I've found instructions on their site, and various other places, but no joy. I can make GPRS connections and send/receive SMS just fine, but MMS simply times out.
mms setting tmobile usa
i might be able to help ill post tomorrow with the settings
T-Mobile MMS
First... In order for you to receive MMS messages, your GPRS has to be connected to wap.voicestream.com
2nd in your MMS application you need to point the MMS application to use the wap.voicestream.com profile.
3rd. The gateway address is listed as 216.155.165.050 well.. I'm here to tell you .. that leading 0 messes everything up, just get rid of it and use 216.155.165.50 instead.
This should get you connected.
Brandon
I'm unable to connect to wap.voicestream.com, so it seems I need to get them to authorize it...
What is the server address to put in the MMS settings? I have:
http://216.155.174.84/servlets/mms
Authorize
Yeah.. Have them set you up and let them know that you have a device that uses Picture Messaging.
Well, that works if I manually connect to the WAP gateway and set the MMS software to use "The internet" as the connection. Thanks!
Any ideas on how to make it auto-dial the WAP connection when it needs to, so I can leave the normal gateway as the internet default? Otherwise I have to switch it manually every time I want to use the VPN.
With these settings, it's still not working for me. What should I put for the port number?
Use port 9201
Are any of you getting free internet anymore? I stopped using my phone for a while, but I haven't gotten free internet in a while and its buggine me. Someone suggested signing up for t-zones and then using wap.voicestream.com, but I don;t want to waste the money unless I have to. Thanks.
Port 9201 worked! Thanks, imagine_einstein!!
Hi all,
I've googled and found several settings for Vodafone Japan and only one combination works.
BUT I don't know what data service it is using and at what cost to me.
I'd like to know the Vodafone Japan settings for my TyTN (and possibly Vodafone Live!, but I hear it's a closely guarded secret...)
What I have been using (found on the net) is
Acess Point: vodafone (if I use *99# it doesn't work)
username: [email protected] or [email protected] (they both work)
pass: vodafone (for both)
DNS settings: 143.90.130.23, 143.90.130.39 or 61.195.195.153, 61.195.194.26 (without the DNS, it doesn't work.
Anyone have more exact info? and the info for MMS settings?
Anyhelp would be appreciated. Thanks.
I've also called Vodafone Japan's customer service and they give me the brochure info at using *99# but that doesn't work for me on the TyTN.
TyTn in Japan
I am using the same acess point as you mentioned.. My first bill was incredilbly expensive! I called vodafone and after they finally started to understand what I need, they gave me this "super happy packet" deal. Now its about 80-90% cheaper than my old plan.
I would still like to send text messages to japanese phones here.. but havent figured out a way.. have you?
-J
If you choose "Cellular Line (GPRS, 3G)" as a modem type, I remember you can only type "vodafone" as access point name.
[email protected] is for 64K digital connection (charged by minute)
[email protected] is for packet connection (charged by packet)
DNS setting is not necessary.
These plans are only for packet connections (you cannot use your ppc as a telephone with these plans), but they are relatively cheap.

Also, I guess this is what you are looking for.
http://www.gaijinpot.com/bb/showthread.php?p=214706
Thanks qtotter, unfortunately those settings didn't seem to work for me.
Nakame: I haven't yet found a way to do that. I can only send SMS and it seems to only work to Vodafone customers. There was a post somewhere on the net about Vodafone Live service, but the site was in Spanish. Apparently you can get Vodafone live on the Hermes, when you buy the fone in the UK with Vodafone (and by the looks of it in Spain too) So why wouldn't they have that available for us here in Japan??
Oh well, I'll keep plugging away of settings and combos to see what works.
If anything is progressing, I'll let you know.
Hi isamu,
First of all, You might need an information of access point of Vodafone JP for using WAP and MMS.
(not below access point)
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
>>Acess Point: vodafone (if I use *99# it doesn't work)
>>username: [email protected] or [email protected] (they both work)
>>pass: vodafone (for both)
>>DNS settings: 143.90.130.23, 143.90.130.39 or 61.195.195.153, >>61.195.194.26 (without the DNS, it doesn't work.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
also, need to contract 'Vodafone Live!' option. (315Yens/Month)
but, They has only accepted to use the WAP & MMS access points for their selling mobile phones. so officially there is no way to send MMS from PDAs. officially....
cheers,
tom
Thanks for the offical answer... any idea about the unoffical one??...
thanks for your time.

I have tried this and everytime I try and connect it gives me a error saying "No modem at this number" is there something I am missing here? Thanks

Thanks for the details I will try this once I enable my phone to have vodafone live, do you have the correct settings for connecting to the packet data network? I want to use my notebook to connect to the internet using my mobile phone.
Roca, thanks for the information.
Would these settings allow me to use the text message services here in Japan? (keitai to keitai) Or are these setting just to connect to the internet?
Thanks in advance

Hi, all.
no need setting for text messages(SMS).
if you want use WAP(Vodafone Live/Yahoo Keitai) and MMS, use setting that I showed. But, you can not use nomaly Internet Access.
But, you shuld change Brawser and MMS-Client's User-Agent!
ex) Vodafone/1.0/V703SH/SHJ001
and MMS cannot be likely to be received...um..
if you want to connect to internet, use setting thst maro showd.
but very expensive, careful!
so there is no way to use internet and mms with WM5? or smartphone. If use will be expensive?

Softbank officially says that the X0 does not work with MMS. But obviously there is a work around? With "re-sender" or something Can somebody shed light on this?
chainbolt,
To use softbank MMS with Hermes, there are two ways:
(1) Use Palm Messaging App
(2) Use MMS Composer and MMS Resender
(1) solution does not seem work on X01HT (it works almost fine on TyTN). on TyTN, approx 20% of messages causes the Palm Messaging App to crash, so it is really annoying.
(2) solutions require two software, MMS Composer and MMS Resender. The latter is available on the Internet, but MMS Composer is a proprietary software and it may be hard for X01HT users to find one. TyTN has the one pre-installed. Basically, softbank's MMS system uses some sort of non-standard MMS notification messages and MMS Composer can not understand them, thus generating error. Somehow, requesting softbank to re-send MMS notifications for the messages remaining on their MMS server cause the MMS system to send standard MMS notifications that MMS Composer can understand, and this time, it can retrieve MMS messages from the MMS server without a problem.
MMS Resender basically does this trick - when MMS Composer displays "MMS notification error", it finds the message box, clears it and access the softbank "MMS notification re-send" page http://mail/ to request resending of all MMS nofitications. With these new notifications MMS Composer now auto-downloads all MMS messages.

Many thanks!
I have an O2 Trion that I use in Japan with a WWE ROM (1.35) and a Softbank SIM card. This ROM has MMS Composer included. I also installed the Re-sender. But nothing works. Whenever I launch the re-sender, it says "connection error". I can also not receive or send SMS. The phone is of course working, and I can also work with POP3 e-mail accounts.
But the problem/lack of SMS and MMS is really annoying. I guess my settings are wrong. Do you know the Softbank settings for SMS and MMS?
Chainbolt,
Yes you need the correct connection settings for the Softbank.
Here's the (complex) complete settings - one for MMS+Phone browser, another for Internet access. Call it MMS Settings and Open Settings, and costs are different. It's a bit difficult to explain (Softbank Japanese plans are one of the most complex rate plans in the world), but I'll try.
You SHOULD use MMS Settings for MMS.
You CAN use MMS Settings for the web, but in this case you have to use the proxy in MMS Settings AND you need to set the browser User Agent to one of the Softbank phones available. See below for the list of User Agents. This proxy allows up to 300KB per page.
http://developers.softbankmobile.co.jp/dp/tech_svc/info/useragent.php
While you use MMS Settings, you will be charged 0.2yen/packet. You can apply for the Unlimited Packets (Pake-shi-Hoodai in Japanese) Plan for 4410yen per month.
You CAN use Open Settings for the web, this will allow you to use HTTP, HTTPS, ActiveSync and other protocols freely. This settings can also be used from your PC, meaning unlimited Internet Access. You can use any User Agent - so you can use PIE with this connection.
This Open Settings is said to become unavailable from 4/1, as the password is now known to public and Softbank does not want people to use it from the PC.
The cost for using Open Settings is still unclear, but it will be 1029yen - 10290yen per month. Enjoy!

Thank you so much for that!
I am just through the entire process of flashing first a German ROM (O2), then an English one (HCT), and now trying the Japanese one from Softbank, always with downgrading the booloader - but I never made MMS or SMS working so far. I will try the settings from above to the letter. I am aware about the April 1 "issue".

Thanks for this. However, it still does not work entirely (although it worked a little!)
Here are my problems:
I changed all the settings for MMS usage as shown below. However, it still does not work entirely.
Sending: First, I tried to send a test message, but it just sits in my email "outbox". The "send/receive" button is gray, so I cannot use that. The system periodically tries to connect to the network to send the message (the icons indicate when it is doing so), but it fails, so it ends up just sitting in my "outbox" with a little clock icon on the side.
Receiving: I keep getting error messages on my phone now (presumeably when I receive a message) that just say "Forbidden". I actually received the headers for five (of a total approximately thirty on the Softbank server) messages, too. However, when I try to download the messages, my phone connects to the network but then nothing happens. I do not get additional error messages. Just nothing happens.
Any suggestions?
Thanks.
I believe they've changed some of the settings since then. Have you followed any of the other guides for how to do this here?
Help! - Has anyone else transferred their O2 xda Exec to Vodafone, or does anyone have a V1640 that they can check the settings for MMS with me?
I've changed over to voda, have loads of apps installed. Vodafone's business help line seem blissfully unaware of the extra settings inside the Messaging App on WM5 for MMS config.
Normal internet connectivity is ok, but at the moment I can't seem to download any new MMS messages. They arrive in the inbox and the size shows up, but I just can't download.
For the Connection details - Stangely, using the dedicated IP that the support team provided for the IP address of 212.183.137.012 doesnt work, when its on IP address is provided, it does try and access messages, but just can't download them.
Its got to a stage now, where they seem unwilling to help because its "not a handset they provide" despite me explaining that its the same mobile OS as dozens of other handsets and the settings will be exactly the same as on any WM5 based device.
The settings they can't seem to help with are those inside the messaging app on the menu "MMS Configuration" (see below)

Can anyone help, its been several days now and its really annoying me!
Annoying, but here's how
Hi Derek,
I just got this working again after having the same problem as you. Here is my setup (based on WM6 on an O2 XDA Exec running on Vodafone) - and the trick you need to know is at the end:
Settings -> Connections, I created a new modem connection called "Vodafone MMS & Data" of type "Cellular line (GPRS, 3G)". Under this setting, I have created two connections, one called "3g data" and one called "3g Wap Connection".
"3g data" is set up with access point "internet", username "internet", and password (I think) also "internet"
"3g Wap connection" is set up with access point "wap.vodafone.co.uk", username "wap" and password "wap".
OK, so you have a connection with two options set up as a result of this. For 99% of your day-to-day browsing, you just leave the connection set to use "3g data" by default, but when you get the notification of an MMS message, disconnect any existing online session and then go in and select the "3g Wap connection" option, then tap-and-hold and select Connect. Once you're online with the Wap connection you can then go and download your MMS message.
Hope this helps,
Darren
Here's what to do
In Settings/Connections/Connections you should have one connection set up under My ISP for internet access:
Name: VF Web (or whatever)
Select a modem: Cellular Line (GPRS, 3G)
Access point name: internet
user name: web
password: web
You should also have one connection set up under My Work Network:
Name: VF MMS (or whatever)
Select a modem: Cellular Line (GPRS, 3G)
Access point name: wap.vodafone.co.uk
user name: wap
password: wap
Finally set up your MMS configuration to Connect via: My Work Network
That's how to link internet and MMS to the two separate connections.

I did indeed notice the date of the thread. However the advice given here was not the best solution. I was trying to set up MMS on my O2 Exec on a Vodafone sim for the first time a few days ago, and couldn't find a complete and proper solution anywhere. Thankfully I managed to work it out and posted it here in case it helps others. The Universal and WM5 are both still alive and kicking.
Thats ok mate, just joking
Thanks for your comment
After setting up access to my Gmail account through the native email tool, when I do a send/receive, I get and error saying:
"Cannot connect with current connection settings. To change your connection settings, tap Settings. etc..."
The only time I can do a successful send/receive is when my X1 is connected to my laptop - then I get all my emails. I have already appplied Windows Mobile 6.1 Hot Fix for Sending POP and IMAP E-mail.
I suspect some settings might be wrong - everything else is working fine. Am even getting 3G in SoCal using AT&T on MediatNet. My settings are as follows:
Access point name: wap.cingular
Domain: <blank>
Proxy Setting
Proxy Server: wireless.cingular.com
HTTP: wireless.cingular.com:80
WAP: <blank>
Secure WAP: <blank>
Socks: localhost:1080
Could anyone help? Thanks in advance.
almost certainly its because you are using a WAP connection.
I've never been able to use POP or SMTP on any phone through a WAP connection.
Try using the APN for cingular full internet
a quick google comes up with:-
APN: isp.cingular
User: [email protected]
Pass: CINGULAR1
but don't quote me, and you may need to check with cingular whether they need to change something their end to enable you to use that APN
Im pretty new to email on my phone but i had the same problem i.e. if i was on wireless i could get mail but if i connected via gprs i would get the same error, can not connect etc, i had to set up and new account with the same details as the account which would send and recieve via wirless and tell it to connect via t-mobile internet as there wasnt an auto option, so i now have two accounts for the same email one accesses via the internet and one via t-mobile internet, you can change this if you edit account setup.
Not sure if this is your problem or if i have read it wrong.
Hope this helps
Hi Masseur,
Thanks for the pointer. I did try but looks like it made no difference. Not sure what's wrong from my settings.
Anyone else has seen this? Would appreciate any help. Thanks.
Folks,
Someone in another forum pointed me to the solution. As it turn out, gmail doesn't work off proxys with AT&T. The automatic setup for AT&T had the proxy checked. All was needed is to take out the proxy and just keep the http settings. Working now!
