Today Screen and the Scroller - 8525, TyTN, MDA Vario II, JasJam General

Hey guys,
New to the forum but I've had a search for an answer (not that much of a newbie ) so I thought I'd ask straight out!
I have the Orange version of the Hermes, and noticed that the built in Today menu Orange provides works very nicely with the Scroller (left hand side) to allow you to choose items on the menu.
My problem is that I'm using phoneAlarm and cLauncher. Neither of these react to the scroller. Anyone know of a way to convert the scroller movements into simple up and down commands, as the D-Pad/hard buttons at the bottom allow you to highlight and select items in pA&cL?
If this makes no sense I'll reword it
Thanks in Advance!
[EDIT]
Just for searching purpose, Scroll Wheel might be a better term. There's also Jog Wheel which isn't the same, but similar!

The Scroller behaves just as if you where pressing the Dpad up or down. It does not provide lateral movement (like the SonyEricsson PXXX sieries).
Thus with PhoneAlarm and cLauncher you can just scroll to it (depending on the skin, you should be able to tell when you are on the desired today row or plugin) and then must use the DPad to navigate left or right through the different icons.

I thought that was the case, but when I use phoneAlarm and the D-Pad, I get yellow squares highlighting the buttons, but if I use the Scroller it doesn't do anything. This leads me to believe it's not totally the same

Any way to quickly change orientation of screen?

I had a Universal until recently (too bulky, buggy, and Wizard is so much nicer!) so I now have the Wizard/O2 Xda Mini S.
On the Uni there was an icon on the Today page for changing orientation of the screen with 1-click. On the Wizard there is none, and I have to navigate through several menus in Settings to change it.
Any way to add the Universal's Today icon to the Wizard?
Or failing that, how can I add Start Menu shortcut to the 'Screen' option in Settings?
Check out phm tools keys. They have a screen rotation shortcut.
I think there are registry hacks to show the screen rotation UI icon though (WM2003 at least)

Thanks, would really like that reg hack if anyone can find it?
EDIT: I found this for the Universal but it has no effect on my Wizard:
To change the display of the screen rotation icon in the system tray
The setting is at 'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\GDI\ROTATION'
The 'HideOrientationUI' DWORD value can be set to '1' to hide the icon or '0' to show the icon
For example, to hide the screen rotation icon
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\GDI\ROTATION\HideOrientationUI = 1

CRAP! I opened this thread for the sole purpose of making that exact smart-ass response. You suck.
:? Just to clarify for those of you who don't credit me with a milligram of intellect, I wish to orientate the screen when not using the keyboard. This is a feature of WM5 and the Universal allows you to do it from the home screen, but not the Wizard.
I have however solved it by using Spb PocketPlus

Anyway to do it without installing pocket plus ?
Why not hook it up to one of the hardware buttons ? If you're worried about running out of buttons, you can probably install one of the button managers?
I've got '<Rotate Screen>' (built-in option in Buttons) under the 'voice call' button, and Magic ScreenShot under the same button+hold (normally 'voice memo'); I highly doubt I'll use either of those voice functions, so they fit nicely there
I just added it to mort button, but its still a key press and then a tap of the screen, would much prefer a today icon just to be tapped.
Well, maybe time for a developer to step in and make a tiny application that rotates the screen
http://www.devx.com/wireless/Article/21590/1954?pf=true
and
http://www.pocketpcdn.com/articles/rotatese.html
have code examples, but no compiles (boo, hiss - why is that?)
ZeBoxx: I've done it, but PHM tools already contains very effective screen rotation icons. Find PHM Keys... assign to hardware key or shortcut or whatever. Use his or my VJTrayLaunch and stick it in the tray as well if you want... oh, mort script does this as well I think.
V
Well, there we go
And for more light-weight (are they, really? I have no idea);
270-degrees (for Wizard):
http://www.pocketgear.com/software_detail.asp?id=15527
90-degrees (exact opposite side :x):
http://www.pocketgear.com/software_detail.asp?id=15011
180-degrees:
http://www.pocketgear.com/software_detail.asp?id=15332
PHM Keys seems to have some other neat things that I might download it for, but personally I'm happy with just having <Rotate Screen> under the 1 button (no special button managers)
off-topic: is the PHM website ever going to be back?
I have pocket plus 3 installed, so i just added 'Rotate screen left' onto the close button context menu.
Now its just a click-hold and click away - even from within a program (comes in handy when using internet explorer).

Which function you use the most in smartskey

Hi, would like to know what do you think about smartskey.
The softkey remap adding both Start Menu and Close functionality is really what brings real convienience to using my K-JAM.
The other features are nice, but I rarely use them.
When using OmapClock, I prefer to add my own startup and notifcation events.
Edit: the "alternate" startmenu key function is brilliant! I now use GSPocketMagic and it works great!
First of all, thank you very much for this great piece of work.
Softkey remap is used most often. Volume key remap is the next most used.
This is a wonderful bit of work. I use the dpad mapping about 98% of the time I use the phone. I also use the close with right soft key mapping fairly frequently and the volume key mapping to disable the today screen volme control (safety first!) and for scrolling within apps. Postal and Paypal gratitude forthcoming.
New function to close screen and block buttons
Hi,
I think it will be very very usefull to have a button which blocks all the buttons and toggle off the screen. It would make the program almost perfect!

there sholud be checkboxes instead of radioboxes in this poll. i'd check all options besides volume key remapping, because i prefer it to stay with its original function. if i could suggest anything new, it would be some piece of GUI placed in Settings window for configuring smartskey. editing smartskey.ini every time after installing new version is not quite convenient way, mostly when it's unicoded in some strange way and not every text editor can handle it (gedit in GNOME - for example - can't).

Items on the Today Screen size

Can I make the size of the items on the today screen (i.e. messages, device lock) any bigger? I use my Wizzard as my phone and don't use the stylus for texts and calls, and I've got big fat thumbs
Any help would be much appreciated!
you can't change the defaults one. you may try your luck on using larger fonts, but most Today stuff don't respond to fonts settings.
Anyway, for thumb usage, you can try using cLaunch (available in this forum, with tutorials) to launch applications. The max size is around 32x32, good enough for most people. However, it is an app launcher, hence you may still need those plugins for display purposes. It doesn't come with a lock function, but there are fellow members whom had it launch some of the lockers developed here.
thanks for that. I get the general idea of what you suggest, but I'm new to PPCs. I'll get reading!!
You can also try mapping your most used applications to your hardkeys by going to settings --> personal --> buttons.
Text messaging already has it own, and you can search the wizard forum for an applicatin called DeviceLock which allows you to assign locking your device to a hardware button.
For the dialer, you may want to look at ETen Dialer's Smart Dial --> it makes the buttons on the phone app a lot bigger so thumbs can be used. You can do a google search and it should come up quite easily.
Hope that helps!
or you can try to find a different theme that has larger text and icons.
I too, have big thumbs and find it frustrating to try to tap tiny icons.
My solution is to use plugins that can be scrolled and selected using the Dpad this also keeps the screen free of fingerprints.
My current favourites for one thumb operation are
Smartskey for press&hold softkeys for startmenu and close programs.
TodayAgenda v0.9.50 for tasks, appointments and clock/alarm settings.
PHM Traylaunch and Batterystatus for specific shortcuts in the tray.

Development Request: turn HTC [X]button into [OK]button

i am using htc x-button on my treo and like the ability to actually close the application instead of hiding it.
however for onehand navigation it might be very usefull to add an option to close applications with the (hardware) [OK]button.
i am not a programmer but having a look at the size of the original program it might be a very small change to allow that. what do you think?
is it worth the try? would you say this might be a usefull additon?
thanks a lot for your time
ditch x-button & use PQzII instead.
or tman for that matter
@ deadeyes:
nice program but unfortunately doesnt work on treo with WM6. (display problems and OK-funktion not working)
@pat123:
thats "just another taskmanager", but doesnt fits my needs. it requires the use of the stylus to select and close programs.
i just want to use the treo onehanded as much often as possible, no stylus. so using the ok-button to actually close programs would be perfect. PQzII would be perfect (even overloaded for me) if it works with WM6.
any more hints on this one?
I am also trying to make my device (8525) as thumb friendly as possible. I use SPB Mobile shell, which has an easy-to-poke-at-with-your-thumb task manager. The task manager can be used to switch to or close any running application. It can also close all, close all but selected, or minimize all. I mapped the task manager to the PTT button (using Sleuth's PTT fix) for easy access. I also mapped the Today screen to the hardware Internet Explorer button to use as a "minimize all" button. (SBP Mobile Shell also has makes it possible to add large icons to the today screen to launch your favorite programs). I now have a fairly easy time switching between apps while walking or whatever without using two hands. I still wish I could map the "OK" button to close rather than minimize though. Maybe someone with far more skill than I will come up with a way to map the "OK" button to close an appication. I'm more "user" than "developer".
...Or Pbar for that matter.

hmm, I'm using it on WM6 (hermes however), and it working perfectly.
by display problem, do you mean the white square on your top bar? if yes, you can disable it in the icon tab.
did you check the "Use OK button" in the Window tab? if yes and it still doesn't work then you will probably need to map close function manually in the system tab. (you will need to find out the key code in concern, they have other apps to help you do that)
I found something new (to me) since my last post. I just found vijay555's OK/close button application. It can be mapped to a hardware button (not the OK button unfortunately), but it works great. It's much easier to use a hardware button than it is to try to wedge my fat thumb into the upper right corner of the screen. Here's the link --

DredSensor v1.0:
=======================================================================================
=======================================================================
Reviewed on gadgetmix.com: See the article
=======================================================================
If you have tried to play a game needing left and right key on an HTC Touch Diamond, you noticed that they are 2mm wide and if you click next to it, you get back to home page or to dialing menu etc...
So I've written a prog allowing you to lock these 4 keys actions and replace it by classical key event (VK_LEFT, VK_RIGHT, ...).
In that way you can play tetris, and use "Pick-Up" and "Hang-Up" keys for going left and right.
Link ->: DredSensor
To use it, you need:
1) An HTC Touch Diamond (it's the only one i have so i can't test it on other models)
2) Install the .cab
3) Reboot your HTC
4) Run a game (or app or ...)
5) Get your stylus out and back-in, in less than 1 second
6) Click "Yes"
----- A config window opens:
7) Check that Type = "HardKeySimul"
8) Click "Ok"
Now you can use (and eventually assign) your 'Home', 'Back', 'Pick-Up' and 'Hang-Up' keys in that game/app.
Actually, the 'Pick-Up' and 'Hang-Up' keys are always defined as Left and Right events.
Have fun.
Ps:
For people interested, the other "Type" in the config window are:
- "Launcher": allow you to quicklaunch 4 app (that you define in the config wnd) when you double tap (not click, just tap) on one of those 4 keyz
- "Scroll": allow you to scroll the current window by tapping those 4 keyz panel
- "KeySimul": allow you to send left/right/up/down events by tapping those 4 keyz panel
Thx, now I can use opera mini and pie (good for mlb's wap) in full screen
Thank you very much. Great program. Now, with left and right softkey hardware buttons, I can play with my java games.

Do any of them even work on the vga screen?
first of all: great app!
only thing i don't like is that now every time i pull out the stylus the phone vibrates. maybe you could make the "window-catching-thing" optional, so you have to enable it first?!? with that, the app would be perfect to me!
figured out an other problem: the "scroll-wheel-function" in opera and tomtom doesn't work anymore...

Hello.
As it's a background program, making vivrate the phone is the best way i found to easlily know if it's loaded or not.
If you don't like that, you can disable it by manually editing the 'Config.ini' file in '/Program Files/DredSensor':
Go under the section you want to disable vibrator in (ex: "[Default]")
Add: "NoVibrate=1"
For the scroll problem, i didn't change scrolling system from v1.0 so are you sure it was working in v1.0 and it's no more working in v1.1?
@Dredger97
Thank´s for this wonderful tool!

is there a wa to map home/back to A/B controller buttons? Trying to get it to work with PocketNester Thanks
Thanks
I will tried
Seems to be good. Shall download and try...
Doesn't work for all hard keys
I have the original diamond and it doesn't look like any of the key presses work.
I could really do with replacing volume and Home/Back Buttons. Do these buttons
support Long press too?

If you go in PocketNester -> Option -> Controller, you can see that it's default mapped to 0xC4 and 0xC3 key codes.
So all you have to set in DredSensor is:
- Home: "Key:0xC4"
- Back: "Key:0xC3"
I tried that on super mario, it works, but the problem is that you can't press those keys and simultaneously press Left and Right so it's quite hard to play...
In fact you can map Volume Up and Down keyz to button A and B and it's much easier to play.

The actual version of DredSensor doesn't change anything to volume up/down buttons.
All it catches is Home,Back,Talk and End hard keys.
About long press,
- In "Launcher" mode, you can define action for "Long click"
- In "HardKeySimul" mode, if you make a long press to "Home", and mapped "Left" key to "Home" button, it will occure a long press on "Left" key.
I just don't seem to be able to get this to work - I follow the first post to remap the home and back keys to the softkeys, but home always takes me back to touchflo.
Are there any other things I can try, or is it just the ROM i'm using doing this?

I don't think it's a ROM problem.
The 2 most common reasons for not working are:
It doesn't work if you have G-Scroll or something similar installed.
When you edit config for an App, this config only applies when "Window Title" and "ClassName" of the foreground window matches what is defined in that Config.
If it doesn't match any config, DredSensor doesn't catch your hard keys.
You can use wildcards in your Config so, for example, if the app you want to configure always changes its title, you can set "*" for window title.
everything gose well in my diamond! Thx!
just a little suggestion : as volume up/down could be very useful in some app (like a game emulator), could you make them configurable in your next version?
nice job!

I make a softreset and works whit no problem, when i click home button open the program i assign.
Doesn't seem to work in Phone screen. I am not sure if it is because it is a dialog class. If this could be made to work, it would be great as when a person has multiple phone numbers you could scroll by pressing right or left key.
Thanks in advance
just tested it with tetris and it worked great. good stuff

I've nothing like that installed - I've tried wildcards, and soft resetting between altering them, even setting the default so that it should catch any class or window so that the home and back keys are soft keys one and two.
It's semi trapping the window and keys.......I just wonder if your app is not being fed the correct window name/class, or there's some extra characters or something that is fooling it.
Here's an example - setting home and back keys to the softkeys, with a config of * for window, and * for class.
On the touchflo screen, pressing home will take it to the phone screen (correct left softkey action), but once in the phone screen, pressing home takes it to the touchflo screen when it should go to contacts.
If I'm in any other application, it never traps the home key, and will always go back to touchflo. Disabling touchflo doesn't change this, it takes it back to the today screen.
I'm using shak's rom if anyone else can confirm they can get it to work using that one
