I'm moving house at the end of the month, and will be getting a line installed in my room.
The house does have wireless I can use in the meantime, but I don't have a wifi card for my pc, nor do I wish to waste money on one.
Seeing as my wizard can connect to wifi, could I use it to connect my pc to the house network and browse etc via usb/activesync/3rd party apps?
Cheers
1, welcome to xda-dev
2, please follow my articles. In one of them, I've explained why this isn't possible. See http://www.pocketpcmag.com/blogs/index.php?blog=3&p=453&more=1&c=1&tb=1&pb=1 . All you can do is access the Web through your PDA if you use my HTTP proxy.

Hi all. I've connected the xda (with WLAN card) to an adhoc net at home and was able to browse the net/connect around (via broadband through a gateway comp). Now I want to hook it up with a laptop (doesn't have wifi) as a wireless adapter. How exactly do I connect the two? Is it by "wireless modem"? Any pointers appreciated. Thanks.
Yep,
You need the driver & usbmodem_dialer. Lucky you I uploaded it a week ago to the ftp under usb_modem. It contains the inf for the laptop, the dialer & a document with the steps to follow

Hi. Thanks for the advice. But I'm not trying to dial GPRS as internet in the PPC is already provided by the SD WLAN card. I'm trying to connect the laptop w/ the PPC so that it can use the internet in the adhoc network. Can it work in the setup? Also, Im assuming that the "wireless modem" software in PPC has to be running? Thanks!
Just follow the document, including the start of the wireless modem program. I think it will work with wifi as well, haven't got a wifi card yet. Maybe Santa can arrange one.
Cheers, M
Well, I tried that and it didn't work. Error 777 or something. Can't connect. Thanks anyway. Seems that the whole thing is suited for GPRS connections. Tried several times on my laptop but it timed out.
Take a good look at the modem init-string. Sometimes I've to add a ,0
Done that (just add ,0 to the end of APN in the extra strings?) but still no go. I'm really confused now. Queried the modem and it seemed to respond just fine. As I'm not going to use the GPRS at all, what should I put in username, password and APN? Also, what about "preset GPRS" in wireless modem? Thanks.
Frankly I don't know, I'm a gprs user and hoped this could solve your problem. Maybe it's only for gprs usage. APN & user/password are usually for gprs & I only had errors in 600 range.
Regards, M
Well, seems that I've hit a brick wall here. Thanks for all the help anyway.
im still with you sekinoss - this woud be a cool thing to do.
As a semi literate PC user I get to go to a lot of poeples places and sort their pc problems (for my sins!)
I've a friend who isnt internet savvy and has a wireless setup for his wifes laptop downstairs and his own pc connecteed to a modem(!) upstairs. Hes non intenet savvy and I want to get windows updates etc for him for the upstairs pc which is generally not net connected. I'd love to just take my PPC there with a usb lead and use it to get him on broadband wireless upstairs and update his windows machine properly. (He usually doesnt bother with the windows updates as they 'take too long' on a modem. Hmm.) Surely this would be a cool use of the PPC - I can't understand that there seems to be no software/method to do this sort of thing.
Ah well! :?:
Hi folks, seeing as I have just obtained a wizard (o2 XDA mini), I thought I'd have a snoop around and join a forum or two.
The thread question is this:
I have a laptop, it has no built in connectivity.
I have the wizard, it has wi-fi and bluetooth.
Would it be possible to connect my laptop via bluetooth to the wizard which would then allow me to access wireless internet?
I have searched on here and found the same sort of question but with no replies.
I don't know what software, if any, is available to do this but surely it must be possible. I know I could browse with the wizard but if I could get the wi-fi data out via bluetooth, it would be great.
Thanks peeps, great forum. I have learnt quite alot already and I've only had the pda a couple of days.
Anybody???
I don't know about bluetooth connectivity between the wizard and the the laptop, for one you will need to get a Bluetooth adapter/dongle for your laptop to connect to the wizard.
However you can use the wizard linked via usb to laptop and use the Edge/GPRS to surf on the laptop. That's called tethering. And i'm sure there's a How to FAQ somewhere on here or over at HowardForums.

Yeah, tethering is one solution. I am a coach driver and as such have long boring days of doing asically nothing. I have upgraded from a Nokia 7610 which I used to connect to my laptop via a BT dingle and use the GPRS modem that way.
The main point is that GPRS is expensive and if I can find a Wi-Fi AP, could I connect to the net through that in the same way that I would use the GPRS connection.
Not sure where you're going Jerry. Wouldn't it be simpler if Wi Fi is available to get a USB or PCMCIA WiFi card for the laptop?
I suppose it would. It was just a thought as in 'If I can do it, why spend more money?'
Then again, PCMCIA Wi-Fi cards a cheap enough I suppose.
 Anything for free
i assume this is possible but can't work out how. i'm a PPC novice. basically want to browse the file systems of my LAN at home via WiFi - vario is connected and can surf the internet via wiFi, i have two XP boxes and a Linux box, all of which are networked and can see each other etc. and i can see them and browse files via my CE.net machine. so what do i need to cnfigure in order to browse from my vario?
any help gratefully received
Al
Hi, there's probably an expert way to do it (but I ain't one) so I used this prog :-
http://www.vmobilesoftware.com/NetworkBrowser.htm
to map my network shares - the network drives seem to stay visible once the trial period is up by the way

I'm buying a TV with an ethernet port which has the feature of streaming via the net. Can I tether my phone to my PC and have the TV pull a signal from my PC using my phone as a modem? How would one do this?
Thanks!
this could be done using a pc and internet connection sharing or a cradlepoint router.
however, it will also be a great way to burn so much data usage to get your account suspended, warned or charged for overage.
Ive used massive amounts of data without being warned. In fact,Ive ran bit torrent. There is no way that I have not gone over the limit some month using the phone as my primary internet connection.
Im not entirely sure what the OP is asking, but here is what I know. You can use your phone as an internet connection in several ways. The easiest is using a hack to connect via USB or bluetooth. I have found this to be very unreliable. You can use a third party program to do the same thing as well. I use a program called PDA net which works much more reliably. You can also use hacks or third party programs to connect via wifi.
Your phone will provide a connection similar to slower DSL lines. You can expect 800-1200k downloads and 150-300k downloads (your millage may vary here, but that's what I have gotten in Ohio and Utah)
If you want to connect to an ethernet device there are a few options. You can use programs allow your phone to share over wifi and create an adhoc network. You can also connect your phone to an access point and then configure your network devices default gateways to point to the phone instead of the access point.
Good Morning all. I have searched for days, not only this site, but many others, and as of yet, no appropriate solution. Hopefully someone more versed than me with the Wizard might help.
Here is the scenario....I am able to connect my HTC Wizard to the WiFi of my roommates router. He is connected to DSL 3.5 Mbps. On the Wizard I can surf the internet, no problem. I have a computer in my room, but it does not have a wifi card. I am wanting to use my Wizard to connect my computer to the internet via USB, using the connection (WiFi) that exists on my Wizard.
So far, I can connect to my computer through active sync and browse the files on my Wizard. I also am able to tether my Wizard to my computer via Internet Sharing on my EDGE connection. I do notice when I connect my Wizard that is connected to WiFi it shows a LAN connection in the taskbar at bottom right, however, when i try to navigate to any web page in internet explorer, google chrome, or firefox, it comes up with the error like I am not connected.
I know there is a simple fix for this, but I am frustrated and tired of searching to no avail. Thanks in advance many times over.
