How can i use a hardware key for Task Manager - 8525, TyTN, MDA Vario II, JasJam General

I really would like to assign my "comm manager" button to the task manager for closing programs. How can i do this?
Thanks for any help you can give me

Start -> Settings -> Buttons ?

I tried that. unfortunately neither memory nor task manager is an option for buttons. its too bad because i really dont need a button for the comm manager

Go here:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/en-us/dnppcgen/html/ppc_tcuts2.asp?frame=true
read about making a shortcut to Memory/Running programs.
Make a .lnk file as directed, place in your start menu, and then you will have that option available in Start -> Settings -> Buttons
V

Using that information you can make a shortcut with this;
28#ctlpnl cplmain.cpl,4,2&ltCR>
Copy the above text into notepad and "save as", Running Progs.lnk
Copy the file to the PPC into the Windows\Start Menu folder and then link it to a hard key.
I used AE Button Plus to map task manager to the windows key which also works well.

thanks alot. I'm glad there was a solution that didn't include more software. I really loaded my 8125 up with tweaks and it made it really slow and unstable. I'm really happy wiht the 8525 as it seems to have native support for alot of the tweaks people have been doing on the 8525 and i would hate to slow it down with lots of programs.

How to map the Startmenu>Programs to the left softkey

Is it possible to map the Startmenu programs window to the left softkey?

To put it anotherway, can somebody tell me what shortcut can opens the programs window or the settings window?

I knew that. I was talking about one-button-press access to the Programs window, and not to the Startmenu.
So I'd like to open the programs window by pushing the left soft key.
Then use WM5NewMenu to create a new menu containing all your programs .. then use the left softkey to launch that new menu ..

Thanks, but it'd be too much. I use almost all of the programs. I've sorted them into sub folters, it looks like almost a "normal" phone menu system.
And that's why I'd like to access them by one key...
Anybody? else?

Use Resco Explorer and browse to windows-start menu and highlight the programs folder, tap menu and choose 'create shortcut in start menu' then after closing down Resco go to settings and choose 'soft key' in there, choose program. works for me! Also if when using Resco you goto menu and choose large icons in the 'view' sub menu, the layout will look very similar to the view when opening up programs the original way. Hope this helps!

Thanks! You are beating about the bush!
It's almost that I wanted, but it runs the Resco Explorer, and the Resco is showing the programs folder.
The result is not bad, but starting the Resco takes more time, and more memory than the "normal" programs window
Somewhere I saw some *.cpl file (or what), in a shortcut that opened the settings window. I thought there is a similar solution to the programs folder too. So i'd like to know what should contains my .lnk file, that runs the normal programs window.
Any solution for this???
Thanks

Comm Manage on wing

Is there a way to set my (hold) mail button or (hold) voice button to a comm manager button? I tried to set it as a tab in HTC Home but, when I go to add it it doesn't show up under programs? As anyone figured this out. I really like to just use a button to turn on my wifi instead of navigate around in start menu.
Thanks for your time.
my Button 5 is set to Comm manager and it works perfectly, i have it on my list, check again
Yeah, I've looked through and through the list for setting the buttons and I can't find comm mananger? I wonder if there is some way of adding it to the list?
Normally if u add a shortcut to Windows/Start Menu/Programs u should be able to select it
thanks. that sounds like it might work.
How to I add a shortcut to programs though?
if u have a program like Total Commander you can go to \Windows\CommManager.exe
then go to File >>>>>> (A) > Create Shortcut and put the shortcut in \Windows\Start Menu\Programs
Hope that helps, GL

Awesome. Yeah. I used Total Commander. I went and found the .lnk file for comm manager and copied it into the windows folder that had all the other programs in it. Then it worked. I should of thought of this. For some reason I spaced it. Thanks for your help.

You may want to take a look at this tool, one of the most valuable tools I've installed on my Polaris: 'QuickMenu' of Chinese origin. It replaces the startmenu on the windows logo, while the original windows startmenu is still available under 'Start'.
http://www.freewarepocketpc.net/ppc-download-quickmenu-v2-7.html
Functions:
- Cascading StartMenu (fully configurable)
- Cascading Settings menu (windows mobile settings)
- TaskManager (easy switch and close functions from the startmenu)
- TaskSwitcher (create alt-tab shortcut to QM-active-next which you can map to a hardbutton)
- Hibernate/Suspend/Reboot from startmenu
- Execute ...
- SIP panel selector
- Bluetooth toggle (connectable, discoverable, off)
- Batterystatus (in percentage)
- Memorystatus (internal or memorycard)
There's no installer, unzip the archive to a 'quickmenu' folder in your program files and run the exe once. If you don't like it, delete the folder. The only issue I had with it on my previous device was that the 'Settings' menu which links to WM's personal, system and connection settings didn't work correctly, possibly because it was mapped to the 'Settings' function, in stead of the dutch 'Instellingen'. The rest of the functions worked fine.
My Polaris has an english system and QM works perfectly. Great little tool.
"You may want to take a look at this tool, one of the most valuable tools I've installed on my Polaris:"
Thanks for this. A top tool.
Indeed a great tool, but can you disable the battery status on the upper right corner ? It is messing with the task manager and i cant close or select which program i want.
I tried disabling it from the settings of the program itself, and the battery status gets removed, but i still cant see the task manager icon.
Go into Settings/Task Manager/Button tag and re-check the "Enable Quick Menu on Today Screen"

Mapping Start button directly to programs folder

Searched around for quite a while and couldn't find a solution to this, maybe someone with with more knowledge on resource hacking can help out.
Using the start menu on WM Professional devices is not conducive to single handed use, its actually quite cumbersome. I would like to remap the *on-screen* start button to simply open the programs folder ala WM Smartphone. Is this possible? I believe it would be much easier to manage on the go and would skip a step which is always beneficial. The only problem I could see is creating a link to "settings"
Any help on this would be much appreciated.
Search for the application folderStartPgm.exe
And after from Settings -> Personal -> Buttons, assing the button to this application(firs must to make a shortcut points to \startmenu\programs folder
I've seen that before, and although very cool I would still like to remap the Start button and avoid an unnecessary step. Any other ideas?

I don't know about mapping the Start button to bring up the applications folder, but using WA3 (or probably a registry tweak but I don't know it) you can remap the Start button to Windows\Start Menu\Programs, and have all of your applications displayed in the first drop-down menu rather than just 7. It also leaves access to Settings too...
Copy the attached file programs.lnk , to your \windows\start menu\programs , and use the buttons settings to bind the link to the program.lnk
---
To create a shortcut to a folder:
Use Total commander, browse to the location of which you want to make a shortcut, highlight the folder/file you want, from the File menu in Total Commander, choose >>>> on top , and then choose create short-cut, then save the output link to the \windows\start menu\programs.
---------------
Hope this helps

Sounds like a great alternative to the classic (limited) start menu, but I want it gone completely. It's too cumbersome for use in the car.
Anyone?

This is a great idea and rereading my post I can see how it may be slightly confusing, you see I want to change the Start menu button in the top left corner of the screen that opens the menu to directly open the programs folder. If anyone of you has used a windows mobile smartphone you know what I mean. That way all you have to do is tap the top left section of the screen and scroll to your app. no more tiny menu to hunt and peck on while trying to do important things like you know driving, or bike riding, etc...
Thanks for all the suggestions so far guys.

yeah someone upload it here
Me to has been looking for this. To make pressing the on screen windows icon pop up the programs folder, but one other problem, how to then access settings folder.
folderStartPgm.exe
Click to collapse
for me the filename to start programsfolder is folderview.exe
just need a way to link it to the icon.
Good luck anyway
Try this program.
In search for a solution, you can maybe use "LargeStartmenu.cab". It makes the starmenu (and text in programs) larger. The version in the "Diamond Apps (OEM + CAB)" thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=395400
works for my Touch
You can find folderStartPgm.exe here:

Task manager idea

I was wondering if it would be possible to have nice fast simple on-screen task manager that is called from long press of home button, for example. Anyone got ideas?
It's not exactly the same question, but is it possible to map a softkey to the standard task manager? (I just bought a piel frama case and it's hard to tap on the task manager symbol)
Or add a shortcut to the task manager in the start menu .. any ideas how to do this?
try here:
http://www.dotfred.net/
he has (in my opinion) the best taskmanager with all the trimmings, but if you want a basic one that just displays running programs as a picture, like Alt+Tab on a PC, download the task switcher from the above site
once it is installed, got to START->SETTINGS->BUTTONS
you will see only one button available, this is called "Button 1" (the call key bot the hang up key) map task switcher to this
then when you hold down the call key you will have a visual taskmanager where you can end running progs etc
hope this helps
Thanks for the reply, I have that task manager already installed in Dutty's ROM, and I think it's great but I can't find a simple option like "close all active tasks" and "define exceptions"
For the second idea, I have tested it but I don't like to hold any key, I feel like doing harm to my phone
thanks for the responses guys...
