the keyboard much on my 8125, so that part of the case that allows for keyboard use would not influence my decision to purchase or not.
What I'm really after is to know if there is a flip lid that covers the screen, and whether or not it can be opened without disengaging the entire front portion of the case from the front half of the phone.
Thanks again!
Oop
i used the carrying case that came with it but i might stich some cousion stuff where the case leaves the edges exposed
had my 8125 for about 2 weeks then when i was getting out my 66 bronco i forgot i had it in my lap and it took a dive for the pavement luckly no major defects from it just a few chips outa the keyboard side.

man im sorry to hear that.. ugh i hate that i droped my phone but i kinda gotten over it
While closing the door it slipped and landed right on the topleft corner. Result was a crack in the screen topfleft to right bottom.
Of course this wasn't covered by warrenty and it cost me about 150 euros to get it fixed.
So when you drop it, try to drop it so it fall flat on it back
/Cacti
OUCH!
wow that is expenisve.. i tho i dont kno how much that is in US dollers i know that expensive.. i dont even think i could pay for that just to be replaced
Not only did i drop it, but kicked it just after... i freakin' drop-kicked it!
Was walking under a busy Moscow street and had my hands full when I received a call. I tried to answer the call while still walking and in true dork form, fumbled, dropping it as my foot came forward at the same moment and ended up kicking it another few meters.
upper corners were a little scratched, and the 2GB SD fell out, but I picked them both up, wiped it off, inserted the SD back in and it works great.
guess i lucked out!
Dropped mine multiple times. Stock case was useless. The alum case I have from BoxWave is equally useless. Damn thing flies open way too easy. And, my 8125 has therefore taken several spills.
So far, my personal best was when I essentially threw it about 7 or 8 feet from a height of about 3 1/2 feet onto concrete. It "shattered" in that the stylus came out, battery, sim, and all that came out. A couple of more dents and scratches in the case, but the display itself is fine. I do have a screen protector on it, and I quesiton whether or not that's the only reason the screen has been saved.
Other than that, mostly about 1 1/2 feet drops, generally falling out of the aluminum case while getting out of the chair at my office.
Rugged little device, that's for sure..
Just curious to know:
Have you ever dropped it ? How often and from what height?
Any problems with the MicroDrive after?
I have mine since about 2 weeks and luckily, never dropped it from more than ~5cm.
And I take it you like to crash your car into things too, just to see what happens..

during operation den i guess GD LUCK..... =D
i've dropped it a lot of tymes...liek wen standing...but it got just slight scratches but the Microdrive works JUST fine...!
I've dropped mine on concrete from about 100-120 cm high... It fell and bounced away spinning and hitting the ground with every corner. The case got a small scratch on each corner, but the device is otherwise OK. When it fell, it had been stopped for a few minutes, so I guess the micro-drive was not spinning.

Dropped mine a few times - both flat on its face and also on its corner. No problems as yet.
I dont remember dropping mine, but its got a dent at the corner so im guessing I did
Dropped onto a cermanic tiled floor
My Ameo fell out of my bag and hit a hard ceramic floor. The screen-side camera lens fell out of it's socket but I pushed it back in ok so there wasn't any noticeable lasting damage. Having said that, the connection with the keyboard is a bit intermittent and maybe it's something to do with the drop. No problems with the hard disk though.
I tell you, that was a scary moment!!!!
Haven't droppod mine yet (Knock wood)..
But I do have a question. Whats the make/model details on the screen
and does anybody know where we can get replacement screens.
Having used PPC's for five years now and on my 5'th device. Just last week, for the first time i dropped one - my X7500. :-(
I was retrieving it from my case in the belt,
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=1275532&postcount=46
when the keyboard slid away from the main unit and I lost my grip which caused the X7500 to fall to the wooden floor 1 meter down. It made a rather nasty sound...
I now have a slightly bent corner (bottom left seen from the front) where the metal seams are not flush.
Thinking the unit was totally bricked I turned it back on. So far everything seems to work ok.
Dont know if I should try and test the disk for errors?
Just curious too see how many times people have dropped their phones.
Mine has fallen off my desk a couple times but nothing serious, no damage done at all.
None, but close a few times before I got the Seidio case!
none...try to keep the phone nice and clean.got my zagg screen protection the same day with my phone.so..unbox the phone and first thing i do was straight to install the screen protector(i got the whole body protector).and i don't even charge the battery or turn the phone first.
dropped it a lot. on the street and in the water. still works great. this thing is build to last. although i have a bunch of scratches and dents. LOL poor me!

1 time.
Hopefully never again. Luckily it was in the sleeve and from my back pocket to the floor.
Not yet. Almost dropped it in Costco onto the concrete floor once... luckily quick reflexes caught it.
My wife dropped hers several times really hard on rough surfaces. The screen is fine, one corner got dented inward, and 3 side scratches, on the volume key side, that show some shiny metal layer. Due to the dark colour, you still have to look for the damage to see it.
I dropped it face first into gravely gravel. =( Battery cover popped off, I stood there for like five seconds with my face = O
The chin has a gouge in it, and on the right side of the screen the metal has small gouges too.

Never. And hope it stays that way However, I do have a sh---y silicone case on it at the moment. Hopefully will upgrade the case soon.

Same exact scenario happened to me. Luckily the floor had carpet too. That sleeve is almost more slippery than the actual phone!
I've only dropped my G1 just ONE TIME in the 15 months I had it.
Bricked a few times learning about root, ADB commands, and flashing many roms.
My N1?
NEVER!
I'm even scurred to put it in my pocket with a little loose change, even with the silicone casing + screen protector!
Usually I'd never drop it, but I was doing something stupid and forgot it was in my shirt pocket and it smashed on the ground and the lid and battery flew off and the top insides came unclipped and loose - couldn't get the cover back on and I was really gutted - while my so called friends laughed their heads off. managed to get everything back in place but it has a scratch on the bottom and a few tiny dents on the side. owell. nobody wants to buy it now!
None thank GOD. the phone is so good i am scared to use it.. and the surface of the phone is not that grippy like google say.
Once, Put luckily it was in the sleeve and was only from where i was holding it to the ground, made a cute noise but not a scratch or ding on it! Hoping to never experience that again though
Hi. So story goes like this.
While going to biking I was going to put my Defender case on my HD2, but tried it and found out that these invisible shields and this cheap one i got make it that much bigger otterbox defender dont fit. so I left defender in.
When going out of the door one hand on bike and one with HD2 with sportypal finding satellites, tried to close the door and doing that dropped my precious HD2 to concrete floor from around 1.5m or 5feet. I saw it dropping and I was like NOOOOOO, but my music didnt stop playing from my bluetooth headset so I knew atleast it didnt break fully.
Well what do you expect happened to HD2 with gorgeous 4.3" glass display..
.
.
.
Pictures tell everything:
Better quality pics: HERE
Well nothing really happened, except little dent on the corner, it looks worse in pictures. I was so sure that I broke my precious HD2's screen but no.
You might notice that theres no invisible shield/other plastic wrap around, thats because I took those off so I can use my otterbox defender again!
Earlier, 2months ago defender case saved my HD2 from mud where it fell when I stumbled in darkness using HD2 as my flashlight
Anyone else had these lucky or not so lucky moments with your HD2? Post your stories and pictures if any.
Thanks.
Lucky git, I've kicked mine a few times as when I drop it I try to stop it hitting the floor so stick my foot out, most of the time it lands on my foot then falls on the floor but a few times Iv'e kicked it a good 4/5 foot
Feel lucky this is what I got when I dropped mine from 3 feet.
my HD2 survived a 1.20m flight on stone - even the battery-cap jumped away - but the display and the handy was without any problem - puuuuuuh
drop...
I had my hd2 about 3 days and a friend was holding it while i took off my motorbike helmet. she dropped it about 1 meter and all it did was ding the side...
must admit i was bricking it..
Mine has fallen from the top of the toilet onto the floor... My wife came running in when she heard me scream, she thought I'd has an accident. LOL
Incidentally zero damage.....
Very lucky!
I think I would spontaneously combust if I dropped mine...
Oh I had dropped that one several times and not once did it break. Most of the times it fell it landed on it's back or side. The one that did it in was a face shot (lol), It dropped and landed face down for the most part. It landed on the bottom right corner first blowing out the bottom then slapped down all the way killing the upper half. I used to keep it in that gell case and had Invisishield on it as well before. For some reason I stopped using the gell case and the Invisishield started to peel in one corner, so it came off as well. I believe with the use of the Invisishield alone it would have helped in keeping the phone from breaking. That stuff rocks.
There is always that feeling when you get a shiny new phone. You know that you're going to drop it at least once.
The first time I dropped mine from 3 feet ish, it landed on the screen. But as I tried to grab it from falling I just ended up propelling it towards the floor. Then I got that sinking feeling as I went to pick it up. Just as I turned it over I expected the screen to be smashed (it didn't land on a flat surface) but nothing. Just a small scratch on the screen protector.
Also as someone mentioned before, I've done the whole "use your foot to stop it falling but end up kicking it further thing" still in perfect condition. Awesome phone.
Mine has survived a 30 km/h swipe
i was getting to sleep, it was dark and i forgot that my HD2 was lying on bed
when i was sweeping my bed with a pillow, i felt that i've just swiped a heavy metal thing on the ceramic floor , n i heard a glass-metal sound :O
.
.
brightened the light, and it was my HD2 without even a minor scratch
the glass-metalic sound was from the back cover being popped out
I droped ine once in a carpeted room...I went to walk out and it slipped out my hand and flew out... the sound of it hidden the wood under the carpet was enought to scare the **** out of me... I didnt scream...I was breathless the moment it left my fingers..
The other day my sister bought a new phone and went to me to show me and so i can open it up for her... Once she picked it up for the first time, she dropped it. You would think she dove for it. Nope she screamed and walked away... So i laughed and gave it to her.

I've just sent my device to my insurer this afternoon, dropped from taking out of pocket and having butter fingers, this is the second replacement screen I'll be getting, looked the same as yours although the ENTIRE glass front was shattered into what was a rather cool looking honeycomb effect haha, and the row of buttons at the bottom were dying to fall off too, it's been 4 hours and I miss my device already, using a nokia 6300 at the minute!!!
My replacement was one dayed to my house. It would also appear to brand new and not a remaned unit. New one came with a new memory card, charger, the whole box. I also kept my 16 gig card, battery, and rear cover from the broken one, lol.
I have the amazing wallet-phone! (there's thread on here about it) My HD2 jammed into a faux-leather case, with space for cards and money as well. I've thrown my phone place to place and never had a problem thanks to the protective cushion. It might be bulky but the trade-off is I have all my things together, the phone's protected, and when I take my 11-month phone out it looks shiny and new. So there's an alternative for people with the same butter-fingers I have
Link: The XDA Thread for Wallet phone - it's about £4!

ouch :/ haven't seen that bad crack before, most of em have only screen kind of smashed. I cancelled my full insurance during summer because I thought I can keep it nicely have had luck with these two incidents.
No one was near me when dropped mine, someone probably would have thought Im crazy or something when dropped it and yelled fooock..
Had a incident myself posted the info here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=812370
but the end result is this
Im still crying inside
Edit : im gonna now go with the idea smeddy has just tring to find your post now re the case wallet
The first time I dropped mine was on my desk at work. It hit the table 2 twice very fast. I almost dropped it twice in my kitchen on solid hone But I have quick hands and I caught it just in time. The only time I really dropped it was on a carpet from a relatively small height. Those cracked screens look horrible, I hope I never have to see something like that ever again. When I bought it, it didn't have the original case, but another one. I try to keep it in that case most of the time. My problem is not butter fingers, I am not always careful when holding things
My OtterBox Defender has saved mine from 2 drops. Not a bit of damage.
I know the invisible shield type things are popular, but they don't do a damn thing if you really drop your phone.
My wife dropped her HD2 into a bucket of water once. The power was on and she was even on a phone call when it happened. Fortunatly she retreived it quickly and had the Otterbox Defender case on. After removing the battery and making certain it was throughly dry it is working fine to this day!
seeing all these broken HD2's upsets me, though i dropped mine at the bus stop as i was getting it out of my pocket, and the screen smashed at the top left, it still works perfectly fine though.
the next day, i did it again, but as i was walking and the phone went flying forward into a curb and smashed the camera and made the top right of the screen go black!
i've got insurance, but the phone is quite battered, with scuffs everywhere, so i dont want to claim in case they just repair it and give me back my scuffed phone!
and ive never claimed insurance before haha, i feel a bit silly claiming.
i cant post photos because i lurk instead of posting and im yet to be verified ;(
It fell out of my pocket while biking.
Chipped the metal case
Has anyone else dropped their phone (I mean serious drops)?
Fortunately not, my friend did drop his iPhone 4 off a bridge whilst taking a photo. A sharp gust of wind blew it out of his hand.
I was laughing for about 2 days.
Yup, dropped mine a couple of weeks ago. Bit of a chip on the top right corner of the case by the screen and a bit of a scuff on the bottom right corner of the sim cover.
Was dropped from quite a height onto a hard pavement, so I'm pleased it didn't come off a lot worse!
Dropped mine too. I was busy attaching it to the windscreen for use as satnav, and my wife called me to help get our son into his car seat (after all this time she STILL can't do it...) I went to assist, but the phone wasn't securely fixed to the windscreen... and, well, you guessed it.
Gutted.
Mine has dropped twice from 50cm ~1.5ft. Bad positioning on the nightstand + groggy first time, and a trip of the lady on the charging cable (phone resting on aforementioned nightstand)..
...two slight chips on the top left corner metal. I'm all about the survivor look, being a Fallout fan, I hate those unwieldy black rubber cases, but it pains me to know that those two little chips are there, right out of sight, mocking me for failing to take good care of my DHD.
And that coming from the guy who used a smashed iPhone 2g for the past 2 years. Cracked yet (surprisingly) fully operational screen, more dents in the metal backplate than you can shake a stick at.
Oh well.
Dropped mine from about chest height onto laminated floor while trying to open a door while carrying shopping, unfortunately it did do something to the internal hardware.
Volume keys stopped working, wi-fi would not turn on and fm radio would not turn on. Case had no visible damage so sent back to HTC under waranty, 20 days later got my phone and its working flawlessly.
dropped mine so many times now but i'm lucky and it just hasnt scratched it
can we have some pictures please
this is exactly the reason I made sure I ordered and received my otterbox commuter series case BEFORE I bought my telus desire hd
only had mine for about a week or so but already dropped it a few times, battle wounds... reminds me of my silver back iphone 1 after a few month, just adds character as far as im concerned.
I dropped mine down a flight of steps on to tiles, man that thing can bounce. It only got the smallest scratch on the top edge where i can see silver but it bugs me every time I look at it but it could have been so much worse without my barely there case or if the screen shattered. If only they sold nail polish in a DHD brown to use as repair paint ...

I don't know about the defender but I ordered a commuter at the same time I ordered my phone and love it. I had one for my iPhone 4. I've not dropped this phone yet *touch wood* but it's a great case and if nothing else it makes the back more even so the camera is less likely to get scratched.

Does it give you the confidence that if you drop it from a considerable height it won't get badly damaged, say 2 feet on a wooden floor?
No drops here (yet), but i remember when i got my first phone. It was 12 years ago, and I, Mini Bazooka, was only 12 years old. I was rocking a brand new Panasonic GD-450. Pretty small back then, but it's about the size of a small grizzly.
I dropped it four floors down, and it landed on the concrete floor. The battery fell off. Nothing more.. Ahh, the good ol' days when a phone was a phone, and not a control center for launching nuclear weapons and baking cookies.

Mine got knocked off a table and fell at least 3 feet onto tile floor and nothing happened. I feel a lot more confident holding the phone and I don't have to worry so much about holding a super thin phone and not letting it drop. The case makes it feel perfect in the hand.

The first time you drop it is always the worst! After that it doesn't hurt so much ;-)
Dropped mine the first time whilst in the toilet. Just managed to deflect it from going down the pan! It landed on the floor luckily and has a marked corner now...
I would buy a case but I really don't like them at all.
I think I had my DHD for about a week before I dropped it, and of course straight into asphalt. It got some nasty scratchmarks on the bottom / bottom left corner. I felt parts of my soul (and wallet) die that day ;(
Bought a gel case the day after, just to prevent further damaging of the DHD case.
