I have a problem reconnecting to the Internet using GPRS/3G on my T-Mobile Vario II.
It (usually) connects to the Internet first time without problems (although recently even this has been so-so) but I can never (rarely) connect a second time after I have disconnected.
I've posted about this before and been advised to: (1) don't disconnect (but this runs down my battery and the phone gets hot); and (2) stop all running programs since one my be interfering with the connect (this sometimes works - but usually not).
I have discovered a full-proof way of reconnecting is to use Communication Manager to manually disable my phone and then re-enable it - but this is a pain.
So, I have a few questions.
1. Does any other T-Mobile/Vario user have this problem?
2. Is there any way to cure my problem?
3. Is there a better workaround?
Cheers.

Hi Bobby, I had exactly the same problem with mine, I even phoned T-Mobile up a few times and they went though re-entering settings which worked once but then wouldn't connect again, after searching I came across a thread that mentioned a setting which needs to be turned on which is HSPDA, I phoned up T-Mobile and they put this on my account (it dosen't cost anything) and it now works perfectly every time plus it is a lot faster, I am getting between 750 to 1300 kbps where I was getting about 250-300 (before the connection problems), hope this helps
Thanks for the advice. I'll give it a try.
I am amazed to discover that HSPDA is not enabled by default by T-Mobile. What's that about?
I phoned T-Mobile and the support person confirmed that HSPDA is not enabled by default and has to be requested and takes "up to 24 hours to become enabled".
So I'll check tomorrow if this cures my problem.
The T-Mobile person claimed that this would not effect my problem and suggested I disable 3G and connect via GPRS.

It won't, the two are unrelated. I had the same problem a few months back and it miraculously cleared up. I wish I could tell you I knew why, but I do remember that I uninstalled some applications and removed a few things on the today page. All I can suggest is giving it a try and see what happens. Maybe post a list of your apps and I'll see if I recognise any?

Don't know why they do not set up HSPDA as a default, maybe they are trying to restrict the usage? I did read on another forum that T-Mobile can be reluctant to turn HSPDA on and it may take a few calls to them to actually getting it switched on properly
When they turned HSPDA on my problem with not connecting was solved instantly while I was on the phone to the tech guy, he had rung me back on my landline and got me to do a soft reset while speaking to him and it has been fine ever since, he did go on to say that this had nothing to do with my problem and that it is not any faster than normal 3G in most cases but it has solved it and it is much faster, obviously just a coinident then
Before hand I did wonder if it was due to any apps I had loaded but I did a hard reset at one point to bring it back to the T-Mobile default settings and the problem was still there

How do I check if HSPDA is actually turned on?
Hi Bobbyelliot
How's Glasgow?
Best way to check HSDPA is to run a speed test by running DSL Reports in your browser:
http://www.dslreports.com/mspeed?jisok=1
Works on a PC as well as a speed check if you pick higher file sizes.
On your Hermes:
speed
300-400 kbps = UTMS
500+ = HSDPA
Cheers
Mike

OK, of those, the only ones I've used are eWallet and MS Live Search, which are still installed and running fine. I think I may have had a trial of pRSSReader which is no longer on the device so it might be worth uninstalling that just in case. I'm not convinced it will make a difference but it's worth a try.
What today plugins are you using?
Lee.
One suggestion...
I had only one application disabling any re-connect: evenbyte.com PHone Security System (v1.1.2.2) - after deinstalling everything worked fine again.
Now I am using UTA3 - works.
Might help me then as well. As when im in a 3g area my net access is painfully slow yet in a gprs area i get around 51kb but hsdpa speeds would be better of course!
Do i have to be the account holder to ask them to?
tmobile dns failure on 3g
I have had a t-mobile vario 2 for the last 5 months. when I first got the phone I was excited to get the hsdpa activated and quickly phoned up tmobile and got through to a tech guy who activated it. I didnt really notice much speed improvement and tmobile only shows the 3g and not the h for hsdpa, but I was pretty happy with my speeds of around 70kbit/sec (tested through http://www.dslreports.com/mspeed?jisok=1. I downloaded fieldtest_157 which showed that I was connected to hsdpa but the values showed through hsdpa cqi status were very low.
About 1 month ago I was suddenly unable to go online whenever my phone went into 3g mode, my phone would show it connected but wouldn’t find any addresses. I was only able to when it switched to gsm. I phoned tmobile to get the problem fixed. they said it was a known issue with the phone and made me permenantly switch my phone to the gsm network. I was basically told that my phone does not support 3g and hangs on switching from gsm to 3g for no apparent reason and that they were working on the problem. they must have done something on their side because when I switched to phone back on to auto network switching, I got gsm and 3g connectivity and downloads but not hsdpa (checked with fieldtest_157)
next day because I was unhappy with the download speed I phoned tmobile and asked for hsdpa reactivation. the first level who answered made me hang on and reactivated hsdpa. same problem cant download except on gsm switch. rephoned tmobile and got through to another 2nd level tech guy and explained all my connection problems.he said that my phone had never been hsdpa connected and connected it for me. what do you know Im suddenly getting 950kbit/sec speeds and hsdpa cqi status shows all high teens or 20's. for some reason my battery is lasting allot longer and 5 months after getting the phone Im happy. moral of the story is to download fieldtest_157 from:
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index...e=Hermes_Utils
and check hsdpa status because either lots of bull is being told to tmobile customers or there are some pretty stupid people working there.
I was getting lots of dns failures (except in gsm) and getting really fraustrated. I was going to ask for deactivation of hsdpa. Luckily the technician I spoke to (about the tenth person in 3 days) that eventually got me connected, new his stuff. He tried to trick me into admitting that I was using my phone as a modem for my computer and only connected me after I denied it. after he changed something on his side, he made me pull out my battery and do a soft reset. Everythings now how I expected when I bought the phone. It might sound like conspiracy theory but I got the feeling that he only connected me when it sounded like I knew slightly more than the average Joe. My hsdpa connection has been faultless ever since. Getting consistently high speeds even with 1 bar. On 3g!!
I had low fieldtest numbers before my proper activation. now all much higher teens or twentys
keep phoning tmobile until the problem is fixed!! and speak to someone who doesnt have to read a set of respone instructions and has some real knowledge.
Hope this helps
Cheers craig
Moderator edit: Links fixed - now working.
This story is worryingly familiar to me. I can relate to every part to it, up yto (but not including) the last part about getting HSDPA activated. I suspect I am in the same position.
I'll download the utility and check my connection - although right now I can't even get 3G on my handset (I have also been told to use GPRS instead of 3G).
Thanks for the info.
BTW can you post a full URL to the Hermes utility to check if I have HSDPA activated? The link above does not work.

Update on my Vario/T-Mobile Internet re-connection woes
I've tried a few things since last posting.
I removed pRSSReader (no change) then removed Skype (no change).
I had previously phoned T-Mobile to enable HSDPA (which they claimed they did but people on this forum have indicated they might not do at the first request).
My phone (Vario II on T-Mobile in the UK) will still not reconnect to the Internet once I've connected and manually disconnected.
Oddly, I recently downloaded a small program to change my radio from GPRS to 3G (and vice versa) and if I do this then I can reconnect. Also, if I switch off my phone (inside Comm Manager) and then switch it back on I can reconnect. Obviously, resetting the radio clears my problem.
So I'm sort of stuck.
Finally, 3G is still not working in the Glasgow area.

I just got back from my T-Mobile shop. They have sorted the HSDPA connection and every thing works very well now. It had not been enabled despite two or three previous reassurances by T-Mobile staff that it had. This guy really knows what he was talking about!
3G now working in Glasgow area. Slow to connect but then OK.
But I still can't disconnect and reconnect to the Internet without resetting my radio.

I've just swapped my phone (the camera didn't work on the original so t-mobile swapped it) and I had this problem last night as I was reconfiguring the new replacement phone.
In desperation I thought that something can't have been set up right during the install so after unlocking the extended rom and reruning the AutoRun file the problems seems (fingers crossed) to have gone away and I can reconnect without problems. However I am have had a couple of unexplained lockups.
Now I can't be sure that this has definately cured it and it wasn't a problem with the 3G network where I was (Stevenage) at the time (11:30pm). Also I first noticed it after I used the phone as a modem a couple of times (have you ever done that?) but it may have been doing it before (I did a lot of soft resets last night as I was installing software)
Of the programs you mention I have eWallet and OneNote but I had exactly the same ones on my old phone with no problems. The only difference I can see between the two setups was the First Boot was interupted on the replacement device and I installed many applications at once and changed the DNS settings immediately (n.b. the DNS settings remained at 4.2.2.1 and 4.2.2.2 following the 2nd Extended ROM install).
If I have any more problems lockups or reconnection issues in the next 2 days I'll do a hardreset.

Quick question when using pie to surf the net does it hang for a while on locating the web page or does it work instantly.
I have just got the Tytn and looking at web pages using 3g is really slow and really not very usable
I am using tmobile uk 3g network
after inputting a web address it hangs on locating for up to 60 seconds then loads the page very wuickly after that
Anyone any ideas
Thanks
Chris
Very strange. I dont have this problem. The first time a UMTS connection must be established and it is 5 or 6 seconds. The next request are very fast. May be you have established the DNS servers manually?
I get that, browsing using GPRS is painful on t-mobile
how about using opera 8.6 http://opera.com
I too have this problem with T-Mobile, On connecting to the internet over GPRS or 3G GPRS it will hang for some time, wether its internet explorer or other internet services I have on the device (HTC Universal).
As I have web and walk I just leave it connected, but its not ideal. I wonder wether its the T-Mobile servers working slowly to authenticate the handset for internet use.
Its been fine upto the last month or so.

Its also become random now, somtimes it connects and its instant, and actually fast even on normal GPRS, other times it can take over a couple of minutes to locate and open a page.
Doesnt seem to matter whether its a full signal or not, whether its after a reset or anything, totally depends on what T-Mobile feels like.
Maybe it cant cope with the number of web'n'walk use now.
Absolutely agree with you as you have described precisely what my symptoms are.
Hopefully if enough people complain to T-Mobile about it, they might actually admit there is a problem and fix it.
Maybe the delays are because http traffic is proxied
Maybe the delays are because http traffic is proxied....
It looks like Orange are operating a proxy or some other form of protection. A few weeks ago I discovered that they had something in place to restrict access to adult sites, wouldn't have bothered me other than the site I was trying to visit was xda-developers.com.
Even followed their link to get the site unblocked and got a nice little responce stating "Your request has been actioned and the content is confirmed as only suitable for customers over the age of 18." before getting their filtering disabled.

Exactly how i seem to find it, either it works or doesnt. There seems to be nothing u can do either to make it work, reboot, change from UTMS to 2g ot what ever. Nothing has any bearing and its most annoying, tbh i wish id never got the universal now as its a huge piece of junk, or at least the t- mobile ones are. Ive used a 02 one and its just soooooooooooooo much faster in everything.
im using the latest rom and even after flashing its still sluggish before anything is installed.

Having been in a T-Mobile 3G area most of today (Loughborough, Leicestershire) the service itself has been as quick as ive ever used it, getting around 270k on a fairly medium signal.
The times it hasnt worked (long first time loading) it has returned to me with a server or IP error. I just assume that as web'n'walk is unlimited, but has restrictions on use, that the servers are overloaded trying to monitor or prevent certain services working.
Its been picking up a bit lately tho, im suffering the waiting times less and less each time I try. Tho 3G UMTS has really sucked the life out of my battery today, it may be best I keep it on 2G instead.
Haven't noticed any of these problems on T-Mobile in and around London. Have you all removed your "Content Lock"?
As mentioned earlier by Taz69, connection may be slowed down by the T-Mobile servers checking to see if you're 'allowed' to visit various sites?
I disabled my content lock ages ago using 'My T-Mobile' on www.t-mobile.co.uk - give it a go if you haven't already, it may make a difference?
My content is unlocked and always has been so it isn't that umfortunately.

So, Im not the only one  Do you get the problem where it can take 30+ secs to switch between GRPS and 3G too?
Also, I spoke to T-Mobile about slow speeds and lack of connetivity - I can hardly get a signal in my office, although I am sat across road from a T-Mobile mast!!!
They said that as the mast across road was congested, my device was connecting via a mast further away (I like the idea of it not trying to get on a congested mast, but distance causes problems with connectivity too  )
Other thing they pointed out was, if you call them with the postcode that has the problem, it gets logged...enough logs and they escalate it (I'm up to 6 logs in my postcode now lol)
How can I tell if it's switching? Mine says "Connected (GPRS, 3G)"
Since (re)removing the lock it does seem significantly faster though
If your connected via standard GPRS then the connected logo at the top of the screen will have a G on it, if your connected via 3G GPRS then it changes to a U (for UTMS).
Ive always had a delay swapping between the 2, yesterday my 3G signal kept dropping so it would switch back to 2G, and it kept doing this so much I couldnt get any internet for about 5 mins. I know you can turn the UMTS band off, but this makes buying a 3G phone pointless.
I have content lock off since day one, and its always been fast. Today theres been bo problems with the service at all, fast logon, good speed connections etc.
Seems a random thing lately, but its only been lately. Its been fine for a few months before, so hopefully its somthing there working on and it slowly getting sorted.
The problems could be down to the pay and go users Web and talk, for a max of £1 per day they get unlimited internet, see t-mobile for more info, this could be eating servers bandwith within certain areas, i was able to logon this morning, but after 9am i keep getting page cannot be found errors, The little u and the 2 arrows show me I'm conneted but i cant load any pages, I hope this is the case and t-mobile sort this out asap
I have had the same problem now for around a month. I am using Opera 8.60 and it takes around 1 minute to actually resolve the host name. Sites with adverts on take forever. I contacted T-Mobile and they said that the signal in my area is really good and there shouldn't be a problem. They told me to take the sim card out, wait 30 seconds and then reinsert it, and then try.
I have not yet had any luck, and it seems to be the same throughout the country, as I was in Cornwall over the weekend on holiday and it was just as bad.
P.S. I am in Liverpool, and I have a full 5 bar umts signal.
Quite often these days I am getting the issue mentioned above. Even soft resets do not seem to help. Until I reset a few more times.
What might be the cause of this? Thanks.
Hope someone might be able to assist on this. Thanks.
I'm also getting this message nearly every time I try to make a call. The phone then looks like it resets the connection with the cell tower and it successfully completes the call on the second try. Then the next time I try to call someone else it fails again. I came to this forum to see if anyone else has experienced the same problem.
Hey joej, I found out what might be causing the problem: make sure that your ActiveSync is closed before you try making a call. That fixed the problem for me.
Also, here's a quote from an email from one of my coworkers:
"Your Tytn was probably trying to dial a data connection at the same time that you were trying to dial voice and so it has to cancel the data request before you can dial out. There is a registry tweak you can do to the Tytn to keep the data connection always active when the phone is not in use and this may make it less frequent that you would have a problem
Activesync is supposed to stop when your data connection is unavailable. If you are making or receiving a call on the TyTN (or any GSM phone) your data connection will not be available and therefore not run. Do you have a lot of 3rd party apps running at startup as well? I have rarely had a problem with my Tytn and never during a call unless my battery dies on my BT headset mid call and then the device may get confused."
Hope this helps!

thanks for the update, i however am experiencing this issue once in a while and it is not with the activesync running nor a data connection going on. ugh..... guess mine is odd
Me too
Thank so much for the post count me in there too. I am southern central PA and just last week this started happening to me too. I have an 8525.
I have no acrive data connection nor any apps running that force a data connection. Every morning I have been resetting the phone 5-6 times before the freezing stops and it works. So annoying.
I am suspecting it is a network issue with cingular and them upgrading to 3g in my area. I suspect it as I had to travel north this week and discovered 3g coverage in Harrisburg so I am betting that is it.
I feel your pain and I have no fool proof thing to do on the phone to fix it. But man the phone on the 3g is fantastic.

yup, everything rocks in it except the phone functionality really needs to be improved to be more usable.
do you know how i can use the phonepad to do t9 for replying SMS ? right now i am finding it hard to do so as i need to use the normal input methods which is not as easy as a normal cellphone
omg I'm from Singapore using Starhub think I'm having the same problem too. Dopod 838 pro.
A soft reset works for me, but very frustrating coz you dunno whether you are missing calls - the screen shows mobile is up with signal and all but people can't call in.
Just started happening to me past few days but then again I just took over the phone from a friend who bought it 3 months ago (latest batch)
So frustrating. ... seems related to the activesync.. but then again still happens when activesync's not involved.

Same here anytime Cingy plays with towers, have you ever got a message stating the call can not be completed at this time? Been getting that one lately as well.
I think that it could be an issue with the phone heightened by the nature of the cell network.
I am wondering if the phone has issues handing off between cell towers as I have the band tab active and there are freq choices so I wonder if the phone even on gsm has some issues dealing with hand offs.
I locked it on gsm and still had issues with the phone. I locked it on 850 and still had phone issues. Put it in auto for the freq and still had issues.
On the U network on Cingular since its the only one the phone is excellent. Data and voice work great. So it will get better in the US for us on Cingular. But man its going to be really annoying during the roll out.
I'm on T-Mobile and I'm seeing this problem as well. (It didn't go away after closing ActiveSync like I said it did earlier.) The weird thing is that this wasn't a problem until about a week or two ago; now all of the sudden it's happening constantly.
Also, I just installed the newest HTC ROM (1.35.255.2) yesterday and now my phone has started to drop calls. I've never had a problem with dropped calls in the 2.5 years I've lived in this apartment.
Ain't technology grand?
Well things have not improved for me. Today after 8 resets the phone finally settled down and did not freeze and was able to get on the network. It has been terrible for me the last 2 weeks...
I removed the eten dialer skin I was using. I wanted to make sure it was not due to replacing the Cingular phone skin.
We shall see tomorrow if the phone is able to work without multiple resets..
If not it is off to a hard reset and re-load to see if that improves it any...
I have taken the plunge and did a hard reset plus reinstall of everything. I had the same apps installed again and the problem seems to be gone now. *touch wood* hopefully this doesn't come again... a restore takes too long. I have also installed Sprite and did a full backup of the phone including the memory card just to be safe.
This problem started for me this morning. (NYC/NJ Area - USA). I did a hard reset (actually, two) this morning, and it didn't fix it, even when the phone first finished the initial load (in a virgin state). Then, around 11:00am, it began to work again. Now, it's about 6:30pm, and I need the phone to call home to tell them I'm gonna be late, and it's out again. Seems like it's something not to do with the phone, but with the network (I hope). It won't connect in GSM, UMTS, or AUTO modes, FWIW.
Oh well, sure hope it doesn't takle two weeks to "go away".
returned
Well I returned mine. Did the warrenty exchange. So far so good. No freezing and the phone seems to hold onto the network ok now.
I truly believe mine was defective. As the phone would show searching and not connect to the network.
I think that not being able to make a data connection is a network issue as it clears up in a few days.

also in the same area, experiencing similar problems within certain specific locations. Noteably these are locations that I get SPOTTY UMTS service, so I assume a tower upgrade is in progress or something that is causing this. Where I have full umts service, the problem does not occur.
at times i have signal, but calls don't come through (rings to calling party, but goes to voicemail before my device rings).
This is something related to 3G because when the sim is put in a blackberry 8700c, everything works A-OK.
Glad to know i am not alone in this
I have similar problems. Especially in the university of Hannover. There is UMTS. Since a few days Data Connections via Active Sync don't work.
Before I had problems with calls. For example freezing during call.
And of course in the university and on other places I have often to do calls twice.
I called O2 for that problem. They are upgrading the cell around the university to HSDPA.
Hi to all !
I had the same problems, then i removed the microSD card and the problem was gone. Now i am testing the phone without miroSD card. I forgot to say that i had the problems with boot too(No GSM) and now it boot perfectly.
Best regards
O2 XDA Trion (dopod rom)
I finally had to return the phone under warrenty. It degraded to no gsm all the time fresh from a hard reset with no mem card. The new device has been flawless radio wise for a week now.
Problems with XDA Trion SOLVED !!!
Hi again !
The microSD card was NOT the problem ! I tested the phone without SD card but that was not the problem. Then i go to my provider and change the SIM card with new one (the old one was very old so i buy new one) and wauuu it works. The XDA TRION needs the sim card with UMTS suport then it will work fine. So far NO freezing at all. I will let you know in a few days if something strange will hapen.
Best regards
Hi, to all with the problem “The operation failed” when trying to make a call:
Try to switch off bluetooth (specially if you are in UMTS (CMDA) network) and then try to make a phonecall again.
For me this helped to solve it.
First I also thought that it’s only a Provider network problem (I have 2 different providers, with one it works, with the other I have the “operation failed” problems).
So it is 100% a phone software problem. (Shame to HTC)
Give feedback if it helped you too.
Hi all, apologies for posting this, as there I know there's tons of other threads relating to this matter - I've spent quite some time reading (and being confused!) by them, but I can't seem to find a thread which a) has someone describing the exact problem I have, or b) giving a definitive solution. So here it is:
I have a UK MDA Vario II. It's my second one (replaced under warranty), this, and my first one both had a problem where I would seemingly randomly not receive calls or texts. The phone shows it has a signal, and the green light would be flashing to indicate service. However, on occasions, if you try to ring the phone, it diverts straight to voicemail. Sometimes service resumes normally (about an hour later) and I get a message informing me of my missed calls, and sometimes I have to do a soft reset to get it working again.
What I have gathered from reading on these forums is that I may need to upgrade my radio - it had version 1.05.02.00 on it (which it must have been shipped with).
So - following instructions, I put HardSPL 2.10 on to the device, then flashed the Radio ROM to version 1.47.30.10, deciding that this looked the safest bet based on the feedback of other people on the Forum. Having done this (last night) I decided to test the phone once per hour today by just calling it, and I only got to the second test before it failed again - showing signal and green light flashing - but calls going straight to voicemail.
So - I don't want to do any damage to the phone - but I need to know that when someone's calling me, it's going to ring (we're moving house soon, so I'm relying on certain calls from solicitors, bank etc etc). Can anyone tell me of a reliable Radio ROM version for an MDA Vario II on T-Mobile UK? (which won't introduce further problems!)
THANKS!!

Ive never had any problems with calls not connecting, the only times it has failed is due to poor reception and ofcourse network busy errors.
I wouldnt worry about the radio version it sounds like a network issue. Have enabled 3G on it??

I have (and thanks btw - it was your guides that I followed attempting the flash last night). The thing is, a good friend of mine has the same phone, in the same area - and he doesn't get these issues. My other half is also on T-Mobile, but uses a Sony Ericsson and doesn't have any problems with coverage. I'm in a city centre right now, and my house isn't far out - we both have decent reception there.
In fact - an interesting thing just happened (literally..) - I have my phone on a charging cradle, and it had been dormant for a while, so the screen was off. It woke up, as if about to receive a call or text, but then nothing happened... so I called myself from my office phone - and it connected ok.
About 5 minutes later my girlfriend called me up on the mobile, and I mentioned the issue was still there - and she said 'yeah, i tried to call you about 5 minutes ago'.... so it's like the call was received (i.e. the phone new about it), but it didn't complete the process.
I had thought a new radio version might help (from my very limited understanding of such matters) - are you saying that's not the case?
Does 3G affect this too? What can I do - I use the internet more than anything else on my phone....
Thanks
does anyone have any further advice on this?
Mr Vanx? Anyone??
My phone is still randomly losing signal - generally not accepting incoming calls (though today it was not accepting calls, whilst I was still able to make them...). I think I may go and get it replaced by T-Mobile - but I have upgraded the radio to 1.47.30.10, and have put HardSPL 2.10 onto it.
I guess I need to downgrade to original versions, but I can't seem to find a guide which tells me if what I want to do is OK (and how...).
Please - can anyone assist - I believe my original radio rom was 1.05.05.00, and the SPL version was 1.01.
I'm using 1.54.30.10 and it's fine. I found 1.54.00.10 pretty good as well. Much fewer dropped calls comparing to any 1.4x RadioROMs. Signal strenght is also better. The only thing I cannot comment on is the battery life, as I charge the phone every night whether it's 90% or 10%.

did you have the same problems as me? - phone appearing to have a signal but calls being diverted to voicemail... seemingly randomly...
Use GSM mode as default
I have the exact same problem (I travel between Birmingham and London mainly) on my Vario II. It is really fustrating and my wife seems to think I dont answer her calls/txts on purpose(!)
On mine, the problem is due to the 3G mode - when I turn OFF 3G and use normal GSM the problem goes away. I get all calls/txt and internet connections sucessfully. When I turn on 3G the problem comes back - lost calls and unsucessfull internet connections. When in 3G mode sometimes it works somtimes it doesnt
Someone mentioned it could be that it is not switching between 3G and GSM automatically when no 3G is available. However, it happens even when in a good strong 3G area.
I swear this problem did not happen in the early part of my contract but only recently. One theory is that TMobile has sold so many 3G devices now both monthly and pay-as-you-go (esp 3G Data Modems with users using the network for their laptops) that the TMobile cells are just getting overloaded. Also, it could be that TMobile are also doing an upgrade of the 3G network and it is causing problems for users.
So what I do is run the phone in GSM mode as default (so no missed calls/txt and use Opera Mini for quick web surfing works well in GSM mode) Then switch on 3G mode if I am going to do any web surfing for more then 5 mins.
The added side benefit is also much much better battery life in GSM mode (3G soaks up the juice very quickly). I never use video calls ect so no loss there.
My Comm Manager has a toggle for 3G/GSM mode so I use that to quickly change between the 2 modes.
In Summary I would rather have a reliable phone for recieving/making calls then one which is hit and miss.
btw, Im now due an upgrade - wondering if I should stay with TMobile or not...
We appear to have the same phone 'lives'!

Ditto - im due for upgrade in March, and had been looking at the Vario iii - but am now wondering if I should be looking at another network? Is this a consistent problem with all 3G devices on T-Mobile - or does it just affect the Vario ii?

I signed up in Sep 06 and there was no problem with 3G mode then (problem free for the first 12 months at least).
From your phone internet rowser goto http://mini.opera.com/ and click on Download Opera Mini (this is latest version 4).
Before you do this make sure you have Esmertec Jbed midlet manager installed (Opera Mini is a Java App).
I use Opera Mini 90% of the time and its still renders fast on a GSM connection.
Ive uploaded the CABs for you for the Midlet Manager and Comm Manager.
I dont know if it only affects the VarioII maybe others can comment. If its a network issue then I would expect it affecting other devices also.
I want to go for the HTC Touch Dual (aka MDA Touch Plus on TMobile) as my next phone but may go with Orange if it is a network issue. Only reason I stay with TMobile is for the 'unlimited' web'n walk tarrif..but if I can't use 3G realiably then what is the point?

Thanks very much for loading this stuff...
my other half is after the touch plus too - but have advised her to do some research before committing to T-Mob again.... though if she gets it and it's ok, i'll post some feedback on here...
Cheers
The Touch Plus is a good phone if you can live without Wifi...Ive read somewhere that this problem is dependant on the area you are in ...in particular the TMobile cell tower servicing the area you are in and it is possible to phone TMobile tech support to get an engineer to investigate and correct the problem. In my case that would be my home address and my work address - maybe worth a try?
Just to add my 2p worth... my radio is 1.05.05.00 (came on the phone, which was a replacement for the first which had the screen drift)... I've had occasional times when the phone's lit up but nothing's happened, but I usually chalk that down to the phone doing an activesync check for push mail, and as there's nothing there, it goes back to sleep.
To my knowledge, I've not really missed any calls or anything like that since way back last year - when sometimes I'd be sitting in the same café as a mate also on T-Mobile, and we'd do the you-call-me-i-call-you thing to get each others' numbers - and it'd go straight to voicemail! That was quite amusing.
Nobody's told me that they've had problems trying to reach me on my mobile though for a fair while now, so I'd almost completely forgotten about this problem!
edit: yay, 500th post! Took a while but got there eventually... Anybody want to sponsor me with a free Kaiser?

Hi, I confess I haven't read the thread in great deal (am in a rush and am just passing through!) but you could try this official T-Mobile UK ROM. It's Windows Mobile6 and Radio 1.50.xxx (as far as I remember). The main thing is that it's official, and includes their latest sanctioned bootloaders etc. I flashed it to mine before taking back for warranty (as it's not possible to go back to the old 1.05 radio from recent unauthorised versions).
T-Mobile UK WM6 complete MDA Vario II ROM:
http://member.htc.com/ruudownload/t-mobile/TMobileWM6Step1-TMuk.aspx
sim
:O when did that become available? I swore to myself I'd keep an eye on the TM phone downloads site because I knew WM6 was available for some devices, but I completely forgot and since then they've rolled out WM6 for my phone... Which is a proper pain, but at the same time a really nice surprise.
Hard reset your device, install ALL applications on the phone (nothing on the micro SD - except outlook attachments). This should solve the problem.

you should check and find its at http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=Hermes_ExtractedRadioRoms
There are a few thread's already on the site about signal problems with the X1 however many are quite old and I thought a specific one with a (so far so good) solution would be welcomed.
Many people have had problems with their signal being lost or being poor and there are posts on the Vodafone forums, here, as well as many other sites and many suggest they have contacted SE without much success. Mine got so bad I was ready to give up the phone and go to N97.
I had some advice from someone at a local friendly phone store about what may be the problem and he suggested (to stop me claiming on my insurance I'm sure) changing the connection settings so it only looks at GSM.....
.....I did this three days ago and since I have had no loss of signal and my signal strength has been better than ever.
To do this:
Start > settings > comm manager > settings > phone > band
Select your network type : GSM
Not sure of the significance of this change (from auto) but its worked wonders for me
Phone:
O2 UK, R3A, xperiatweak, mms changes, Dashwire, advanced config, spb galore
Good luck and I hope this works for you (let me know how it goes)
Found the same problem when I first received the phone, I too changed the band to GSM, mainly to save battery usage as 3G wasn't needed and noticed the signal is A LOT stronger...
Not noticed any downsides to disabling 3G either as my internet browsing is still very fast using Opera Mini.
maybe a stupid question: with 3g disabled, can the phone still lock in HSDPA?
i dont think so
in theory when its connected to 3g it should still have a gsm link as backup to switch to if there is a problem
still working
A week in now and the signal is still without problems and I've found the battery life of the phone is at its longest since I got the phone at the end of last year
In answer to other posts - I've remained connected to O2 UK Mobile WEb (GPRS, 3G) despite selecting GSM only
This is useful only if you don't need 3G or 3.5G... If your 3G coverage is ok, there is no trouble either... There is a huge change depending your operator and your location
i did this for a couple days and had to switch back. i've NEVER been able to connect to 3g (i have an X1i in america where the X1a is sold), but upon applying this change of setting i couldn't get HSDPA anymore and all my internet/data activities was like creeping death. i could only connect to Edge, which is practically unusable

lol are you kidding? when i'm on edge i might as well be tapping morse code across two cans with a string between them. everytime i pull up google maps on edge i might as well pay a homeless guy to steal me map pages, it would take a lot less time..... HSDPA is the complete opposite for me, everything loads almost instantly
Hi everyone,
I have an omnia 7 on contract with Optus here in Australia. I have had it for a few days now and I've found the data connection to be very patchy, even though I have full reception where I live.
I have noticed the connection icon switching between 3G and 3G+ pretty much constantly when I'm using it.
This is basically what is happening as I try it at the moment:
- Icon says 3G.
- Tried to load the Optus website and the icon changed to 3G+ and the progress bar is just hanging there, wont go any further.
- Icon has changed back to 3G, still hanging.
- Try to load again, now it has changed to 3G+ and the site loaded.
- Icon has changed back to 3G.
- Clicked a link on the website and the icon changed to 3G+, page loaded fine.
- Icon changed back to 3G.
- Tried to load the facebook app, "Unable to connect to Facebook. Please try again later.
- Trying to load optuszoo.com.au again, icon says 3G.. just hanging there again.
- Icon has changed to 3G+, still hanging.
- Icon has changed to 3G, still hanging.
Could this be a fault with my phone? I'm in an area of strong reception, it shouldn't have a problem getting a steady 3G+ connection (I used to have a HTC Diamond which always had a strong HSDPA signal). I can only guess that every time it switches from 3G to 3G+ it loses the connection, which stops things from loading & syncing. Is there anything I can try here before I take it back to the store? I do not have the new firmware, and don't particularly want to try messing with it if I have to return it.
Every Omnia 7 has this problem (as far as I'm aware). It's a connectivity bug with Windows Phone, hopefully it will get sorted in the coming update.

I can only guess that every time it switches from 3G to 3G+ it loses the connection, which stops things from loading & syncing. Is there anything I can try here before I take it back to the store? I do not have the new firmware, and don't particularly want to try messing with it if I have to return it.

I've got the same phone and on the same carrier and I can't say I have experienced these problems. I've had my phone since october last year and its been working flawlessly when there's a good signal.
When it switches between 3G and 3G+(H), it usually just means the download speed is varying between those 2 standards (i think 3G = about 3Mbits/s, and 3G+/H is about 7Mbits/s).
Only thing I can suggest is turn off your phone, make sure your sim is inserted properly as well as battery, and turn it back on.
If you were on a different carrier with your old HTC, it might be Optus' coverage.

I was on Optus previously, I dropped into the optus store yesterday and they had me on the phone with support. We tried my sim in a different phone and determined it's my handset that is the problem. As the poster above you mentioned, it's probably a firmware issue... but I'm not going to risk waiting for the new firmware to come out because I only have another week to be able to get a replacement.
Had such issues but after I changed my Provider my 3G+ signal ist stable.
Hour handset is being 'elevated' to HSDPA when your using your connection.
When its idle, it will drop back to 'standard'
My handset does this, but i am not getting the data issues your experiencing.
In addition, both my old HTC handsets used to do this, tho the icon actually showed [H] for HSDPA (Windows Mobile 6.1 and 6.5)
Hard reset your Omnia And/Or send it off for repair/replace
(I am with Optus too)
I'm having the same problem.
I've got a Samsung Galaxy s on Optus.
Constantly changes from 3G to HSDPA, looses connection every time, very hard to use apps that use the Internet.
Seem's to be an optus problem as this is happening with different types of handsets.
Maybe an option where you can select 3G or HSDPA only is needed, they have a GPRS or 3G only option so i don't see why they cant have this aswell.

Yep I ended up taking it back and getting a replacement, but the replacement has the same problem... so it's either software related or network related.
I can confirm this issue too.
It's REALLY annoying.
Is there any temporary fix? I hate this device for the most part, but I love WP7.
I have less problems when I have the phone's sync set to hourly, then it happens maybe once a month that I can't connect with data.
When I had de sync set to manual I almost daily had to reset the phone to get the data connection back, now its on hourly sync again and no problems in the past week..

I have the exact same issue with my HTC Mozart. The signal constantly keeps changing between 3G and HSDPA when I'm in an area that has stable strong reception.
This causes the same DNS issues as stated in IE in which websites fail to load until you refresh them a number of times.
To me it appears that its an issue with IE and the way WP7 calculates and handles the signal. Can anyone confirm if Microsoft have confirmed that there are issues with IE and the signal and when this will be fixed?
I don't know if in my case it's related to the same problem, but on my operator's network it's mostly E and 3G.
After a few times of checking my email, getting the People Hub updated or surfing once in a while, I don't get a connection anymore, except when connecting via wifi.
This is a very annoying problem and the only way to get it back is turning the device off and on daily basis, sometimes even a few times a day D:
I have the same issue ever since I updated the firmware. At first I thought that it is broken internally but it seems to be a universal problem.
Firmware: 2424.11.2.3
Radio: 2424.11.2.2
bootloader:5.2.1.4
Does anybody want to escalate this issue to MS and Samsung? (I understand that several countries are reporting this)
Same problem - HTC One X on Optus.
My phone seems to spend most of its time deciding whether to use 3G or HSDPA, during which time my webpage downloads stop, I can't connect to facebook ("Connection lost - tap to retry"), I can't search Google, etc. etc.
I wouldn't mind if it got on with the job in the meantime, but while it's flicking backwards & forwards between networks I can't seem to get any data down (or up).
Really, really, really annoying. I didn't notice it on Telstra, but I had a different phone (HTC Desire). From the looks of this thread though it's network-related, not phone-related.
Does anybody have problem while calling someone, and when line establishes, there is only silence and dropped call. I had that problem, and I solved it by forcing phone to use only 3G. To do this, go to Diagnosis, and enter *#2263#, then if you want only 3G enter ''WCDMA Band Preference'' - ''WDCMA All'', or for EDGE ''GSM Band Preference'' - ''GSM All''. Automatic speaks for itself. I use 3G all the time, and no more dropped calls. Maybe this could help with 3G -> 3G+ shifting. Only downside is that when there is no 3G signal, you wont get signal at all.

Same problem, and this give it to me lots of problems with the battery...
If you love WP7, you should see WP10.
