Hi, need your advice:
I'm interested in one of these models and cant decide which is better for me. I will NOT use these phones with a cingular plan in the USA, I travel extensively to Asia and Europe and have sim cards in those local countries so an unlocked phone will be fine?!? I like the looks on the 8125 but the 8525 is supposed to be faster. Any feedback or advice will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Dave
8125 versus 8525
I previously had a 8125. It was very stable and I liked it a lot. It was my first HTC product and I was impressed with the company, so on the basis of that experience, I bought a HTC Hermes, basically the same thing as a Cingular branded 8525. I haven't yet upgraded to the latest ROM but the Hermes was less stable than the 8125, needing to be reset once a day - sometimes having mysterious freezes - where the light blinks, but the phone won't answer. As they attempted to improve the bluetooth to add stereo, they seemed to reduce the bluetooth reliability. Now the 8125 wasn't perfect, but it might have a software failure once a month. As I've tinkered with the Hermes, it's gotten more stable to where it fails once a week.
Bottom line:
8525 is faster, faster processor and faster 3G data rates, but somewhat less stable.
For myself, I'm sticking with the Hermes. and waiting on the 2.0 ROMs.
I totally agree with last post. 8125 was more stable after after Cingular/HTC updated the ROM. The 8525 was it's own set of quirks (freezing, ActiveSync opening for no reason & problems syncing, Cingular data connection trys to take over WiFi connection) and I am still re-setting 1-3 times a day (i've had mine 2 weeks). I am also hoping the upcoming ROM will take care of things like it did on the 8125.
Benefits of the 8525.
- Faster (twice the size processor). After a boot, or opening a program - the response time is much improved. WiFi has been way faster when it works. Although I continue to have a problem with it trying to connect to Cingular data w/WiFi on.
- Jog dial. Very handy to have!
- More memory. It has more built in memory which is nice.
- Camera. 2 mp vs 1, but I just like the programming better.
- Casing. The 8125 scratches very easy, but the 8525's material is much more abuser friendly.
- Keyboard. Has a light sensor built in, so keyboard will stay lit in the dark. The use of the keys is way easier to figure out of the 8525.

Ok folks,
Is it realy worth it so far?
Does it live up to the weeks and weeks of hype and speculation?
Is this the daddie?
I have the I wants so bad, but still not too sure.
The last 'smart phone' I had was the SE P900. That was great but not good enough. I have looked at the XDA's for a while now, and I don't know whether to wait for this or get the cheeper XDA IIi.
Brett
i'll be waiting for the next ROM upgrade to fix obvious bugs like WMP not playing into full screen, lost settings for exchange password/WEP keys, etc. if these annoying bugs are fixed, well maybe for me I could say that this is IT (for now )
Absolutely.
Bugs aside, it's the best mobile computing device I've ever owned.
I love the thing! I always used TCPMP (formerly BetaPlayer) for my videos, and that's working perfectly on my new JasJar, fullscreen and all.
My only problem is a couple of bugs with software (PocketMusic, PocketBreeze and a couple of others) which haven't been upgraded to WM2005 compatibility yet, but that's not the fault of the machine, and will certainly be fixed before very long.
I haven't had any problems with losing WEP keys, POP settings on soft reset, or any other issues which I would blame on the ROM. Even Skype is working fine on my device. I'm obviously just lucky!?
(Of course I may not be so lucky if the missus finds my credit card statement this month...)
Yes, it is
I had terrible problems with Skype until I found out that these were related to a software conflict, either with Voice Command or SPB 3 (New wm5). I have yet to reinstall one to find out exactly who is the guilty party, Isuspect VC 1.5.
BT issues largely fixed with radio upgrade and reading in forums, so TT5 works, this was crucial. So no big Bugs here.
I had an Imate jam/MDA compact, before and was hesistant to upgrade because the size difference is important. So I was lost between the Wizard and the Unniversal. Finally it came to this: Paying 450GBP for a Wizard vs 650GBP for Universal. With Universal I got 3G, video calling, better screen, and excellent keyboard. With the Wizard I got the same screen (BORING), good keyboard (I hear) and EDGE, but EDGE is not support by o2 UK, which sucks for me. That meant that all I got was a new keyboard for 450GBP, so I went with the 3 kilo upgrade option. If you have edge and are happy with your screen, go for the wizard, size matters.
M
So do you have it working using O2 in the UK? When it is out I'm looking at either the Wizard, Universal or strangely the Tornado.
Yes
Bought it buymobilesphones.net for 233GBP + contract 250mins o2 35 gbp, one year, downgrade after six months...planned as I have 500minutes on o2 for 15GBP already.
I have sinced changed contract to 30gbp per month with 16gbp voice 25 minutes, 36mb data, 14.5gbp, and have a 3g sim. Skype works fine on 3g.
And yes, seeing that little 'U' and surfing at broadband speeds is coool. More importantly, it is defintely a laptop weekend replacement, between keyboard and screen, no problem working on it seriously.
More than worth it...
To me its more than worth it, and this is coming from someone that doesn't have access to umts, only the lowly gprs, thank God for Wifi though
Mikey have you been able to find out whom the guilty party is with the skype issue? I can't even use the IM function on skype, let alone voice. I suspect it to be vc 1.5 because that is the only app I have installed and I am having issues with skype. I need to get skype working, and working properly, I really enjoy using it. If only they could do something to fix that echo problem.
Personally, i would say that if you can afford the JJ and aren't purchasing it, then you are missing out on something Thats the best way i can put it.
UD.
P.S. YaYa, the Wizard is nice n all, but a JJ its NOT!!!
I bought an 8525 a couple of days ago and have been playing around with it. The 8525 has replaced my 8125, which I loved dearly...
I have noticed 3 major bugs in the device :
1) The 8525 does not indicate when you are using edge by the "E" icon. It simply has the "G" while producing edge speed.
2) The non-3G internet connection is terrible. It times-out quite often. For instance, when I try to check my email using pocket outlook it sometimes takes forever.. or when i am trying to access a website, it says locating for about 1-2 minutes before actually opening it up. When the internet is working without the those time-outs and lags, it works great (better then the 8125 in non-3G areas).
3) Pressing the power button (when the devices screen is off to save battery life) has a weird 2-3 second delay. This never happened with the 8125...
Here is my Device info:
Rom version : 1.34.502.1
Rom date : 9/21/06
Radio Version : 1.16.00.00
Protocol version : 32.53.7018.01H
The main reason I am posting this is to find out if I am the ONLY one experiencing these problems, if so, I am going to do a warranty exchange swap. If anybody has any suggestions or comments please share it here..

Yes you're the only one with these problems. I don't know how they had the nerve to sell you it. I have searched the threads and posts here and let me see.... no ... nobody's had anything like this.
I'd take it back!
Edit: OMG look what I just stumbled on! Stop the presses perhaps not MAJOR bugs but still bugs of mass destruction!

Here is my experience so far:
1) I have yet to see an E indicator for Edge. I live in LA and we are still waiting for our 3G deployment so edge is all we get. I do want to point out that on page 25 of the 8525 manual it does not indicate that there is an edge indicator/symbol display specifically for edge.
2)The non-3G connection here in LA has always been spotty at best so I can't really comment on that. I do however notice that I cannot connect to a lot of the streaming content at locations where it was possible with my 3125 just a week ago. Also it take longer to get the streaming playing if it does connects.
3) For me the delay for power up from power save is about 1 second.
I have never used a 8125 before so I have no way of comparing the behavior of the two.

I can't confirm this because I've not left my excellent 3G signal area yet but from what I understand the current rom doesn't differentiate between GPRS and EDGE.

Mine is a 1 second delay. No DSODs though, so it's no big deal for me.
well....i too just upgraded from the 8125...and i find the edge to be a lil suspect. sometimes i take longer than it should to pull up my email.
as far as the power button....it takes longer to turn it on when the screen is locked than the 8125.
The speed of a EDGE or GPRS connection also depends on the serving cell's current capacity. If there is too much traffic, you won't get the maximum of timeslots and so bandwidth will go down. 3G is not very different regarding this issue, but the most likely capacity bottleneck is the basestation's connection to the core network. Here in Germany a lot of 3G basestations have only 2 MBit/s connections, so two HSDPA-clients can use capacity to the full.

1. I have never got a E but I am not to sure if Telstra even has a Edge network.
2. I have never been out of UMTS coverage since I got it so I don't know.
3. It takes about 1 second for mine to start-up.
Everthing working great, but no E for Edge either!

Just wanted to advise, my 8525 shipped with the exact specifications as yours. I too am not receiving an "E" for Edge transmissions. However, as one of the previous posts suggests, we may never receive an actual "E" up top in our display. Haven't had any of the timeouts you are experiencing either. My email and browsing via GPRS/Edge(Edge if I truly am receiving it) works fine. No timeouts on either e-mail retrieval or browsing at this time. Over 2 days battery life so far between charges. Woohoo! Also, in terms of actually switching from stand-by mode to power up, takes approx. 1 sec. as well. I have not yet been in a UMTS area, so I cannot advise of battery life, performance issues related to that. I'm still loving my device!

PDA Connect. I did read somewhere on the web that there is a client for Blackberry Connect, just can't remember where/which website it was.

Yes your right of course, I was being petty cos these problems are already posted elsewhere. Sorry for being childish.
I have to say though here in Aberdeen Scotland my GPRS connection is super fast, faster than my wifi connection and it's not on 3G due to my ancient sim card (must get a new one). So more to do with coverage/local GPRS conditions I guess. Weird cos until a few days ago it continually timed out with page not found and now works amazingly well. I changed nothing and I do not pay for a data tarriff!! I do of course get charged for bytes downloaded but still lots of folk on o2 like me don't get this unless they have a data contract. Weird.

For those of you who have connection problems, try switching to the isp.cingular AP (requires the PDA Connect plan). I had all sorts of difficulties when using the default wap.cingular AP, but the ISP one works fine...

(boohoo)But I don't wanna pay $25 more a month... (/boohoo)
I'm thinking about it, I just want to know for sure it'll fix these problems because I probably can't go back if it doesn't...
Is it possible to test the isp.cingular settings (and get charged) before switching, or do they not work at all without PDA connect on my account?
Just as a headsup to everyone who got the 8525 from Cingular, one of the things I was able to find out is the "G" in this case, also stands for Edge, I also believe it may or may not be in the documentation but have not been able to confirm that yet, so in this case:
"G" - GPRS, GSM and EDGE
"U" - UMTS and HSDPA
Please take this with a grain of salt.
JB
Can anyone explain the difference between the "wap.cingular" and the "isp.cingular" configurations and the step necessary to make the adjustments?
Also, I have been having some weird connectivity issues where my cingular signal become unstable when switching the Wifi radio on and off. The only way to recover is to soft reset the 8525.
I live in metro Philadelphia and have tested this both in the city and the surrounding suburbs.
Thanks!

I've got an 8125 and an 8525 side by side in the same room, and the 8125 has an E, and the 8525 says G. Now, the documentation I have clearly distinguishes between the two. "Status Indicators" on the last page of the "Getting Started Guide."
I am using mediaNET on both.
This is a little annoying, but honestly, the speed is the same. Unless someone can confirm that this is causing lower speeds to be rejected, it's just an annoyance that, if I recally from my 2125, can be tweaked in the registry or some other simple tweak.
"Dial up"
Also, I'm having some irregularities using the 8525 as a "modem" for my computer. I have a C2D MacBook Pro, running Mac OS 10.4.8 and Windows XPSP2. With my 8125 I could use "dialup" on the Mac side via BT. On the Windows side, I could use dialup using the USB connection. (And BT in bootcamp)
I also have tested this with a regular plain HP PC laptop.
I have noticed that it doesn't always connect on the first try, whereas the 8125 always did. The connection speed is the same as tested on DSLreports mobile, but I have to say, I find this a little odd that it doesn't always connect.
I am far away from the nearest 3G area, so I won't be able to test it there until my next trip, but, oy....
Anyone else with this problem?

The cingular rom on the 8525 DOES NOT (not yelling) include an E icon, only G and U. When in G you are actually on EDGE, run a speedtest and you will see. Hopefully they will correct this in the future release. And since there is no included E icon there is no reg tweak that will correct this.
Well, I come to a point where I cannot use my Hermes as a 24h phone. I love it as an admin tool and I access our company servers via VPN (ncp VPN client does a marvellous job with Lancom firewalls) - but the occasional freezes (DSOD) are a real pain since I have to be available all the time and I do not even see the phone froze long time ago while having the screen off.
My question: What would be an ideal WM5 phone edition hardware addition to my TyTN?
I need a keyboard, I need 320*240 (well, the Palm 750v has its issues, we use it for some management folks and they regularly complain about freezes as well...) and I would like WiFi. I do not need UMTS/3G as long as it has fast GRPS (EDGE) .
MY ideas are:
the imate JAQ3 or the HTC P4350/Herald.
My key selection criteria:
Stability.
Could anyone give me his personal experiences about these 2 devices?
Regards
Apple*
Nothing gr8 yet...U should wait for upcoming hermes successor so called Kaiser should be here soon with Gps
This may or may not be helpful, but I've heard that with a few tweaks like overclocking and the new AKU3.3 that the Wizard/8125 is pretty good...
Just install the latest ROM, will stop all the sillyness of the TyTN, then when the AKU 3 ROM comes out, more sillyness will be stopped.
I'm getting close do a desicion, and that will probably be to buy an Atom Life, not wait for the I-Mate Ultimate 7150. But is there anything that should make me rethink that? I have owned an original Atom for more than a year, so I know about the not so good screen, and I know that the battery time isn't all that great (but I have extra batteries). But the 3.5G, the fast CPU and the small form factor is what's winning me. Any suggestions?
y dnt u go for O2 Flame ??
i knw its a bit huge !! but its really good!!
No HSDPA. Slower CPU. And I prefer smaller form factor to bigger screen, basically.
man buy d flame
atom life will ruin your life
You should look at the date of threads... I have had the Life more than a month now, and I'm very satisfied with it. A few early problems turned out to be software that didn't want to play nice with WM6.
I have had my Atom Life for about 4 months now. I upgraded it to the latest WM6 ROM found on the O2 web site. My previous device was an I-Mate Jam.
I don't use a lot of the advanced features in the Atom Life, because of my current Telco provider (T-Mobile USA). So, I'm only using Edge, not 3G or 3.5G. I'm also not using VTCall or the FM radio. I do use WiFi and this seems to work well, although not as convenient as being on a PC. I do use Skype on occasion (under WiFi) and that has worked well too. I have a stereo blutooth earphone by Motorola that works great. I'm checking email (POP3) and going to the Internet, no problem. I bought Spb Mobile Shell for launching application and that's probably the smartest buy I've ever made for my device. I almost never use the stylus for most standard operations, thanks to this great application. I also use Microsoft Voice Command. With this, no need to ever look at your screen or fumble with searching for contacts: making phone calls and launching applications are a cinch. I also have a bunch of other applications (various databases, MetrO, PDF reader), all working flawlessly. The camera is adequate. It's never going to replace a real camera, but for quick shots it's actually pretty decent. I don't use my PDA as a major input device. Therefore, I mostly use the build-in keyboard for typing things in and that's fine for me. I do travel extensively overseas and the Atom Life has worked flawlessly on any network it's been connected to.
The only major issue I have with the Atom Life. It doesn't notify me when I have a voicemail waiting for me. Technical support was useless. They basically told me: "sorry, we don't support the Atom Life in the US". I do get notification for missed calls and SMS, but not for voicemail. I have searched the Internet every which way and found no solution, except for a recommendation to change my Radio ROM (I have no clue on how to do this and I don't want to brick my phone). If anyone has any ideas on how to solve this problem, let me know. I will be forever grateful!!
Otherwise, I am fairly pleased with the Atom life, as you may have guessed.
Hello.
I used to own a HTC TyTN (Hermes) for a while but I sold it because I had some problems with screen alignment and sometimes the phone was on and geting a good reception and still I couldn't be reached.
Anyway, now I would like to buy a new PDA and I am thinking about buying a new TyTN or a P4350 (Herald). What do you guys think?
- The TyTN has a Samsung 400 mhz processor and sometimes I found it a tad slow, the Herald has a 200mhz processor found on most HTC products. Will the Herald be even slower?
- I see the Herald has no dedicated buttons on top of the screen (for Outlook and Internet Explorer) but can I set a given button to launch a program? (like arrow up, down, etc..) It was not possible on the Hermes.
- In size and weight matters I think we all agree that the Herald is better.
- Connectivity: the Herald has no IrDA (which is useless to me) and no UMTS. Can I have a decent internet connection speed with EDGE or HSDPA?
- Herald doesn't have video call support but it's not that important, altought I have 120 minutes of video calls for free and I won't spend them.
- What is really important is the qwerty keypad. It's just imposible to write sms or email with the virtual keyboard. Which keypad is better? Herald's or TyTN's?
EDIT: - Macro mode on the TyTN was really great and usefull. That one will me missed if I buy a Herald.
Which one would you suggest knowing that I will use it mainly for web browsing, reading and writing emails, phone calls, listening to mp3s, etc...
Thanks a lot.
if one of your main concerns is web browsing
if you have 3G in your Area...seems like the TyTN would be the choice
as it has a UMTS/HSDPA Radio
as long as you have a way of charging it when the battery gets eaten up
the 400mhz vs 200mhz issue
yes, im sure that the 200mhz would be slower than the hermes
Keyboard-Wise
idk about the Herald...but my TyTN Keyboard has become a little unresponsive and i need to press some buttons hard sometimes
i think this is a hardware defect and im looking into it
it does require me to take mine apart...again...lol
hope this helps
Hey,
I have first an TYTN and sold them (Buy Dezember 2006): A lot of Problems and bugfixes
Then I buy an Herald: First wonderfull, but if you use many programms 200mHZ to slow. No scroll whell but ab better keyboard.
4 Weeks ago I sold them and buy again a TYTN and since then; I love it, but the keyboard from the Herald is better
----> If you ask me: I will buy an TYTN again
Regards
Oliver

if one of your main concerns is web browsing
if you have 3G in your Area...seems like the TyTN would be the choice
as it has a UMTS/HSDPA Radio
as long as you have a way of charging it when the battery gets eaten up

Thank for your answer.
Well, I do have 3G coverage and I will use the device for web browsing and email so I think the Hermes (TyTN) would suit me better. What kind of connections does the Herald have? Here is only states that it has EDGE. How fast can that go?
For a Comparison between EDGE and HSDPA
in my area my results were:
EDGE: 156kb/s
HSDPA: 896kb/s
and HSDPA had a much lower pingtime
the herald is a lot thinner if that matters, and to my girlfriend( and myself if i needed a keyboard) a slim phone almost means more than anything. the 200mhz didn't feel slower yet, but then i'll run two programs max, and could live with the speed since the tytn didn't feel too much faster.
we're with t-mobile, so 3g wasn't important or available, but if i had it, i'm unsure that would sway me. going wifi doesn't seem all that fast either. we don't browse the web much, mostly just email and certain data-pulling programs so the 3g isn't all that to us.
but the keyboard, and all front keys, and the sliding keyboard mechanism are all so much nicer. the front keys are the best of the 6-8 htc products i've run across. similar in feel to the Jam, whereas the 8525 are the worst(notice, 8525, not htc tytn itself).
if i had to choose, it'd be the herald unless the web is a BIG need
