I could see my program files directory on my sd card after I have flashed the new rom. All the program files were still there... I have made a shortcut with file explorer in windows/start/programs... And vupti.... I have fx tcmp without a new installation... and still a lot of free memory... Ok, this can maybe not uses for every program, but I could use this trick for all my programs, but not netfront : (
Luckilly there's a lot of programs that will work with this (not so new) tip
For example : Tomtom Navigator, Regedit...

I noticed that whenever I install stuff to the SD card or the main memory, the application file is placed under the Start/Programs Folder. Now I am pretty sure it is a pain to browse the entire Programs folder if for example we need to use the Zip utility application which is found at the very end.
Now my question is: "Can we create a classification sub-folder to sort things out in the "Start/Program Folder" and not worry about messing some functionality of the application?
Is it OK to just cut and paste, for example the Zip application file under Start/Programs folder and paste it inside the newly created Start/Programs/Utilities sub-folder?
Any other ideas as to how to sort applications in the Programs Folder?
Hi cktlcmd,
You can manipulate you 'Start/Programs' by browsing to Windows/startmenu/programs with File Explorer (or Total Commander or Resco, etc.). You can create new subfolders there and cut (or copy) and paste the links to each program to whichever folder you desire. BTW, these are links (.lnk files) not the applications (.exe files). For example, you cold put the Zip utility .lnk file under Windows/startmenu/programs/Utilities.
Also, sometimes you need to make your own links for programs that don't generate their own. You can't do it in file explorer on your PDA. The easiest way is to use your PC through ActiveSync to create shortcuts just like you would in PC Windows. (Resco also works, Total Commander?)
Another idea, though, (which I use) is to invest in a launcher program for your Today screen such as iLauncher by SBSH or Spb Pocket plus. Much more convenient IMHO.
Boinger
Hi Boinger,
Thanks for the reply. I am afraid that a launcher would just slow this lovely puppy down. Right now, these are installed in my internal memory: Pocket Mechanic, MemMaid, and Handy Menu. So far, no slow downs, and I like the way they interact. Most of my programs are installed in my card.
I'll try it right now. Thanks again.
Hi,
i want to install the programs to a directory on the mmc card.
But if i do so, it installs in the root.
Now, thats not looking nice, and its hard to find anything there then.
I want create a directory for games and programms on the card.
How can i do that?
I can only choose between, Memory Card, Storage and Main Memory.
And that sucks!
Maybe u can user WinCE CAB Manager and edit the *.cab installation directory to any directory u prefer.
You can use the freeware CabInstall and install program directly from the SD.
Yes, but on the on hand this would be a lot of work, changing every single files directory in the cab and on the other hand it wouldn´t work out with Progs, that have an exe intallation, like the game AoE.
Thos Progs, first install on the PC and then on the PPC, and there are no editable CABs at all.
I thougt about changing the installation interface inactive sync , but i´m not a coder.
But maybe, there is somebody out there, who had the same idea like me and realised it already.
The Best solution ever: have a look at the attached files, open the TXT file first (the instructions)
You will not need any additional Software (except e Regestry editor like PHM Regedit), just follow the instructions and use the attached files.
Workes great I am having this now for 4 months!
if you install the programmes to the SD/MMC card, and they make their own folder, put the SD/MM card into a card reader on the pc and select the entire folder as hidden. this means that the programme still works, but does not show up when you explore the card. this does not work if u are using your phone as a card reader.
Sorry DerliebeWolf, The BEST solution is the follow (Tested on WM2003Se):
- Download a registry editor 4 Ur PPC
- Open AskDir_ON.reg with the program
- Reset your PPC
manually:
- Go to \HKLM\SOFTWARE\Apps\Microsoft Application Installer\fAskDest
- Change DWORD value (dec) from 0 to 1
- Reset your PPC
If you install a cab file or an exe file from the pc (that copy the cab into your ppc and then execute it), Windows Mobile will ask you in wich folder you want to install the sw.
Note that you can have problems with some applications (because they're not installed in their own directory)
Check out Nonentity's File System Tweak http://forum.xda-developers.com/vie...order=asc&highlight=file+system+tweak&start=0
Cabinstaller is the best and easy software i could recommend for this. Run the cab installer software once and set it to run for all installations, the whenever u try to install a cab file, it will prompt you for the path of installation. It also has an option to disable deleting of cab file after installation. Do you want anything more than this? and to the max, it is free ware! Its easy to get, if you can't find,I have it in my site' software section. www.cartystudios.com
oh yes, i've forget that cabinstall associes .cab files to it (and then, when you execute an exe from the pc, in the ppc will be opened always with cabinstall in auto)
They're the 2 Best Solutions
Sorry if this seems a 'dumb ass question' but I'm new to this.
I want to make the adjustments to speed up my XDA Mini S as it seems awfully slow to start programs compared to my old XDA.
I have just downloaded the registerywizard and unzipped it to my desktop but where on my device do I drop the files? in which folder?
Sorry if it seems obvious to you guys but it's not to me.
Cheers
Hi, activesync your device and you can place them anywhere on your device but most people place them in \my documents and with a file explorer on the device click on the cab and it will install reg wizard on the device. Have you got both files needed for the installation?
When you say both files, do you mean RegistryWizard_PPC.ARMV4 & OpenNETCF.SDF.wce4.armv4??
One of the things that really bugs me is my device is for ever telling me I'm running low on memory and yet program memory always has loads of space (I also have a 1Gb card) I understand that the split can be changed from 50-50 using the registry?
Cheers
Thats right both those files are needed for registry wizard to work.
There is no way you can change the memory split in wm5, that was only with wm2003 etc..
You have to find a way to free up memory - I have 25mb after a soft reset. You say program memory is always ok - thats equivalent to ram, so maybe its storage memory thats low and asking you to free up memory? Empty internet explorer cache etc...
Ok thanks for that. I have cleared the cache which freed up 0.5 mb but I still only have 4Mb of free storage space on my device storage?
The only thing I have installed is Tom Tom since I got my XDA! (the maps are on my memory card and the program on my device) so why is there so little space?
Also I have downloaded the 2 files for the registry wizard and put them on my storage card but how do you run the reg wizard as there is no exe file or set up file?
Thanks
Have a look with file explorer on the device to see what is taking space - particularly look at \program files and \my documents. Can you recall how much program memory you had out of the box? It maybe the o2 extras that are filling it up and i imagine tom tom a pretty big install.
Use the attached treesize to look at memory - tells you at a glance how much memory is in each folder. Change default byte setting to kilobytes and its easier to interprate.
If you want to get rid of the o2 extras hard reset and then just as the o2 stuff is about to install do a soft reset - you will have a leaner and quicker device.
Hi, I put the file you suggested into my mem card but again, how do you run it?
there is no exe file or set up process, if I go to it from file explorer and click on it it says"There is no application associated...." the same as I get with the registry wizard??
Sorry if this is basic to you guys but I'm confused.
Incidentally the memory info is as follows:
Storage
Total 47.46
In Use 43.00
Free 4.47
Program
Total 44.01
In Use 23.31
Free 20.70
If I was to do a Hard re-set and stop all the o2 stuff installing, will it remember all the o2 service/message centre info for texting and voice mail etc?
Cheers
Thats a self installing cab - should start installing when you click on it through file explorer on your device. If it wont you have a glitch.
Find enclosed the exe - to be run on the device.
And no you will loose all your settings so you would have to write them all down before you hard reset etc... No fear we are here
Yep you storage is really full - thats your problem
I must have a clitch of some kind then as there is no file in the download to facilitate an install, same goes for the registry wizard I guess then file I downloaded then?
For example I only have 2 files on the 'tree' file after unziping, how many should there be?
Do you have a Reg wizard info to enable me to install it?
Cheers
It's a cab file - it should not be unzipped (but you are right there should be 2 files in the cab) - click on the treesize.cab or regwiz.cab through explorer on your device. They are self installing.
Well that's odd then as there is no cab file??
I have 2 files after downloading and unziping, they are:
TREESI~1.000 and TreeSize.001
It downloads it as at winrar file on my desktop so I have to then unzip it?
is it something with a setting when I download from this forum?
Hi, does not need to be unzipped place the whole file on the device and click on it.
Thanks you for that, I was assuming because it was a winrar file I had to unzip it, now installed
However I get an error message when I try to run the registry wizard, it states "an unexpected error has occured in registry wizard.exe" (in the details it says TypeLoadExeption, could not load type OpenNetCF.Win32.RegistryKey from assembly OpenNetCF)
I have tried soft resetting but this has made no difference, any suggestions?
Sorry to be a pain here but I really do appreciate your help here
I have also now moved the Tom Tom program to my storage card and I now have 26Mb free space now.
Have you installed this opennetCF? http://forum.xda-developers.com/download.php?id=9341
Its needed for reg wizard.
Thats cool got your memory back - tom tom what a hog!
Yes, I installed both???
I have tried removing the program and re-installing and soft resetting again but still I'm getting the same error??
Now just when I thought I was sorted.... :?
Are you installing reg wizard to main memory rather than storage card?
If you are, uninstall and try over again - are you using latest version 't'?
Yes I was putting both files into my storage card, is that that wrong then?
Thanks
Install onto device not the memory card
Done that now, all is working  .... thank you for all your help Mark, it's much appreciated.
I am on WM6 now but back when I was on WM5, I remember there was a staging location for all .cab files when an application demanded to be installed on the main memory.
At the moment, I am trying to install the Windows Live Messenger beta to Storage Card but it fails when I try to do so. However when I attempt the same install to Main Memory it works fine.
I've forgotten now but in the past (WM5), the installation generates a .CAB file and puts it in a consistent location - from here, I should be able to move/run this file so as it install it on the Storage Card again...
As per this thread here, I also tried a search of My Device for all .CAB files created in the last 2 days but still nothing
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance,
BB.
Cab Temp location
\Application Data\Volatile\
you can safely delete everthing in this folder, its where cabs are expanded to be installed.
I hope this what you were looking for.
Big thanks RevAtB - that is EXACTLY what I was looking for!
Managed to free up some much-needed space in there too!
Thanks again
Hi, I have an 838pro with wm6 running on it. I have a lot of programs on the memory card that dont appear in the 'programs' bit of my pda. I was wondering if thats standard, and if so: can i change that?
Also is their any hack / program that will enable me to use the front (video calling) camera as just a usual camera?
Thanks alot, have a great day.
First of all you are posting at the wrong thread. You have a Dopod 838 pro (Hermes) & you are posting at Wizard forums.
For the programs at your storage card you find with your file browser the executable that you want to ''go'' to your programs folder, press copy & then go to My Device - Windows - Start Menu - Programs & then select paste as sortcut. You must do that to every program that you want.
For your front camera I don't know because my Wizard don't have one .-
copying the exe is a bad idea
if the exe depend on dlls or other files located in the same
dir it will not work as exe are usually much bigger then shortcuts
you make shortcuts to the program using
total commander
and if you installed the programs on the sd card before you
changed rom or changed device or something like that
they will never auto showup
much like if you installed programs on an external harddisk for your
computer and connected it to another computer new or a friends pc
they would also not show up
apart from that if they depend on settings added to the reg of the pda or computer
for that matter and you changed pda/rom or computer
you will have to reinstall them
but then not all programs add shortcuts to programs depend on how
the cab file makers made the install
