I've been a fan of wisbar dating back to PPC2002 times ... it was a useful launcher that takes up little space on screen footprint (hidden in the start menu bar, basically) as well as little in memory. It sure helps it was a freeware as well ...
However now that they've moved on to Wisbar advanced 2, the graphics and all the cosmetics have just turned it into a memory hog. It takes up ~ 3MB in space, which is bad considering even voice recognition programs like the MVC take up only 4MB. It takes way too long to load, and when it's running it's sluggish and constantly conflict with other programs (conflict with PhoneAlarm and AEButtonsPlus from my experience)
I wonder if you guys have any suggestion for a launcher alternative.
I know many here like cLauncher but I want to reserve my today screen for calender items ... so anything that take up a bulk of the today screen isn't gonna work for me....
PPX, pTask, SmallMenu Plus (my favourite).
V
Thanks ... yes I think SmallMenuPlus is the best ... I've got that one.
Quick question though ... is there any way to display the most often used appz in the first pull down menu? Meaning, when you click the start icon, it pulls down a menu that you can setup to show "Today", Recent used programs, "Program" etc etc ... and from "Program" you can expand to the 2nd pull down menu, which I can setup to include my most often used programs plus more subfolders.
What I'd like to see is to have most often used program from the first pull-down menu, together with the "Programs" folder at the same level. Does anyone know if you can do that?
Thanks,
Number16 - you can configure the drop down menu to point to any folders and links you want. It'll parse them into the menu automatically:

Speaking of SmallMenu, I've run into some serious problems and need some help
Somehow in the SmallMenuPlus setup, the "Locate programs in the menu" option was greyed out. I can't select it. I figure that's why I can't programs under the first pull-down menu.
Also, in the "Use programs under this menu" tab, it'd only select program menu's from the "Storage" root directory. I can't select and go into subfolders. If I want to select subfolders I'd have to manually type the path in.
Worse, the start menu icon would stop working after a while. Clicking on it does NOT pull down a pull down menu.
I thought it was because it has software conflict with Magic Button, which I also use, so I disabled Magic button, and later on removed it altogether when it still had problems. It still didn't work.
So I thought it's because I had installed SmallMenu on the storage memory instead of main memory. I removed and re-installed SmallMen on Main memory, and it still has the same problem.
After yet another reinstall now it's even worse. If I start small menu it wouldn't work at all. Not only it won't pull down a menu by tapping on the start menu icon, it starts to screw up other programs as well. If other programs has some kind of pull-down selector it'll keep closing it after I've clicked the down-arrow. Also, if I type something in a field, the cursor will keep disappering as if I've clicked elsewhere on the screen or something.
I've all but given up on SmallMenu ... after unloading and removing smallMenu everything else works fine. I wonder if I go into the registry and clean up all the smallmenu related entries would work ... but then I worry if I would screw it up even more
Anybody has any suggestion or anybody experienced the same thing?

Ok,
I am not sure if any of you have switched your devices from Portrait to Landscape recently, but give it a try and you will see how the Recent Programs are displayed in Portrait we all know they go under the user defined icons in the start menu, but in Landscape they are all listed at the top alot neater than making your start menu list go across the screen. I searched the registry yesterday trying to see if any values changed with no luck. So can one of you guys like Buzz or Mamiach or someone take a look into it???

I'm also desperately keen for a hack to fix this - it's very messy having the long list, and quite disorientating.
I put the whole registry into word and spent a fair bit of time seqarching for something that could have looked like a meaningful key - nada. It's probably hard coded
craigiecraigie4 - this is likely to be coded into the menu routine - when the list would create a menu > screen height, it reverts to the cuter menu.
I can't think of any way to hack into this without hacking the underlying routines. I doubt this is in the registry, but calculated dynamically.
Why not use smallmenu? it's better...
V
the ipaq 4155 I had used to do this stright out of the box, even without switching to Landscape.. that was windows Mobile 2003 (not SE).
It seems 2003 kept the most recently opened progs on the top hirizontally. 2003SE does this in the center of the start menu instead.

Correction - it's MUCH better...
I am using WA with WAD, but I really like to limit my programs to necessity rather than GUI. I don't want to install to many programs on my PDA2K I like to keep it clean
alfredtv - if you're using wisbar, why do you need the startmenu at all?
SmallMenu is a fair alternative to wisbar if you only need what it offers.
I think the startmenu is near useless, and loathe it being there even when I don't need it. That's what prompted me to make my ToggleToday hacks
With SmallMenu correctly configured you shouldn't need the startmenu at all.
(note settings submenu, favorites submenu, special tools, custom icons on subfolders etc)
I took it to an extreme and made a toggle-able StartMenu, ToggleToday and new bar all in one:
However I've had a thought about a possible way to achieve the "mini-start menu". I might play around with an idea. No promises though, lots of other things to do.
V
I have read about your hacks on the other forums, and was thinking about trying them out.
Do they work with WM5 now??
I am using WA because their is no way to change the recent programs to a different location/remove them all together. I would not use them if there was a way to do this.
As I said before I prefer to not use additional programs, but at this point have no chioce. In WM5 M$ should really have thought about adding cascading menus to the Start button, that would have been great.
alfredtv - I haven't checked my hacks properly on WM5. The hiding the start bar bit does work for ToggleToday on WM5. It won't however hide the tray from the Today screen yet, because I don't have a WM5 device to test on.
If you're only using Wisbar as a startmenu replacement, give smallmenu a go. There is a free version. I've never had any problems with it.
V
This program is used to shrink the icons in the Programs explorer in Pocket PCs.
It's WM5 and WM2003 compatible.
Note: it only works once, until you change folder. So assign it to a hardware key.
Note: you must launch "programs" once before use; it will complain if you don't.

Works great on my Qtek9100
I'm using VJSmallIcons.exe 2
Post a screenshot!
V
Of course here it is :
Great work,
i have created a shortcut in the programs folder, because i dont want it to map to a hardware-button. i renamed the link to 1vjsmallicons.lnk to get in just pretty first in the list of programs.
If i enter the programs folder i press on the shortcut and the menu is small.
But two issues:
1. if i small the icons and wlak through the list of programs i get in the second column of the list. The first column disappears and there is no way to get back. I use a qtek 9100
2. If i call the programs folder again all the icons are just small. So as if it remembers to the first call (bug or feature). Furthermore i get to the column where i have left the program menu folder.
Topcaser, what command line are you using?
VJSmallIcons only changes the current explorer screen. It doesn't try to change any others, so when you go into a subfolder it will go back to normal. The small icons can be made more permanent, but it would require more programming that I haven't had time to do yet...
V
I am using no option, just calling the program via a link.
btw, how can i specify an option?? And what is the sense of this option 0-4
Is it the number of cols?
And what about the second issue: i can never scroll back to the first column, once it was gone. (also with the control panel not)
topcaser: the command line 0 to 4 will change the view style, in exactly the same way as you have on your PC: large icons, small icons, details, listview etc. Just try them out!
Not sure about the contrl panel issue? Could you try to send a screenshot? Use MagicSS if you don't already have a screenshot program.
V
Hi,
i have posted two pics: the first shows a blue mark over snap tool. At the second one i pressed the left button to get to the most left column again. But the screen does not follow this markation.
A second question: how am i able to specify the comand line option?
topcaser:
I don't have my phone with me today, I'll have a play with it a bit later. Are the pictures the wrong way round as you describe them? I can only see the blue selection mark in the second picture.
For the command line, read here

Yes you are right. My mistake. Sorry
Topcaser, using the settings shown in the screenshot, have you tried going up to the top, instead of left? It depends which command line option you're using, but try it just in case.
V
This dont works also.
Hi VJ,
i have played around with your tool. Command line option 2 and 1 works perfect. But the best way to use it is with command line option 3. Forget Small Menu - one can use only your little app (maybe together with Mortbutton and Mortscript) - it can do the same as SmallMenu. Together with MagicButton one misses no feature at all.
Unfortunately the command line option 3 has the bug which i described above. Have you fixed this already?
Topcaser, unfortunately if there's a bug in the view, I can't really fix it. I don't do anything other than change the view style of the "listview" control that the programs menu is based on. So it's very simple. But the programs menu is not designed to have its view changed, so if it's buggy, I can't help it very much. I'll try to have another look though, someone on brighthand was complaining about making the programs menu small, and I think it might be possible to make this program resident so that it kind of retains the settings.
But this is a small program, and others have to be fixed first I'm afraid. I will try to have another look.

Like the title says - is there any way or some small utility to apply background image for top and/or bottom bars? (I know You can't make them simply transparent).
I have tried Wisbar, rlToday etc, they are all either doing too much on the side, consuming way too much memory or just buggy. I've also searched this forum but as the bars have too many names (top bar, taskbar, menu bar, start bar etc.) I've come up with nothing really...
What I would like to achieve is something like this (image from ultimatelaunch.de):
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",

}
Please help.
i asked that before
it is another tool by the ultimate launch author called skinmobile:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=1916467&postcount=28
OK, thanks!!!
I'll look into it later (or tomorrow) as I don't have my device with me atm. But it sure seems what I am looking for considering what I have seen and that it's small
you can also use vijay555's todayToggle to remove either or both of them, and just show the background image.
who really needs the bottom bar anyway, if someone can't remember what the two (big number) launches are, what are they doing playing around with ppcs?
it's a tiny exe (9.5kb) that you can leave in your windows\startup folder.
Then edit the registry to choose the size, the exe basically shrinks the bars to 2pixels but you can choose any size you want
Okay, thanks for the tip!!!
By the way - I've seen screenshots of taskbars with icons representing running applications just like in normal desktop PC. Besides MagicButton and WKTask and maybe Wisbar (not sure), are there any other apps (small) or registry hacks that do this? It seems that all these applications address a multiple changes in the system, I am trying to locate utilities that do just that one little thing - show running application icons on taskbar (next to start button).
i use wktask and set it to do absolutely nothing except show the running tasks.
it does'nt seem to me that it slows down or causes any problems
OK, thanks for the tip! Gone try it that way.
By the way Skinmobile is buggy on my WM6, so that app kind of sucks...
yes its a bit buggy but you can edit the ini file and graphics and try a bit around. i had it running without any problems on wm6.1
Naah, I'll just leave it to that and wait for better apps. The "see-thru" effect isn't worth it, if its buggy. For me at least. The buggyness seems to appear when I click on any of the taskbar icons. Although I didn't do a soft reset after running the prog. Should have I done it? Would it change anything?

I've done hard reset, clear storage, SD memory card format and still all in vain
Do you know how to fix this small problem?
Not quite sure how you got the games icon on the program tabs - it was not an option for me. I can only add the individual games of the sub-set.

It was orignally setted up in this ROM (maybe because my operator customisation program). But even after hard reset this customisation program is installed and it is working fine.
It turns out you cannot assign folders to the Program buttons (OK let me correct that you can but you can't use them...) If you click on your Games folder that you placed in your programs list you will see it appear in your START MENU recent applications list. Clicking on it here has the same nothing happens result. I setup most of my applications in handy folders (games, utilities, office, development etc) becaused it makes the start menu nice and then tried exactly what you did and also placed them in my program buttons expecting File Explorer would be launched with the folder in question... alas this did not occur. If I ever get the time to figure out how to replace the HTC Programs screen with my own custom one I will write a fix for this but not today.

Hi guys!
I've got the exact same problem. And this icon cannot be removed. After tapping "Remove", there is a little padlock on it istead of an "x" and nothing can be done with it.
Can anyone please help?
Get the Diamond TF3D application from the diamond forum. It will apparently allow you to unlock operator customized shortcuts from the program launcher so you an remove them. I can't test this myself as I don't have any locked programs on my sim free HD. Another option is to flash to an uncustomized ROM and the dodgy shortcut won't be there in the first place.
Thank you very much. I'll try the second option, although I'd prefer something less invasive.
Well, it turns out that everything we need to know to solve this problem is already here:

Hello everybody
Yesterday I tried to upgrade my HTC TD2 form WM 6.1 to 6.5
After reading the instructions from the official site, I've succesfully (as I thought) installed the 6.5 version on my htc
Unfortunately, after this, I realised that the Quick Menu icon and the Task Manager tab from the Settings menu have been vanished
I tried everything to bring them back (including many hard resets) but nothing worked - the quick menu icon is still missing
I dunno what else to do, should I downgrade my phone back to 6.1 or there's a solution to make this quick menu/task man. work again...
Do you mean the program Quick Menu? or are you referring to the task manager?
I mean this icon on the upper right of the screen
http img13.imageshack.us/img13/5287/iconhf.png
It's completely gone and I can't find any way to make it appear again..
WM6.5 has replaced the task manager with the drop down menu.
You can install another task manager but it will be difficult to access as you have to hit just the very edge of the taskbar and the "X" will not display.
An alternative would be to run the program QuickMenu which provides an alternate start menu and has built in task manager, but it resides on the left instead of the right.
Excuse me for not being so clear.. It's quite late in the evening here in Greece
youtube.com/watch?v=BlRpUaHzvK4&feature=related
In this vid you see that the Quick Menu (this is how it is referred in the manuals) is located on the upper right of the screen (most times next to the battery meter) , and when you click on that it'll open a drop down menu with the Programs name and and X next to it (so that you can close any program quickly)
After I upgraded my phone, this is completely gone, and next to the battery meter there's nothing (just a small empty space), and I can't find any way to make it appear again. Even after 5 hard resets, this problem still persists
Should I downgrade to get it back or there's a way to fix it?..
No, you were clear and I understand what your issue is.
I have enclosed a taskmanager that will work, but as I previously stated, it probably will not display as it used to and will be hard to access.
I have since switched to using a program called QuickMenu that will display all of your running programs and can be closed from the menu, same way as it does in a taskmanager. Its just sits on the left of the taskbar and not the right.
Sorry if my explanation wasn't clear.
I see..
It was a good feature, I can't really understand why it was removed.. Anyway
Where I can get this QuickMenu program you use?
Thanks for your answers, you've been very helpful
