Newbie here....Could use some help - 8525, TyTN, MDA Vario II, JasJam General

Hello Everyone. I just got myself a Cingular 8525, and am a little bit overwhelmed. Hopefully you all can help me out.
I am an RF engineer and have worked on UMTS HSDPA network deployments for Cingular. What Im looking for is software that I can install on this PDA that will tell me network parameters....Like Signal strength, RF Channel, Scrambling Code, etc. The "Bars" on the screen are kind of a joke, and I prefer something that shows me a lot more.
Could someone point me in the correct direction?
TIA

Problem with the quality of UMTS reception (signal weakness)

Hi all,
I have got mine since last Friday and I am wiondering if you get the same problem as I do...
The UMTS reception is very hasardous once you are inside a house or behind a single window. Opening the window, I get three bars and once closed, no reception anymore. Did anyone experience the same kind of problem ?
Is it a general signal weakness problem ?
Do you know if HCT is awre of the problem and if this could be corrected using software ?
Thx for your help !

what about different 3G phones? are you able to get good reception inside the house with them? it may not necessary be Hermes/TyTN fault..
Thx for your reply...
As soon as I get outside, I get full power for the 3G network.
I tried it at another place and get the same results... I also found other complaints here:
http://forum.mypdacafe.com/viewtopic.php?t=10308&start=15
"It has been reported that the UMTS (3G) reception of the MDA Vario II (HTC Hermes) is not strong enough. As reported in the German CONNECT magazine, they had problems connecting to UMTS networks, especially in areas where the signal was weak.
Let's hope that this problem can be fixed with a simple software update, otherwise this could spell trouble for HTC. The problem should be the same across the board for the other brand names of the Hermes.
I hope Dopod is aware of this issue and get it solved before launching their model in Malaysia or anywhere else. "
What about your reception inside a building ???
I am concerned because the signal is nothing but weak in my area !
I live in London (zone 3) and I'm getting the same thing. Inside my flat reception alternates between no UTMS or 1 bar - even though standard GSM signal is full strength.
I found an explanation. The building where my office is located has special protection... Sadly, it blocks only UMTS signal, GPRS and GSM are not affected. Maybe someone can help us to understand why UMTS seems to be so sensitive to this protection ??
You may try another building and see if the problem occures. For me at least, it doesn't
Hope this helps.
Regards,
Lio
This could be a typical situation as UMTS generally runs at 1900MHZ and above in Europe/Asia. The higher the frequency, the worse the building penetration. The only fix is very high density tower distribution. I had a lot of issues with GSM 1900MHZ in USA too. Once Cingular lit up the 850mhz band my building problems went away.
I was wondering if this would be a UMTS issue....
yah.. it does seem that UMTS signals are definite weaker in general.. but i guess it is still developing/rolling out in most countries so let's give it a little time eh?.. really hope it gets fixed soon tho!
hi People! i have the same problem with UMTS with my Hermes: im my flat my nokia phone can discover all the italian network (tim, vodafone, H3G and Wind) but my pda can only discover vodafone and tim. i changed radio roms but the problem remain. if i go outside, the signal can be discovered and fixed. the sad thing is that the same phone (htc hermes) of my girlfriend works in my flat perfectly! i have got the same radio rom version. do you know a way to "extract" radio rom from my girl phone and put it on mine? thanks...

Configure Unlocked Universal for USA Cingular Medianet

First of all, allow me to apologize for posting this in the "General" area, rather than in the Universal specific area. I am, indeed, a bonehead.
I recently purchased an HTC Universal (my version: O2 XDA Exec--what can I say; I like black), and would like to configure it so that I can access Cingular's MediaNet service here in the U.S. I tried to follow the procedure for other similar phones, but as the Universal doesn't have exactly the same layout of connection options and so forth, I failed miserably.
Has anyone attempted to do this, and if so, how did you get it to work? I've gone as far as setting up the basic GPRS information, but I can't find any way to access a proxy server on the device. Any advice from anyone?
Doug
If you just change the My ISP tab, then you won't have the option to input a proxy server. Try adding a new connection and you should have the option to add a proxy
I was successfully able to set up the my XDA Exec on cingular. You need to create a new isp connection and a new dialup connection, for the dialup choose gprs,3g. Then for the access point put in wap.cingular. Thats it. Unfortunately the cingular network in the US does not support UMTS but in a few areas, and is not on teh same freqency as the UMTS in europe (2100mhz), the few test markets for cingular have it on the 850mhz band. The Universal does not support the 850mhz band at all. You'll find that the cingular gprs connection is extremely flakey. On top of that, unless you're lucky enough to live in a VERY RURAL Area (is that lucky?) Cingulars metro freqency of choice is 850mhz, so you'll get little service and tons of drops. TMobile is predominately 1900mhz, their GPRS is rock solid, (albet still as slow as gprs is) much faster than cingular and way more stable. Good luck.

I got it connected. Yup, you're right; lots of drops. Since my contract is up in November, I might consider moving to TMobile. How is their nationwide coverage compared to Cingular? Better, worse, or about the same?
Thanks,
Doug

I wish I could be of more help on this one, but I've only used the universal in 5 major cities in teh US, New Orleans LA, Boston MA, Albuquerque NM, Amherst MA, and Metairie LA. Great coverage from tmo in all those areas, a little spotty in some larger buildings on teh uni, but on my Excalibur I get great coverage almost everywhere I've been, including my long drive from LA to FLorida (Ft Lauderdale). Almost guarantee that you'll get better results with TMO if you stick with the Uni, though there are now actually phones I would consider much better.

[Help!!]I can't hook up to HSDPA with my Kaiser anymore....

Hey guys, My device is Kaiser(TyTNII) and AT&T is my operator.
I live in Philadelphia, US.
Before yesterday my TyTNII can access HSDPA (with "H" symbol on the top right) when I try to use internet.
However, I use Kaiser Tweak to change some setting of my device and suddenly my kaiser doesn't recognize HSDPA network anymore, I mean it will only show "3G" on the top right. I have checked all the settings and everything seems fine.
HSDPA function is checked and same as in the Kaiser Tweak.
Can someone help me out here?
Thanks.
i have the same problem, cant go into hsdpa or even 3g only edge. and it seems to have happened after using kaiser tweak also.
Got some help over in the Kaiser forum that helped me. Go to your comm manager then settings/phone/ then go to band and switch your network type to wcdma. after it updated the network i switched back to auto and it seems to be working so far for me. hope this helps you out, something you could try.
I seem to have the same issue but the above solution doesn't help. Whenever I set the phone to do HSDPA through Connections I loss all data connectivity, once I turn it off HSDPA I get 3G.
Is it possible for radio settings to survive a hard rest / ROM upgrade or is the HSDPA side of my Tilt broken :-(
Any insight or help would be real appreciated.
Several times I have gotten "Warning: Unable to change GSM/UMTS Band, Please try again later."

OK is it possible for this to be tower related? What I mean is I drove about 4 miles from my house, got a better signal and surfed the internet using HSDPA. Now I'm back home and HSDPA is chocking and giving me "unknown error 0x80072f78"
What He!!?
One note on my HSDPA trouble, it must some how be related to the one tower nearest my home. When I go anywhere outside a 5 miles radius (I live near the tower) everything works fine.
Here is the weird part, every where else the phone will switch from HSDPA to 3G to Edge and back no problem. Here in town it locks into HSDPA and refuses to switch to 3G or anything else. I don't know if it means anything but it seems to get an IP address I can ping but I don't get any DNS info!.
Now how can I convince AT&T that there's a problem when their support person denies there is any HSDPA services and I should only expect 3G?

No Network

I am facing network problem. Actually i was getting a weak network. So, i take my elf to a mobile shop. The person there ensure me that the problem will be sort out. he told me that it's because of weak network IC.
But, after he changed the IC, no network is coming now. The mobile is in searching mode now.
Someone, please help me on this, can anything be done now?
when i take my mobile out of my house, it catches the network but signal strength is very weak.
Someone, please tell something, it's urgent..
Please, Please, Please help!

[CM10.1] SIM PIN request when bad reception encountered

Hi everybody, I've been using CM10.1 build of July 3rd since it came out, with overall good satisfaction.
One major issue bothers me and I would like to get rid of it: when I enter a bad 3G reception area, my Defy+ disconnects from the 3g network, and it stays disconnected even if I move back to a good reception site, because it prompts for the SIM PIN and obviously I'm not watching the screen every second.
I dont think this is normal. It should retain the PIN entered at power-on, and restore 3G connectivity as network becomes available again.
I'm on italian TRE network operator, which has commercial agreements with competitors in order to fall back to nationwide roaming in areas where it is not present. Also, it only operates 3G frequencies, while when in roaming the phone should lock into 3G and 2G as well. Maybe this piece of information can help you in helping me.
I'm on mixed GSM/WCDA mixed mode (WCDMA preferred).
I tried to search in other thread but couldn't narrow down an exact asnwer, most of the topics I read dealt with RIL BUG (?).
Thanks
